Canon 70D vs M5

I currently have a 70D but i am almost set to get the M5 in the very near future. I know the upgrade is not significant and i'll actually lose a somewhat useful feature: setting the max shutter speed for auto ISO, but reducing the weight of my kit from the 70D+15-85 to an M5+15-45 is, IMO, a huge advantage (other lenses would remain the same, like the 55-250 STM+adapter of course) for hiking and generally being able to have the camera anywhere with me.

Although i haven't seen a good comparison between the 2 cameras (it's only compared with the 80D) i have seen a side by side feature list with advantages and disadvantages of each system and one advantage of the 70D over the M5 was weather sealing.

Now...my first DSLR was a Canon 1000D (rebel XS) which was absolutely not marketed as being weather sealed. I was once caught in a pouring rain with the camera in a basic shoulder bag and when i took it out it was wet...not swimming in water in the bag but very much wet that i used a few paper towels to get the camera dry again...had no problem whatsoever and continued using it.

The 70D has never been in such a situation but i got caught with it in the occasional rain..nothing serious though...

My main question here: would an M5 have problems in situations like described above? My belief is that it would be completely fine with a few water drops now and then..

Also another point is that i can still get a good value for my 70D+18-55 (i'm not parting with the 15-85!) so i could end up not spending that much for the M5..

Any other opinions on the 2 cameras? please share :)

Off Brand: Leica Announces the TL2 Mirrorless Camera

HTML:
<p>Based on the Leica TL-System, which has been continuously advanced in terms of speed, ease of handling and flexibility since its market launch, the new Leica TL2 embraces all the perfected features and leads the innovative camera concept into a new generation with additional innovations and new design aspects. The particular hallmark of the Leica TL2 is the unusual design of its compact body. Each camera body is precisely machined from a single block of aluminium in the Leica factory. The use of premium materials and their engineering in an elaborate manufacturing process are unique in the history of camera construction and lend the Leica TL2 an unmistakeable look, feel and solidity.</p>
<p><strong>Brilliant still pictures and video footage</strong></p>
<p>The Leica TL2 is equipped with a newly developed, 24-megapixel CMOS sensor in APS-C format that, in combination with an equally new, Maestro II series high-performance image processor, guarantees outstanding picture quality with impressive dynamic range, excellent contrast and colour rendition, exceptional sharpness and finest resolution of details. However, the Leica TL2 impresses not only with its still picture performance, but also with its video capabilities. The camera’s various video recording modes, such as 4K (3840 x 2160p at 30 frames per second), full HD (1920 x 1080p at 60 frames per second), HD (1280 x 720p at 60 frames per second or slow motion [SLOMO] captured at 120 frames per second), leave absolutely nothing to be desired.</p>
<p><strong>Fast and almost silent</strong></p>
<p>One of the highlights of the Leica TL2 is its enormously improved AF speed and precision. For instance, the camera focuses sharply on subjects in around only 165 milliseconds (CIPA standard; Leica standard zoom lens at its wide-angle setting), and thus focuses up to three times faster than the previous model. The new Leica Maestro II series image processor not only plays a significant role in its faster autofocus, but also to the considerably shorter start-up time. Another new development is an electronically controlled shutter that enables silent exposures at shutter speeds up to 1/40,000 s and an increase in the continuous shooting rate from 7 to a maximum of 20 frames per second.</p>
<p><strong>Connectivity with and without a cable</strong></p>
<p>Thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi module of the Leica TL2 and the function for setting up a mobile hotspot, pictures and video can be conveniently transferred by wireless to smartphones, tablets and desktop PCs from anywhere and then, for example, be shared by email, on Facebook, Instagram or other social media. Data can also be transferred lightning fast by cable with the camera’s integrated HDMI and USB 3.0 ports. The USB port also enables recharging of the Leica TL2 without a battery charger – for example from a laptop computer or an external power bank.</p>
<p>With the TL App available for both iOS and Android devices, smartphones or tablets are transformed into electronic viewfinders and offer remote control of various exposure-relevant parameters such as the shutter speed and aperture. The TL App also makes it much easier to capture photos and video from unusual angles, with a self-timer or with longer shutter speeds.</p>
<p><strong>Modern, intuitive and versatile</strong></p>
<p>By grouping menu items according to related functions, the menu of the Leica TL2 is now more clearly and logically structured and makes camera handling easier and even more intuitive than before. With the MyCamera menu, the user interface can be further personalised to meet the photographer’s preferences or particular needs. This means that the photographer always has fast access to all frequently used features and presets. Thanks to significantly increased reactivity and up to eight times faster response when using the touchscreen, camera handling is now even more efficient and intuitive. At the heart of this is a bright and clearly laid-out 3.7″ LCD touchscreen display that enables both composition and reliable and convenient assessment of subjects before and after exposure. The only other controls are four ergonomically positioned haptic control elements that are intuitive in their operation. This ensures that camera users can concentrate fully on composing their pictures – without any unnecessary distractions.</p>
<p><strong>The best in its class</strong></p>
<p>The comprehensive portfolio of lenses in the Leica TL-System offers an ideal range of focal lengths for all situations and types of photography. The system currently comprises six lenses – three prime lenses and three zooms – that meet the needs of every photographic situation. The two fast prime lenses, the Leica Summicron-TL 23 mm f/2 ASPH. and the Summilux-TL 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH., are classic focal lengths for reportage photography, and the APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60 mm f/2.8 ASPH. complements them ideally as a lens for finely detailed close-up photography. The three compact zoom lenses, the Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-TL 11–23 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH., Vario-Elmar-TL 18–56 mm f/3.5–5.6 ASPH. and APO-Vario-Elmar-TL 55–135 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH., cover an entire range of focal lengths equivalent to 17 to 200 mm (equiv. in 35 mm format) and deliver exposures with rich contrast from corner to corner of each frame.</p>
<p>All Leica TL-Lenses impress with exceptional imaging performance at all distances from closest focusing distance to infinity and deliver pictures with the inimitable ‘Leica look’ and unique bokeh. Developed by optical design specialists in Wetzlar (Germany), they offer the exceptional imaging performance for which Leica lenses are famed. The combination of optical and precision engineering expertise and the use of finest materials in their construction ensures their constant quality and reliability in use.</p>
<p><strong>Sustainability guaranteed by cross-system compatibility</strong></p>

