Looking for upgrade recommendations from T6s

Hi everyone,

I bought a T6s about a year and a half ago as my first DSLR, mainly to get better pictures of my son (he's 19 months old now) than was possible with an iPhone. Since then I've gotten pretty interested in photography... mainly family stuff but also a decent bit of landscape and wildlife for fun. My current kit is:

Bodies - T6s w/ battery grip, SL1 (bought used)
Lenses - 18-135 STM, 55-250 STM, 24 STM, 40 STM, 50 STM
Lighting - 2x Godox TT685c, Godox X1c, and a basic backdrop and a couple of lightstands / umbrellas

I've been happy with both cameras and plan to keep both (T6s for my wife and SL1 as a cheap/light camera for travel or situations where I don't want to risk an expensive body), but I've learned enough about how cameras work that there are a few things that the T6s is missing that I'd like to have.

Basically, I've come up with the following requirements for a new body and am looking for advice on what to do.

Must haves:
 • Touchscreen (both T6s and SL1 have this and I like it too much to give it up)
 • Anti-flicker mode (I expect to be shooting indoor sports with my son eventually)
 • Full auto-ISO customization (T6s and SL1 both only have a setting for "max auto" - I want some control over the min shutter speed)
 • Custom modes on the mode dial - at least 2
 • DPAF (both the T6s and SL1 are decent in live view but I have heard DPAF is a big improvement)
 • Dedicated rear AF-On button (I'd like to use BBF but find the T6s and SL1 awkward when configured to use the * button)
 • Better RAW buffer depth (T6s and SL1 are both ~7 frames)
 • Better low-light AF (T6s is rated to -0.5 EV and I've had a few situations where it's really struggled)

Nice to haves:
 • Tilty-flippy screen
 • SD card storage (to keep only one card format)
 • In-viewfinder level
 • Better framerate (T6s is 5fps and SL1 is 4)
 • Larger/nicer viewfinder
 • AFMA
 • GPS
 • Built-in Wifi (I don't use it that much but it can be handy to have)
 • Built-in flash (again, don't use it that much but it's occasionally handy)

I haven't had any complaints about IQ from the T6s or SL1 so I'm not specfically looking for improvement there but if it comes along with the above then I won't be upset :)

Budget is, as always, a consideration... I'd like to spend as little as possible to get what I'm looking for, but I'm willing to wait/save for longer if it's really worth getting something more expensive.

It seems like the 80D checks most of the boxes for me, but I have also been considering the 6D II for better IQ and higher ISO performance or waiting for the 7D III in hopes that it has a tilty-flippy or at least a touchscreen. Downside of both is the cost, with the 6D II also carrying the associated lens upgrade costs of going to FF.

tl;dr - Is the 80D a good bet or should I save/wait and get either the 6D II or 7D III? Or switch to Sony or Nikon? :)

Canon Concept Cameras Brought to CES 2018

HTML:
Canon didn’t announce any consumer cameras at CES 2018 this year, but they did bring a couple of concept cameras that did impress the folks at The Verge.

The first camera is a small brick shaped device with a flip out lightning port that would allow it to be attached to an iPhone. You could use the screen on your iPhone as viewfinder and likely be able to transfer images to your phone. The camera also pivots. One of the unique features of this concept, is it has a 100-400mm lens. This camera would also come with an detachable viewfinder so the photographer could shoot with it using their eyes.

The second camera is concept that is in working form. It’s shaped like the Samsung Gear 360 and is a single lens unit that can swivel 360 degrees. The point of the camera is to focus and film faces and objects in nearly all directions.

Both cameras seem to borrow from products that already exist

You can see the cameras and read more at TheVerge

We're Not Convinced an EOS 7D Mark III is Coming in 2018

HTML:
We sent this information out last week in our newsletter and we haven’t received any further clarity about the Canon EOS 7D Mark III.

There has been a lot of unfocused chatter about an EOS 7D Mark III recently, and in my experience, that’s not a good thing.

