Canon's Full Frame Mirorrless Cameras [CR2]

HTML:
Canon will release two full frame mirrorless cameras before the middle of 2019, the first one to come will be the “flagship” model for this new line of cameras. <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/the-full-list-of-unreleased-canon-camera-ids/">As reported earlier</a>, this camera will sport a 30.4mp sensor that could be closely related to the EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<p>The second full frame mirrorless body will be a lower megapixel count. We’ve seen mentions of various pixel counts, which isn’t unusual, as test cameras can come with a wide array of different image sensors. The most likely pixel count will be around 24mp, we do not believe they’ll be using the EOS 6D Mark II’s 26.2mp sensor, or even a modified version of it.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>Both cameras will shoot 4K, with the “flagship” model providing the best video features.</p>
<p>We’re also told that there’s a possibility of a removable EVF on one of the cameras, which we think would be reserved for the lower end full frame mirrorless camera.</p>
<p>We’re told that there are currently no plans to release a camera that will compete directly with Sony’s high ISO capable Alpha a7s II.</p>
<p><strong>What about the mount?</strong></p>
<p>We cannot get a straight answer about this. We’ve been told everything from a new mount to EF mount. One trusted source told us that the full frame mirrorless camera and EF mount problem has a “sexy” solution. We’re not sure what that means, but it’s the best news we’ve received on the topic.</p>
<p><strong>When are they coming?</strong></p>
<p>Both camera bodies will be shipping by mid 2019, but the exact announcement date for the first camera is unknown at this time.</p>
<p><strong>What will they be called?</strong></p>
<p>For the moment we only have codenames, but “EOS M1” has yet to be used by Canon. Other than that, no naming suggestions have been sent our way.</p>

Tethering speeds

I am using a cable to tether my 5DM3 into Lightroom on my Macbook Pro. I am shooting .CR2. The speed is OK, though I would like it to be faster.

1. Is there anyway to increase the speed of the photos being tethered/imported into Lightroom?
2. If I want to tether wirelessly using a CamRanger are the speeds much slower than what I am experiencing with a cable?

Thanks in advance.

Happy July 4 (USA)

To our USA Members:
I hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th. As you celebrate independence day, be careful with fireworks, and post your fireworks photos for us to admire. Many, if not most places in the US do not allow fireworks, but there seems to be no shortage of them. We have Indian reservations dotted all around us where they are legal.

Industry News: The First Rumored Specifications of Nikon's Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras

HTML:
<a href="https://nikonrumors.com/">Nikon Rumors</a> has posted the first rumored specifications of Nikon’s full frame mirrorless cameras.</p>
<ul>
<li>Two mirrorless cameras: one with 24-25MP and one with 45MP (48MP is also a possibility). I assume both cameras are full frame (I did not get a specific confirmation on that).</li>
<li>Similar body size to the Sony a7 camera but with better ergonomics and a better grip.</li>
<li>5-axis in-body stabilization</li>
<li>9fps</li>
<li>New mirrorless mount. We already knew that, but the number I was given this time is 55mm. The Z-mount dimensions <a href="https://nikonrumors.com/2018/01/18/a-quick-update-on-the-rumored-nikon-full-frame-mirrorless-camera-z-mount.aspx/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I reported a few months ago</a> were 49mm for the actual opening and 65.4mm for the entire mount diameter.</li>
<li>The new mirrorless mount will allow for f/0.95 lenses – <a href="https://nikonrumors.com/2018/06/02/nikon-has-a-new-noct-trademark-for-cameras-and-lenses.aspx/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">remember the NOCT trademark and f/0.9 lens patents</a>?</li>
<li>Memory cards: XQD and CF Express – now this is a surprise for me, but it is what I have heard (<a href="https://photorumors.com/2018/04/08/new-from-prograde-digital-cfexpress-1tb-and-sdxc-uhs-ii-v90-memory-cards/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ProGrade is coming with a CF Express card</a>).</li>
<li>EVF resolution: 3.6MP</li>
<li>Initially, three lenses will be announced: 24-70mm, 35mm and 50mm (I think the 35 and 50mm will be f/1.4). There is also talk about a 24mm, but it may come later.</li>
<li><strong>Pricing:</strong>
<ul>
<li>The 45MP model will be around $4,000/€4,000 in a kit with the 24-70mm lens.</li>
<li>The 25MP model will be under $3,000/€3,000 (also with a lens).</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>The official announcement is rumored for the end of July (on or around July 23rd) and shipping shortly after (August 23rd). This is the part I am not sure about because previous tips suggested a Photokina announcement. Maybe we will see the development announcement at the end of July and the official announcement before Photokina. I will try to get a confirmation on the exact announcement date.</li>

