Monkey selfie

The monkey took the pic and the camera owner (photographer) was sued for copyright infringement. The case was settled but the photographer spent so much on the defense he will end up at a big loss. So watch when monkeys use your camera for a selfie.

"Under the deal, the photographer whose camera was used to take the photos agreed to donate 25 percent of any future revenue from the images to charities dedicated to protecting crested macaques in Indonesia, lawyers for an animal-rights group said."

I hope Everone affected by Hurricane Irma is OK

I put this in the Underwater Category, since it seemed to fit.

I sincerely hope that those who were in the Path of Irma were able to avoid any injuries, and minimal losses. The flooding and storm surge is still ongoing, and with power and internet out, I expect that using cell phone data is better spent keeping track of the developing situation.

Stay safe, taking photos of the devastation is secondary.

Very happy with these two shots, especially the first. Tried something new, and bumped my ISO to 400. I usually don't dare go above 200 for fear of noise. I think these have acceptable levels while also exposing correctly for the background. Super excited to try these settings some more.

Shutter speed: 1/200

ROTOLIGHT Announce Strategic Collaboration with Elinchrom

HTML:
<em>Rotolight to enhance its product range with integrated Skyport Wireless Protocol</em></p>
<p><strong>Pinewood Studios, London, 31st August 2017:</strong> Rotolight, an award-winning British LED lighting manufacturer, has teamed up with Elinchrom one of the world’s best known photographic lighting systems manufacturers, to integrate its unique Skyport Protocol across its product range, starting with NEO 2 to be unveiled at a major launch event on September 4th.</p>
<p>Rotolight has collaborated with Elinchrom to integrate its Skyport 2.4Ghz high speed sync (HSS) wireless flash receiver into NEO 2, eliminating the need to purchase a standalone flash receiver, while also providing rock-solid reliability, range, flexibility and control for multiple off camera lighting setups. Skyport enables users to wirelessly control up to 10 lights, in four groups, at a distance of up to 200m(656ft) with the new Rotolight HSS transmitter (capable of 1/8000th), which has been optimised for Rotolight by Elinchrom. It is available on launch for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Panasonic camera systems (with Fuji to follow next year), and is compatible with all other Elinchrom Skyport devices.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><i>“Elinchrom Skyport represents the best in class wireless HSS triggering technology, and its combination with Rotolight’s pioneering LED product range, will provide creative imagemakers with a unique innovative feature set, and unrivalled consistency and reliability” said Rod Aaron Gammons, Managing Director of Rotolight.</i></p>
<p>Rotolight recently announced the world’s first continuous LED lights with HSS flash capability, providing a game changing product to photographers and filmmakers who want an all in one solution. Unlike traditional strobe/flash, AEOS and the upcoming NEO 2 have no recycle time, which ensures users never miss a shot, making them the perfect choice of light for today’s modern high-frame-rate-capable cameras.</p>
<p><i>“Rotolight is a highly innovative company, with a unique set of industry first products, and we were very excited to work with them when they approached us to integrate the Skyport technology into their product range. The integration is great for both companies, and for Rotolight’s customers, they gain a rock solid, ultra- reliable, state of the art, High Speed Sync wireless triggering technology” said Simon Whittle, CEO of Elinchrom.</i></p>

<p>Filmmakers will also enjoy the benefits of the Skyport integration, providing them with wireless remote control of colour temperature, brightness, and remote triggering of Rotolight’s CineSFX, an award-winning suite of customizable cinematic lighting effects, such as lightning, fire, gunshot, paparazzi and TV flicker to enhance video productions.</p>
<p><b>Simon Whittle, CEO of Elinchrom said:</b> <i>“Our ambition is for Skyport to become an industry standard technology, eliminating the need for expensive, proprietary trigger systems that prevents photographers from working with their lights of choice. We are extremely excited to be working with Rotolight, a disruptive innovator in the lighting industry with a unique set of industry first features. This collaboration between both companies will provide creative imagemakers with a state of the art solution that is uniquely versatile, whilst also being rock solid and consistent”.</i></p>

Bought used camera on ebay... funny smell

Just got a 5d4 in the mail from an ebay purchase. It was a good deal ($2650), but not so much so that I thought it fishy. My question is regarding an odd smell coming from the camera. It's perfumed, it seems, and it comes more strongly from internal compartments, like the memory card compartment and inside the battery door.

I suppose the fellow could have just been using a perfumed wipe or something to do some cleaning before sending. But I'm leery of an effort to hide a different smell, most of which would suggest exposure to water.

