The EOS 80D Replacement to be a Big Leap Forward [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re hearing very little about new DSLRs from Canon, outside of a few mentions about the replacement for the EOS 80D.</p>
<p>We’re told that the next version of the camera will be a “big leap forward” for the line. With product cycles being longer, Canon is apparently aware that “future proofing” cameras will become an important part of their sales strategy.</p>
<p>The EOS 80D was <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/buyers-guide/canon-eos-80d/">announced 855 days ago</a> at the time of this post.</p>
<p>The same source also claims there’s a possibility that the EOS 80D replacement will not be called the “EOS 90D”, which is something we would find odd if true.</p>
<p>It sounds like a lot of marketing presentation information is at play here, as it’s all very vague. However, it does line up with some of the changes internally at Canon that we’ve heard about.</p>
<p>There is no mention of when the replacement for the EOS 80D will be announced.</p>

Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC USD (A034) Review | Dustin

I received a review copy of the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 VC (A034) a month ago, and I released my final coverage of the lens today. Here’s my review linkage:

Video Review: http://bit.ly/A034youtube

Short take: for Canon shooters the announcement of the 70-200mm f/4L IS II definitely causes some pause for those not on budget constraints. I think Nikon shooters may be more excited about this lens for that reason, as I feel that it is a very good lens, but not an exceptional one.

first shots from my sigma 105mm f1.4

these are shots from my 105mm f1.4 sigma art lens today...
i only had it for an hour.. so the first thing i wanted know .......
was ..how the bokeh compared to my 85mm f1.2 L mk ii

which i already sold..

i tried to see how the background.. looked
how the quality worked
I like to try to have a second subject...if I can...in the background blur...

and also I tried to see if it got too..'busy'....
i figured it already was a sharp lens.... and ...yup...that turned out good..
but the bokeh seemed very nice..... imo

and that is part of what i wanted....to verify
....
any way...it aint art...my shots..i mean........
I am just forcing the background ...in different setups...
to show its ... stuff..

so take it as you find it.. it is not science at this point...
i will do other stuff later..
I would have liked to see a coma test from LensTip...
but I am too early..

- so far - i believe it is as good as my 85L was

so i thought i would share

tom

https://www.amazon.com/photos/share/zSUd9fgGmtRGDe6gMNsnxaT21LbpBfB5BcWQlg2ykxV

the hummer feeder is f1.4, f2.8, f 5.6, f8

then second hummer feeder is f1.4, f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6...and f8

I wanted to see people rendered in blur behind a sharp main foreground subject.. you can see that with an f1.4 shot with some trellis stick in fore ground.
at f1.4 background blown out................. then at f8...... with a couple appearing in the background

so I am starting to think this is a reasonable replacement for the 85L mk ii... I sold
and thats what I waited for....
I did try the sig 135 f1.8 ..
it was nice but I believe this bokeh is better...

I will play a bit more before I decide..

I have not seen any tests or other pics posted for this lens..
I must have got an early copy...

UPDATE: lenstip samples here..just posted late...jun 20
want to see coma test ...

5D Mark V wish list

Well, maybe 2019 (early 2020?) will be the year a 5D Mark V will be released if there is to be one. While I don't care about video features (many of you do), there are a couple of things I'd like to see since I skipped the Mark IV.

1. Dual CF or Cfast slots.
2. 10 frames per second. (Though I'm single shot 99.9999 % of the time.)
3. 32-34mp.
4. Built in flash transmitter.
5. A couple of more rows of focus points.

The biggest thing for me would be the dual slots and that they match. No SD/CF or CF/ CFast. CF/CF or Cfast/ Cfast would be great.

What would you like to see?

CPS loaner process -- enthusiasts welcome (...sort of)

I recently joined CPS on the back of (a) a newly Canon facility in close driving distance that takes walk-in service/repair requests and (b) the loaner/evaluation program.

The first trip in to get my 5D3 serviced was A-OK and straightforward, but I had a weird wrinkle when I approached the loaner folks for my first lens to eval. Despite the 'enthusiasts are welcome' back and forth I went through before (see link above), the loaner folks (at a different site, it's based out of New Jersey, I believe) just asked me to verify my professional status before initiating the loan.

I caught them up on my back and forth with the CPS membership folks and forwarded on their prior CPS membership reply to me. I was told by the loaner folks that this is not the case, and that CPS 'must be a pro' terms are quite specific:

"Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The agent who sent you this response is incorrect, the Terms and Conditions of the membership state the full requirements (please see attachment below) I am sorry for the confusion and will see that all of our agents are up to speed on our qualifications.

