SD Express SDUC memory cards

https://www.dpreview.com/news/7847794311/sd-express-sduc-memory-cards-association

As the name suggests, SD Express cards are going to be fast. The SD Express format uses third-gen PCIe and NVMe transfer protocols on top of the dual-level pin layout interface to offer a theoretical maximum transfer speed of 985MB per second—almost a gigabyte per second and roughly 1.5 times faster than the maximum promised by the UHS-III cards that are only just starting to hit the market.

hehe. If ever, by when do you recon Canon will implement it in cameras? 2040? 5D Mk. XII ? ;D

Patent: Increased Precision of Shake Correction

HTML:
From <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-increased-precision-of-shake-correction">Canon News</a>, a highly detailed patent application from Canon shows how to increase the precision of the velocity sensors inside the camera to increase the accuracy of image stabilization.</p>
<p>This patent application shows Canon is improving the shake that happens with motor and mirror movement as well as when the lens is zoomed.</p>
<p>The camera in the patent image looks like <del>EOS 77D and EOS 80D</del> the EOS Rebel 760D, as pointed out in the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=35268.msg726710#msg726710">forum by Sharlin</a>.</p>

German laws - new European "General Data Protection Regulation" (GDPR, DSGVO)

Disclaimer:
I really like the EU, although some things - like this - aren't as good as they should be.
I prefer having the EU instead of having a state like before 1951.
I will lock and/or delete this thread if it starts to become an EU bashing thread.
This is for your information and help for you photogs when you come to my country.
And I want to leave space for questions and on topic discussion, if needed.

*****************************************************************************************

Hello to all German photogs and people who take photos within Germany!
(and in similar way in the rest of the EU)

In May 25th the new German "Datenschutzgrundverordnung" (DSGVO, "Basic Data Protection Ordinance") became effective. (Oh how I love these compound words)
It is the German implementation of the latest data protection regulations in the EU and so it should be implemented by other EU countries as well, although their implementation might vary.

In its latest issue 07/2018 the Germany "fotomagazin" journal, together with a lawyer, took a closer juristic look at the DSGVO.

Their Conclusion/Interpretation:
  • every picture of a person is a “personal data acquisition“ and therefore the DSGVO is relevant
  • normally all relevant personal authorizations should be granted BEFORE a picture is taken
  • all authorizations can be revoked unilaterally at any time
  • "commercial use" seems to start with the upload to the internet, even if it is free of any charge or direct commercial use
  • previously made and still active (!!!) laws/protections (KUG = copyright act of arts) of forms of art, e.g. street photography, documentation of current affairs/events and photojournalism are in contradiction to the new DSGVO
(oh, I hate it, when lawmakers don't do their job right and open doors for floods of lawsuits)
  • the DSGVO allows exceptions of these rules for "personal and familistic use"

My less formal summary:
  • To all tourists:
Don't be afraid, come to my country, enjoy your trip and take lots of photos, as long as you keep them with you and don't want to sell a calendar or photo book.
And maybe ask somebody if you want to take a picture of her/him - as you surely did before ;)
  • To all commercial photogs:
Please get informed with all relevant laws and keep an adequate form/contract/paper (according to the DSGVO) with you to set everything right if you want to use a picture of a person commercially

It will be funny how this is to be interpreted when it comes to wedding and other event photogs.
Maybe I am as the inviting person have to make a remark in my invitation on photos at that event.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::cry:

Patent: Optical Formula for New EF 24-70mm f/2.8L

HTML:
<a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-ef-lenses-rumours-and-news/">Northlight</a> has uncovered a patent relating to a zoom lens design with two aperture stops.</p>
<p>Within the patent are two different optical formulas, one for an EF 16-35mm f/2.8 and another for an EF 24-70 f/2.8.</p>
<p><strong>According to Northlight:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The aim is to produce a zoom lens with constant minimum aperture, but having small variations in lens aberrations when focusing near/far. The second aperture stop is varied as the lens zooms.</p></blockquote>

Lorikeet Bullys

Made with my M5. Some scenes using the efs 60mm macro (which has noisy focus) and others with the efm 55-200.
Still coming to grips with focussing as in parts of this clip, the camera kept focussing on the background.
Face focussing is useless on animals.

Amazing how the large cockatoos are so frightened of the much smaller lorikeets.
The other birds are crested pigeons which make a really cute bell-like noise when they fly off.

