Review: Canon EOS 77D by DPReview

HTML:
<p>DPReview has completed their review of the Canon EOS 77D, a DSLR that has confused some people in the Canon world as to why it exists. While it is a rebadged “Rebel T7s”, it does seem to offer enough to make it a worthwhile option at this price point.</p>
<p><strong>From DPReview:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Many newly released cameras are aiming ever further up-market. Part of this comes down to that market shrinking, but also, cameras have broadly become so good in recent years that there isn’t much room for more than two tiers of so-called ‘entry-level’ Rebels. Perhaps that’s what Canon was thinking, because for a camera that’s this capable and well-rounded, it would seem a disservice to bestow upon it a moniker that’s synonymous with the company’s more basic and pedestrian of interchangeable lens cameras.</p>
<p>The Canon EOS 77D is a well-rounded and well-sorted camera. The ergonomics are great, Live View performance is superb and Dual Pixel Autofocus continues to impress. The viewfinder is a little on the small side and it still doesn’t shoot 4K video, but as an all-around package for the enthusiast photographer, the EOS 77D deserves a look. <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-77d-review">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

<p><strong>Best Full-Frame DSLR Expert: <a href="https://bhpho.to/2oUG8Te">Canon EOS 5D Mark IV</a></strong></p>
<p>Selected for this year’s “Best Full-Frame DSLR Expert” award, Canon’s EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR offers impressive specifications. Equipped with an approximately 30.4 megapixel 35 mm full-frame Canon CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6+ image processor, the camera achieves a standard ISO sensitivity range of 100-32000 (expandable to ISO50-102400 equivalent), 7 frames-per-second (fps) continuous shooting of still images and 4K video capture at 30 fps, as well as full-HD video capture at 60 fps and HD 120 fps capture suitable for slow-motion video. Thanks to Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the camera achieves superlative high-speed AF tracking when shooting video and stills in live-view mode. The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is equipped with 61 point high-density reticular AF II, achieving an expanded longitudinal focus area, with a maximum of 41 cross-type focus points of the total 61. Additionally, it features an approximately 150,000 pixel RGB+IR metering sensor. The camera also features a 4K frame capture function, which users can extract selected frames from recorded 4K video as approximately 8.8-megapixel JPEG still images, as well as built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS functionality.</p>
<p><strong>Best DSLR Standard Zoom Lens: <a href="https://bhpho.to/2omsLrx">Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM</a></strong></p>
<p>Named “Best DSLR Standard Zoom Lens,” the EF 24-105 f/4L IS II USM employs a new optical design that incorporates 17 elements in 12 groups, including four glass-molded aspherical elements—one of which features two aspherical surfaces. This standard zoom lens achieves improved peripheral light intake to achieve high image quality across the entire image field. The lens features image stabilization to the effect of 4 shutter speed stops and a circular 10-blade aperture that produces exquisite circular bokeh. Equipped with such features as inner focusing, a Ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) and a high-speed CPU, and sporting an optimized AF algorithm, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM achieves highly responsive autofocusing. The lens also employs a special Air Sphere Coating (ASC), which reduces the occurrences of flaring and ghosting.</p>
<p><strong>Best Camcorder: <a href="https://bhpho.to/2oUJ2XO">Canon XC15</a></strong></p>
<p>Crowned “Best Camcorder,” the XC15 features a compact, lightweight body design and makes possible cost-effective 4K UHD and HD shooting, making it ideal for on-location journalism and video production. The camera facilitates shooting in confined spaces and environments that demand mobility and features the same selection of visual-expression “Look” modes as the EOS C300 Mark II, making it ideal for use as a sub-camera. The XC15 is equipped with a high-sensitivity 1-inch CMOS sensor with individual pixels that feature large light-capturing areas, a touch panel that enables intuitive controls, and a 10x optical zoom lens—27.3 mm at the wide end to 273 mm at the telephoto end when shooting video. The camera features faster autofocus through an orientation-determination algorithm, and enables excellent anti-shake performance afforded by an optical IS system and an electronic IS system with 3 modes to choose from. What’s more, the camera’s separate focus and zoom rings offer a high level operability.</p>
<p>Held every year since 1991, the TIPA Awards recognize the best photo and imaging products announced during the previous 12 months based on such criteria as innovativeness, use of leading-edge technologies, design and ease-of-use. In 1992, Canon took home its first TIPA accolade for the EOS 100 SLR camera and, over 25 separate occasions since then, has been honored with TIPA awards for a total of 81 products and technologies*.</p>

