A Shake-up Coming to the APS-C DSLR Lineup? [CR2]

HTML:
It doesn’t appear that 2018 is going to bring us any interesting new DSLRs, we’re still being told that there won’t be another DSLR of significance released in 2018 (An announcement is always possible).</p>
<p>We’re also being told that the APS-C lineup is going to see some kind of a “shake-up” in regards to any EOS 80D and EOS 7D Mark II replacements. The EOS 80D is just over 2 years old and the EOS 7D Mark II will be 4 years old in September.</p>
<p>The source mentios that the shake-up is likely that the EOS 80D/EOS 7D Mark II duo will be split into 3 cameras with the EOS 7D Mark III being the top camera in the APS-C lineup annd two more cameras below it, one being an EOS 90D and a camera between the two.</p>
<p>With what we have seen recently with Canon’s Rebel and EOS M lineup, I think there’s always a possibility of more sku’s appearing at other levels of the product catalogue.</p>

Looking at Cine Lens Color Shifts Using Spectrometry

HTML:
If you’re in need of some geek, Roger over at Lensrentals.com has <a href="http://www.pjatr.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fblog%2F2018%2F04%2Flooking-at-cine-lens-color-shifts-using-spectrometry%2F">posted a new article</a> comparing color shift differences in cinema lenses. Included in the test are cinema lenses from Canon, Samyang, Sigma, Schneider & Zeiss</p>
<p><strong>What’s the takeaway from Lensrentals.com:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>For Cine lenses at least, a given brand does tend to have a given look, at least in focal lengths of 35mm and longer. The process we’ve developed seems to be correlating with real-world findings. The differences are slight, and I doubt significant at all unless you mix and match brands during a shoot without color balancing. <a href="http://www.pjatr.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fblog%2F2018%2F04%2Flooking-at-cine-lens-color-shifts-using-spectrometry%2F">Read the full article</a></p></blockquote>

A New Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens Coming? [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’ve now heard from multiple people that an update to the Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L tilt-shift lens is likely coming some time in the next year. The current version was announced in June of 2009, so we are approaching the 10 year anniversary of this highly regarded lens.</p>
<p>There has been no mention of the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II tilt-shift being updated as well. This lens was announced alongside the TS-E 17mm f/4L back in 2009.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

FTC reminds companies that voiding warranties under some conditions is illegal

I'm not sure if Canon has ever been very hawkish about this, but it's interesting to hear it reaffirmed that an electronics warranty cannot be voided just because you did something like open up a device on your own.

Have Lee rebranded their old ND hard grads as very hard ND grads ?

I have just received my first Lee very hard grad (ND 0.6). I can't tell the difference between it and the 0.6 Lee hard ND grad's I purchased in 2013 and 2016 !

When Lee expanded their range to include medium and very hards ND grads (as well as soft and hard transitions), was their old hard grad renamed as a very hard grad ?

Best remote for Canon Powershot SX60

Hello,
I would like to buy a remote for a Canon Powershot SX60 which I use as a "battle" camera for birdwatching and outdoor shooting. As far as I know there are 3 options:

1) wired remote
2) wireless remote
3) Canon Camera Connect app (for Iphone in my case)

I am considering this one:
https://www.amazon.com/TW-283-E3-Wireless-Shutter-Release/dp/B004BZMGMA/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1523449738&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=PIXEL+TW-283%2FE3&psc=1&smid=A2RDVNSPRYPCFK

Do you have better suggestions? They say the wireless range is like 10 meters (some people say about 20)
Not enough perhaps?
Is it worth it or it is just a waste of money and I can use just the Canon app?
How about the additional features (time lapse, etc.) which one are more relevant?
Thanks

Best lens for photographing paintings

I have a couple of clients I shoot paintings for, and this area looks like it's going to expand via positive referrals.

Up until now I have shot art with tethered 5D4, 70-200 f/2.8isII at around f/8 with polarizer and also polarized lighting. For larger works the 24-70 f/2.8II gets the job.

A bit of reading on the subject suggests I should be using flat field glass for better results, regardless of the lens corrections that Lr can automatically apply. I have a L 100mm f/2.8is macro which I imagine is flat field, but 100mm is frequently too long for most paintings I've been shooting.

