Google Hides a Custom Built Image Processor in the Pixel 2. They Call it Pixel Visual Core

HTML:
Today Google announced something they omitted from the October 4th announcements of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Apparently both smartphones come equipped with a purpose built image processor that is currently waiting for software updates from Google to activate the processor. Google also plans to open up the processor to third party camera apps.</p>
<p>Google calls this processor the Pixel Visual Core.</p>

<p><strong>From the Verge:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>it is Google’s first custom system-on-a-chip (SOC) for consumer products. You can think of it as a very scaled-down and simplified, purpose-built version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, Samsung’s Exynos, or Apple’s A series chips. The purpose in this case? Accelerating the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2016/10/18/13315168/google-pixel-camera-software-marc-levoy">HDR+ camera magic</a> that makes Pixel photos so <a href="https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2016/10/29/13466786/google-pixel-photo-better-than-iphone">uniquely superior</a> to everything else on the mobile market. Google plans to use the Pixel Visual Core to make image processing on its smartphones much smoother and faster, but not only that, the Mountain View also plans to use it to open up HDR+ to third-party camera apps. <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/17/16487834/google-pixel-visual-core-ipu-custom-processor-chip">Read the full story</a></p></blockquote>

Canon Celebrates Production of 90 Million EOS Series Cameras and 130 Million Interchangeable EF Lens

HTML:
<strong>United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 17 October 2017</strong>—Canon Inc. announced today that the Company has reached two major production milestones—a cumulative total of 90 million interchangeable-lens EOS cameras and 130 million1 EF-series interchangeable lenses. The EOS 5D Mark IV was the 90 millionth EOS Series camera range to be produced, while an EF16-35mm f/2.8L III USM became the Company’s 130 millionth interchangeable lens.</p>
<p>Canon’s EOS system debuted alongside the EF series of interchangeable lenses in March 1987 as the world’s first fully-electronic mount system for film AF SLR cameras. Over the years, both product lines have continued to expand, gaining support among users ranging from first-time users to professionals. Production accelerated in the early 2000’s with the spread of digital SLR cameras. Canon’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 14 consecutive years since 2003.</p>
<p>Since its conception, the EOS series has continued to develop revolutionary technologies under the series concept of “speed and comfort”. Canon has since developed every key device in-house including the CMOS sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses—employed in the EOS series. Particularly noteworthy are the Company’s EF lenses, which lead the industry in sales and feature such world-first3innovations such as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology and a multilayered Diffractive Optical (DO) element.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>Canon will continue to strengthen and expand the EOS series and EF lens lineups by refining its imaging technologies, by striving to combine optics, stills, video and network technologies. The Company will also continue its pursuit of manufacturing products that are both stylish and reliable.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-31786" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/eoscameras-728x245.jpg" alt="" width="728" height="245" srcset="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/eoscameras.jpg 728w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/eoscameras-225x76.jpg 225w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/eoscameras-610x205.jpg 610w" sizes="(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></p>
<p>The EOS series of interchangeable-lens cameras began with the EOS 650 SLR camera, released in March 1987, that not only featured the world’s first electronic lens mounting system, but also fully digitized communication between the camera body and lens to produce a new generation of autofocus technology.</p>

<p>As film cameras boomed, Canon launched several models covering a wide range of user needs, including the EOS-1 in 1989, aimed at professionals, and the EOS 500 in 1993, which achieved a compact, lightweight design and greatly expanded Canon’s user base. Then in 2003, during the early years of the digital camera age, the Company released the groundbreaking EOS 300D Digital, an entry-level digital SLR camera that offered a compact, lightweight body at an affordable price. This move would trigger a massive expansion of the camera market, with Canon claiming the overwhelming lead in market share that same year. With the later release of the EOS-1D Series for professionals and the EOS 5D series, which helped popularize video capture using SLR cameras, Canon has continued to release epoch-making products that have enabled the Company to maintain the No. 1 share of the global interchangeable-lens digital camera market for 14 consecutive years from 2003 to 2016.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-31785 size-large" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/eflenses-728x234.jpg" alt="" width="728" height="234" srcset="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/eflenses.jpg 728w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/eflenses-225x72.jpg 225w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/eflenses-610x196.jpg 610w" sizes="(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></p>
<p>Since the release of the first EF lens, launched alongside the EOS series in 1987, Canon has produced EF lenses featuring world-first technologies such as the EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM with IS in 1995, the EF400mm f/4 DO IS USM with a DO lens in 2001 and the EF24mm f/1.4L II USM, treated with highly antireflective</p>
<p>Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) in 2008. In 2015 Canon released the EF11-24mm f/4L USM, the world’s first4 ultra-wide-angle zoom lens to achieve an 11mm focal length.</p>
<p>Today, Canon boasts 93 lenses5 in its rich EF lens lineup that comprises of lenses such as an ultra-wide-angle 8 mm focal length lens, an 800mm focal length super-telephoto lens and EF Cinema Series lenses for video production. With a wide selection of lenses for every purpose including zoom lenses, IS-equipped lenses, fast-aperture lenses, macro lenses and even the TS-E tilt-shift lenses, Canon is well-positioned to meet the needs of various users.</p>