Help getting started with Studio Lights

I'm completely new to studio lighting and am using a single monolight, softbox and a reflector, along with a 5DM3, 70-200 and a Sekonic L-478D along with a synch cable for the monolight and meter.

I'd like to shoot f2.8 in order to create blur to the background, though I am confused by the process I should be going through. I have the modeling light turned on, I connect the synch cable to the meter and I take a reading. I'm able to go from 5.0 lowest power up to 10.

1. Does shutter speed even matter? I want to take photos of kids and I usually use 250 in natural lighting. What should I use with the studio lighting?

2. My meter with the studio light setting does not let me dial in F stop, just ISO and shutter. How do I figure out my desired F stop?

Thanks in advance.

Get well soon Talys!

Phil, to cheer you up after your stroke, I took some photos for you yesterday as a substitute for your going on a bird shoot. It was a gorgeous summer day in the middle of a heat wave (29 oC, 84 F, cool for the USA). The rare bittern we saw a month ago has bred two chicks, and by good luck they came out to play for us. They are large but still can't fly. So, you can take some reflected enjoyment.
Best wishes
Alan

FF Mirrorless Poll: What Mount Will We See?

What FF mirrorless mount will Canon release? (what they will *release* -- not what you want)

    Votes: 10 21.3%
  • FF mirrorless will be offered in full EF

    Votes: 13 27.7%
  • FF mirrorless will be offered in thinner-than-EF at first, but a full EF mirrorless will come later

    Votes: 2 4.3%
  • FF mirrorless will be offered in full EF at first, but thinner-than-EF mirrorless will come later

    Votes: 7 14.9%
  • Canon will launch the system with both full EF and thinner-than-EF mounts

I don't want to know what mount you want. I want to know what you think it is going to be.

  • Poll Poll
FF Mirrorless Poll: if new mount is thin, how many new lenses will we see?

Presuming the FF mirrorless mount is thinner than EF, how many new mount lenses will eventually get

  • Very, very few lenses: just the 2-4 lenses that maximize size savings (35 f/2.8, pancakes, etc.) --

    Votes: 9 15.3%
  • A small number of standard options (e.g. standard zoom, wide zoom, a few primes, perhaps a macro)

    Votes: 12 20.3%
  • A decent spread but nothing exotic or fast (similar to what we have on EOS M today)

    Votes: 7 11.9%
  • Same as Option 3 (similar to EOS M) but with a few staple pro/fast zooms and primes added

    Votes: 13 22.0%
  • The core of EF high runner lenses (or similar) will be offered in the new mount

    Votes: 5 8.5%
  • Almost all of EF will be remade in the new mount, save perhaps the ancient/exotic/nutty ones

    Votes: 13 22.0%

Just curious what everyone's thoughts are on how much new-mount glass we would see if Canon does indeed offer a thin-mount FF mirrorless setup.

I am not asking how many lenses we will see at launch. I am referring to the 'end footprint' of the new mount's lens ecosystem, i.e. many years down the road.

Adorama Becomes The Exclusive Affiliate Partner for Canon Rumors

HTML:
As of July 1, 2018, <a href="https://adorama.evyy.net/c/60085/51926/1036?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.adorama.com%2F">Adorama</a> has become the exclusive affiliate partner for Canon Rumors. The decision to partner exclusively with Adorama wasn’t an easy one, as we’ve had great relationships with other retailers. We also understand that our readers are not only loyal to Canon Rumors, but also to retailers in which they purchase their photographic gear. However, Adorama has always been great to deal with for us from the purchasing and affiliate side.</p>
<p>Canon Rumors is my day job, so having revenue streams that I can trust is very important. Affiliate income is a big part of this, especially with the growing use of ad blockers and the loss of revenue from display advertising that creates (consider making Canon Rumors a “safe” site).</p>
<p>You may have noticed that the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/buyers-guide/">buyers guide</a> only displays pricing for Adorama now. Purchasing anything via the buyers guide links from Adorama helps the site greatly, as we receive a small commission from the sale.</p>
<p>If you have never shopped with Adorama, please consider giving them a try in the future. Our exclusive relationship with Adorama will last at least 12 months.</p>
<p>Thanks,

Craig</p>

Rechargeable batteries and Speedlite problems?