That being said, even though you technically do not qualify for CPS at this time I do see you own an ample amount of Canon gear. I am willing to approve the membership due to your loyalty to the Canon brand and also your honesty was very much appreciated."

...and the 200 f/2L IS I requested is now on its way. I must say that I'm a little ruffled by the inconsistent messaging here. They took my money, after all -- even after being told up front about not being a pro.

I'll see if future loans are not approved or if re-upping my membership is not allowed next year. But has anyone else gotten any stick from CPS for being an enthusiast?

Gray wall jumping spider on my hand

I was pretty happy with the way these two turned out. I'm in the process of adjusting my diffusion setup to be a little softer and have less intense hot spots. I was running at 1/200s, ISO400, and f/11-f/13 with the MT-24EX at 1/8 or 1/4 on each head. I'm starting to experiment with more flash output (1/2) and lower ISO (200). Let me know what you think!

Patent: New EF-S 18-55 With an LCD Display?

HTML:
A <a href="http://thenewcamera.com/canon-patent-canon-ef-s-18-55mm-is-iii-kit-lens-with-display-screen/">patent has surfaced</a> pertaining to aberration reduction in interchangeable lenses.</p>
<p>Unrelated to the patent is an image showing an EF-S 18-55 kit lens with what appears to be an LCD display like we have seen on the <a href="https://www.adorama.com/ca70300is2.html?kbid=64393">Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II</a>.</p>
<p>The patent does reference a “lens information display”.</p>
<p>We’ve been told that a new kit lens is coming this year, and it’s possible that it will be a new EF-S 18-55 IS. Though we haven’t confirmed a DSLR that could possibly be announced alongside such a lens.</p>

A North American photographer gets the VIP treatment at Sony

Good read from a friend of mine at another site:

https://www.slrlounge.com/the-sony-story-no-one-tells-not-even-sony-its-not-in-our-nature-to-snuff-out-the-fire/

He's not a Sony fanboy trying to win you over (not a current Sony user), but he's certainly intrigued with what they're up to. I found this a fascinating read -- how the imaging / sensor arms of the business are independent, their philosophy on trying and failing, their goals with growing the entire market while it is shrinking, etc.

He still doesn't explain why my hands hurt just looking at an A7 with a GM lens on it ::), but I appreciated his read of things there.

Check it out?

The World's Largest Ultrahigh-Sensitivity CMOS Image Sensor

HTML:
Canon has posted an article about what they claim is “The World’s Largest Ultrahigh-Sensitivity CMOS Image Sensor”. You can see by the image above that the sensor dwarfs the Canon EOS Rebel T3i (600D).</p>
<p>This large image sensor was <a href="http://global.canon/en/news/2010/aug31e.html">announced back in 2010</a>.</p>
<p>As <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-whitepaper-the-worlds-largest-ultrahigh-sensitivity-cmos-image-sensor">noted by Canon News</a>, this sensor has no real impact on modern sensor technology, but it does show Canon’s ability to scale an image sensor up to a massive size.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>From Canon Global:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>A certain level of light is required when shooting with a digital camera or camcorder, and without it, images cannot be captured due to insufficient sensitivity.</p>
<p>In the pursuit of further improving the sensitivity of imaging elements, Canon has embraced the challenge of achieving higher levels of sensitivity and larger element sizes while maintaining high-speed readout performance, and has succeeded in developing the world’s largest class of CMOS image sensor measuring approximately 20 cm square. At present, the standard diameter of the silicon wafers on which CMOS sensors are fabricated is 12 inches (approx. 30 cm). As such, a 20-cm-square sensor is the largest size that can be manufactured based on these dimensions, and is equivalent to nearly 40 times the size of a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Increasing the size of CMOS sensors entails overcoming such problems as distortion and transmission delays for the electrical signals converted from light. To resolve these issues, Canon not only made use of a parallel processing circuit, but also exercised ingenuity with the transfer method itself. As a result, the sensor makes possible the shooting of video at 60 frames per second with only 0.3 lux of illumination (approximately the same level of brightness as that generated by a full moon).</p>
<p>Possible applications for this ultrahigh-sensitivity CMOS sensor include the video recording of celestial objects in the night sky, nocturnal animal behavior and auroras, and use in nightwatch cameras.</p>
<p>When installed in the 105 cm Schmidt camera at the Kiso Observatory operated by the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Astronomy, the ultrahigh-sensitivity sensor made possible the world’s first video recording of meteors with an equivalent apparent magnitude of 10, a level so dark that image capture had not been possible until now. As a result, the sensor provided proof that the frequency with which faint meteors occurred coincided with theoretical estimates to date. By supporting more detailed recording and statistical analysis of meteors, the technology could lead to an increased understanding of the influence that meteors may have exerted on the development of life on Earth. <a href="http://www.canon.com/technology/future/cmos.html">Read the full article</a></p></blockquote>

