What's next in 300-500mm primes and zooms?

Anything? I don't like TC's or zooms, and I haven't found anything over 200mm that is appealing and affordable. There are fans of the Canon 100-400 II, the 150-600's, The Sigma 120-300. But not me - I want a 300 or 400 or 500mm prime, or an internally-focusing zoom (longer than 200mm).

I note that Sigma is (kind of) trending longer. Is it unreasonable to expect Sigma to upgrade their 300 2.8 and 120-300 2.8 soon? I doubt that those would cannibalize their new 100-400 or the current 150-600's...

I wonder whether this topic will energize the '.... is doomed!' crowd.

Patent: Canon 18-105mm f/4-5.6 With Built-in Telconverter, But With a Twist.

HTML:
Here’s a patent we missed that appeared in Japan and was reported by <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-ef-lenses-rumours-and-news/">Northlight Images</a>. This is a 18-105mm f/4-5.6 With Built-in Telconverter, which isn’t a big departure, expect that the TC is to make the wide angle, wider!</p>
<p>At 18mm, the lens is f/4, but with the TC engaged, the lens becomes a 15mm f/3.3.</p>
<p><strong>Normal use</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Focal length 18.40 37.44 104.0</li>
<li>Aperture 4.00 4.64 5.89</li>
<li>Half angle of view ω (degree) 36.59 20.04 7.48</li>
<li>Image height 13.66 13.66 13.66 (APS-C)</li>
<li>Lens total length 149.30 165.77 191.31</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Wide-angle TC added</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Focal length 15.40</li>
<li>Aperture 3.35</li>
<li>Half angle of view ω (degree) 41.57</li>
<li>Image height 13.66</li>
<li>Lens total length 149.30</li>
</ul>
<p>This is definitely an interesting concept and it’s likely we’re going to see some pretty innovating lens designs from Canon in the future.</p>

Patent: EF-S 30mm f/1.8 & EF 50mm f/1.8

HTML:
A Canon patent was found over at <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-ef-lenses-rumours-and-news/">Northlight Images</a> for a 50mm/1.8, which was replaced relatively recently, and a APS-C 30mm/1.8 lens has appeared at the Japanese patent office (No. 2017-102352 )</p>
<p><strong>Full frame lens specifications:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Focal length 51.60mm</li>
<li>F number 1.85</li>
<li>Field angle 22.75</li>
<li>Image Height 21.64mm</li>
<li>Lens total length 84.19mm</li>
<li>BF 39.08mm</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>APS-C lens specifications:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Focal length 30.90mm</li>
<li>F number 1.85</li>
<li>Field angle 23.85mm</li>
<li>Image height 13.66mm</li>
<li>Lens total length 84.50mm</li>
<li>BF 35.50mm</li>
</ul>
<p>There has always been rumbings about a “good” EF-S prime coming and 30mm has been passed around over the years, however nothing has every come of it.</p>
<p>The EF-S 35mm f/2.8 IS STM Macro hasn’t started shipping yet, while a very neat looking lens, it’s not exactly the “fast” prime people have been looking for from Canon for APS-C shooters.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-ef-lenses-rumours-and-news/">Northlight Images</a> does say that they’ve been told to expect a “good” EF-S prime in the future.</p>

Sigma 100-400mm quick test

I recently reported a quick comparison of the Sigma 100-400mm on my 5DSR with shots of a nearby flagpole. The results weren't quite as good as my Canon 100-400mm II. My local dealer got in another copy today and lent it to me for more extensive testing as I had a view to buying. I took shots of my favourite chart and compared it with my 100-400mm II and also my Sigma 150-600mm C on my 5DSR. Here are 100% crops from the centre at 10.5m distance. The Sigma (top) is not as good as its big brother at 400mm (bottom) or the Canon (middle).

Case of the Jiggly IS (resolved!)

(Quick disclosure: I contacted Canon tech support, they got out the same body and lens, used my settings, and saw NO jiggling. Right away the tech said, "You've got a problem with the IS motor." So, I know it's not normal or a characteristic of the "new" IS in the new 24-105mm!)

Has anybody ever had a lens with a jiggly IS?

(I'm having some horrendous luck trying to get my hands on a fully functional ef 24-105mm f/4 IS II. The latest one was very sharp and had accurate AF (unlike the previous one sent back because it was super soft and had so much CA it was like a multiple exposure in overcast light).)

Unfortunately, with the latest one, with the camera body held diagonally (you don't have to ask why it got in that position if you chase toddlers with your camera), the IS would jiggle like Jello before settling down. It did not have the typical snappy, tiny jerk before "locking" in; it would engage and the whole frame would jiggle for a moment longer than IS normally takes to engage. Worked fine in landscape or portrait orientation, but worrisome jiggling diagonally.

This was actually my THIRD try to get the 24-105mm, but the first reject had nothing to do with Canon--only with UPS, which attempted to deliver a badly crushed carton. (Fortunately they needed a signature and I was home and refused the delivery.) Then the one that had to be out of spec with sharpness and CA, and now this one that is much sharper than expected (after reading reviews) but with the bad IS.