Any suggestions on an appropriate lens? I see Canon has an ancient design 50 f/3.5 macro and a 60mm macro with useful tripod collar for quick rotation. There is also a pre-owned, superseded 45mm TS-E to consider.

Review: Canon EOS M50 by TDP

HTML:
Bryan over at The-Digital-Picture has completed his extensive review of the brand new Canon EOS M50 mirrorless camera.</p>
<p><strong>From The-Digital-Picture:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>While a complete beginner can use this camera to simply capture very high quality images, the advanced user who takes the time to learn this camera’s more advanced features can have great control over their imagery. And, with Canon’s entire EOS system accessories behind it, the M50’s capabilities are practically unlimited.</p>
<p>Whether it is tucked into a pocket, in a camera case for backup purposes or used as an always-in-hand primary camera, the Canon EOS M50 can always be there for you with professional-grade image quality. <a href="https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-M50.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>The Canon EOS M50 looks to be a great option for an APS-C mirrorless camera from Canon, even if it didn’t hit the mark with a “real” 4K implementation.</p>

Camera body temperature.

Hi Folks.
To avoid further derailing another thread, but following on from it to some extent, which cameras display the Camera Temperature in their exif files, in a way that can be easily read by software such as Flickr or FoCal Pro?
The only place so far I have found the temperature in the exif is on Flickr, DPP and DxO do not display much exif info at all!

My list for exif so far:-
20D no
40D yes
5D yes
7D yes
7DII yes
1DsIII yes
1Dx no
1DxII no

As an aside, what high and / or low temperatures have you seen on your cameras?

Cheers, Graham.

Ok, so I'm switching to Canon.. Please help!

So this is my first post, please be kind.. Been a long time Nikon guy (first camera was an EM) from the film days, have shot professionally for many years, and am heavily invested in Nikon lenses (which, along with promises of new features in upcoming cameras, has been the only thing keeping me with them this long..)

For the record, I have never been let down by the Nikon equipment I've used. The lenses have been sharp, the bodies for the most part able to take a beating, and I haven't had to rely on their customer service, which I've heard in not that great. I've shot the D2, D4, several other "pro" bodies and have many lenses.

Have been waiting for them to release a camera I can shoot both still and video with, which the D850 for supposed to tackle, but they continue to fail. While the dynamic range seems to be good, and the stills acceptable, the auto focus during video recording is an absolute joke. The camera focus hunts every few seconds like its having a seizure..

So.. I'm finally leaving and will be going Canon. Looking forward to the Canon color (most importantly skintones) and not having to do so much correction in post..

From what I've been reading, looks like I may be coming into the Canon world at a bit of, well, an awkward time. I want full frame, hi-res still, 4k video and as high fps stills as possible. Low light and high ISO performance is a must. I do not want the size and weight of the 1dXii (although i've shot with it and it really is awesome), which only leaves the 6dii and the 5d iv.

BUT... from what I can tell, the 5div, at least to some, was a bit of a disappointment, in terms of features - especially for video. And, it appears if I buy one now that I would be getting in right in the middle of the model cycle as some are hinting that the 5div replacement could be relatively soon and will most likely tick off all the boxes that people thought the mark iv should have had in the first place..

In case it's important, I will be buying the following lenses: 14mm 2.8, 50mm 1.2L, 85mm 1.4L IS, 16-35mm f4, 70-200mm f2.8 IS. That will get me close replacements for my most often used lenses.

So I need input on the body.. Do I pick up a 6dii and wait for the 5div replacement? Do I just go ahead with the 5div?

Things I like:
Canon glass
Canon color (skintones especially)
High enough (for my use) still resolution in Canon full frame bodies
Lens Options
Durability

Things I don't:
Crop factor for video on the 5div
Wish had wider and more AF points
Would love 4k 60fps
Old and clunky video codek

And yes, I know Canon and others make video cameras, but I want a still that will do respectable video (with the aid of sliders and gimbals). One set of lenses. One camera (and perhaps a backup).

Your input and advice is very much appreciated.