Sonykon = Sony is the head of Nikon?

https://www.dpreview.com/news/1234108119/nikon-d850-sensor-confirmed-as-sony-made

As many have suspected, Nikon's D850 sensor is from Sony, not Nikon-designed-built-by-Towerjazz as some have claimed. When looking at the short-term, one can brush this off as insignificant, as even Canon has used Sony sensors in some of their cameras. But looking long-term, the signs are ominous for Nikon.

First, the d850 is their all-around pro cam, besting IQ from their flagship, and many features that give it that status is from that Sony sensor. When Sony defines the main features, the control is theirs to determine the if/when/how on distribution. Of course, Nikon knows this too, so this is either a stop-gap to buy more time for their mirrorless efforts, or if they keep relying on Sony going forward, they have accepted the role as Sony's DSLR arm. It's like a car company using someone else to build the engine for one of their top vehicles - it's a significant capitulation in the DSLR space no matter how one looks at it.

Second, assuming Nikon is focusing their efforts in the mirrorless space, which becomes more relevant every year, it will eventually become Sony's competitor. Can they keep up with Canon and Sony in mirrorless? It is highly unlikely. As both Canon and Sony have shown, mirrorless bodies and technologies need at least a few iterations to become truly useable, and Canon at least has the ball rolling with aps-c, and with full-frame, they have implemented and refined their dpaf (in fact, I personally would be happy with a full-frame mirrorless based on the current 5d4 dpaf). Nikon has none of that yet, again, maybe Nikon is totally focused on mirrorless as we speak and will introduce fully competitive sensors/bodies/lenses. But chances are they are behind, and it's possible they will rely on Sony sensors again, in which case, now being in Sony's competitive area, they will play second fiddle to their technologies. It's like the relationship between VW and Skoda - Nikon will get all the older sensors and technologies as they basically become the lower-tier/lower-price mirrorless options for Sony.

Third, Nikon's market cap and resources are significantly less than either Canon and Sony. Yes they are part of the Mitsubishi Group, but that does not necessarily mean they can easily pull resources from the other groups within Mitsubishi. Canon's resources have allowed it to consistently rank 3rd over the years in the number of patents ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_top_United_States_patent_recipients ), even besting the larger Sony, whereas Nikon is unseen in these rankings. Granted, the number of patents does not ensure success, but it is indicative of R&D and future potential.

Putting all this together, I can't help but feel Nikon is playing more like the #3 camera player, and that Sony is their head, if not now, then increasingly so going forward.

Can anyone tell me what camera Natalie Amrossi is holding in her picture?

Hey all,
I was looking on canons learning site and reading up on their instructors when I noticed a camera, held by Natalie Amrossi, that didn’t look like a dslr but has a lens on it that looks like a 24-105. The link to the page is here https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/education/online-learning-photography-classes

Looks to big to be an m series and I don’t see an adapter on the lens. Wondering if this is an unintended preview of the new mirror less camera.

Four More Unreleased Canon Lenses Have Shown Up for Certification

HTML:
We reported a few days ago that Canon may be announcing two “professional” lenses ahead of Photokina, along with the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 and a new “kit” lens.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.nokishita-camera.com/2018/06/4.html">Nokishita has uncovered</a> 4 unreleased Canon lenses that have been found at a Russian certification agency.</p>
<p><strong>The four unreleased lenses have the following SKU’s:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>3045C005AA</li>
<li>2959C005AA</li>
<li>2963C005AA</li>
<li>2972C005AA</li>
</ul>
<p>One of these is definitely the EF-M 32mm f/1.4, but we’re not sure what the other three are at this time. <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/updated-ef-24-70mm-f-2-8l-ii-on-the-horizon-cr1/">We’ve heard rumors of a new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens</a>, perhaps with IS, other than that, we have nothing worth reporting at this time.</p>