The camera mostly looks good and functions properly. He did say it had 200 clicks, but it actually has about 10,000.

Any sage advice?

Nijkon FF mirrorless - goodbye F-mount!

https://petapixel.com/2017/09/07/nikon-patents-2-full-frame-mirrorless-lenses-52mm-f0-9-36mm-f1-2/

yes, yes, yes - bring it on Nikon - so we will finally also see FF mirrorless system by Canon! :)

And yes, yes, yes - a new short-flange distance native mount for FF image circle unlike Canon with APS-C only EF-M mount and Sony with small E-mount causing major issues in FF lens design.

Nikon will be able to smoothly transition to only 1 totally UNCOMPROMISED mount for both FF and APS-C mirrorless cameras/systems ... rather than needing 2 different mounts. They are very late, but maybe they are smarter ...

CDLC: A Look Back on Totality

HTML:
Canon Explorer of Light Ken Sklute has put together an article about shooting the recent total solar eclipse for the Canon Digital Learning Center.</p>
<p><strong>From Ken Sklute:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>I finished setting up my arsenal of Canon goodies for the morning. I was using the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II along with the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS Extender 1.4x lens atop my ReallyRightStuff tripod. I chose the 200-400 just in case we were visited by overcast skies. If those pesky clouds did come to visit, I could zoom out to potentially make use of the clouds in my composition. We were lucky as only a few high cirrus clouds came by for about 30 minutes during the partial phases. They soon moved on, as the star of the show got ready to make an appearance.</p>

<p>I also had an AZ-EQ5 German Equatorial/Alt-Azimuth mount from Sky-Watcher, keeping my two EOS 5D Mark IVs tracking the sun as it moved, one with an EF 600mm f/4L IS lens and the other with the EF 400mm f/5.6L with a 1.4 converter on it, giving me a focal length of 560mm. <p>We’re being told that there will be more APS-C sized sensor PowerShot cameras coming and that the G1 X Mark III is first, and then we’ll get a G3 X Mark II and a G5 X Mark II. The source is not sure if the smaller G series PowerShot cameras like the G9 X and G7 X will move to APS-C.</p>

<p>There was no mention as to whether or not the new PowerShot cameras would get 4K recording, which is something we obviously get asked a lot. Our hunch on the topic? I think Canon has to add 4K to at least a few of the models.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/buyers-guide-category/powershot/">you can see on our buyer’s guide</a>, the upper end of the PowerShot G series lineup is starting to look quite long-in-the-tooth.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Canon CPS

I've been a Canon CPS member now for the last four years, with the two most recent years being a Platinum member. I am very pleased with the service and help I have received from the support staff and those who do the work on my cameras and lenses at the Newport News facility.

I had a bit of an accident last week with my 1Dx which would make almost anyone cringe as it fell from a strap and rolled down about 15 concrete stairs. Surprisingly, the outer body only had scuff marks in various spots. I shot about 150 pictures with it at the soccer game and it was shooting like nothing was wrong at all and then all of a sudden everything went dark. Every image, no matter what the settings were turned out dark. Off to CPS it went on Friday morning. I checked on it today and it was still not quite ready so I asked if they could send me out a loaner as I had high school football to shoot on Friday night and a college game on Saturday. I just wanted to make sure I had a camera in case mine never made it in time. No problem, it was shipped out this afternoon and I'll have it tomorrow morning. Very grateful for their support to say the least.

<p>“We really went back to the drawing board for this one,” said Peter Crithary, marketing manager, Sony Electronics. “It is our next-generation camera system, a ground-up development initiative encompassing a completely new image sensor. We carefully considered key aspects such as form factor, ergonomics, build quality, ease of use, a refined picture and painterly look—with a simple, established workflow. We worked in close collaboration with film industry professionals. We also considered the longer-term strategy by designing a user interchangeable sensor that is as quick and simple to swap as removing four screws, and can accommodate different shooting scenarios as the need arises.”</p>

