Trip to India - any advice?

I was invited to visit Indian wedding in the second half of February. The wedding is directly in Agra. I'm considering going to India for 2 days wedding and up to another week of sight seeing / photography.

I'm not so much concerned about what to take with me in terms of gear selection. I'm more concerned about what I can and what I cannot do in India in terms of photography. Eg. where can I take pictures, is there anything I must not take pictures of, am I allowed to take backpack with tripod with me anywhere I go or will I be required to leave it somewhere? Also any advice how to stay safe while traveling mostly alone with expensive kit is welcome.

Another part of the question is what locations / viewpoints would your recommend to visit during the trip? I'm considering Golden triangle: Agra, New Delhi, Jaipur but I'm open for suggestions. Agra and New Delhi are mandatory because that is where the wedding and airport are :)

Canon Sends Invitation to Dealers for Major Mirrorless Presentation Next Month

HTML:
We’ve been told that Canon is sending out “very elaborate” invites to select dealers and VIPs for a mirrorless camera announcement next month.

The invitation was described as being very high end, printed on heavy glossy paper and showing a silhouette of a camera shaped like the EOS M6 with a hole cut out where the sensor would be.

Apparently only CEOs and higher-ups are allowed to go to the presentation, no sales people are permitted.

I would say all of this would point to Canon announcing something more than just another entry level APS-C shooter.

If anyone has a picture of the invite, please send it to us.

more to come…

Will The Next Mirrorless Camera From Canon Have 4K Video? [CR1]

HTML:
We have confirmed that a mirrorless camera will be announced next month ahead of CP+ show which begins on March 1, 2018.

While we cannot confirm the “EOS M50” moniker is the camera coming next month, that’s the logical assumption based on past information.

We’re told by a completely unknown source that the next mirrorless camera will shoot 4K video. I was wondering what could possibly differentiate another APS-C mirrorless shooter from the current offerings, and this is certainly one way to do so.

I urge you to take this as a [CR1] rumor until we can confirm some specifications for the upcoming new mirrorless camera.

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 OS Sport & 70-200mm f/4 OS Contemporary Rumors Make the Rounds Again

HTML:
Back in early December we had a [CR1] report that Sigma would be releasing two new 70-200mm lenses. It looks like other sites are picking this up today as new information or perhaps further confirming the initial report. No additional information has been provided by any of the new report, so I think this is just a case of recycling.

We were told the following Sigma lenses would be coming:

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS Sport

Sigma 70-200mm f/4 DG OS Contemporary

We have not received any further confirmation that Sigma would be announcing these lenses ahead of CP+, so this remains a [CR1] rumor for now.

Lenses for my kit advice

Hi guys,

I have the following equipment: 5Dmk4, 16-35 L f4, 24-105 L f4 I, 70-200 f2,8 II and a 50mm f1,4
I am doing all kind of photography: landscape, street, travel, portrait, wildlife...

The 24-105 L f4 version 1 was fine with the 5Dmk3 but I am not happy with it on my 5Dmk4.

I can't figure out if i should buy a 24-70 f2,8, probably the Tamron, or get a new 50mm and an 85 mm (the Sigmas f1,4). In both case i would sell the 24-105.

Any advice? some of you may have had the same questioning? I don't want to buy gear that i will never use.

Thanks

Rebel just stopped?

I have an older Rebel Xs which has just stopped working. It won't turn on and the screen won't even flicker.
The battery is good, the battery compartment is clean, it has never been "bathed" or dropped or mistreated, but it won't work. I've never tried to update firmware or changed anything other than lenses. I am completely stumped. Any suggestions? It would probably cost more to fix it than it's worth, I know but I would like to know what the problem is.

Review: Canon TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro

HTML:
Photography Blog has completed their review of the brand new Canon TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro. I’m assuming this is a highly specialized lens. If you’re on the fence between it and the TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro, you should probably rent both to make the final decision.

The review is more of the same when it comes to the new tilt-shift lenses. They’re optically great, well built and will give you great results.

In essence, the Canon TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lens is a super specialist lens, but if you can get the best from it, or see a specific need for it, you’ll be extremely pleased with the results. Perhaps this is a lens to add to your rental list before committing to buy, as (like other TS-E lenses) it comes with a very high price tag. Read the full review

I’m interested in seeing some real world work done with this lens. Post some shots to the forum if you’ve had the chance to shoot with the TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro.

Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DN DC Review | Dustin

Just wanted to share linkage from my most recent review – the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DN lens. If you have Sony E-mount (APS-C) or M43, this is a pretty compelling lens.

Text Review: http://bit.ly/sig16DN
Video Review: http://bit.ly/16mmDNyt
Image Gallery: http://bit.ly/16mmCimage

Nice build, nice optics, nice autofocus. Not perfect, but very compelling. I bought one myself.