Our best source is telling us that they haven’t heard anything about an update to Canon’s flagship APS-C camera. That doesn’t mean one isn’t coming in 2018, but the earliest it would be coming is Q4 of 2018, and not the rumored first half of 2018 that we’ve been told previously and others keep reporting.

There’a always a possibility that Canon is changing the way they launch popular flagship products to try and make it harder for sites like this to leak information. Although I don’t think that highly of myself or that I would wield that much influence over Canon Inc.

We’ll keep you updated and we will resist posting about the EOS 7D Mark III until we get a better feeling about what is true and what isn’t.

Nikon Full Frame Mirrorless to Have New Z Mount

HTML:
According to Nikon Rumors, the upcoming full frame mirrorless from Nikon will have a new mount, dubbed the “Z Mount”. That name could change before the announcement.

Specifications of the new mount:

Designed for full frame mirrorless cameras

External diameter: 49mm

Flange focal distance: 16mm

This is where Canon could really have an advantage. If they can somehow make the 130million or so EF lenses compatible with a full frame mirrorless without an adaptor, they won’t have a hard time getting Canon DSLR shooters to add a full frame mirrorless to their kit.

Canon Asking Select Professionals What They Want in a Mirrorless Camera

HTML:
A good source has told us that Canon has been asking select Explorers of Light and other professionals what they think would make a professional mirrorless camera “compelling” enough to purchase and use.

In the same survey by Canon, they asked specifically what the photographers thought about the Sony a9 and medium format Fujifulm GFX 50s.

I will note that the likelihood of a Canon medium format camera coming to market is slim-to-none at best, perhaps it was more to gauge the interest in higher resolution cameras.

I’m not sure of when these questions were being asked, but if it was recently, that would likely tell us that a full frame mirrorless professional camera is not in the near future.

More to come…

UPDATED: Canon Italy Posts Image With Stolen Elements, No Credit and Taken on a Fuji

HTML:
*UPDATE*

DPReview has updated the story to shed some more light on what exactly happened at Canon with this image.

We spoke to Elia this morning, and he told us that after a bit of sleuthing he was actually able to uncover the source of the image: a royalty free photograph on Unsplash that was allegedly taken in October of 2017 with a Canon 1D Mark IV. Elia has asked that we not “out” the photographer, but you can see the EXIF data in this screenshot:

Screenshot by DPReview

From there, it doesn’t take an advanced degree to figure out what happened. A social media team at Canon Europe took to Unsplash to find a royalty free picture to share. They probably searched for “Canon 1D Mark IV” and “Italy,” and when they stumbled across this shot they had no idea that it was, in fact, not a single image but a composite of (at least) two photos… one of which was taken with a Fujifilm camera. Read the full story at DPReview

It’s strange to me that Canon would be this lazy in posting images. I find it hard to believe they don’t have a library of countless great images they could use for social media.

Well this is an odd one. According to FStoppers Canon Italy has posted an image to social media without credit, consisting of stolen elements and not even taken on a Canon camera.

It looks like someone at Canon took the work of landscape photographer Elia Locardi and used some elements from the image in a composite on an image Canon Italy posted to Instagram and Facebook.

From FStoppers:

So, the social media team for Canon Italy (and Spain) have posted a composite landscape, half of which was stolen, not taken with a Canon, and not credited anyone involved in the creation of this image. Rough day at the office.

Social media is full of brands stealing photos, not crediting authors, not expecting to pay for using someone elses photos. However, to see someone at a company like Canon do it, that seems even worse.

Photo Contest Help

My wife is working at a new medical school and they want to have a photo contest for the students. They were wondering about files sizes and printing. They want to be able to print on metal at 24 x 36.

The wording the put in the email to my wife and asked her to ask me is

"Electronic file must be a minimum size of 4mb at 300 dpi and a maximum of 15 mb size."

Do you think a 4mb file will be big enough to print at 24x36 and still look good.

