Zack Arias Talks Unsplash, and Some Serious Issues With the Site

HTML:
<iframe width="728" height="409" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6M_OZWtpokc" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe><p>Professional photographer Zack Arias has posted a rather passionate video about the issues he sees with <a href="https://unsplash.com/">Unsplash</a>, a web site that gives away photography for free.</p>
<p><em>“Is this the race to the bottom that we’re all tumbling towards….”</em></p>
<p><strong>Zack talks about a lot of the issues he sees with Unsplash:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>There seems to be some legal issues with the site, especially when it comes to model releases for identifiable people, it seems some photographers think the Unsplash license provides this.</li>
<li>There is also the legal issues with images that show identifiable brands and property, you need releases for these images.</li>
<li>Getting hired because of Unsplash is likely the exception and not the rule, most people just come in, grab a photo and leave. They don’t look at your portfolio or even consider hiring you for commercial work. Obviously, some people have been hired, but again, that’s likely the exception and not the rule.</li>
<li>People can take your images from Unsplash and put them in <em><strong>THEIR</strong> </em>portfolio, as long as they don’t claim copyright to those images in their portfolio.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Back to the model releases, this is from Carolyn E. Wright from <a href="http://www.photoattorney.com">http://www.photoattorney.com</a></strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Proceed with caution with dealing with Unsplash. Photographers who contribute photos there may find themselves in a lawsuit for a variety of reasons. While an end user clearly has the responsibility to secure permission for a commercial use of a photo of a recognizable person (as evidenced by a model release), stock agencies and photographers have been sued for right of privacy/right of publicity claims when posting and/or offering for licensing photos of people.</p></blockquote>
<p>Zack touches on a lot of serious issues with Unsplash in its current form. If you’re posting images to Unsplash, please be careful and be sure you’re getting proper and legal releases. Inevitably, a lawsuit is coming.</p>
<p>Is it really benefiting your business? Zack makes a great point about a Condé Nast publication Bride’s Magazine using an image from Unplash for the front cover of a magazine insert. The cover of that advertising insert likely cost the company that took the image from Unsplash tens of thousands of dollars, how much did the photographer get? Nothing, not even a thank-you.</p>

Patent: Stacked, Curved and Other Sensor Patents

HTML:
Canon continues to roll out the image sensor technology patents, as we get to see some new stacked and curved sensor patents. Canon News interprets all of these patents below.</p>
<p><strong>Japan Patent Application 2018-019270:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>We have found another patent application dealing with some of the problems and issues with curved sensors from Canon. Unlike some other recent cuved sensor patents, this is a fixed design with a set curve.</p>
<p>This is an overall patent discussing a curved sensor in general, and goes into specifics on the curving without talking about a method of manufacturing, but details an image sensor, including details of an actual sensor electronically. <a href="https://www.canonnews.com/another-curved-sensor-patent-application-from-canon">Read More…</a></p></blockquote>

DJI Mavic Pro II To Get 1" Sensor

HTML:
The rumors are picking up steam for DJI’s Mavic Pro II, and from what we see, the biggest upgrade will be a 1″ image sensor, which would go a long way in making the drone a better stills tool.</p>
<p>Rumored Specifications:</p>
<ul>
<li>1″ CMOS sensor with 28mm lens</li>
<li>4820 mAh battery with 35 minute flight time</li>
<li>binocular rear sensors</li>
</ul>
<p>It’s<a href="http://dronereviewsandnews.com/rumor-dji-mavic-pro-ii-starts-production/"> also rumored that production has started</a> on the new drone and we can expect to see an announcement some time in March.</p>
<span id="pty_trigger"></span>

Patent: The Mirror Box Isn't Dead Yet

HTML:
<p>Canon has filed a patent at the USPTO for a new mirror box design. This new mirror box adds speeds and a reduction in bounce.</p>
<p>There are a lot of parts to a mirror box assembly, and it’s easy to see how the remove of this complex system could greatly reduce the cost of production and increase margins for camera bodies, but we’re not ready to be rid of it yet.</p>
<p>It’s obvious that an EOS 7D Mark III and and EOS-1D X Mark III will remain “mirror slappers” for their next iterations. We should also expect to see improved FPS in both camera bodies.</p>
<span id="pty_trigger"></span>

Focussing strategies with moving subjects

I want to use a 5DM3 and a 100-400 to shoot both photos and videos of kids doing gymnastics from a distance. The kids will be still in one spot and then run and do somersaults.