Headed to Belgium, what to bring?

I've got a few days in Bruges coming up soon for work. I've never been to Belgium, so I'm excited at the prospect.

All the camera gear I can bring must fit in the photo insert of my PRVKE 21 bag (see link with pictures of the photo insert here as well as in the comments where I share another photo insert shot), which means we're talking my 5D3 and 2-3 lenses, and none bigger than my 70-200 2.8.

My usual Europe loadout is 5D3 + 24-70 f/4L IS + 16-35 f/4L IS + [35 f/2 IS or 50 f/1.4] + filters + BR Strap. Know that I generally live in the 24-50 FF space, but cramped churches and city squares usually have me reaching for the 16-35.

So, I am looking for:

1) Places to go and shoot, most likely will be in the evenings after my work is done.

2) What gear you'd recommend and why.

Thanks!
A

Western Canada

Hello everyone,

A friend and I are interested in vacationing in western Canada this August with a car. What are some of the top places to visit and things to do? What is it like camping in those places? I read through the previous thread about this, but am hoping for some more input. I know there is one CR member who definitely knows the area (and posts pictures from there all the time).

(Anyone willing to let a fellow Canon-ite stay with them would be welcome too ;))

New EF-M Prime Likely Coming Ahead of CP+ [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that there are two new EF-M lenses slated for release in 2018, and the first one will likely come ahead of CP+, which begins on March 1, 2018.

We weren’t told the focal length of the prime, and we don’t want to speculate either. The second EF-M lens will be a zoom. Again, no focal length was given and this will come later in the year we’re told.

We’re expecting the already leaked EOS M50 to be announced at around the same time.

Review: Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro

HTML:
Photography Blog has completed their review of the brand new Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro.

This focal length in a tilt-shift is usually used for portrait & product photography, but you may also find some uses for it shooting landscapes.

The Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 L Macro Lens is a specialist lens, with a high asking price which probably excludes most ordinary enthusiasts from buying it. It does however make for an excellent option for rental, especially if you’re not sure if you want one – or if you have the patience to learn how to properly use it. Some of the more creative effects it produces can be a bit gimmicky, so again, renting it makes sense to see if you think you will get much use out of the effects.

Canon has produced a superb lens here, with excellent sharpness, high image quality and fantastic build quality. It is a more than worthy replacement for the older 90mm tilt shift lens, considering it now has “L” series designation and macro capability. Just like other tilt shift lenses, you pay a premium to own it, but for those who need one, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. Read the full review

Hasselblad Introduces the H6D-400c MS, a 400 Megapixel Multi-Shot Camera

HTML:

Building on a vast experience of developing exceptional, high-quality single and multi-shot cameras, Hasselblad once again has raised the bar for image quality captured with medium format system.

Multi-Shot capture has become an industry standard in the field of art reproduction and cultural heritage for the documentation of paintings, sculptures, and artwork. As the only professional medium format system to feature multi-shot technology, Hasselblad continues to be the leading choice for institutions, organizations, and museums worldwide to record historic treasures in the highest image quality possible.

With over 10 years of digital imaging expertise, the latest Multi-Shot digital camera combines the H6D’s unrivalled ease of use with a completely new frontier of image quality and detail. This new camera encompasses all of the technological functions of Hasselblad’s H6D single shot camera, and adds to that the resolution and colour fidelity leaps that only Multi-Shot photography can bring to image capture.

With an effective resolution of 400MP via 6 shot image capture, or 100MP resolution in either 4 shot Multi-Shot capture or single shot mode, the Multi-Shot capture requires the sensor and its mount to be moved at a high-precision of 1 or ½ a pixel at a time via a piezo unit. To capture Multi-Shot images the camera must be tethered to a PC or MAC.

In 400MP Multi-Shot mode, 6 images are captured, the first 4 involve moving the sensor by one pixel at a time to achieve real colour data (GRGB- see 4 shot diagrams below), this cycle then returns the sensor to its starting point. A further two exposures are made moving the sensor by ½ a pixel horizontally and then ½ a pixel vertically (see 6 shot diagram on next page). These 6 captures are then merged to give the equivalent of a single 400MP image, delivered as a 2.3GB 16-bit TIFF (23200 x 17400 pixels), for those seeking the utmost in image quality and resolving power.

The H6D-400c MS encompasses all the features and functionality of Hasselblad’s standard single shot cameras:

USB 3.0 type c connection for tethered shooting, high speed data transfers & 30FPS live view

Dual media card slots: CFast 2.0 and SD card

3.0-inch touch rear display

Smartphone style user interface

HD & UHD video

Modular system with improved back removal process

Technical camera connectivity (single shot)

Wi-Fi

HDMI & Audio I/O

True Focus II

The H6D-400c MS will begin shipping March 2018 with a MSRP of € 39,999 / $ 47,995 / £ 36,250 / RMB 319,999 / JPY 5,391,380 excl. VAT.