Patent: Optical Viewfinder for Mirrorless Camera

HTML:
Here’s a strange patent application from Canon, an optical viewfinder adaptor for a mirrorless camera.

Canon News breaks down Japan Patent Application 2018-005126:

This adapter would provide the half mirror assembly that would split the optical path between the image sensor and the viewfinder, and allow for simutaneous use of the image sensor and that of the optical viewfinder.

The image sensor would be responsible for AF for one embodiment, the other embodiment has a seperate phase detect AF sensor.

There is a large group of photographers that just don’t like EVF’s and may never like EVF’s, so this could be a solution for them.

Me personally? It wasn’t until the Leica Q that I got over my hate of EVFs.

Canon’s Focus on Innovation Once Again Lands Imaging Leader a Top Five Spot Among U.S. Patent Holder

HTML:
Company claims third most U.S. Patents, placing it ahead of fellow tech giants globally.

MELVILLE, N.Y., January 10, 2018 – As part of its mission to redefine the boundaries of innovation and expand the possibilities of imaging technology, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has announced that its parent company, Canon Inc., based in Tokyo, Japan, ranks third among U.S. patent holders in 2017.

According to patent results issued by IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, a leading producer of global patent databases, Canon was granted a total of 3,285 patents in 2017. This is the 32nd consecutive year that Canon Inc., has been ranked among the top five U.S. patent holders and for the 13th consecutive year, ranked first among Japanese companies for the number of U.S. patents granted. The patents granted demonstrate the company’s commitment to using a robust set of intellectual property rights to develop visionary consumer, business and medical solutions.

“Having landed once again among the top three patent holders, Canon’s longstanding and continued commitment to strategic research and development through continued innovation is evident,” said Seymour Liebman, executive vice president, chief administrative officer and general counsel, Canon U.S.A. Ripples of Canon’s technological advancements were also felt in the production printing industry, where the company unveiled breakthrough new technology such as the Océ Colorado 1640 wide format printer, powered by Canon’s UVgel technology, which is the world’s first 64-inch roll-to-roll printer.

The patent news also comes on the heels of Canon’s innovation showcase at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) where its “Visionaries Welcome” themed-booth featured previously-patented technologies integrations in manufacturing, retail, sports and entertainment and experiential marketing solutions. For more information on Canon and its products, please visit www.usa.canon.com.

Canon Rumors Turns 10 Years Old

HTML:
I had no idea I’d be doing this for 10 years, but here we are.

The site started very casually a week or so after I was told by my wife that she was pregnant. I was off of work because of an injury and spending most of my day leveling up my Druid in World of Warcraft. While I contend vanilla WoW was hard work, my wife working two jobs at the time was probably harder work.

I had made some money in the late 90’s before the bubble burst on a desktop icon site called Icon City, it was a lot of fun and was even featured on Screensavers (I loved that show). Then the bubble burst and the site went away for various reasons. However, in the back of my mind, I always figured that I’d end up earning a living online, I just didn’t know how for a long time.

Fast forward 10 years…

I had always liked reading the camera and lens rumor section at Northlight Images, and figured I could do the same thing, but brand it as a rumor site. About $30 later, canonrumors.com was online.

The site was never started to make “real” money, though I figured I’d see some revenue to put towards camera stuff and maybe some rent. Then the EOS 5D Mark II came and traffic exploded and I started to see I might be able to do this for a living. It wasn’t too long after the EOS 5D Mark II that I quit my camera store job and focused 100% on Canon Rumors.

I get asked two questions a lot about Canon Rumors.

The best part of doing Canon Rumors for a living?

I’ve met a small circle of people that I consider some of my best friends through this site.

I was never a 9 to 5 person, I enjoy working whenever I feel inspired.

I love to travel and always wanted to be able to earn a living with a laptop.

You continue to meet exciting new people.

Advice for others who want to do the same thing?

Follow through, it took about 3 years of 5-10 posts a week before Canon Rumors showed any sort of “real” revenue that I could potentially live off of. I know some people have blown up on YouTube a lot faster, but I don’t know anything about that world. One common thing between a blog and YouTube, you must always be adding content.

