The Canon EOS Kiss M / EOS M50 Shows Up for Certification

HTML:
<p>Nokishita has uncovered a new Canon camera that has appeared for bluetooth certification. It looks like it will be called the EOS Kiss M / EOS M50 depending on the market.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-32140" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/canon-728x151.jpg" alt="" width="728" height="151" srcset="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/canon-728x151.jpg 728w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/canon-768x160.jpg 768w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/canon-225x47.jpg 225w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/canon-610x127.jpg 610w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/canon.jpg 793w" sizes="(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></p>

<p>The naming scheme is interesting, as “Kiss” is usually held for DSLRs in Japan. Could this be the first EOS M camera with an EF mount?</p>
<p>We think this camera will be coming for CES In January at the earliest.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

5D4: 600EX mk II vs 580EX (esp. AF assist)

Hi,

I'll be traveling for a while and I am trying to minimize the amount of gear to take with me.

I'm taking 5D mk IV with 24-70 f/2.8 L mk II as my main combo (plus a 7D, 16-35 f/4 L IS, 70-200 f/4 L IS, plus a smaller/ lighter flash like 430EX).

I'll be using it for:
  • photodiary of the trip
  • people photos (including fast moving children :) )

I need a flash for:
  • AF assist beam where light is sparse (evenings, closed spaces)
  • balancing bright sunlight (there's lots of it)
  • fill flash

I am considering leaving my 600EX mk II at home as while these trips are far from extreme adventure we still manage to break at least one flash per trip due to it dangling from the camera when hiking, packing, carrying kids, etc.

Instead, I could take my trusty 580EX, it has served me well, was in repair (partial replacement) multiple times and I have a feeling it will be much cheaper to repair / replace it than the 600EX mk II.

I am wondering about the *practical* differences between 580EX and 600 EX mk II on this camera/ lens combo.

I've read that in theory 600EX mk II matches the AF system of 5D4 but a quick test yesterday seemed to show that 580EX copes fine.

Is it wise to leave the 600EX mk II at home and rely on the older flash?

Thanks!

A7RIII from Sony: Dpreview is impressed by Pixel shift

As this body is still not available, posted in this subforum.

Dpreview seems to be impressed by this feature....

https://www.dpreview.com/news/5645755619/sony-a7r-iii-pixel-shift-lifts-a-veil-off-your-landscapes

If you modify the studio scene with the 5DSR, the pixelshift feature seems to work quite well.
Not in every area of the picture (seems to create CAs)

Canon EF 135mm f/2L IS USM Coming First Half of 2018 [CR1]

HTML:
Every so often we get a mention of a new 135mm lens. The latest 135mm lens announced turned out be the TS-E 135mm f/4L, and I think there may have been some incorrect assumptions as to what the “135mm” lens was going to be, and we were probably guilty of that. I think most people expected an update to the EF 135mm f/2L.</p>

<p>We’re now being told by an anonymous source that another 135mm portrait lens is scheduled to be announced in the first half of 2018 and that it will have IS.</p>
<p>We’re still <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/new-unreleased-canon-gear-has-appeared-for-certification/">trying to confirm what two new lenses Canon will be announcing</a> in the first quarter of 2018.</p>

Any fans of Peak Design out there?

I have been interested in the PD Capture and accompanying attachment system for some time, but I have an obsession for unobtrusive accessories so I never acted on it. Recently PD had yet another Kickstarter to roll out their newest products which are lighter and more streamlined. The Capture v3 is slicker and the capture plate is almost 50% thinner (very important to me), so I ordered one. I will probably add a Slide Lite and an extra plate before they ship in December. These products are for my mirrorless camera(s). I intend to keep on using my Black Rapid slings for my DSLRs. Any thoughts/tips from current PD users?