<p>Thanks to the L-Bayonet mount shared by the Leica TL and SL cameras, SL-Lenses can also be used without an adapter on the Leica TL2. With this, Leica once again carries forward its fundamental principles of cross-system compatibility and sustainability, which is now also reflected in a uniform product designation. Dedicated adapters are available for using Leica M and R lenses on TL-Cameras – the Leica M-Adapter is available in a choice of black or silver finish.</p>
<p><strong>New design in two colour options</strong></p>
<p>The Leica TL2 will be offered in a choice of two different colours from the start. The design of both the silver and black versions of the camera has been slightly revised in comparison with its predecessor. In addition to chamfered edges the body also features redesigned control elements that have been modified not only in visual style, but also provide a new haptic experience.</p>
<p>Functional camera accessories, such as high-quality protectors in Nappa leather, which can stay on the camera when changing the battery, and colour-coordinated carrying straps in stone-grey, black, red, yellow and cemento, are ideal complements to the TL system portfolio.</p>

What in camera options are honored by third party softwar

So I know I can get close to an unmolested or pre processed RAW file from my camera, but going through the menus of a new model there are a lot of options available so I wondered who used which ones and if any post processing programs honor any of those options specifically for RAW files. I have no interest in how any of these settings impact jpeg files.

For instance I know HTP has been shown to write to the RAW information and 'limits' the ISO range because of the way it works. Basically it underexposes by one stop and lifts that exposed by one stop to protect the highlights.

But we now have:-
1: Auto Light Optimizer.
2: Long Exposure Noise Reduction.
3: High ISO speed noise reduction.
4: Highlight Tone Priority.
5: Lens aberration correction:
A: Peripheral illumination correction.
B: Chromatic aberration correction
C: Distortion correction.
D: Diffraction correction.

Does anybody shooting RAW and not using a DPP workflow use only of these settings?

5DSr successor

Now that we have the "next-Gen" sensors on a rebel, 6D2, 5D4, M5 and looks like a 7D2, I wonder on how long
it will be before the 5DSr gets an upgrade?

I remember a year or so ago CR Guy indicated that they got info about a faster-than-usual upgrade to the DSr.

I hope they do this. When the 5D4 came out I really debated about whether to get it or upgrade my 5D3 to the DSr not only for the resolution but also better handling of shadow noise.

I ended up getting the 5D4, expecting a nice but minor improvement from the 5D3. It actually is a lot better and I have had to do a lot less exposure blending etc in high DR landscape settings. I am jealous of the tilt/flip screen on the 6D2, but I need the durability, sealing etc of the 5D4 and I want all the resolution the 5D4 brings.

So I am glad I went with the next gen, as it IMHO it is quite a bit better for what I do.