1.Is it better to use manual or auto focus for this?
2. If I choose manual focus, I can zoom in and focus on the subject before they start moving to achieve sharp focus, though once they start running, how do you ensure the focus is maintained?

Thanks.

Chargers, counterfeit vs genuine. ::)

Hi Folks.
Hopefully this might be of some interest to some who visit the site.
Some time back there were warnings about counterfeit Canon products and how they might be damaging or even dangerous.
Suffice to say I got caught by that old “if it looks too good to be true it probably is” adage! I bought a cheap “genuine” charger so as to have 2 available for charging a pair of batteries for a grip, the second I opened the package I knew it was fake! ::) ::)
Then someone gave me his failed charger after we had confirmed it was the charger and not the battery by putting his “too flat to wake the camera” battery (which had been on his charger for hours) on my charger where it started to recover within minutes.
So here are some shots of the innards of each, can you tell the difference?

4X3Z7501_DxO by Graham Stretch, on Flickr

4X3Z7508_DxO by Graham Stretch, on Flickr

4X3Z7505_DxO by Graham Stretch, on Flickr

Now I’m no electronics expert but it seems one is a lot busier than the other, the first clue is the weight, the counterfeit is very noticeably lighter than the genuine item then there is the shortage of components on both sides of the pcb.
Notwithstanding that some of this stuff might be to do with telling the battery how well it is charging, 3, 2, or 1 green square I’m going to guess that a lot of it is to do with the safety of charging the battery.
I’m sure that some of you will know what a lot of this stuff does and might be able to explain some or all of this circuit, if you feel inclined to share that would be really great and I’m sure I won’t be the only one to find it interesting!
Oh, I’m sure by now that most if not all of you will have worked out that the top 2 are the fake, the bottom 2 the real thing.

Cheers, Graham.

PS. I’m sorry the shots are not entirely sharp, it was a hurried setup whilst I had a short time slot, I’m hoping the fact that one side or the other was out of focus is because the camera might not have been true to the plane of the subject and not due to a tilted element on my 24-105 which I have dropped from waist height on to longish grass on a 45deg slope, the lens tumbled down the slope a short distance before stopping and I’m hoping that the grass with the slope and tumbling was more of a deceleration than an element shifting stop!
Lesson, don’t jam lenses in pants pockets that are not big enough to safely stow a lens and then start to walk!

More About the "Major Mirrorless Presentation", It's The EOS M50

HTML:
We’ve had a vague update to the “<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-sends-invites-to-dealers-for-major-mirrorless-presentation-next-month/">major mirrorless presentation</a>” we reported last month. It turns out the invitation was likely just for one specific country and wasn’t a global event. We never received a visual confirmation of the invite, but the follow-up from the source is enough for us to be confident of its authenticity.</p>
<p>Canon sometimes has a very different meaning than we do when it comes to something “major”.</p>
<p>The event is likely for the EOS M50. The form of the camera was probably revealed in the invite, the outline should closely resemble the EOS M6.</p>
<p>We’re hoping for something surprising with the EOS M50, but currently there are no reliable specifications out there.</p>

The List of Gear to be Announced in February, Including More Speedlite Information [CR3]

HTML:
We’ve known for a while what is likely coming ahead of CP+ this month, the trade show starts March 1, 2018 in Yokohama, Japan.</p>
<p><strong>Canon EOS M50

</strong>A mirrorless camera between the EOS M6 and EOS M100. We expect the price of it to be close to the EOS M6.</p>
<p><strong>Canon EOS Rebel T7

</strong>The replacement for the EOS Rebel T6.</p>
<p><strong>Canon EOS Rebel T100

</strong>A new low cost model below the EOS Rebel T7.</p>
<p><strong>Speedlite 470EX AI Auto Bounce

</strong>Judging by the name, this will be a flash with some new technology.</p>
<p><strong>New Lenses

</strong>If new lenses are announced, they’re likely to just be new kit lenses. We haven’t seen any evidence of anything too exciting, but there’s always a chance.</p>
<p>We’re hoping for a surprise coming from Canon for CP+, perhaps a development announcement or something exciting with the EOS M50.</p>

My 1st Digital Camera Reborn

I've noticed a Fujifilm MX700 being advertised locally on Craigslist for some time now, so when the price got down to $10, I decided to add it to my collection. A MX700 was the first digital camera I owned, I bought it 20 years ago in 1998, they ran over $400 and had all of 1.5 MP.