Pre-orders can start to be taken January 16th

The H6D-400c MS will also be available to rent through your local Hasselblad sales representative. The rental fee is approx. €399/day for short term loans, but you can save up to 50% of that cost if you rent for a longer period.

Canon EF 400 DO f4 IS iI Field Review

Recently completed a 'real-world' review of the lightweight Canon EF 400 DO f4 IS ii which I bought for our own use as wildlife photographers (my wife and I). I know that a couple of forum members on here really enjoy the new 400 DO like Jack Douglas and Alan.
We have been using the 400 DO IS ii for almost two years now and we spend a lot of days in the field, so have given our lens a good workout and we are confident that we understand its capabilities quite well.
If it might be something of interest here is the link:
https://www.grantatkinson.com/blog/canon-ef-400-f4-do-is-ii-usm-field-review
I am on trip right now so any responses to questions might be a little delayed from my side, as i typically have limited free time and limited internet access whilst shooting.
Cheers

Off Brand: Leica Camera Unveils New Prime Lenses for the Leica SL-System

HTML:
While I wait for a new Leica S body with an 80mp sensor, Leica continues to add to the SL system.

The new APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH and APO-Summicron SL 90 mm f/2 ASPH lenses embody superior performance and the finest engineering in compact designs

January 15, 2018 – Today, Leica Camera announces the first two editions of a new line of high-performance Summicron-SL lenses for the Leica SL-System; the APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH. and the APO-Summicron-SL 90 mm f/2 ASPH. that will be available in February for photographers across the country. Both lenses seamlessly work with the SL-System’s lightning-fast autofocus and, as with all SL-Lenses, have been designed and constructed in Germany with exceptional materials for a long work life, even withstanding the rigors of professional use while always providing superior image quality.

The focal lengths of these two SL-Lenses are ideal for all types of photography, and truly shine when used for portraiture. While the APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH., for example, captures exceptional natural portraits, the APO-Summicron-SL 90 mm f/2 ASPH. is a classic telephoto focal length for portraits with the often sought-after compression between the subject and background, ultimately creating the ideal aesthetic for exquisite pictures of people. Another great feature of these new lenses is their fast and silent autofocusing, meaning the photographer does not have to wait to take the perfect shot to quickly capture their subject’s best look, even for a moment.

Both the construction and design of the new, cutting-edge Summicron-SL line represent the continuing innovation in the development of lenses for the Leica SL-System. State-of-the-art, extremely precise manufacturing methods and measuring technologies were developed specifically for the production of these lenses. The results of these developments are reflected not only in the more compact dimensions and considerably lower weight of the lenses, allowing for greater portability, but also in their excellent imaging performance. As the Leica SL-System continues to evolve with new capabilities and lens options, the addition of these two primes further round out the Leica SL native lens selection, which now encompasses two zoom lenses and three prime lenses. Current Leica SL customers continue to receive new lens options at their disposal that can bolster their current capabilities, and new users have more selection than ever before.

Additionally, these lenses feature a new, faster autofocus system, as well as a considerably shorter close focusing limit for tight portraits of their subjects. The autofocus drive of all Summicron-SL lenses employs extremely powerful and robust stepping motors with DSD® (Dual Syncro Drive™). Thanks to this advanced focusing drive, the entire focusing range can be fully travelled in only around 250 milliseconds, providing photographers the confidence that they will always be able to instantaneously capture their subjects in crystal-clear sharp focus.

As both Summicron-SL primes deliver extremely high imaging performance at their largest f/2 aperture, the lenses are also ideal for photography in low-light or difficult lighting conditions. The Leica promise of ‘maximum aperture is a usable aperture’ also applies to the new SL-Lenses. Users can rest assured that their lens is capable of creating a tack-sharp photograph in any situation. Meticulous attention was paid to the prevention of stray light and reflections in the construction of the APO-Summicron-SL lenses. Together with optimizing the optical and mechanical design, the application of high-quality coatings to each lens surface reduces unavoidable reflections to an absolute minimum. Thus, photographers get a lens that always creates images with beautifully strong contrast, where other lenses may suffer from distracting flares and ghosting effects that detract from the photo.

All glass elements in any optical imaging system, including camera lenses, can sometimes refract certain colors of light at different lengths. Thus, not all rays of light from a multi-colored subject are always focused at the same point – the result of this imperfection is chromatic aberration, also known as color fringing. In order to reduce chromatic aberration to a hardly perceptible minimum, both new Summicron-SL lenses are Apochromatic, or in short, APO, corrected, allowing photographers to capture photos in high contrast situations without a distracting purple or green outline along backlit subjects. Further supporting this optical achievement, most of the eleven elements of the optical system, one of which is aspherical, feature anomalous partial dispersion and are manufactured from sensitive and specially formulated, high-quality glass. Without all of these state-of-the-art lens corrections, images could suffer from fringing, flares, ghosting or distortion. These incredibly well-corrected glass optics are what make a Leica lens special and so crystal clear.