To service or not to service..

Ok so I have an extender 1.4x iii that stopped working six months ago. It had a lot of wear and I thought that the metal connector to camera needed replaced. So off to service it went, with descriptions of the issue which was poor connection to lenses and dropping connections. Canon reported replacing the electronics.

It came back timely without the metal replaced, but acted like a 2x extender electronically on multiple lenses and bodies for instance on a 100-400mm L ii it reported an aperture of f11 at 400 and would not autofocus, should have been an f8 . On a f2.8 lens it reported and apparently set a setting to 5.6 instead of f4 at max aperture.

Real life intervened with a foot operation and when I got back to it further testing showed the Same it went back to service in California., along with a 70-200mmL ii is that had a loose barrel above the tripod ring (fixed no problems).

Well it came back with replaced metal mount, but still acting like a 2x extender electrically.

Should I try again or should I give it up, I’ve purchased an new one but was hoping to leave the older 1.4x semi permanently on a 500mmf4 L is ii usm

Shipping is about 30$us each trip out CPS covers return.

Sharpest lens at F8 - F11

Hello Everyone,

yes, this topic sounds like these topics which ask for which to choose F8 or 11 for landscape photography
Im not asking that. Im sure when I want to use from 2.8 to 16 or more.

All the lens reviews mostly compare lenses at their performace wide open.
I looked across the web and found no comparison of lenses from F8 to F11.
Im interested in these apertures because I'm thinking to use another lens for landscape fotography other than my Sigma 17-50 EX.

Im looking for the lens which is sharpest at F11. Not compared to other apertures of the one lens, but Im looking basically for a chart or a list which tells me: "These are the sharpest lenses compared F11"

Has anyone of you come across testing results looking for this area?
Sure I can check DXO or digital picture but maybe you guys can shorten this up for me ? ;)

Lots of Talk, Very Little Solid Information About Canon's Next Cameras

HTML:
Recently we’ve <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/new-canon-camera-bodies-appear-for-certification/">become aware of 6 different unreleased Canon ILC camera bodies</a> that have come up for various types of certification. The only camera out of the lot that we’re pretty sure is coming this year, is an EOS M5 Mark II ahead of Photokina in September. Beyond that, everything is currently a guess.</p>
<p>There are <a href="https://www.*********.com/first-specification-suggestions-for-upcoming-canon-cameras-eos-7d-mark-ii-eos-80d-mark-ii-eos-m5-mark-ii/">reports that two of the DSLRs mentioned will be the EOS 80D and EOS 7D Mark II</a> successors, both of which are very popular models in the lineup. Unfortunately, we have been unable to confirm that this is the case. Good sources have said repeatedly to me that there would not be a major DSLR release in 2018 and that 2019 is still an unknown.</p>
<p>Now, these certifications can happen many months in advance of an actual announcement, so it’s possible we’re looking a Q1 2019 camera bodies. Which, if true, there’s no chance of having any real specifications to report beyond guesses and logical next steps in the EOS xxD and EOS 7D line. If either of them is coming in 2018, Canon is doing a stellar job of keeping the lid on things.</p>
<p>We’ll obviously provide an update on these camera models as soon as we’re able to.</p>

Super Simple Off-Camera Set-Up?

For someone with a 6D/430EX II who wants to just do a really easy single flash off-camera flash on a single channel and doesn't even know what Slave or Group means would the following be a good place to start and maybe even stay for awhile? I already have a nice 32" Rogue silver/white reflector.
Yes? (factoring in a lot of "off-camera" fear, but having very good results with on-camera bounce) -

Horrific 80D build quality; creaky, brittle grip... normal?!

https://youtu.be/DYIspuDV3yI

Does everybody else's do this? It's gone straight back, hoping the eBay importer folk don't put up too much of a battle and just refund me in full... this isn't suitable for supporting its own weight, nevermind trusting it with a 400mm prime! It's like they forgot that the grip is more than just a lock-up for the battery :/

A New 50mm Lens is Being Tested in the Wild [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that a new 50mm lens is currently being tested by a small number of select photographers. What we weren’t told was the speed of the lens or if it was an “L” lens or not.</p>
<p>There have been various rumors over the years about a new 50mm lens, and all we’ve seen so far is the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, which is a great lens in its own regard, but hasn’t exactly created a lot of excitement with the readers on this site.</p>
<p>There was also no mention of IS being present on the testing lens in question. If it did have IS, I think it’d be safe to assume it won’t be a new 50mm L lens.</p>
<p>We’re starting to get a few more mentions about a new 50mm lens, though we still don’t think we’ll be seeing one in 2018.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

*UPDATE* The New Forum Will Launch in a Week or Two

Hey all

The switch to new forum software will finally take place tomorrow (June 26, 2018). There may be some down time while everything gets migrated.