The original li-on battery was included, but it does not hold a charge for long. A 32mb Smart Card was also included along with the charger.

I tried it out briefly this evening, and it still works, it may need a internal battery to keep the clock running, I'll check that later. The Rear lcd has a few stuck pixels and I see some thin vertical lines, but the display is pretty good overall. I'll try taking some photos with it tomorrow, I already know that it needs lots of bright light.

Some of the 1st photos taken were of my retirement party, it miserably underexposed all of the photos. Then, I was at our new and present home site to see our new home being delivered, and snapped some photos with better results.

I've attached one as the family room section was pulled up in glorious 1.5mp color.

New Phantom v2640 Ultrahigh-Speed Camera Achieves Unmatched 4-Mpx Resolution

HTML:

<iframe width="728" height="409" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MWjtEG0fEFo" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<p>Vision Research, a leading manufacturer of digital high-speed imaging systems, has introduced the Phantom® v2640, the fastest 4-Megapixel (MPx) camera available. It features a new proprietary 4-Megapixel (Mpx) CMOS image sensor (2048 x 1952) that delivers unprecedented image quality at up to 26 Gpx/sec, while reaching 6,600 frames per second (fps) at full 2048 x 1952 resolution, and 11,750 fps at 1920 x 1080.</p>
<p>The v2640 features very high dynamic range (64 dB) and the lowest noise floor of any Phantom camera (7.2 e-)—making it an excellent tool for researchers, scientists and engineers who need to capture clean, high-resolution images at ultra-high speeds. The high dynamic range shows significant detail, especially in high-contrast environments, while the low noise is particularly beneficial when analyzing the dark regions of an image. It also has exceptional light sensitivity, with an ISO measurement of 16,000D for monochrome cameras and 3,200D for color cameras.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>“We’re excited to bring this extremely high image quality to the high-speed camera market,” says Jay Stepleton, Vice President and General Manager of Vision Research. “In designing this new, cutting-edge sensor, we focused on capturing the best image in addition to meeting the speed and sensitivity requirements of the market. The 4-Mpx design significantly increases the information contained in an image allowing researchers to better understand and quantify the phenomena they are observing.”</p>
<p>The v2640 has multiple operating modes for increased flexibility. Standard mode uses correlated double sampling for the clearest image, while high-speed (HS) mode provides 34% higher throughput to achieve 6,600 fps. Monochrome cameras can incorporate “binning,” which converts the v2640 into a 1-Mpx camera that can reach 25,030 fps at full resolution, with very high sensitivity. “The various operating modes also allow users to have just one camera to cover multiple applications,” adds Doreen Clark, Product Manager for the Phantom Ultrahigh-Speed family.</p>
<p>To help users manage the amount of data inherent in high-speed imaging, the v2640 is available with up to 288GB of memory, and is compatible with Phantom 1TB and 2TB CineMags® for fast data saves. Alternatively, 10Gb Ethernet is standard, saving significant download time.</p>

A New EF 70-200mm is Coming in 2018 [CR3]

HTML:
<p>A few days ago <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/another-canon-ef-70-200mm-f-2-8l-is-iii-mention-cr2/">we wrote about a new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III</a> was in testing, but we didn’t know when it was coming.</p>
<p>We have received confirmation that a new EF 70-200mm is coming in 2018, and again, we’re pretty sure it’ll be announced ahead of Photokina in August or September.</p>
<p>We’re not calling it an “EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III” for the time being, as a couple of our sources have hinted that there’s something “different” and “more” about this lens release. No one seems to want to let the cat out of the bag yet.</p>
<p>This is one of those rumors that is going to play out over time, we likely only have half of the information. Please keep your excitement in check until I have all of the information and can provide definitive answers.</p>
<p>I’m starting to feel that 2018 is going to be a fun year for Canon, more on that later.</p>