Btw, serial number was 53xxx..., and the firmware is now up to version 2.0.0.

So, any other bizarre IS behavior recently?

Lens dilemma... help! :)

After abandoning Canon a couple of years ago, I'm back. I missed it. :-[
I recently got a 5D IV with 100-400 L II and TC 1.4x. I already owned the 50L which I love.
I'm trying to decide if it would make sense to add a fast prime to my kit like 35 1.4 II L or sell the 50mm, while getting 16-35 F4L and 24-70 2.8 L.
Would I miss the 50L with the 24-70? I don't shoot very often at 1.2/1.4

thank you for any advice!

Canon EOS M20 Coming in July? [CR1]

HTML:
There is a report that the follow-up to the Canon EOS M10 will be coming on July 20 alongside the EOS 6D Mark II and EOS Rebel SL2. Again, we cannot confirm this and this is the first time we’ve heard about the EOS M20.</p>
<p>The M10 was announced back in October of 2015, so a replacement is highly probable. We’d expect an incremental update to the latest image sensor and DIGIC 7.</p>
<p>More to come once we confirm it.</p>

EF-M 28mm f3.5 IS USM a unique lens on the market - exclusively for EOS-M!

The Canon EOS-M System was in a kind of try and error phase for a pretty long time. No competitive bodies and very little amount of glass. The situation had completely changed for the bodies with the wonderful EOS M5 which I reviewed a couple of month ago. But what´s about the glass? So far just 2 prime lenses from Canon. There is one very interesting lens out which I got with the camera (ok, 2 or 3 days later...) And this is the EF-M 28mm f 3.5 IS USM...Mainly there are 2 features:
  • The build in LED-Ilumination
  • The 1.2 magnification (so called Super Macro)
The lens is pretty new - released in May 2016. There is no other comparable lens with build in illumination on the market (not for general photography - it is a feature which is common in microscopy...). The only one which comes close it the EF-S 35mm f2.8 Macro IS STM - but this is a 35mm and has a maximum magnification of 1...

Verdict
This little lens is worth every cent I payed for it. I do love it, especially for product photos and flowers. For those who want to have just one lens: this lens is an option. In terms of versatility hard to beat. Bit it comes with a slow aperture - which is a bit sad...Another strong point: it is the cheapest macro lens Canon is offering today. @ 300€ it is priced pretty reasonable - especially in comparison for the quality the lens delivers.

I do strongly recommend this lens! It is another strong argument for the EOS-M Camera line up!

Canon U.S.A. Unveils New “Canon See Impossible” Videos

HTML:
<em>Two New Videos, “See Beyond Darkness” and “See the Light” Highlight Rare Biofluorescent Turtles, Bioluminescent Creatures Under the Sea, the Aurora Borealis and More</em></p>
<p><b>MELVILLE, N.Y., June 5, 2017</b> – Expanding viewers’ horizons through technology, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is pushing its creative boundaries with two new “Canon See Impossible” videos that celebrate Canon’s commitment to making the seemingly impossible <i>possible</i>. Available for viewing now on the <a href="https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/explore/see-impossible" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Canon U.S.A.website</strong></a>, these two new videos – “See Beyond Darkness” and “See the Light” – showcase the capabilities of Canon imaging technology which enables researchers, professional photographers, cinematographers and enthusiasts to shoot impactful clear and crisp imagery, even when masked in darkness due to extremely low-light conditions.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><a href="https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/explore/see-impossible/create/see-beyond-darkness"><b>“See Beyond Darkness”</b></a></p>
<p>In “See Beyond Darkness,” the impossible assignment for Director of Photography Andy Casagrande was to record images of a rare biofluorescent turtle found only in the remote, unspoiled reefs of the Solomon Islands. The low-light capabilities of Canon’s ME20F-SH Multipurpose Camera and EOS-1D X DSLR camera enabled researchers to capture vivid images without disturbing the natural environment.</p>
<p>“To have Canon step in and facilitate an expedition like “See Beyond Darkness” is incredible. It’s the perfect marriage of cinema and science,” said Casagrande. “When you pair those two together, the opportunities are endless. You can inspire the world to care about the planet.”</p>
<p>“This technology allows us to see things that are beyond human perception. We’re seeing creatures and coral and turtles that we never knew existed,” said Klaus Obermeyer, Director of “See Beyond Darkness.” “We always knew the underwater world is something mysterious, but when you’re taking a camera in that can see in the dark, it’s truly, truly a rare opportunity.”</p>
<p><a href="https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/explore/see-impossible/create/see-the-light"><b>“See The Light”</b></a></p>
<p>In “See the Light,” Canon’s technology captured the beauty of bioluminescent creatures under the sea, the grandeur of the extremely difficult-to-photograph Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), and the wonder of the earth from far above it.</p>
<p>Each video cinematically illustrates Canon’s dedication to developing leading-edge technology that can provide creative thinkers the tools needed to teach, show, and capture for the world some of its most unexplored locations. The technology used by Canon to create these videos takes viewers to seemingly impossible dark places that were previously beyond what the human eye could see and technology could perceive. Specifically, the remarkable advancement in low-light technology found in the Canon ME20F-SH Multi-Purpose camera plays a feature role in the two new videos. Furthermore, Canon’s EOS C300 Mark II, ME20F-SH, and EOS C500 were used to capture all of the imagery in “See The Light.”</p>
<p>“Canon is proud to create products and technologies that support its customers in pushing the limits of what’s possible,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “It is our responsibility to our customers and our planet to look beyond today and imagine a better tomorrow.”</p>