There will be some bumps and a small learning curve, so before you hate it, give it a day or two to get used to. We're pretty sure most people are definitely going to prefer the new layout and software.

There will also be a learning curve for administrators.

The Canon Rumors blog will see a slight change as well, and a bigger change on that front will come later this summer.

Your login and password should still work, if you have forgotten your password, you may have to do a reset.

Thanks!

Time for a 24mm Prime...To Get, Sigma or Canon?

It's time for a 24mm prime lens. I am apparently obsessed with this focal length after looking at my metadata. Out of the 34,285 images I've taken this year between 16-200mm, a considerable percentage of them were locked in at 24mm. I put a spreadsheet together to better illustrate this information for me...but it was honestly shocking to see how much I favor this focal length and how little I use 50mm.

Here is some of my EXIF data:
  • 24mm = 12.8%
  • 35mm = 3.5%
  • 50mm = 4.8% (not sure why I own two 50mm primes if I use them so seldomly now.)
  • 85mm = 34.4%
  • 135mm = 12%

So yeah...a 24mm is happening, but I find myself in a bit of a conundrum. Optically and technically, the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens is much better lens than the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM - as it should be since one is considerably newer than the other. However...I have quite a bit of experience with Sigma primes and I am not very happy with their autofocus accuracy consistency.

My Sigma 50mm Art was hit/miss on my 7D Mark II/6D/5D3. For whatever reason, it's also hit/miss on my 5D Mark IV and works pretty reliably on my 1DX Mark II.

My Sigma 85mm Art was so incredibly inconsistent that I sold it and got the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM. I took a step back in overall image quality, but the autofocus has been so reliable on the new Canon, that I didn't even care...it was a marginal difference at best anyway.

With the Sigma 24mm Art priced at $850 and the Canon at $1550 I could save $700...that's a healthy amount of money and the only reason I'm really considering it at all. But I'm so worried about the autofocus accuracy.

Primary use:
  • Wedding/Event (typically low light)
  • Detail Shots
  • Dual Pixel AF on APS-C video (focal length is about perfect for my video setup)
  • Astrophotography

I'm really leaning toward the Sigma right now because of the massive savings. It seems to be a superior lens in every way except for the lack of weather sealing and the potential for autofocus problems. While weather sealing probably won't be a problem because I'll just slap on a weather sealed lens, the autofocus scares me. I would love to hear about everyone's experiences with the autofocus on this lens. I've used this lens several times and actually had a pretty good experience with it, but that was in the bright sun and in a pretty well-lit room. How does it work in low light? How has the accuracy been over time?

Thanks for any help. I'm looking to pull the trigger by late July at the latest before my next race in Chicago. I have a wedding coming this weekend and MIGHT order it before then just to test its low-light...hmmm...maybe I just made the decision for myself. LOL

General purpose f/2.8 zoom for 80D?

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations for a f/2.8 zoom for my 80D. I currently have the 10-18 STM so I'm covered for wide angle stuff, and have the 18-135 STM for use in good light. Also have the 24/40/50 STM and 100/2 USM primes. I have the 24 STM up for sale right now as I just don't tend to use it much.

So far I've been considering the Tamron 17-50 non-VC, the 17-55 IS USM, the Tamron 24-70 G2, or the 24-70L II.

Obviously the 24-70 options are significantly more expensive, but I don't tend to use 24mm or narrower all that often (hence selling the 24 STM) and I would definitely use the 50/55-70 range if it was there. The 'ready for full frame' aspect is a bonus too if/when I upgrade to FF a few years down the road.

I'm looking to get something with good IQ wide open - if I have enough light to be stopped down much I'm probably just using the 18-135.

I've searched and read reviews and there doesn't seem to be a real consensus... the 24-70 II would be the clear winner if it had IS I think but it's also by far the most expensive.

Anyone have experience with one or more of the options?