Having said that, file size is bigger etc so I hope that if they do upgrade the DSr, they keep the resolution around 50MP or so. If the same level of improvement I saw when going from 5D3 to 5d4 happens, you will have an awesome camera with still very high resolution.

I think 120 Mp files would make this a camera that a lot of people would theoretically want, but just not buy due to the fact that at that point, speed and storage become real issues. For some pros it would be great, but with the IQ you get in the 5D4 and 6D2 a lot of us would likely stick to those.

What gear for Airtattoo air show?

I'm going to Airtattoo air show next weekend: http://www.airtattoo.com/
It is my first air show ever so I have no idea what gear I should use. There will be both static and flying display.

I have 6D. The longest lens I have is 70-300 L IS. I expect that it will not be long enough for flying display. For static display I can go pretty wide - 16-35 L IS or 17 and 24 TS-E lenses. Is that too wide? Is 24-70 enough?

What would you recommend for flying display? I initially wanted to rent Sigma 150-600 Sport but it was already gone (I haven't found Contemporary option for rental in UK) - there is F1 Silverstone Grand Prix same weekend so most rental options are already gone.

I'm currently considering one of these options:
  • Rent Canon 100-400 L IS Mk.II but I'm not sure if that is really that much benefit over 70-300 L IS.
  • Rent 80D or 7D Mk.II and use it with 70-300 L IS while using 24-70 or 70-200 on 6D
  • Buy Sigma 150-600 OS Contemporary - I don't like the weight of Sport model and I have mixed experience with my Tamron 24-70 lens

There is in theory option to buy Canon 100-400 L IS Mk.II - I considered so many times to buy it and sell my 70-300 but I always turned that down. I like my 70-300 and its compact size for my more common photo trips (landscape, architecture, cities) and I feel that in case where I want something longer (mostly Zoos and sometimes birds in garden), 400mm is not enough anyway.

It is of course questionable how well will last minute rental work. Mentioned options are still available. I will also have to rent for at least 4 days because I can't collect it on Friday and return on Monday.

What is the actual time between the pre-flash and the exposure flash?

Odd question...

I found an insect. I believe it's a soldier bug. Whenever I attempted to take a picture of it, it would anticipate the flash and jump up before the exposure would happen. I'd have a picture of an empty leaf. It happened a couple dozen times.

Thinking the E-TTL pre-flash might be tipping him off, I moved the flash to manual and was able to photograph him. Put it back on E-TTL, and he'd hop up, just over where I'd framed him, and land right back down on the leaf. I photographed a couple dozen other species that day as well, and a few more dozen in days past, and none of them exhibited this behavior.

I'm curious where I might find what the time in picoseconds/milliseconds/etc. is between the little pre-flashes used for calculating exposure versus the actual exposure flash. A pretty extensive Google search turned up nothing. I'd like to be able to calculate what this bug's reaction time would be.

Thanks for any help. -tig

Uncle Rog looks into the high resolution future

(wasn't sure what forum to tuck this in)

Roger Cicala, on absurdly demanding optical testing and how today's glass might fare on 150 MP bodies someday:

https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/07/experiments-for-ultra-high-resolution-camera-sensors/

"First, let me emphasize again that if we had a 150-megapixel camera and shot today’s lenses on it, the images would have more detail than that same lens on your current 36-megapixel camera. How much more? It’s hard to say. But remember you have to roughly quadruple megapixels to double resolution. If you’re shooting a 36-megapixel camera, then a 150-megapixel camera would about double your potential resolution. You’d notice the difference, especially if you crop the hell out of an image or print billboards or something.

This test is looking at it from the other perspective; If you had this camera and wanted to see the finest detail possible, which lens would let you do that? Well, it’s borderline, but there are at least a few that seem reasonable choices. None of them do it at f/1.4 or even f/2, and none do it in the corners, but there are some that do it."

As always from Roger, a good read. Give it a look?

Canon Stock Price Drops to More Than Two-Month Low After EU Threatens Huge Fine

HTML:
<em>Canon fined for not including 4K on the EOS 6D Mark II? </sarcasm></em></p>
<p><strong>From Reuters:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Canon Inc’s stock fell to its lowest levels in more than two months on Friday after EU regulators said they may fine it up to 10 percent of annual revenue for jumping the gun in its acquisition of Toshiba Corp’s medical unit.</p>
<p>The EU Commission said it had reached a preliminary view that Canon breached rules by using a so-called “warehousing” two-step transaction structure involving an interim buyer to buy the company prior to obtaining relevant approvals.</p>

<p>Ten percent of Canon’s annual revenue would be roughly equivalent to $2.9 billion.</p>
<p>The $6 billion deal, completed late last year, raised eyebrows at the time due to the unorthodox method which allowed Toshiba, which was struggling for cash after an accounting scandal, to book proceeds in time for the financial year-end in March.</p>
<p>Rival bidder Fujifilm Holdings Corp had criticized it as a “mockery of the law”. <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-eu-antitrust-canon-idUSKBN19S09J">Read the full story</a></p></blockquote>

5D Mark 4 battery drain and meter timeout?