Google Pixel 2 Sample Image Gallery

HTML:
DPReview has posted a sample gallery of real world images from the Google Pixel 2, keep in mind that the Pixel 2 XL has the same internal camera components. I mostly wanted to see how the portrait mode worked, and on a couple of images, I think it does a nice job. It looks like it won’t be the most reliable feature, but hopefully software updates will improve the feature over time.</p>

<p>Noise performance looks to be what one would expect with such a small sensor and color rendition is going to be hit or miss for people, as that generally comes down to personal preference.</p>

Linked Shooting mode ST-E3-RT Advice

Since my 1DX2 doesn't have remote unless I fork out big dollars I am wondering if this is a viable option - mount the 600 flash on the camera and use the ST-E3-RT as a remote trigger. I guess the obvious downside is that it's just shutter release. I can purchase a trigger that is useful to me for flash purposes for USD $140 and that's what started this thought process. Anyone using this mode?

Canon Lens instant rebates

Hey guys... i am looking to buy a 70-300L lens... I see it currently sits around 1350 new... Do any of you know if Canon plans on offering any lens rebates (other than their current buy 2 lenses and get a mail in rebate) program? Also, given the past, do you suspect it would be beneficial to wait for black friday? I'm in no rush and I can wait, however if there are no expected rebates or sales in this kind of gear come black friday, i may just get it over with...

Any rumors on an F/1.4L prime between 20mm and 24mm?

Hi,

I'm into landscapes and night landscapes - I love milky way photos - but I'm quite puzzled by the available options. The obvious choice is the 24mm F1.4L II, which I own, but the coma is gross. The 14mm F/2.8L performs poorly with coma too. I want to buy a Canon F/1.4L lens of a really good quality, low coma and 24mm or wider as this is my passion, and would pay Zeiss Otus money if it was optically excellent and wide. It seems like a huge hole in the Canon line up. Does anyone feel the same way?

Lets start this rumor. The EF 20mm F/1.4L. When size, weight and cost aren't as important as coma correction and being able to use it at F1.4 without reservation.

Mike.

Canon Patent: Tilt-Shift Lenses With Autofocus and Image Stabilization

HTML:
<em><strong>Correction:</strong> I said this patent was from 2010, when it is in fact from July of 2017.</em></p>
<p>Keith over at Northlight uncovered a patent application from <del>2010</del> July, 2017 that shows a tilt-shift lens with both autofocus and image stabilization.</p>
<p><strong>Patent Summary:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Whilst it is a form of AF, it’s actually mentioned in the patent for correction of tilt angle. The lens also has sensors to feed back tilt and shift details for the camera to decide how to manage all this stuff. Conventional AF is also a feature (it’s a patent application so can have all kinds of whistles and bells included). <em><a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-ef-lenses-rumours-and-news/">Read more at Northlight</a></em></p>

<p>Keith also <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/using-lens-tilt-on-your-digital-slr/">wrote an article as to why focus affects tilt</a>, which helps explain why we don’t have autofocus tilt-shift lenses currently.</p>

<p><strong>Ultimate in Compact Image Quality</strong></p>

<p>The new Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III offers dramatic improvements from the series’ previous flagship, the PowerShot G1X Mark II, headlined by a larger, 24.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, resulting in fantastic image quality in both stills and video. This dramatic sensor upgrade pairs with a wide-angle 24-72mm** (3x zoom) lens with Optical Image Stabilization featuring a wide f/2.8-5.6 aperture to allow for maximum brightness and increased sharpness in images and an ISO range of 100-25,600. This provides users with the versatility to shoot in low-light scenarios like a dimly lit restaurant which can frame subjects with beautiful background blur.</p>
<p>Technology commonly found in Canon DSLRs and advanced cameras has now arrived for the first time in the PowerShot G-series, as the G1X Mark III will feature Canon’s acclaimed Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. This feature, popular amongst enthusiast and professional users, provides extremely fast and smooth autofocus capabilities across nearly the entire focal plane, allowing for more creative compositions when framing a subject away from the center of a shot.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Versatile and Intuitive Operation</strong></p>
<p>Dust and water resistant, the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III is a compact and powerful imaging companion ready for a variety of challenging shooting scenarios. Designed for enthusiast and professional users, it offers a host of useful features to help inspire creativity and improve operability. These include:</p>
<p>• 2.36 million dot Organic LED Electronic Viewfinder provides customization options to match nearly any shooting style or scene

• Touch & Drag AF allows for intuitive operation linking the Electronic Viewfinder and touch panel monitor to quickly adjust focus targeting without looking away from the viewfinder, or using Smooth Zone AF to effortlessly track subjects with the touch of a finger.

• 3.0 inch Vari-angle Touch LCD Monitor helps capture the perfect shot from a variety of challenging angles, including overhead or low-angle shooting.

walk around lens

I am thinking of getting a walk around lens for non-photographic travels. I have Canon's 24-105 but would like to get something that is longer and possibly wider (though I may need two lens). While I tend to favor Canon lenses I think I will need to look to other manufacturer to find what I need.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

DJI Cinema Camera

This caught my eye, I'm not nor ever will be a serious video or cinema photographer, but what is interesting is that DJI has expanded its photographic capabilities so quickly in the past 2 years. Buying a big chunk of Hasselblad may have allowed for technology expertise to start doing things they wanted.