The Final Camera Shipment Numbers for 2017 Are In

HTML:
The final camera shipment numbers for 2017 are in and the year may show we’ve bottomed out in total shipments. 2017 saw an increase in total camera shipments, though 2016 was affected by the Kumamoto earthquake which caused supply chain issues for a lot of manufacturers.</p>
<p>The compact market continues to fall, but decline in shipments appears to be slowing considerably, even when you take the earthquake into account. This is an area Canon will continue to try and grow marketshare, as well as profitability with their G series compact cameras.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>DSLR sales accounted for about 65% of total shipments for the ILC segment, with mirrorless making up the other 35%. Adoption of mirrorless cameras is driven by Japan and Asia, as it’s approaching a 50/50 split in shipments. The split for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras in North America is about 85%/15%, and Europe is somewhere in between the two regions.</p>
<p>I don’t think we’ll see significant movement in the DSLR to mirrorless split in North America until Nikon enters the segment with DX and FX mirrorless cameras and Canon released a full frame mirrorless option and maybe an even higher end APS-C EOS M.</p>
<p>The death of the DSLR is still a long ways off.</p>

Time for an upgrade/change (1D mark II to 60D?)

I'm looking to upgrade, this is what I have:
1) Canon 1D mark II (8 megapixel 1.3x crop sensor from 2004)
2) Canon 50mm F1.4 USM lens
3) Tamron 28-75 F2.8 (which has a decentered lens element or something else causing blurry images in the left one fifth of the frame).

A local camera reseller (here in Croatia) is willing to accept trade-ins, so I thought I'd get something from his lineup.

I'm kind of torn between a number of options and concepts, so I thought I could use your input.

The two basic directions are as follows:

1) Keep my 1D and spend money on lenses... then upgrade to a full frame camera one day in the future (this means putting up with my 1D for some time longer)
2) Jump to 60D APS-C and get some APS-C glass and I could be set right away (this option gets me video now).

Option 1: Trade in defective Tamron, keep 1D and get:
Canon 70-200mm f/4L USM (without IS)
[dead autofocus] Sigma 17-35mm 2.8-4 HSM EX Aspherical - for the wide end
Canon 430 EX flash
I already have a fast prime - Canon 50mm F1.4 USM
So I'd be covered from 17mm to 200mm and have a flash.

Option 2: Trade in defective Tamron and 1D and get:
Canon 60D
Tamron 17-50 F2.8 VC
Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon 430 EX flash
I already have a fast prime - Canon 50mm F1.4 USM
Covered from 17 to 300mm and have a flash.

Option 3: Trade in defective Tamron and 1D and get:
Canon 60D
Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
Canon 70-200mm f/4L USM (without IS)
I already have a fast prime - Canon 50mm F1.4 USM
Covered from 18mm to 200mm but no flash.

There are so many other options and combinations...
Two other lenses which are the same price as the 70-200 are:
Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Canon 17-40mm F4 L USM

TL:DR
Which one of the three options above (in bold) sounds best?

Somehow I feel that being patient (option 1), and collecting some full frame glass, will pay off in the future when I decide to get a full frame camera.
For now... learn how to use a flash properly and work with the mentioned lenses.

The Coming EF-M Prime to be 50mm Equivalent for APS-C EOS M [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that the EF-M prime coming later this year will be a “50mm equivalent” and “fast”. If we had to guess, it’s going to be en EF-M 35mm (56mm equivalent) f/1.4 or /1.8. We know for sure that it’s not a 30mm lens and that it’ll be faster than f/2. We don’t know if it’ll have IS at this time.</p>
<p>Until we know the speed for sure, we’ll keep this [CR2], but the lens is definitely coming. I expect the announcement for this lens to come before Photokina, which begins on September 25, 2018.</p>
<p>The only lenses coming ahead of CP+ will likely just be new kit lenses, so there’s nothing too exciting going on for February.</p>
<p>We’ll have more lens news about Photokina soon, and it’s going to be a pretty big deal.</p>