Interview with Sony ILC chief

From DPR:
https://www.dpreview.com/interviews/4571668362/sony-interview-our-focus-is-to-increase-the-overall-market

A few interesting tidbits:

  • They feel they need a more durable camera for wedding/event photogs.

  • Both the Sony heads and DPR (see the caption below the baby shot) hyped the upside of a company that develop both the camera and sensor in-house. Like it's a new concept. ::)

  • Speed (in general) has increased of late, so they will start to court sports and photojournalism folks soon. [Whether they were referring to the fabled A9 or just an upcoming third-gen of the A7 line remains to be seen.]

  • They are 'paying close attention to' 8K and Light Field. They stated LF costs 5 pixels per LF pixel, so it wrecks the attainable resolution.

  • DPR still has a crush on all companies that don't rhyme with Bannon. They literally opened a question with: "One thing Sony can't be blamed for is a lack of caring when it comes to quality." ::)

  • They openly benchmark against other companies' product (as all surely do), but their tone was somewhat refreshing: "We learn from other companies. We must, because we are still beginners."

It's a brief but interesting read from the madmen churning out these A7 rigs.

Candy abstract

What I like about photography competitions at the local club is that taking up the challenge can really make you think of new ways of looking at a subject. Inspired by a photo I found online I set about trying to recreate it, and it wasn't as easy as you'd think.

This is a liquid drop on a sheet of glass above a bowl of candy - my wife thinks it looks 1960s-style pretty trippy.

Black Foam Core Projects

One of my favorite tabletop photography projects involves the use of black foam core board. Subjects such as flowers and my seashell collection look especially nice against the black background. These types of projects celebrate the interplay of light & shadow and make for enjoyable "rainy day" photo sessions.

1dx II delivers on jpeg quality

One of the reasons I splurged on the 1dx ii was that Canon claimed that they worked on the quality of the jpegs it delivers. And yes, yes, they did, oh, my did they ever.

Check this out:

http://mcvoy.com/lm/2017-carrizo-plain/23.html

nothing special, right? Now go look at the original size off the camera:

http://mcvoy.com/lm/2017-carrizo-plain/2017-04-15-10.08.41.jpg

That is straight off the camera jpeg, the lens is the 24-105, not held up as the best lens ever,
but look at the detail in that picture. It's insanely good. In my opinion. As a jpeg shooter I
could not be more happy. I love my 5DIII but the 1DXII is pretty darn good.

Canon C300 Mark II 4K 60p firmware update at NAB 2017?

For any of you C300 Mk II users/owners as I am, do you think or hope or want a firmware update near or at NAB 2017 that will include 4k 60p? In DCI or UHD...either would be nice. That is my hope. Got to keep up with the competition at this point. I believe it would helps sales also. If the camera can write 4K footage to a Cfast card, write proxies to an SD card and simutainiously send out SDI signal to an external monitor or recorder, it can do 4K 60p! C'mon Canon!
This is really the only thing I do not like that is absent from the C300 MK II. Ok and maybe autofocus in special recording crop mode, lol.

Manual Focus Micro Adjustment

i have been using Zeiss lenses on the 5DSR and was frustrated by trying to use the green focus confirm light in the lower right corner...too hard to watch and not very sensitive. I then discovered that when you are using "auto focus point expansion", that the outer 4 (or 8) focus pts will blink out when in focus. The long focus throw of Zeiss lenses helps because that blinking out is very sensitive. When in focus these points go out but either direction past focus they reappear.

I noticed that on the 100 MP that focus was not perfect and then went to the afma settings to see if I could do that. You can actually record an adjustment for these lenses and also record their serial number. I almost always use my camera hand-held so this really has made a difference. I did what I guess is a "manual focus micro adjustment" for all 4 of my Zeiss lenses.

