Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 Coming Soon

HTML:
It looks like we’re going to be getting another autofocus 85mm option, this time it will come from Samyang who will be announcing an AF 85mm f/1.4 very soon.</p>
<p>This joins the Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 in the company’s new autofocus line of lenses for Canon’s EF mount.</p>

Nikon Fresnel Telephoto Lenses

Canon started the use of Fresnel designs (to make telephotos smaller and lighter) with what they call Diffractive Optics (DO). First the 70-300 f4-5.6 DO then the 400 f4 DO (better received) and last the 400 f4 DOii (highly regarded). But they appear to have stopped.

Nikon started where Canon left off and seem to be doing it right with what they call Phase Fresnel (PF). They have a 300 f4 PF that is the ideal size and weight and reportedly excellent quality. Now they are announcing the same design in a 500 f5.6 PF. This seems to me the perfect alternative to a heavy and pricey 500 f4.

One setting I found on Sony mirrorless that makes them function more like a DSLR

I've been experimenting with Sony mirrorless, specifically the A7 III, and while I'm slowly learning the strengths of the camera and its advantages, right out of the box, the thing felt extremely finicky. Namely, the most irritating thing was the automatic switching between using the rear screen and the viewfinder to take photos. I rarely use live view on my 5D to take photos, and I didn't want it on the Sony. But in its stock configuration, the camera pretty much forces it on you.

With the stock settings, the screen is the default way to take photos, until you press your eye up to the viewfinder, at which point it switches to the viewfinder, and then it goes back to using the screen as soon as you move the camera away from your face. I just wanted it to work like a DSLR... Viewfinder for taking photos, screen for looking at them and changing camera settings.

At first I just shut off the automatic switching and used a custom button to manually switch back and forth between the two. This was ok, but it was still very clunky. It stopped the screen from coming on every time I let the camera hang down at my side, but after I reviewed photos or changed settings, if I forgot to switch back to the viewfinder, I risked putting the camera up to my face and staring into a dark viewfinder.

Finally, I discovered a setting hidden under the camera tab number 2, page 6 of 9. In here, Choose the "DISP Button" setting, and then "Monitor." (Seriously, I love the tech on this camera, but these menus drive me up a fucking wall. They're truly absurd.)

In this setting, you can see there are different possible displays that you can have the rear screen use when the rear screen is being used to take photos. Like the live view options in Canon, there are various things you can show overlaid on the screen like an electronic level, etc.

HOWEVER, one of these display options is "Monitor Off." It's unchecked by default, but turning this on is the key to making the camera function more like a DSLR.

Check this option (and uncheck all the others if you don't want the camera to have a live view function at all.) Also ensure that the automatic switching between the viewfinder and the screen is set to on.

After enabling this, when you take the camera away from your face, it will technically switch over to the rear screen, but if it's in that display mode of "monitor off," it will not act as a live view, it just goes off. This is nice because if you playback photos, or press the menu button, these will still show up on the screen, but as soon as you go back to shooting, the rear screen goes dark, and only the viewfinder is used for shooting, which will automatically activate when you put your eye up to the finder. So in this way it's very similar to a DSLR.

Hope this helps someone making the transition but supremely frustrated by the way the camera always seems to want to default to a sort of live view functionality the way I was.

Focus hunting when using Canon lenses on Sony bodies with Sigma MC-11?

Has anyone experienced some focus hunting issues when adapting Canon lenses onto Sony bodies? I recently got a Sony A7 III, and the performance so far has been pretty impressive, especially considering the adapted lenses. However, occasionally the lens will just go completely berserk when focusing. It acts kind of like a Canon lens on a Canon camera when it can't achieve focus and you have "Lens drive when AF impossible" set to "on." The focus racks way out, to the point where you have to grab the focus ring and twist it just to get the lens back to some kind of reasonable focus. At first I thought this was just the camera struggling in low light, but it's done it a few times in decent lighting. If I could just iron out this bug, I think this camera would really be viable to use with Canon glass, and I have to admit that it's got some very solid features. Hoping that Canon can come out with something that has all this technology and a menu system that isn't garbage. ::)

For reference, I'm using a Canon 50mm 1.2L and a Sigma MC-11 at the latest firmware on the Sony A7 III. I'm going to try a Metabones adapter as well to see if that's any better, as admittedly the Sigma adapter says straight up that it's only meant for use with Sigma lenses.

Patent: More Stacked Sensor Development from Canon

HTML:
<p>Canon continues to put R&D into stacked sensors. This latest patent for the technology is quite detailed in its delivery.</p>
<p><strong>According to <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/canon-patent-application-stacked-sensor-patent">Canon News</a>:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>This patent application is for suppressing the dark current and/or leakage current by using diffusion preventing films surrounding the bonding areas.</p>
<p>This is a very highly detailed patent application, going into a significant amount of diagrams and specifics.  It stands to reason that Canon is heavily investing it’s time in and energy into stacked sensors, and these patents seem to indicate just that.</p></blockquote>
<p>We’re all hoping for some sensor breakthroughs from Canon for the next generation of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.</p>

80D autofocus

Hi
It's time to upgrade my 60D, and I'm looking at the 80D. I'll be shooting a wide range of subjects including wildlife and sports. I tried out an 80D at a store yesterday and am confused about the small zone (9 point) AF -- when I tried focusing on people in the store at a nearby counter the AF jumped around a bit when the person moved slightly, seemingly guessing which of the nine points to focus on. Is this normal? Because it was set on Servo?
I'd like to know from 80D users how often you use small zone AF, why it is/isn't useful

Why Canon won´t design fixed lenses wider than 11mm?