Industry News: Blackmagic Design Announces Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K for Just $1295

HTML:
<em>Next generation 4K camera features dual native ISO, full 4/3 HDR sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range, and ProRes or RAW recording to internal SD/UHS-II and CFast cards, or even external USB‑C drives!</em></p>
<p><strong>NAB 2018, Las Vegas, USA – April 9, 2018</strong> – Blackmagic Design today announced the all new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, a handheld digital film camera with full 4/3 HDR sensor, dual native ISO with up to 25600 ISO for incredible low light performance as well as 13 stops of dynamic range. It also eliminates expensive external recorders, as it features a unique new USB-C Expansion Port, which allows customers to record using the internal SD/UHS-II and CFast recorders or directly to the same external disks they will use for editing and color correction. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K will be available from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide later this year for only US$1,295.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2018 booth at #SL216.</p>
<p>The revolutionary new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is the handheld digital film camera that customers have been asking for. It packs incredibly high end imaging and professional features into a portable and affordable design that can be used anywhere. The compact body style is perfect for shooting independent films and documentaries, fashion shows, travel blogs, web videos, weddings, corporate video, sports and much more.</p>
<p>The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a full size 4/3 HDR sensor with native 4096 x 2160 resolution and 13 stops of dynamic range for true digital film quality. The full size of the 4/3 sensor is designed to perfectly match MFT lenses so the crop factor is greatly reduced, giving customers a wider field of view. It also features dual native ISO with up to 25600 ISO for incredible low light performance.</p>
<p>The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is packed with features such as a MFT lens mount, large 5 inch touchscreen monitor, 10-bit ProRes and 12-bit RAW recording, 3D LUTs, 4 built in microphones, mini XLR audio input with phantom power, Bluetooth wireless camera control, HDMI on set monitoring output and more. The latest Blackmagic Design color science lets customers shoot images that are far better than DSLR cameras and even better than professional digital film cameras costing tens of thousands more.</p>
<p>Designed using a space age carbon fiber polycarbonate composite, the body of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is extremely strong and light. The carbon composite material consists of a high strength polymer that’s reinforced with carbon fibers. This gives the camera body incredible strength and rigidity to help protect it from accidental knocks and drops which can often result in damage. The handheld design features a multi function grip which has logically placed buttons and dials that allow super fast access to essential shooting functions such as recording start/stop, still photos, ISO, shutter, aperture, white balance, power and more.</p>
<p>Fourth generation Blackmagic Design color science lets customers shoot HDR images in film, video and new extended video modes. The new extended mode combines the latitude of digital film with an optimized video file. This gives customers working on fast turnaround projects an ideal solution for shooting great looking images that don’t need a lot of color correction or post production work.</p>
<p>Images can be recorded onto standard SD cards, faster UHS-II cards or CFast 2.0 cards in either ProRes or RAW formats. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K can record 4K images at up to 60 frames per second and windowed HD at up to 120 frames per second. It’s also the first camera that lets customers record directly onto the same exact external USB-C media drives they use for editing and color correction. That means customers can turn projects around much more quickly because they don’t have to transfer files. All they need to do is unplug the USB-C drive and then connect it to their computer to start editing.</p>
<p>The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K uses the same MFT (Micro Four Thirds) lens mount as the original Pocket Cinema Camera so customers can use the investment in lenses they already own. The MFT mount is extremely flexible and allows for different lens adapters so customers can also use PL, C, EF and other types of lenses from manufacturers such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Leica and even Panavision.</p>
<p>The rear of the camera features a large bright 5 inch touchscreen that makes it easy to frame shots and accurately focus. It also uses the same Blackmagic OS as URSA Mini so customers can use simple tap and swipe gestures to adjust settings, add metadata and view recording status. On screen overlays make it easy to see recording parameters, status, histogram, focus and peaking indicators, and playback controls. In addition, 3D LUTs can be applied for both monitoring and recording.</p>
<p>For audio, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features multiple built in microphones with an extremely low noise floor, a mini XLR input with 48 volts of phantom power to connect professional lapel and boom mics, and a 3.5mm stereo audio jack for connecting different types of video camera microphones. The high quality built in audio recording means customers don’t have to carry around a separate recorder.</p>
<p>The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K also includes a full size HDMI connector which can output HDR video as well as a clean 10-bit video feed with optional on screen overlays. There’s also an innovative high speed USB-C Expansion Port for adding external accessories such as flash drives and an SSD for external recording. The camera uses standard LP-E6 batteries and can be charged via USB-C or the locking DC power connector, which protects the camera from being accidentally unplugged during a shoot.</p>
<p>“Customers love the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and have been asking us for a 4K version,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “We’ve listened and built a camera that combines all of our newest ideas and customer feedback from the previous model! The new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is exciting because it packs so much technology into an incredibly small design. We feel it will go well beyond what customers expected. It’s perfect for anyone that needs a truly professional ultra compact digital film camera. This is not a consumer camera that’s trying to do high end work, it’s a true high end camera designed for high end work.”</p>

