Canon 85mm f1.4L IS USM First Impressions and images...

Today I got my new 85mm f1.4 L IS USM. I made some first sample shots - and I am blown away by this lens. It is really sharp wide open. I could not find any CA. The Bokeh is just wonderful: smooth like butter - and no onion type stuff. IS works well...

What do I want more?

I will prepare a detailed comparison between the Canon EF 85mm f1.4L with the Zeiss Milvus 85mm f1.4 and the Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art I hope to have this comparison ready within the next few days...

Meanwhile have a quick look to my blog: http://bit.ly/2zKesGi

It will be interesting to get your feeling about this lens

5DS 5DSR memory card question

I know there has been a lot of discussion about memory cards with the 5DS/5DSR and that the top compact flash cards can take more photos continuously before slowing down.

However I have a slightly different question. About the only thing I dislike about the camera is the delay after taking an image before getting the image review on the screen. I suppose it's not a huge length of time really but it's clearly slower than the 5DIII and I am sure part of it is down to the huge files but suspect part of it is down to me using slower cards.

The fastest SD cards I have are Sandisk Extreme 90MB/s and my fastest compact flash is another sandisk rated at 60MB/s.

So I wonder if anyone here who has this camera and some fast cards could tell me if things improve in this regard with the newer fast 160MB/s compact flash cards? I believe the camera only has the slower SD card slot so that's likely a no go. But I need a new memory card and trying to work out whether to spend the extra on a faster compact flash - if it makes image review come up quicker (I realise it will if I shoot 50 frames in a row, I'm meaning more in the day to day, shooting one or maybe 3 or 4 shots at a time) then I'll go for the latest SanDisk CF which is 160MB/s.

I feel this is an absurdly specific question for me to ask so I'm sorry but I can't find the answer online and would prefer to know before spending the money as the fast CF cards are expensive - I guess the format has been given another lease of life by the 5DIV sticking with CF so maybe demand is high for fast cards for 4K etc.

Is There a Definitive 85 to Get?

An 85mm lens on my 6D might be what I'll need most of the time for stage performances. My son just made the cut on one of the best high school jazz bands in the country. Yes, his life's over until May, but he's good with it.
There is a lot of metal so CA is maybe a top concern. I do shoot in RAW, but for some reason whenever I see purple where it shouldn't be I start screaming at my computer. Not sure why.
Thanks for any "best" recommendations although it's possible, I guess, that there's no terribly wrong answer.

Used Canon 35mm 1.4, advice needed

Hi all!

Looking for advice or any thoughts on buying a used Canon 35 1.4 Mk I, please?

What I found out:
Mk I is a pretty good lens, that´s for sure.
Mk II should be even better in all categories, besides bokeh and flare and price!!
Both, the new Sigma and also Tammy are said to be sharper, but the first has af-flaws, the latter is only 1.8.

Questions:
Is it true that the Mk I bokeh is the "creamiest" of them all?
Has the best build quality / best durability?

Why are there many tests out there, saying that sharpness of Mk I is only medium (or even less), while many others state that it is one of the best lenses when it comes to (center) sharpness - wide open ?
Is there a well known copy-to-copy-variation with that lens?
Are newer model years of a better quality?

Are there any well known problems with the MK I version (like the aperture flex with the 24-105)?

Would you buy one for a reasonable price?
Or stick to the newer versions (C/S/T)?

Thank you for your input.

PS: it will mainly be in hobby-use, hard to justify the pricetag for the mkII.

Canon 600D Wheel is Broken

Morning guys. Iam a COMPLETE newb to using my Canon 600D. However the problems with being a newb is when you purchase something you have no idea how to test it.

It appears the scroll wheel in order to change the aperture etc doesnt work. Is there another way I am able to change these. I know its a terrible question. Also poorfully explained, but its all I have. Ha ha.

The BCN Camera Rankings Are Out, Canon Leads in DSLR & Compacts

HTML:
<em><strong>Update: We posted these in error, BCN redid their web site, but have not added new sales data. We apologize for the mistake.</strong></em></p>
<p>The BCN camera market share rankings (Japan) are out and Canon continues to lead the compact and DSLR & compact categories and has placed 2nd in the mirrorless category.</p>
<p><strong>Point & Shoot Compact Rankings:</strong> (2016 marketshare in brackets)</p>
<ol>
<li><em><strong>Canon 27.3% </strong>(2016: 30.5%)</em></li>
<li>Nikon 22.1%</li>
<li>Casio 19.3%</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>DSLR Rankings:</strong></p>

<ol>
<li><em><strong>Canon 63.3% </strong>(2016: 56.2%)</em></li>
<li>Nikon 31.6%</li>
<li>Ricoh (Pentax) 4.8%</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Mirrorless ILC Rankings:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Olympus 26.8%</li>
<li><em><strong>Canon 18.5% </strong>(2016: 13.6%)</em></li>
<li>Sony 17.9%</li>
</ol>
<p>Canon is up big year over year in DSLR and mirrorless market share. This coincides with what I’ve been told the marketshare split in Canada is, apparently they have 72% marketshare in DSLRs and over 50% if you include mirrorless ILC cameras.</p>

77D won't fire external flash in live view

Hey Friends, who can help me fix this problem?

