Canon EOS 5DS R Mark II Talk [CR2]

HTML:
I’ll lead by saying that a replacement for the Canon EOS 5DS R will not be coming in 2017, this is potentially a Q3/Q4 2018 camera.</p>
<p>Anything this far out is generally considered unlikely to come to fruition, but there have been exceptions and specifications always evolve and change for camera bodies.</p>
<p><strong>This is what we’re told about the EOS 5DS / EOS 5DS R Replacement:</strong></p>

<ul>
<li>Working prototypes are currently being tested.</li>
<li>The “5DS” series will be amalgamated into a single camera.</li>
<li>No low pass filter.</li>
<li>All new 60.1mp image sensor.</li>
<li>A new type of low megapixel mode.</li>
<li>4K video (video features will be basic)</li>
<li>Identical body to the EOS 5D Mark IV.</li>
<li>Focus peaking present, may appear first on another DSLR.</li>
<li>Expect all the other features such as DPAF, Wifi, Touchscreen and GPS.</li>
</ul>
<p>We’ve heard other rumblings about a high megapixel replacement, and that these cameras won’t be on 5 year product cycles. I too expect to see this new camera some time in 2018.</p>
<p>*<strong>Update 09/04/2017 @ 16:56 EST: </strong>Keep in mind that Canon uses APS-H sensors in some test bodies and this can affect pixel count.</p>

86mm diameter macro flash

I'd like to start shooting macro again and purchase an EF version of the Sigma 180mm APO macro. Last time I used an A-mount version on my Sony A99 (both are sold a while ago :) ). I remember I couldn't find a macro flash for the Sigma due to the large filter thread diameter (86mm), and I'm wondering if things have changed since 2013?

GH5: Codec update and HLG

https://www.dpreview.com/news/9799125170/panasonic-issues-promised-gh5-firmware-update-with-a-host-of-unexpected-extras

Too many feature, don't understand all.

Panasonic GH5 now have HLG raw for UHD.

What HLG?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_Log-Gamma

HLG more like eye, less like computer. Not needed for raw, can change curve after. Can't change curve for 4:2:0/4:2:2 like raw.

AFMA on the 6D2

I finally got around to AFMA my 6D2, and the first thing that I noticed was that I could not find AFMA in the menu system. After a few seconds of "OMG! They can't have left this out", I found it! You have to go into the custom menu, scroll down through the various possibilities, and add AFMA into your custom menu.

Also, Riemann Focal does not support the 6D2 YET.... (they say that they are working on it) so you have to shoot in manual mode and use jogs....

With that figured out, all went well, and the job is now done forlorn but my longest lens, a 150-600, that requires me to do it outside....

Lensrentals.com Now Rents DJI Drones

<p>There are some extra rules when renting a drone, compared to renting a camera or a lens. <a href="http://www.pntrac.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fblog%2F2017%2F08%2Fwere-now-renting-drones-and-here-is-your-guide%2F">Lensrentals.com breaks this down in an important blog post</a>.</p>
<p><strong>How to Be Eligible for a Drone Rental</strong></p>

85mm f/1.2L II vs 85mm f/1.4L IS

Well, the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS is no longer a rumor.

I'm wondering: For those of you thinking about an 85mm portrait lens; will you choose the f/1.4L IS? Will you choose the old 85 f/1.2L II? Or will you wait and see whether or not an 85mm f/1.2L III is coming?

I know it has been said that the new f/1.4L is not a replacement for the f/1.2L, but I'm not sure I believe that. It may not be a direct replacement (because of the vastly differing specs), but that doesn't mean Canon won't quit making an 85mm in f/1.2.

Wondering how many of us might be torn about all this.

I've got a feeling that if a new 85mm f/1.2 does come out that the price is going to be really up there.

I'd like an 85mm portrait lens, but the new lens has certainly muddied the water for me.

Rental Camera Gear Destroyed by the Solar Eclipse of 2017

HTML:
Lensrentals.com has posted a great article about the damage done to rented camera gear that occurred during the 2017 solar eclipse in North America. They did figure they’d get some damaged gear back, and they did, but the type of damage may surprise some.</p>
<p>First up, wrecked sensors. This is something you’d expect, as lots of people didn’t heed the bevy of warnings about using eclipse filters. The second type of damage that surprised us was melted aperture blades in lenses. Also showing damage, was built-in ND filters on some video cameras. So if you’re paying attention, ND filters aren’t protection from the sun, that’s why they <a href="http://www.leefilters.com/index.php/camera-directory/camera-dir-list/category/solar-eclipse-filter">make special filters for that</a>.</p>