<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Full frame sensor and wide range of lens </strong><strong>compatibility</strong></p>
<p>VENICE combines a newly developed 36x24mm Full Frame sensor to meet the high-quality demands of feature filmmaking. Full Frame offers the advantages of compatibility with a wide range of lenses, including Anamorphic, Super 35mm, Spherical and Full Frame PL mount lenses for a greater range of expressive freedom with shallow depth of field. The lens mount can also be changed to support E-mount lenses for shooting situations that require smaller, lighter, and wider lenses. User-selectable areas of the image sensor allow shooting in Super 35 mm 4 – perf. Future firmware upgrades are planned to allow the camera to handle 36mm wide 6K resolution. Fast image scan technology minimizes “Jello” effects.</p>
<p><strong>New color management system and established workflow for flexible post-production</strong></p>
<p>A new color management system with an ultra wide color gamut gives users more control and greater flexibility to work with images during grading and post-production. VENICE also has more than 15 stops of latitude to handle challenging lighting situations from low-light to harsh sunlight with a gentle roll-off handling of highlights.</p>
<p>VENICE achieves high quality and efficient file-based production through Sony’s established 16-bit RAW/X-OCN via the AXS-R7 recorder, and 10 bit XAVC workflows. VENICE is also compatible with current and upcoming hardware accessories for CineAlta cameras (DVF-EL200 Full HD OLED Viewfinder, AXS-R7 recorder, AXS-CR1 and high-speed Thunderbolt-enabled AXS-AR1 card reader, using established AXS and SxS memory card formats.</p>

Geared Tripod Head

I purchased a used Manfrotto 410 Tripod head from Chris Hejinar on ebay and used it for the eclipse. I've came to like it for still photography ... But

The springs in the control knobs of my geared head are not holding securely or springing back into place. Even when I manually twist them to the locked position, there is a lot of play, and the head can drop while I'm trying to adjust it.

I only paid $250 for it, and that included the $100 AS clamp modification, but I'm unhappy with the amount of play and weak springs.

I'm pretty good mechanically, but did not want to tear it down completely after reading that it was not repairable but new spring - knob assemblies were required. There is lots of bogus advice as well. I just sent a second request to Manfrotto for parts availability or repair availability, but am wondering if I should get a new one or even a 405 and sell the old one as-is. It works, but with my 100-400l + 2X TC + 5D MK IV, it is at or slightly beyond its capability to adjust smoothly.

Any recommendations for this combo? I'm not going to get the 700, that's overkill for me.

<p><strong>Today Logitech (SIX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI)</strong> announced CRAFT, an advanced keyboard with a creative input dial, setting a new standard for computer keyboards. CRAFT looks and feels better than anything you have typed on and offers a whole new way to immediately access context-specific computing tools with a smart aluminum dial. For example, with a touch, tap or turn you can adjust image brightness, contrast and saturation in Adobe Photoshop, or create and adjust charts in Microsoft Excel®. The creative input dial gives you the ultimate control and input at your desk for precision, efficiency and uninterrupted creative flow.</p>
<p>“Our new flagship Logitech CRAFT keyboard is for all creators who spend a lot of time designing and creating – who want to work with greater precision and feel connected to their work,” said Art O’Gnimh, global head of keyboards at Logitech. “The creative input dial gives you instant access to the functions you need, the moment you need them, allowing you to increase your productivity by simply touching the dial. CRAFT puts you in your creative element – every time you sit at the desk.”</p>
<p><!--more--></p>

<p>The touch-sensitive aluminum creative input dial, called the Crown, recognizes the apps you are using and gives instant access to the tools you need. With a slight touch of the Crown you can instantly access context-specific functions — like brush size, brightness, chart type, font size — tap to change the function and turn to change the selected function’s value. Installing custom profiles in Logitech Options™ Software maximizes the creative process when working with Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator CC, Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Adobe InDesign CC and Microsoft PowerPoint®, Excel® and Word® (Microsoft functionalities work on PC only at this time). The Crown brings comfort, immediacy and convenience to your creative process and allows for increased two-handed interactions. You can also have access to global controls – giving you the ability to change desktops, navigate between apps, or adjust volume – and assign one additional Crown function in each of your favorite apps.</p>
<p>CRAFT also features smart illumination with backlighting that detects your hands and adjusts lighting automatically depending on the room conditions. The keys are crafted for comfort, in a full-size familiar layout, with each individual key engineered for stability and precision. CRAFT looks great alongside other premium desktop accessories by Logitech, such as the Logitech MX Sound, Logitech Spotlight Presentation Remote and Logitech MX Master 2S.</p>
<p>Additionally with the touch of an Easy-Switch™ button, you can easily switch between – and type on – any three connected devices, whether you are using a Windows® PC or Mac®. Select from either a Logitech Unifying™ USB or Bluetooth® Low Energy technology to connect to your computer.</p>
<p><strong>Pricing and Availability</strong></p>
<p>The Logitech CRAFT Advanced Keyboard is expected to be available in October 2017 at Logitech.com and select retail stores for a suggested retail price of $199.99. For more information, please visit Logitech.com, our blog or connect with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.</p>