I'm doing some macro photography with my 77D and my studio strobes. I have a flash trigger mounted in the hot shoe. It works fine in normal viewfinder mode, but when I use live view, the trigger isn't triggered.

My 5D3 doesn't have this problem with the same trigger. I can't find anything in the menu that disables/enables external flash in live view. What am I missing?

Any advice?

7D MK II adjustments

Hey Gang.. Opinion Time..
I have pushed my 7D2 Hard in 2017 with close to 95k images and will exceed 100k by year end.
Alot of Burst shots for Sports and Birds!.

Anyone recall the life cycle for the shutter? This is a 2 year old body now and I will almost have 200k shutter trips.

Just what I'm asking should I send it into CPS for general cleaning/adjustments being we are going into holidays?

No major issues except using GPS (obtaining lock on satilite)

Buyer Beware: Counterfeit B+W Filters Being Sold on Amazon

HTML:
<p>The-Digital-Picture is reporting that Counterfeit B+W Filters Being Sold on Amazon.</p>
<p><strong>From The-Digital-Picture:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>A site visitor recently reached out to us with concerns regarding a few B+W filters he purchased on Amazon (via third-party). While shooting test images with the filters, he noticed a significant drop in image quality and suspected they may have been counterfeit.</p>

<p>B+W filters are a favorite of ours here at The-Digital-Picture.com, and we’re especially fond of their XS-Pro line. When people write into the site asking for advice on filters, B+W is the brand we most often recommend. As such, the image quality degradation the site visitor experienced using the “B+W” filters led us to believe that the filters were indeed fake.  <a href="https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=22622">Read the full story</a></p></blockquote>

Off Brand: Are We Closer to Confirming that TowerJazz Makes the Nikon D850 Sensor?

HTML:
Since Nikon started making digital SLRs they have predominantly used Sony CCD and CMOS sensors, especially in their prosumer and professional cameras.</p>
<p>The Nikon D850 has been rumored to not be using a Sony CMOS sensor and there have been plenty of unconfirmed reports that they may in fact be using sensors made by Israeli company TowerJazz, a company that has made sensors for Leica in the past.</p>
<p>It looks like we may have our first confirmation from the company itself that they are indeed working with Nikon on image sensors. <a href="https://nikonrumors.com/2017/11/14/first-indication-that-the-nikon-d850-sensor-could-be-made-by-towerjazz.aspx/#more-117494">Nikon Rumors reports</a> that during Q3 financial results conference call a few days ago, that the CEO of TowerJazz had this to say.</p>

<blockquote><p>In the CMOS image sensor market we are investing today in technology for three main directions; next-generation global shutter technology for the industrial sensor market; Backside Illumination and stack wafers for the high-end photography market; and special pixel technology for the automotive market.</p>
<p><strong>In the digital SLR market we engage with one of the leaders in the world in the development of their next-generation sensors.</strong> And in parallel on track with our 300 millimeter Backside Illumination stack wafer technology development with outstanding pixel performance.</p></blockquote>
<p>As Nikon Rumors points out, there are only 3 DSLR manufacturers left, Nikon, Pentax (Ricoh) and Canon. We all know Canon manufactures their own sensors for their DSLRs. With all due respect to Pentax, they probably don’t fit into the “leaders of the world” category from the statement above.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see what sensor Nikon puts into their upcoming full frame mirrorless camera.</p>

New Flash Coming in Early 2018, Aimed at Mirrorless Shooters [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that the new flash <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/new-unreleased-canon-gear-has-appeared-for-certification/">that recently showed up for certification</a> will be geared towards smaller cameras and mirrorless shooters, but give prosumer level features.</p>

<p>The flash was supposed to be announced in the summer of 2017, but has been delayed for unknown reasons. We would expect it is going to be announced alongside the Canon EOS M50 in January or February of 2018.</p>
<p>The Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT is quite small, but it may not be small enough for some EOS M shooters.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Interview with SOny Execs about A7R3

An interesting interview on Image Resource with Sony Execs about the A7R3. Not so much the camera itself but the main design drivers.