<p>Be sure to <a href="http://www.pjtra.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJGRk5HSklCRkpOSkVN?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lensrentals.com%2Fblog%2F2017%2F09%2Frental-camera-gear-destroyed-by-the-solar-eclipse-of-2017%2F">head over to Lensrentals.com to read the full article</a> and check out the images of dead gear.</p>
<p>For anyone that is going to rent some gear for the eclipses in the future, please pay attention to the safety warnings, as it will save you a lot of money in the end.</p>
<p><em>**Yes, we realize that the eclipse doesn’t do the damage, it’s the sun. However, people don’t tend to point their cameras directly at the regular old sun without the moon in front of it.</em></p>

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS | ART Review | Dustin

Good afternoon, my friends. I’ve just launched my review of the new Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 ART lens, and wanted to share linkage with you:

Written Review: http://bit.ly/2470ART
Video Review: http://bit.ly/2470ARTyt
Image Gallery: http://bit.ly/2470ARTig

Quick summary - as most of you now know, it isn't a razor sharp lens. It does have nice mechanical construction, however, and I actually really like the "look" of images out it. Don't write it off just because it isn't class leading in resolution.

Cinema EOS C200 Codec Update Coming in 2018

HTML:
According to Newsshooter, Canon will bring a new codec to the Cinema EOS C200 camera in early 2018 as a free “upgrade”.</p>
<p>The new codec will be XF-AVC YCbCr 4:2:0 8bit and will be recorded to the SD slot, and not the CFast 2.0 slot.</p>

<p>Most of the world likely wanted to see a 10bit 4:2:2 codec in the EOS C200, but Canon does have a history of not wanting to add features to a product you can already get in a higher end product, and in this case, that is the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II. Canon also said that they have no intention of adding an internal 10bit 4:2:2 codec to the EOS C200.</p>
<p>Be sure to <a href="http://www.newsshooter.com/2017/08/24/new-codec-coming-to-the-c200-in-2018-will-only-be-420-8-bit/">head over to Newsshooter</a> for some more in-depth analysis of this decision by Canon.</p>

Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

This was a lens I never intended buying, but while searching around for the best price on an M6 body the cheapest price I could get was a kit that included the 15-45mm. I can't see myself using it much and will probably give it to my daughter along with my old EOS M.

As a general walkaround lens I much prefer the EF-M 11-22mm or EF-M 18-55mm, which are faster, better constructed and better optically. The 15-45mm has a plastic lens mount and is obviously lower quality than the other EF-M lenses, but it is capable of giving some fairly pleasing results.

645 or Rokinon?

I use a xxD for macro and best focus, an M2 for travel and compactness, but I occasionally stick a roll of film into an old 620 to get shallower depth of field and interesting grains. I shot a few rolls on a Fuji GA645 which was fun, but a little wide angle. I'm trying to decide between a couple of options for mostly portraits, and maybe to blow up the occasional print to 16*20. For about the same price, I could get an old Pentax 645 and 150 3.5 manual focus lens, or a Rokinon 50 1.2 lens for the M. It would cost over 2ce the Rokinon lens to have autofocus on the medium format. I'm wondering if anyone has played with both, I can see differences as well as similarities. Both are manual focus, but with digital I can take 5 shots to nail focus on one, each shot is precious, well, about 1.40 to develop and scan per shot. Medium format should enlarge much better, but the resolution of scans at the larger developers is the same as current APS-C sensors, though maybe those are better pixels. I could develop myself, but I don't want to. Sometimes I like film grain. the Rokinon will be much smaller, so it will probably get used more. The depth of field and field of view should be similar, 150 3.5 is similar to 57mm 1.3 on APS-C. What do experience have you had in medium format vs finding very fast lenses for smaller sensors?

Review: Canon EOS Rebel SL2

HTML:

<iframe width="728" height="409" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/j631je5VBhY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<p>The Camera Store has completed their video review of the brand new Canon EOS Rebel SL2. This camera was a bit of an afterthought when it was announced alongside the highly anticipated Canon EOS 6D Mark II.</p>
<p>I loved the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 and I’ve been enjoying using the EOS Rebel SL2. I like how Jordan at TCSTV described the EOS Rebel SL2 when he said, “I almost consider this camera, a mirrorless camera that has this optical viewfinder tacked on top of it.”. I think that’s a perfect way to put the EOS Rebel SL2.</p>
<p>The biggest upgrade over the SL1 has to be the addition of DPAF, as I have personally already felt the benefit as I’m using the OVF a lot less on the SL2 than I did on its predecessor.</p>

Canon Adding New Camera Plant as Production Returns to Japan

HTML:
<em>Automation makes manufacturing at home more competitive</em></p>
<p><strong>TOKYO</strong> — Canon plans to have a new camera plant in Japan up and running by 2019 as it moves more production back home, relying on factory automation to lower the cost of domestic operations.</p>
<p>The Japanese electronics maker will acquire 300,000 sq. meters of land for a digital camera factory in southern Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture as early as September. The plant will be Canon’s first new camera factory in this country since 2010, and will feature labor-saving assembly lines of the sort Canon is installing across its Japanese facilities to make domestic production cost-competitive. Total costs are projected to be around 20 billion yen ($181 million).</p>