The APO-Summicron-SL 75 mm f/2 ASPH. and the APO-Summicron-SL 90 mm f/2 ASPH. will be available in February. Both can be purchased at Leica Stores, Boutiques and Dealers. In the second half of 2018, the SL-System will even further increase its prime lens arsenal with the launch of a Summicron-SL 35 mm f/2 ASPH. and APO-Summicron-SL 50 mm f/2 ASPH.

Canon Was Quiet at CES 2018, Expect More Noise Next Month Ahead of CP+

HTML:
We sent this information out last Friday in our newsletter with some hopes of further confirming the following information. We know a couple of additional things that we cannot publish at this time.

Canon was the quietest it has ever been at CES if my memory services me correctly. Though they did show some neat concept cameras.

We didn’t get a PowerShot announcement for CES 2018, which wasn’t all that surprising. Cameras tend to get lost in technology that will never reach market and televisions.

We expect two rounds of announcements ahead of CP+ 2018, which begins on March 1, 2018 in Yokohama, Japan.

What’s coming?

Canon EOS M50

New Entry Level Rebel(s)

At least two new lenses

At least one new PowerShot G series camera

We haven’t heard if the EOS 90D will be announced.

No EOS 7D Mark III Announcement.

What I have found odd is the EOS M50 being called the “Kiss M” in certification. I don’t recall any other EOS M camera getting the KISS designation in Japan. It could be something, it’s probably nothing.

Three new Rebels? Color me surprised there. Sales of Rebel cameras have been hit the hardest in the DSLR decline, adding more sku’s to boost sales?

We’re not sure which two lenses are coming at this time, but we’re 99% sure we’re getting at least two in the first quarter of 2018.

There has been nothing about an EOS 90D, though this is a show they have announced predecessors in the xxD lineup. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a new APS-C shooter. The 80D sold very well and Canon would be well served to update it.

The EOS 7D Mark III is not coming for this show.

Review: Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro

HTML:
Photography BLOG has completed their review of the brand new Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro.

This appears to have already been quite a popular lens with Canon shooters, as I’ve received tons of thoughts and praises for the lens. I do know a couple of interior and architectural photographers that have been using a lot since getting their hands on it.

As expected, this new tilt-shift lens from Canon performs up to expectations.

This is a very specialist lens which is not for everybody. The high asking price probably precludes most enthusiasts, but for those who have a need for such a lens, you’ll probably find that it gets a lot of usage. It’s the perfect lens to rent for a couple of weeks to see whether you like it before investing in – you may also want to rent the other two new lenses to see which matches your personal preferences best.

Overall, the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Lens is a very impressive performer. Having the macro ability, as well as the L series designation makes it a fantastic improvement on the previous TS-E 45mm f/2.8 tilt shift lens, but you do of course pay a premium for it. Read the full review

Is Kodak Coin a Scam?

HTML:
Kodak Coin was announced to much confusion last week at CES. Beyond they coin, they also announced a mining computer, that most discarded as a complete scam, as it didn’t take into account the average of a 15% decline in revenue per month while mining bitcoin.

The initial coin offering for Kodak Coin is January 31, 2018

Photo Rumors has summarized a whole bunch of coverage on the new Kodak Coin, and there isn’t much said that’s all that positive about the new crpytocurrency.

“But what you definitely didn’t hear about (and that we were only made aware of this morning via MarketWatch) was that apparently on January 8th, the day before the big announcements, seven members of Kodak’s board of directors had acquired derivative securities (which are convertible into common stock); this according to SEC filings. So, in other words, the day before this major announcement many members of the board of directors got in a position to take advantage of the growth in Kodak stock when the announcements hit the following day. In fact, of those seven directors, two of them made stock sales on the 9th, and two more of them converted the derivatives they had just acquired and converted them into stock before selling them. So, four of the seven directors of Kodak made money on the announcement…” (Thephoblographer)

We found a deleted page that reveals the paparazzi roots of Kodak Coin: “The evidence strongly suggests that Kodak Coin is the re-branding of an initial coin offering called RYDE coin that never got much attention and was apparently aborted days before Kodak Coin was announced. Until recently, the project had a page on the crowdfunding site Start Engine. The page is no longer there, but Google cached a copy of the site on January 3.” (Arstechnica)

Despite being branded under the slogan “in math we trust,” Kodak’s proposition is indeed difficult to fathom from a mathematical perspective. As Ammous notes, given changes in Bitcoin block difficulty, anyone purchasing the two-year contract now would face ultimate gainsin 2020 amounting to around 30% of their upfront payment. This is far from the $9000 or $5600 gains the company promises.