Sent a 600ex-rt to Canon for repair. The zoom function had stopped working, apparently in the ultrawide light-spread position, which really caused problems with exposure.

Canon repaired it with the note: "Replaced head assembly. Replaced main circuit board."

The Speedlite had failed with Eneloops in it. They tested at still 60% power when I took them out. But I had left them in there probably a couple of months before using the Speedlite. These eneloops were purchased about a year ago, and they had no signs of leakage.

Has anybody else had issues with Eneloops or other rechargeables and their gear?

Thanks!

16-35 and 70-200 a Good Combo to Call it a Day With?

So I have a 6D, 16-35 4.0 IS and 135 2.0. Almost snagged a 50mm lens, but didn't and have a longer telephoto lens on my wish list.
I do paid headshots, family portraits, word-of-mouth whatever and lots of "running" events plus my son's Marching and Jazz Bands. Even my "lighting" skills are taking on a new higher level of excellence.
Would a numbnut like myself who's unable to make decisions possibly do quite well with just my UWA and one of the new 70-200's (maybe the 2.8, but maybe the 4.0)?
Thanks.

16-35mm f/4 test shots

I had intended to stop by Best Buy in recent weeks to see how their camera department is doing. Yesterday as I drove home from the funeral for a high school classmate who had died suddenly, I did stop. They seemed to be doing very well, with a good range of Canon lenses, as well as a lot of Sony and Nikon stuff, though I didn't really look at them.

A salesman who is very knowledgable and whom I have found to be trustworthy found me after I had been otherwise greeted. He and I caught up a bit about my experience with the 6D2 he sold me, as well as his developing photographic career. He was especially interested in my video experience.

I told him that I was considering the 16-35mm f/4, and he offered me some opinions about the f/2.8 model and the 17-40mm, the main Canon alternatives. He pretty well confirmed what I had read here and in reviews that indicated the f/4 lens would be my best choice. The extra stop of the 2.8 doesn't seem to be worth the extra money and weight for my purposes. He had used the f/4 around the store to document things for corporate, as they like having done periodically. He is considering buying the lens for himself, as he is about to get a real estate client. Since I shot some houses for a realtor a few years ago, we later discussed some of the issues involved.

But in the meantime, perhaps being more aware than usual of the brevity and uncertainties of life, I decided not to wait until October to buy the f/4 for my birthday.

After braving the Charlotte rush-hour traffic to get home, I was not inclined to go out into the 96-degree heat to try out the lens. After I got out of my good clothes, I dozed off for a bit, so it was getting dark outside by the time I got the lens out and put it on the camera. I made some test shots just sitting in my den. The light was a dim CFL in a floor lamp just behind my chair. For the following picture I zoomed out to 16mm and focused on the wing of the chair I was sitting in. The camera chose f/4 for 1/30 second at ISO 12,800. Below is the full frame reduced for posting and a 100% crop of the same shot. The forum software will likely blow them up further in your browser. I didn't do anything I can recall to it in ACR/Photoshop, and certainly didn't correct vignetting or reduce the noise from the high ISO. You can see the blue Best Buy bag on the table.

The Full List of Unreleased Canon Camera ID’s

Below is a list of all the unreleased Canon cameras and their codenames. We reported back in April that two full frame mirrorless cameras were being developed at the same time, and it looks like this list confirms that to be the case.
It looks like the K424 is being developed with a 30.4mp sensor, which is the same resolution as the EOS 5D Mark IV. We don’t know if the image sensors are identical at this time.
We also cannot confirm with absolute certainty which DSLRs the K436 and K437 are. Though there are a lot of assumptions and logical guesses as to what these cameras will turn out to be.