Before now, we didn’t have so many professional or photo enthusiast customers in our user base, therefore, the voice we can get is limited. But now with more and more customers including professionals, we are getting more information, and that helps us to make more decision to set our goals.

So it looks like they are admitting their main impulse was 'cram as much technology as possible' endless about 'can we design a usable camera'. So if they are now listening more to professionals (from their growing professional customer profile) they really will start to challenge Canon on other aspects than merely 'techno-wow'.

So once we launched Alpha 7R Mark II... of course, even before we launch Mark II we heard a lot of voices of customers, but when we had that model, then we need to get the feedback from customers for what we should do for third generation. And surprisingly, when we have that kind of information, yes, some customers want even higher megapixels. But a majority of customers requested different areas of development such as longer battery life, for instance…
...
And certainly I think the big thing that's happening in the industry right now is autofocus. From my perspective, image quality is good enough that you know, people can talk about 15 stops or 14, but really, for many people and I'd say almost more for consumers than professionals, autofocus has become more important.

Which really is the sort of decision Canon and Nikon have been making for years - much to the incomprehension of of some.

It was a shame they could not expand more on the timeframes of camera development because the little that was said was starting to get interesting.

TrustedReviews - Canon 85mm f/1,4L IS USM

Verdict

If you’re a Canon full-frame DSLR user who’d like a fast, well-built, optically stabilised medium telephoto prime lens, be prepared to fall in love with the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM. The image quality and centre sharpness it’s capable of wide-open is very impressive. While it’s not exactly cheap at £1569, it’s a price that serious photographers won’t mind splashing out on to give their shots the edge over others.

When will we see a macro lens update?

I know everyone is very excited about the possibility of the upcoming 50mm, but is there any love for the macros? Canon is unique in that they offer a lens design that literally no other company does in the MP-E 65mm 1x-5x, and the two 100mms and the 180mm are no slouch either. I am a huge proponent of the MP-E 65mm, and use it more than any other lens that I own. Macro is my niche, so I am 100% biased on this.

What strikes me as odd is that the macro lens designs have been around for quite some time (with the exception of the f/2.8L):

  • MP-E 65mm 1x-5x - 1999
  • 100mm f/2.8 (non-L) - 2000
  • 100mm f/2.8L IS - 2009
  • 180mm f/3.5L - 1996

The other thing that had me going is that two of the older TS-E lenses (45mm & 90mm) just saw an update in 2017, and the timeline for them is pretty similar:

  • TS-E 45mm 2.8 - 1991
  • TS-E 90mm 2.8 - 1991

Am I just thinking wishfully? Or is there the possibility that we could see a macro lens update in the near future? Again, the 50mm f/1.4 was released in 1993, which signals that the timeline for these lenses is nearing 25 years.

THOUGHT: Maybe the upcoming 50mm is an MP-E 50mm f/2.8L 1x-5x??? ;D

Thinking of downgrading / advice

So, my photography business is back to being a hobby. And I find myself mostly photographing birds and my children. So I'm thinking of taking some money out of the gear pile, moving from a 5D3 to a 7D2. And selling some of my other gear.

Is there anyone that has used both and can tell me what I'll miss and what i'll gain. I think GPS is a nice feature when birding. As I can record where I was hiking. Also the added speed might be nice.

For portraits/family I think I'll move from the 85 1.8 to the 50 1.4. Will be the 5th time I buy a 50 1.4 if I do. But it will give me about the same feel while using it.

On paper, the 7D2 has a much lower ISO. but I have no idea how the usable ISOs compare. I never use max ISO on the 5D as I feel its just not worth it. It doesn't give me the cripness I expect from a DSLR.

Delay a pulse to fire a speedlite

Since there's quite some photography knowledge here, I like to give it a go in the hope someone has a clever answer to my problem ;D

I have the StackShot Macro Rail and have recently bought a Sony a6300 next to my canon gear, just because it has silent mode so I can do lots of extreem macro without shutter wear.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to use flash as well and I own 4x 600EX-RT. Problem is: Sony doesn't support silent mode with flash trigger by the camera itself. I tested and if you do silent exposure while pressing the red test button on the flash itself you get proper exposure over the entire frame.

I have heardly any electronic knowledge, but what I would like to have is a setup where the stackshot controller itself triggers both camera and flash from the trigger port of that controller. The shutter lag requires a delay, which I have no idea how to manage that in a safe way since I don't want to kill my camera and/or flash. A radio trigger that supports a delay would be a welcome solution, but I have no idea if that exists.

Suggestions / ideas welcome :)