Portable lighting - Flash vs LED - Newbie question

Wanting some thoughts/advice for a begginer with lighting.

Currently invested with a Canon 580 (ver1) and a Canon 320 flash. I've had some success with using flash off-cam using canon 7d and 80d onboard flash to control
for macros and some portrait shooting, but would like to get better results.

Been thinking of adding a 3rd flash (430 v3) and getting Neewer softboxes (vs umbrella) or going with a Medium (Aputure?) and 2 smaller LED panels and some sort of diffuser.

I recognize the LED panels will have a shorter range, but trading off being able to see what I'm doing at all times (also don't have a studio, so space/portability important).
Both are portable, more or less cost effective solutions (under $600).

Any advice from more experienced folks?

Why No EF Mount Third-Party Bodies

Seeing reports of the new Panasonic video camera that uses the EF Mount, brings to mind something I've wondered about for some time.

Lots of third-party manufacturers make EF mount lenses. Yet, I've often wondered why there aren't some third-party camera manufacturers making EF mount bodies. For example, if Sigma made their bodies with Canon EF Mounts, it seems like they could compete a lot more effectively.

It's too late for Sony now, but I wonder if it would have been a smarter move for them to reverse-engineer the Canon mount and spend less time and energy making inferior lenses.

I would not be at all surprised if in a few years we see a Yongnuo body with Canon mount.

Imagine the benefits to consumers, if you could order a camera body from a third-party manufacturer in an EF mount, just like video cameras. Again using Yongnuo as an example, I could see them producing a 5DIII knockoff and selling it for under $1,000.

135L discontinued?

Hi folks,

I posted a couple of days ago asking for your thoughts on both the Canon and the Sigma 135mm lenses.

Having decided on the Canon, I've just been into Jessops (UK store) who told me that only a few of their stores have them in stock as the lens has been discontinued! They are bringing one over from another store for me to have a look at.

Is this true??? The sales chap double checked the stock, and checked with the store manager.

Thanks.

Just starting with video on a 5D3

After years on being a still shooter, I have just started video. I caught a bit of the bug on my last trip to view waterfalls. I shot video on that trip, but was not really impressed with it. I am preparing for another trip, so I wanted to go out and get some test videos before my next trip. I am not pleased with the results. However, I am not sure if it is 1) technique or 2) post processing. I am shooting with a 5D3 and for these three videos, I used a 16-35 2.8L lens, 24fps 1080. I shot at the lowest ISO possible in increments of 160. I was at 1/30th for 24 frames per second. I selected my aperture based on light reading. I used technicolr's cine camera style (which I am aware is specifically more for post processing.) However, I feel the video is horrible. It is not what I expect from my camera. In particular, you can really see how the video is hammered on the tree in the last video. It's just doesn't seem HD. Can some one point me in a direction? What can I do to make my videos better? Thanks for your advice.

5DIII AF started hunting?

I've got a 5DIII firmware 1.2.1 that I took to Europe with me. 2nd day in I noticed when I use all the AF points with a 24-105 mark I
it is hunting, to the point that AF is basically useless. This was in bright light at the beach in Holland, so light should not be an issue.

Here's the weird thing, when I put the camera in full auto mode it works just fine, it seems to hunt in M/Tv/Av. This is in one-shot mode, not AI-servo.

Maybe it's just the nature of the beast, it hunts more at wide angle because it has more to lock onto, but I'm not used to it running the focus ring back and forth forever, that's never happened before. Hard to believe I've never used all the focus points with a 24mm lens.
It's possible because I mostly shoot sports on the center point or the center cross.

Is this normal? Or did one of the kids drop the camera?

I just tried with the 16-35 III - same thing, it hunts like crazy when using all the points. Works fine with a 3x3 in the center. Move it over to the far right or up from and it hunts like crazy. Any ideas? Something is clearly not right with some of the AF points.

Other info: pulled the lens, put it into movie mode and started it, looked at the sensor, it's perfectly clean, mirror is clean, the glass at the top of the camera looks aligned and clean. So what can make some of the AF points die? Is this fixable or time for a 5DIV?

Wishing I had taken the 1DX instead, it's heavy but the focus works :'(