Here are Some Interesting Lens Mentions We've Received [CR1]

HTML:
<p>The rumormill is a bit slow at the moment, but that hasn’t stopped lots of folks writing in with gear that may be on the horizon.</p>
<p>I figured it would be fun to let you know about a few lenses people have claimed are coming in the not-too-distant-future from Canon. I rate all of these lenses as unlikely, but I’ve thought that in the past with other lenses, only to see a couple of them turn out to be true.</p>
<p>There seems to be an abundance of lenses with built-in TC’s hitting my inbox.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS 1.4x / 2.0x TC

</strong><em>A crazy replacement for the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS with two built-in teleconverters?</em></li>
<li><strong>Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS 1.4x TC</strong>

<em>Another lens to replace the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS?</em></li>
<li><strong>Canon EF 200-600mm IS w/1.4TC</strong>

<em>A new superzoom with a built-in TC? Highly unlikely, but a nice thought nonetheless.</em></li>
<li><strong>Canon EF 14mm f/2L

<li><strong>Canon EF 50-300mm f/2.8-5.6 IS DO</strong>

Canon EOS 5DS Replacements Coming Next Year [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that Canon mentioned the replacement for the EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R in an internal presentation last week. The camera is scheduled to be announced in the first half of 2019.</p>
<p>The presentation only mentioned one camera body to replace both the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R. I don’t think this change in the line-up would surprise anyone</p>
<p>Canon is still <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-shows-off-the-120mp-aps-h-sensor-shooting-video/">playing around with their 120mp APS-H image sensor</a>, and a big resolution bump in an EOS 5DS follow-up would be nice.</p>
<p>No specification information is available this far out.</p>

Hi, I've done a search on this topic and can see that non-canon crop lenses (that don't protrude into the camera body) work on the 5D IV with its crop factor of ~1.7x, but I'm wondering if this will work on a 1DX Mark II also. Please tell me if my working is wrong, and your thoughts :)

Okay, so what I'm after is to be able to capture Image Stabilized shots with an Ultra-Wide lens. The perfect lens would be a 16-35mm F2.8L IS, but according to my other thread, that is unlikely to happen:

The full frame resolution on the 1DX Mark II is 5472x3648. Using Pythagoras the diagonal for the full frame is 6576 pixels. If I crop my 4K DCI video footage to UHD, I'm using the centre 3840x2160 pixels of the frame: 4401 pixels diagonally (well the hypotenuse). This is a 1.49x crop.

Canon EF-S crop factor = 1.6
Nikon FX crop factor = 1.5

Thus if I use a Sigma / Tokina lens designed for crop cameras I can get an EF mount lens with a 1.5x crop factor which would work well with a cropped UHD output from my 1DX Mark II, yeah?
1.49x is close enough to 1.5x ?

So I could capture the equivalent of 15-36mm footage in 4k UHD with IS with a Tamrom 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD. This lens also takes filters.

Is that mathematically correct? Thoughts?

Lee Filters and Filter Holder Protection

Hi all, and thank you for reading.

I am exploring photography using filters. Does anyone have experience with bags that would be able to safely transport, organize, and protect the expensive filter systems, while allowing for easy and efficient access in the field? I usually take a roller bag or photo backpack and want to carry them safely.

Thank you so much.