I think this should work for any manual focus lens if the camera reads exif data.

Sony now #2 in FF camera sales in US

Move over Nikon, Sony is fired up for FF in the US:
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/sony-overtakes-2-position-u-130000620.html

Best I can tell from limited information, this claim is:
  • US only
  • Based on dollars (not units)
  • Reflects FF ILCs only -- so lenses, accessories and fixed lens FF cameras (as tiny as that market is) would not be included

LensTip review: Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Art will melt your face

And there it is:
http://www.lenstip.com/501.1-Lens_review-Sigma_A_135_mm_f_1.8_DG_HSM_Introduction.html

From a sharpness perspective, the result is staggering (albeit only on a 5D3):

"Honestly, what I am supposed to write here? My admiration scale ended with the Sigma A 1.4/85 and the results of this lens are even better…Let me word it this way: if the Sigma in the frame centre performed as well as on the edge of full frame I would still enthuse about what a brilliant lens fell into my hands."

Later, in the summary: the Sigma wide open in the corners was sharper than the 135L was in the center of the frame at its sharpest aperture. :o

AF also looked good:

"In studio conditions, where we use mainly the central autofocus point, there were almost no problems with the accuracy of the mechanism, with the number of misses never exceeding 2%. Sample shots outside were a bit a different story as I used side points of autofocus quite often. I didn’t notice any big mistakes but, with a shallow depth of field by f/1.8-2.0, even a small slip-up might be annoying. From f/2.8 upwards everything returned to norm."

But it's far to early to tell if with the AF we have an 85 Art here (good) vs. 35/50 Art here (infuriatingly, randomly bad). Let's hope for the former, of course.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

I recently sold my 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II lens, as I'm on a mission to reduce my gear to what I really use / need. I just don't shoot in the tele focal range enough. But then I decided I wanted something cheap and small for the rare times I do need it, so I bought this lens for $133(USD)!
This is just a test shot as I play around and see what I can squeeze out of it.
Baxter Goose by Philip DiResta, on Flickr

Which Budget EF Prime?

I’m in the market for a low cost (sub €/$350) prime and am a bit unsure of what to go for. My current gear is in my sig but I’ve come to terms with the fact (or maybe my wallet has) that I will be purchasing a 1DXII in the next few months. Ideal combined photo and video camera for my needs in one package that works with native lenses that I already own but maybe that’s another thread entirely…

The prime I buy will be a general purpose lens. For my current work I mainly use my 24-70, 100 macro and 70-200 so the prime is just for when I want to grab some family snaps or take a camera out with me without a load of lenses. I do want to go faster than f2 though.

My current 50 1.8 is leaving me cold. It’s not been treated well and has softened quite a bit since new thanks to not being babied. I’m tempted to just get the newer 50 1.8 STM and be done with it, especially considering the STM will be great with the video autofocus on the 1DXII. Another part of me wants to go up to the 50 1.4 but I can’t help but think a replacement will be rumoured/announced soon and reports of its fragility are putting me off a bit as I generally don’t baby my stuff. I’m also curious to try the 85 1.8 but I wonder if it’ll be too long for general walking around and again, it’s a pretty old lens now with reportedly slow AF not ideal for chasing an active toddler around with.

My budget doesn’t stretch to the Sigma, Zeiss or Tamron 50’s around the €/$500 mark so they’re all out. The pre-owned market in Germany is a bit bizarre in my experience. Prices for pre-owned stuff is generally close enough to new prices to just pay the little extra and go new anyway so barring a stroke of luck, scouring the pre-owned market for a deal is out too. There’s also a cashback deal on both the 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 at the moment which doubly negates the second hand market for these lenses.

I guess this is just a long winded way of asking if in my position you’d buy a new Canon 50 1.4/85 1.8 today or just buy the 50 1.8 STM and sell it when the eventual successor to the current 50 1.4 is released. I know I’m splitting hairs over a couple of hundred euros in comparison to the cost of the 1DXII but it’s precisely the purchase of the 1DXII that is prompting the penny pinching here!