Grow some thick skin as soon as you can. Living on the internet does expose you to people that can ruin your day.

Don’t take yourself too seriously. Be human. I realized from the start that I wasn’t a “journalist”.

Will I be doing this 10 years from now? Who knows, maybe I’ll retire a KodakCoin millionaire in the not-too-distant-future, or maybe I’ll continue to love doing this site indefinitely.

Thank-you’s (I’m sorry if I missed anyone).

Buff WhiteLight X1600: paint inside of snoot silver?

Just ordered a second studio flash (have a Buff Einstein 640), a Buff WhiteLight X1600. Mainly for the uncoated tube to do UV reflectance macro. In order to control excess spill of harmful UV, I got a snoot, but that loses 3.5 f-stops. Snoots generally are black on the inside. Has anybody painted it silver? or glued aluminum foil on the inside? How much difference does it make? Just in case you wonder, I don't want to paint it white because of the ubiquitous fluorescent UV brighteners in white colors.

Canon Rumors Forum Update Coming Soon

It could be said that Canon Rumors innovates slower than Canon.

The forum will be updated to a new platform in the next couple of weeks. I will be launching it "my way" and then tweaking it to constructive criticism over the following couple of months.

The new platform has a steep learning curve for myself, my developer and the forum administrators. In the end it will be a big improvement over the current forum.

One good thing is you won't have to update your password, that will come over to the new forum platform.

Other than that, we're not 100% sure what sort of hiccups were going to have, but we'll get through it.

For the record, I likely hate change as much as some of our more passionate forum contributors. I will be all ears after the switch has happened from the administrators as well as forum regulars and newbies.

Thanks in advance,
Craig

Do You Want to Take Your Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Apart?

I don’t, but Peter McKinnon did!

Before Peter sent his EOS-1D X Mark II off for repair, he decided it would be best to check out what’s inside on his own. If it’s already going for repair, I guess it doesn’t matter if you can’t put it back together… You’ve already done half the work for the Canon tech.

KODAK and WENN Digital Partner to Launch Major Blockchain Initiative and Cryptocurrency, CRCoin Comi

HTML:

KODAKOne platform and KODAKCoin cryptocurrency give photographers a new revenue stream and a secure platform for protecting their work

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Today Kodak and WENN Digital, in a licensing partnership, announced the launch of the KODAKOne image rights management platform and KODAKCoin, a photo-centric cryptocurrency to empower photographers and agencies to take greater control in image rights management.

Utilizing blockchain technology, the KODAKOne platform will create an encrypted, digital ledger of rights ownership for photographers to register both new and archive work that they can then license within the platform. With KODAKCoin, participating photographers are invited to take part in a new economy for photography, receive payment for licensing their work immediately upon sale, and for both professional and amateur photographers, sell their work confidently on a secure blockchain platform. KODAKOne platform provides continual web crawling in order to monitor and protect the IP of the images registered in the KODAKOne system. Where unlicensed usage of images is detected, the KODAKOne platform can efficiently manage the post-licensing process in order to reward photographers.

“For many in the tech industry, ‘blockchain’ and ‘cryptocurrency’ are hot buzzwords, but for photographers who’ve long struggled to assert control over their work and how it’s used, these buzzwords are the keys to solving what felt like an unsolvable problem,” said Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke. “Kodak has always sought to democratize photography and make licensing fair to artists. These technologies give the photography community an innovative and easy way to do just that.”

“Engaging with a new platform, it is critical photographers know their work and their income is handled securely and with trust, which is exactly what we did with KODAKCoin,” said WENN Digital CEO Jan Denecke. “Subject to the highest standards of compliance, KODAKCoin is all about paying photographers fairly and giving them an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new economy tailored for them, with secure asset rights management built right in.”

The initial coin offering will open on January 31, 2018 and is open to accredited investors from the U.S., UK, Canada and other select countries.