Fixed lenses are easier to design than zoom lenses. The designer might optimize the project for only one focal lenght and does not need to worry about correcting distortions in several different focal lenghts. So, one could expect that Canon might produce a fixed lens wider than the 11mm, as it happened in the past, when we had the 16-35mm (and 17-40mm), but also the 14mm. However, today the widest Canon lens is the 11-24 (and also the widest rectilinear wide angle lens - hooray Canon). Why can´t we have an 8mm, a 9mm or a 10mm rectilinear lens? Is there a theoretical limit for wide angle lenses on DSLRs due to, for example, register distance or mirror clearance distance?

Updated EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II on the Horizon? [CR1]

HTML:
We’re told that a new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L is on the horizon. The source didn’t know if the update lens would have image stabilization, or if it would be an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L III.</p>
<p>Previous reports peg two new “professional” lenses would be announced for Photokina, and one of the obvious lens possibilities would indeed be a EF 24-70mm f/2.8L replacement.</p>
<p>THe EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III releases have updated two of the three “holy trinity” f/2.8L zooms from Canon. While this update could be great, we can’t help but wish an IS version of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L existed for the people that want it.</p>
<p>Take this with a big grain of salt for the moment and treat the [CR1] rating accordingly.</p>

Video Capabilities Will Be at the Heart of All Future Canon Prosumer Camera Bodies [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told a big selling point of all future Canon prosumer camera bodies will be video capabilities. Internally Canon has had a lot of discussion about improving the perceived feature set of prosumer cameras to match the likes of Sony and Panasonic.</p>
<p>We consider a prosumer DSLR to be anything EOS 7D Mark II and up. That said, we don’t think Canon has anything currently we’d consider prosumer in the mirrorless space, as much as I like the EOS M5 and EOS M50. Feel free to disagree on the latter.</p>
<p>The source claims that Canon no longer wants to lose the “spec war” with their future camera releases. This way of thinking is trickling down to various Canon subsidiaries around the globe to prepare for the changes coming.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/whats-next-from-canon-2/">we mentioned yesterday</a>, there’s likely going to be an accelerated product development cycle over the next 18-24 months, and video will be central to it.</p>

Custom White Balance for Canon 7D Mark II

I performed a custom white Balance for an afternoon sports Rodeo shoot. Using my 7D Mark II and was setup for JPEG.
When I reviewed my photos afterwards from within Lightroom and or ACdsee. The afternoon light displayed in the photos had a red shift in the color. Could I be doing something wrong? If I use AWB the color was more in balance. I need to verify but my colors should have been zero for balance.
Anyone else have a similar condition? Could it be because of JPG vrs CR2? I was shooting sports and needed the speed. the sunlight was hitting from a right to left. I can supply followup photo later.

What's Next From Canon?

HTML:
After last week’s announcement of the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III, most everyone around these parts want to know what’s next from Canon. While the roadmap is still a bit unknown for us, we do have some suggestions about what’s on the near horizon from Canon.</p>
<p><strong>Camera Bodies:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Prosumer mirrorless camera announced ahead of Photokina</li>
<li>One DSLR at Photokina</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Lenses:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Two “professional” lenses ahead of Photokina</li>
<li>EF-M 32mm f/1.4 ahead of Photokina</li>
<li>New “kit” lens ahead of Photokina</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Cinema:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>One more Cinema EOS body in 2018, some signs point to an EOS C300 Mark III.</li>
<li>New style of cinema camera body</li>
</ul>
<p>A couple of sources have said to expect an accelerated product development cycle over the next 18-24 months over the entire imaging lineup. We’ll let you guess what that means.</p>

Patent: Optical Formula for an EF 800mm f/5.6L IS II

HTML:
An updated EF 800mm f/5.6L IS is a lens I figured we would have seen already, but here we are still waiting for an update. For the moment, owning an EF 600mm f/4L IS II and a 1.4 teleconverter outperforms the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS in most of the important ways.</p>
<p>It looks like Canon is continuing to work on a follow-up to the longest lens in the current EF lineup.</p>
<p><strong>Japan Patent Application 2018-087965</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Focal distance 780.00</li>
<li>F number 5.80</li>
<li>A half field angle (degree) — 1.59</li>
<li>Image height 21.64 whole length of the lens 485.85</li>
<li>BF 128.77</li>
</ul>
<p>We’ve been told to expect new “big white lenses” some time in the next year, but we do not yet know which lenses in the lineup will see an update.</p>