Canon EOS 3 autofocus issue with modern lenses

I've tried two EOS 3 35mm film camera bodies now and they both have the same autofocus issue. At a certain point, once wide enough, they begin to back-focus, up to infinite, which becomes totally unusable. The lenses I've been using are the Canon 35L II, 24-70L II, Sigma 50 Art. It focuses fine when up close but becomes more inconsistent for wide shots and unusable at infinite. Anyone have any idea what the issue might be or how to fix it?

Here's an example at infinite. Focus was one shot autofocus on the pole at the back in the center. The same shot I took with a different body looks the same. This is with the 35L II

Off Brand: Sharp Announces 8C-B60A 8K Professional Camcorder

HTML:
<em>World’s First*1: Realizes Shooting, Recording, Playback, and Line Output of 8K (60p*2) Images in One Package*3</em></p>
<p class="sentence">Sharp Corporation announces the release of the 8C-B60A 8K (60p) professional camcorder, a world’s first, integrating capabilities for video shooting and recording, playback, and line output. The 8C-B60A was developed with technical cooperation from Astrodesign, Inc.*4 (Head office: Ota, Tokyo; President and CEO: Shigeaki Suzuki), a company possessing 8K image technologies.</p>
<p class="sentence">Besides the ability to shoot images in high resolution 8K (60p), this camcorder is designed to offer ease of use in shooting and recording and to lessen the burden on the camera operator in the post-recording editing process. The 8C-B60A’s image pickup device is a large, Super 35-mm-equivalent CMOS image sensor with 33 million pixels. Compression utilizes a coding method*5 that exerts minimal burden on the CPU, thus enabling efficient 8K (60p)-image editing and approximately 40 minutes of continuous recording (when using the bundled 2-TB SSD pack). Because it allows real-time output of 8K uncompressed images at the same time that recording is taking place, the 8C-B60A can be used for live transmissions as well.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p class="sentence">With this professional-use camcorder as the entry point to the creation of 8K images, Sharp is striving to disseminate 8K image content in its aim of establishing an 8K ecosystem at the earliest possible date.</p>
<p class="sentence">The 8C-B60A 8K professional camcorder will be on display at the Sharp booth at the International Broadcast Equipment Exhibition 2017 (Inter BEE 2017) at the Makuhari Messe in Mihama, Chiba, Japan from November 15 to 17, 2017.</p>

100-400 L II in combination with EOS M5 - Experiences

Hello,

has anyone experience in using the 100-400 L IS II USM lens on the EOS M5?
I plan to use this combination for an upcoming vacation and leave my 5D Mark II at home.

I don't own the 100-400 yet and can't test it on my own.

I mainly want to shoot landscapes and animals (no birds in flight, yes birds, but penguins don't fly).
I will also take other lenses with me.

regards
Frank

Did Canon get the color choices right on the SL2? Is the color choice a brilliant marketing move, or is it an act of desperation? Now is the time to have your say because (as we all know) all the Canon executives closely follow this forum and despite the fact that we are not representative of the market, will blindly follow whatever we suggest...

And most important, have fun!

The Canon 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Has Started Shipping

My card was charged this morning by Adorama in the amount of the pre-order for the 85mm lens, so I gave them a call. They confirmed that my lens was indeed at the warehouse and shipping out today. That puts the lens in my hands by next Tuesday or Wednesday.

I currently own the Sigma 85mm Art lens and didn't manage to sell it before the new Canon was released, so I plan to test these lenses head-to-head. I have 2 portrait sessions next week and one of them is with a friend, so I think I should be able to try out a lot of stuff.

I'll be testing chromatic aberration, flare, sharpness, and image rendering from 1.4-2.0. Nothing too scientific, but should be a fun time.