We've all been waiting for the Chinese photography industry to take off and blow away the old high priced establishment. Its starting to look like DJI might be the current candidate to do it in the next five years.

They have not yet targeted conventional still or video cameras, but with the technology they have, its only packaging.

Big Bend trip == better buy toys

Alright, time to listen to the internet on how to spend my money.

Decided to do a backpacking trip to Big bend in about a month. Naturally I am using this as an excuse to satisfy GAS. Have about 1800 in my camera fund saved up from the last couple years. Don't need a better body, so what lenses should I look at.

have a general purpose, a 70-200, and a 50mm so most obvious is a wide angle is in play. I have been looking at Tamron 15-30 and Canon 16-35 f4, but each has tradeoffs that I can't decide between.

question is. What is your opinion between the two? What are my other options for wide angle? Finally what other lenses should I look at for a trip like this?

60mm Macro lens equivalent for Full Frame

Does anyone know of a good macro lens that would be the equivalent of a 60mm but for full frame? I shoot 4k video with the 1dx2. Which crops the the image about 40% I believe. So my 100mm macro lens is just too tight for alot of my subjects. It used to be fine using the full frame of a 5d, but this crop makes it tough for medium sized subjects.

Alot of people use the 60mm and 100mm for use with a cropped sensor. But I never had the ability to do that with a full frame. And would be nice to be able to have that flexiblity.

I have tried to use the 16-35mm F4L with a 1.4x teleconvertor. But the image quality isn't great. I use this for shooting underwater subjects so I have other possible limitations as well.

Interested to here what people suggest. Thanks in advance!

Another EOS 7D Mark III Wishlist Makes the Rounds, Along With Some Opinion [CR0]

HTML:
Another list of recycled specifications for the EOS 7D Mark III is making the rounds.</p>
<p><strong>Canon EOS 7D Mark III Rumoured Specifications:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>28mp Sensor (It was 30mp a few weeks ago) [<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/a-canon-eos-7d-mark-iii-specification-list-surfaces-cr0/">see here</a>]</li>
<li>4K video [<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/a-canon-dslr-rumor-roundup-heading-into-2018/">see here</a>]</li>
<li>More video oriented features [<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/a-canon-dslr-rumor-roundup-heading-into-2018/">see here</a>]</li>
<li>Tilt-able touchscreen (Likely a feature for pretty much every Canon DSLR going forward)</li>
<li>A higher end feature set when compared to other APS-C DSLRs from Canon [<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/a-canon-dslr-rumor-roundup-heading-into-2018/">see here</a>]</li>
<li>A “new generation” of APS-C sensors from Canon</li>
<li>Same introductory price as the EOS 7D Mark III</li>
</ul>
<p>I think we’ll be seeing a lot of these lists over the next couple of months, as Canon is going to be relatively quiet for the remainder of 2017. The PowerShot G1 X Mark III is coming and they have to start shipping the brand new tilt-shift lenses and the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS.</p>

<p>I personally don’t think Canon needs to up the resolution for the EOS 7D Mark III to make it attractive to buyers, but they could definitely improve dynamic range, image detail, autofocus performance, speed up frame rate, improve ISO performance and add the long overdue 4K video with C-Log for an APS-C camera.</p>
<p>I think things will start getting a little clearer as we get closer to CES in early 2018, while we don’t expect a DSLR to be announced for that show, we’ll likely see a a prosumer DSLR announcement some time in February of 2018.</p>
<p><em>thanks Ari</em></p>

5D MKIV - HELP ?! metering is overexposing & quick review with 16-35 F4 is

Hi, I finally got a mkIV after 5 years of my MkIII.
I’ll do a bit of a review at end of this post.

But first shoots with it , I’m very impressed. Much nicer files , not the smirry smudgey look of the mkIII.
And much less colour noise in shadows , possibly more luminance noise as iso goes up. But much better , and the resolution bump is decent.
Processing raw images in capture one , seems mor comparable to D800 or A7rii files, rather than 5d mkiiis.
Which is great.

One problem though is the meter seems to be giving me over exposure readings especially in evaluative mode.
- I shoot manual all the time , and am used to metering from different sections of a scene then working out the ‘correct’ exposure from my various readings of the scene.
It seems nearly 2 stops different from my mkIII meter..

Say I’m metering for dark areas in trees in shade or a dark road or stone building . - normally on my mkIII in evaluative I would set the exposure to 2 stops under .
Actually I’ve been using this technique for 20 years, and has worked well for me on various film and 5D series cameras.
If I do this , these dark areas are almost a stop over exposed. So I found I have to set exposure to 3-4 stops under the meter from dark areas.
Everything i meter for , and say it’s an average tone and constrast scene , it’ will be 1 stop over if go on the meters exposure.

I’ve tried center weighted and this seems similar to readings I was getting from my mkiii.
Partial seems very hot and miss .

Any thoughts ?