Hi to all, quick question for the collective on here, got my 5D4 out the bag this afternoon after firing off a few shots early in the morning with two fresh batteries installed in the grip only to find it was red HOT and both batteries fully discharged, it would seem checking the images a shot was fired and I'm guessing the meter continued to run until it was flat after I zipped up the bag, I tested the theory quickly in that the meter does run on after the one min timeout that is pre set in the standby menu and the 8 sec meter timer menu when the shutter or back button focus is half pressed, I don't recall if the Mk3 timer runs the whole time the shutter or BBF buttons is half pressed past the timeout or if it shuts off and waits for you to release the button first, my Mk3 is boxed up ready to sell so can't test it to see if it does the same, however I have never known any Canon body be red hot after being left in the bag with a button or two perhaps squashed against the bag liner? I would hope that Canon see such an oversight as a possible error, I.e why would the meter run for so long past the timeouts in an error state like this? Or am I just being slack by not turning it fully off, but then it's easy to just throw the camera back in the bag or under a coat and forget to turn it fully off each time, I also wonder if it could get hot enough to present a fire hazard? Makes you wonder....given mine was TOAST!

Canon EOS 7D Mark III Coming First Half of 2018 [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that Canon plans to announced the successor to the EOS 7D Mark II some time in the first half of 2018. The CP+ trade show in February is a logical possibility, although not guaranteed as I’d expect the EOS 90D to come for that show.</p>
<p>The EOS 7D Mark II was announced ahead of Photokina in 2014, which is where we expected a follow-up to be announced in 2018.</p>

<p>While we have no specifications, we are told that the EOS 7D Mark III will come with a few more video bells and whistles, like 4K recording, which at the time of writing this would be the first APS-C Canon camera to have this feature.</p>
<p>My gut says we’ll see an EOS 90D announced before the EOS 7D Mark III, so the “first half of 2018” could mean late Q2.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

This is everything that's wrong with photogaphic kickstarters

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/126995799/the-worlds-first-fastest-and-coolest-always-in-foc/description

Who wants to pay $200+ for a 35mm lens that's permanently set to f8 and infinity focus?

Apparently some people will when it's marketed as cool and innovative.

I don't even know what else to say. It's nothing more than a trick to prey on people that don't realize they can do the same thing by setting any normal 35mm lens to f8 and infinity focus, and also have almost everything be "magically" in focus all the time.

WANDRD is now in the duffel business

I love my WANDRD 'mixed use' photo backpack (I have the PRVKE 21).

Now they've jumped into the mixed use duffel biz:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wandrd/the-hexad-duffel-the-ultimate-carryall-and-travel

Looks like the PRVKE 21's removable photo cube + side camera hatch ideas got wicked into a duffel that can wielded like a duffel or worn like a (big) backpack.

See video at Kickstarter, the photo elements are somewhat downplayed -- this is more of a general bag than a dedicated camera bag -- but you can see the photo insert and side hatch implementation around 3:16 - 3:35.

I am not in the market for this form factor of bag, but you might be. Check it out?

- A

P.S. Sorry to sound so bullish on WANDRD, but I really dig my PRVKE 21. I imagine this bag will be equally well built / thoughtful to use.

<p><strong>CR’s Take:</strong> <em>I definitely agree with the outcome here. The added cross-type AF points is going to make the camera much more enjoyable to use over the original EOS 6D, which is my main DSLR.</em></p>

<p><strong>CR’s Take:</strong> <em>I voted for the AF point spread, it does look a bit tight, though I’m sure it won’t be much of an issue once I get used to the camera. The lack of 4K recording does seem to bug a lot of people. I’m not one of them, but I do understand the frustration.</em></p>
<h5>Will you be buying the Canon EOS 6D Mark II?</h5>

<p><strong>CR’s Take:</strong> <em>I’ve preordered the camera, I don’t doubt it’ll be a great performer and be a very worthy upgrade over the EOS 6D. I like daily shooting with cameras that don’t cost a ton and if it gets stolen or broken, I’ll survive.</em></p>