<p>The facility will take over production of single-lens reflex cameras formerly manufactured at another Miyazaki plant. Canon will eventually consider bringing production of some compact digital cameras now made overseas back to Japan as well. The company produced 56% of its cameras and other offerings in this country in the year 2016, and plans to raise that figure to 60%. <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Canon-adding-new-camera-plant-as-production-returns-to-Japan">Read the full story</a></p>

Downgrade pro lenses

Bonjour ! (i'm french photographer)

Here's a little story about my gear (on full frame body):

I am thinking about a new way to take pictures. A way about emotions, lights and frames only. I just dont want to look at sharpness or other MTF charts because i really don't care.
I'm tired of taking care of my gear. I want to have my dslr in my bag everytime. I don't want to leave my big L lenses in my house because i'm too scary to scratch it.

So i'm thinking to change my lenses, to downgrade from pro lenses to entry level lenses.

By this way, i could have my dslr always with me, just at te bottom of my backpack or on my hip in the street. And never mind if it scratch or fall, or whatever, i just want to use it.

So i started to change:
24-105 L to the little 24-85 for travel lens
35 L to the little 35 f/2 (first one) for lifestyle and every day lens

The OM-D E-M10 Mark III includes best-in-class image stabilization compensation performance and the same TruePic VIII Image Processor used in Olympus’ acclaimed flagship OM-D E-M1 Mark II camera. <p><!--more--></p>
<p>The camera is compact and lightweight to easily be taken anywhere to capture and share standout, like-worthy images on social media. Designed for ease of use, both in form and functionality, the grip rests nicely in the hand, and buttons and dials are thoughtfully positioned for effortless operation. <p>First-time interchangeable lens camera users benefit from four shooting assist modes to capture brilliant images right out of the box. The intelligent AUTO Mode detects the shooting scene, subject, camera movement and light transmitted through the lens, then automatically chooses the optimal settings. The other assist modes include Scene Mode (SCN), Advanced Photo Mode (AP), and Art Filter Mode (ART), each of which appear on the mode dial alongside AUTO Mode for easy access.</p>
<p>The Touch AF shutter, which now takes advantage of 121 autofocus points, allows users to choose the precise area of focus and trip the shutter simply by touching the LCD screen. Continuous AF (C-AF) Mode maintains focus on moving subjects when the shutter is pressed halfway.</p>
<p>The OM-D E-M10 Mark III is equipped with built-in Wi-Fi®, which can be used in conjunction with the Olympus Image Share (OI.Share®) app to easily connect to a smart device and wirelessly transfer images for quick editing and uploading to social media.</p>

5d3 issues/canon repair info

My 5d3 has started having issues. At first I thought it was a lexar memory card. After a shoot I got home to empty out the card and when I put it in the card ready of the computer it wouldn't read. Long story short I found out when I put it in my camera the camera wouldn't turn on.
So I assumed it was a card failure.
However now unless I pull my battery out of my camera after periods of non use it won't turn on. Even that doesn't always fix it. Sometimes I have to play with it for a while before it starts working.
Anyone experienced this or have any suggestions?
I have a wedding on the 24th and so I am deciding if this needs to be sent to canon for repair immediately or will it not be back in enough time?
Thanks for any help in advance.

SL2

I bought a old Sigma 600mm Mirror lens today from a Craigslist seller for $75 and mounted it to my SL2 just to see how bad the images were with a high MP body. First I tried hand holding at 1000 sec. No Go, blurry images. So I drug out my big heavy tripod with geared head and put it on my back porch. The top of Mt Spokane was totally hidden by smoke, so I focused on my garden a few hundred feet away.

I did not expect much, and I was rewarded. The wind was blowing enough to make it difficult. At ISO 2000, the sensor noise was starkly apparent, so I dropped the shutter speed down to 1/125. Slight blurring looked better than noise or the image with NR.

For a manual lens, I set it to Tv with auto ISO and -2/3 stop correction.

This made the image come out at 1/125 sec ISO 100. The lens is fixed at f/8. Sounds like the old rule of 8 eh.

I really liked the swivel LCD, I could touch the spot I wanted to view at 1X, 5X or 10X and manually focus on that spot. I should have set a shutter delay, but with the wind blowing, it likely did not matter.

In any event, here it is. I did adjust lighting, sharpness, etc of the image to my taste. The focus was on the corn silk. It actually looked better than I expected, the old lens is certainly not up to the digital age, but I could not argue with the price.

I was surprised by the shallow depth of field