Even if I confirm the Canon isn't as sharp and has worse CA, I still plan to sell the Sigma...unless the new Canon really sucks - which I don't see being the case. LOL

5DsR mRaw quality issues

I've just bought a 5DsR for use as a landscape camera, plus wedding/event camera paired with my 6D.
I am very happy with the Raw files produced by the 5DsR. I ran a series of tests on my existing lenses including a comparison with my 6D using my 35/2IS and the difference was so great that I thought the 6D was misfocused! I reshot the 6D photos, but no change!. I am also happy with the dynamic range, which seems to be similar to that of the 6D.
My intention was to shoot the camera predominantly in mRaw as 28MP is more than enough for most purposes, e.g. shooting guests at a reception, with formal wedding photos in Raw. While the resolution of the mRaw file is great (much better than the 20MP of the 6D) I am unhappy with the dynamic range and colour cast of the mRaw files.
Here is a series of photos using my 5DsR with my 50/2.5 macro at f/5.6 and 400 ISO. Processed in Lightroom 6. Images are all 1600 pixels and the crops are equivalent to 100% of the mRaw file

(1) unprocessed file.
(2) Raw file processed Shadows +100%, highlights -57%, blacks -17%.
(3) Raw crop
(4) mRaw with settings from (2) pasted in.
(5) crop of (4)
(6) mRaw with additional processing: exposure plus 0.75, temperature and tint adjusted to remove colour.

Note in the mRaw image with the initial processing: darker, less dynamic range and (worst of all) green colouration, especially in shadows. I can improve the image somewhat with further processing, but its never quite right. I shot an informal portrait yesterday and the guys fingers around his girlfriend's waist in shadow were very green even after processing.

Your thoughts appreciated. And I don't want to enter into a discussion about shooting Raw all the time.

Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens price: $449

Priced to move:
https://photorumors.com/2017/11/09/sigma-16mm-f1-4-dc-dn-contemporary-lens-price-449/

If you are solely a crop/m43 shooter (and plan to stay that way), I'm hard-pressed to say why you shouldn't get this lens. You'd have to hate wide-open vignetting so badly as to step up to a much bigger/pricier FF lens to defeat it -- that's really all I can think of.

Yet still no word of an EF-S version. What a pity. EF-S folks are starving for better glass that isn't oversized/overpriced EF stuff.

We May Be Waiting a Little While Longer for a New 50mm Lens [CR2]

HTML:
This is bad news for a lot of folks, myself included. We’re told not to expect a new 50mm lens in the first half of 2018. Neither of the<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/new-unreleased-canon-gear-has-appeared-for-certification/"> two lenses that appeared for certification</a> is a 50mm lens.</p>

<p>This doesn’t mean we won’t see a new 50mm in 2018, it just won’t be for CP+ in February.</p>

Sony A7R3 manual drops -- here comes the fine print

Okay, here's the manual for the A7R3:

Re: 14 bit vs. 12 bit RAW, where they stick to their A9 / A99 II terminology of 'compressed', 'uncompressed' here, and 'Hi+' typically equals the fastest continuous fps burst (which is 10 fps in this case but is strangely not listed anywhere in the manual that I can see):

"The shooting speed during continuous shooting becomes slower when [RAW File Type] is set to [Uncompressed]." (page 43) --> so just like the A9 and A99-II, the A7R3 can deliver uncompressed RAW at high speed. The camera may / may not default to compressed 12 bit RAW when you jump to Hi+ shooting speeds, but the manual here would imply you can switch back to fully uncompressed RAW with Hi+ shooting, but you won't get the full 10 fps. (On the A99 II, this was still pretty close to it's max 12 fps from testing that has been published.)

Re: Shenanigans with AF getting locked during high speed shooting:

"When the F-value is greater than F8 in [Continuous Shooting: Hi+], [Continuous Shooting: Hi] or [Continuous Shooting: Mid] mode, the focus is locked to the setting in the first shot."
(page 43)

Re: temperature of the camera (not the WB):

"If the same part of your skin touches the camera for a long period of time while using the camera, even if the camera does not feel hot to you, it may cause symptoms of a low-temperature burn such as redness or blistering." (Page 8.)