<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The newly designed models are also complemented by a centered lens mount that fits six interchangeable Genuine Canon lenses, including a unique Ultra Short Fixed Lens RS-SL06UW with an impressive short throw ratio (0.54:1) and large vertical lens shift (-15 percent ~ +75 percent) for outstanding installation flexibility.</p>
<p>“These new projectors showcase Canon’s commitment to its customers and the greater AV industry, as many of the new enhancements are a direct result of feedback integrated with core Canon features of high image quality and compact size,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We plan to continue to nurture and grow our projector product line to include new technologies and designs to better optimize what is most important to integrators and end users alike.”</p>

<p>All six new projector models share these key technologies/features:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Superb Image Quality and WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Resolution: </strong>Canon’s renowned LCOS technology with AISYS-enhancement, which incorporates three WUXGA high-resolution panels, combined with an advanced color management system allow the reproduction of bright, highly detailed and color-accurate images.</li>
<li><strong>High Brightness (5800-7500 Lumens): </strong>The three new Laser models offer brightness of 5800, 6600 and 7000 lumens, and the three new Lamp models offer brightness of 5800, 6700 and 7500 lumens, respectively.</li>
<li><strong>Compact Design with Center Lens Mount:</strong> Ideal for multi-projection and stacking, these projectors feature a compact design as well as a new one-touch robust “spigot type” center lens mount system, which helps ensure lenses can be quickly and securely installed to meet a wide range of applications including those used in demanding environments.</li>
<li><strong>Versatile Connectivity with DisplayPort and HDBaseT Terminals:</strong> These models include multiple industry-standard interfaces including HDMI®, DisplayPort and DVI-I, as well as HDBaseT for enhanced installation flexibility and Wi-Fi® connectivity – which can be used to operate the projector’s Network Multi Projection (NMPJ) function and Canon Service Tool for PJ free app.</li>
<li><strong>DICOM® Simulation Mode¹:</strong> All models include a DICOM® Simulation Mode1 which can be ideal for those in the medical education and training field who require displaying monochrome digital X-rays, CAT scans and MRIs with superb grayscale gradation. This mode, which offers both clear and blue-base color temperature presets, simulates the results of devices compliant with the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) Part 14 standard.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>REALiS WUX5800Z, WUX6600Z, WUX7000Z Laser LCOS Projectors</strong></p>
<p>The WUX5800Z (5800 lumens), WUX6600Z (6600 lumens) and WUX7000Z (7000 lumens) are powered by a laser phosphor light source which provides long-life lasting operation of up to 20,0002 hours, and all projectors are equipped with a “Longer Duration Mode3” which is capable of achieving up to 40,0002 hours of operation. Additional features include 360-degree installation on any axis, fast boot up time of approximately two seconds, wide color gamut and HDR compatibility for reproducing content with outstanding high contrast.</p>
<p><strong>REALiS WUX5800, WUX6700 and WUX7500 Lamp LCOS Projectors</strong></p>
<p>The WUX5800 (5800 lumens), WUX6700 (6700 lumens) and WUX7500 (7500 lumens) utilize a traditional lamp light source and achieve superb quietness at only 27 dB4, suitable for installation environments that demand minimal noise such as schools, hospitals and art galleries.</p>
<p><strong>RS-SL06UW, RS-SL03WF, RS-SL05WZ, RS-SL01ST, RS-SL02LZ and RS-SL04UL Interchangeable Lenses</strong></p>
<p>Equipped with a simple, one-touch spigot mounting system, these projectors can utilize the six new Genuine Canon lenses, which all exhibit low distortion and offer flexible lens shift that helps support multi-stacking, blending and a variety of other advanced applications. These lenses have also been designed to help minimize brightness loss, thus eliminating the need to over-specify projector brightness to compensate for wide or long throw lenses, which can sometimes experience significant drops in brightness.</p>

Super Blue Blood Moon 2018

I managed to get a some photos of the total Lunar Eclipse (Blood Moon) of January 31, 2018. It was also very close to Earth (Super Moon), and the second full moon of the month (Blue Moon). A very rare, and amazingly spectacular event to watch -- especially since the clouds cleared up just for the event!

Who needs sleep?

Did anyone else manage to catch photos of this event?

Thought experiment on the intelligence of crows

I have known about the TED lectures for years, but only recently dived into the random search smorgasboard. And I cam upon this gem - I know it isn't photography but, heck, I hope you will forgive me. I know the crows are really intelligent but I found it fascinating and wanted to share:
