Raw Quality of upcoming Sony A99 II

German Magazine "Color Foto" 5/2017 released some test results with RAW shots.

They see the Sony A99 II in the Image Quality far in front of their competitors.
A99II reaches 49 Points @Iso 100, The Canon 5D IV 37.5, Canin 1DX II 34 and the M5 32.5..
This is a big gap.

Sony seems to be still leading in sensors.... The A99II has some shortcomings, but not in IQ

Can someone recommend good, reasonably priced C-Stands and source?

Hello all,
In conjunction to my other post asking about the ORLIT battery powered strobe, it occurred to me, I might not have a helper and might need to put it on a stand while outdoors with a modifier.

Is there such a thing as a reasonably priced C-Stand and where can I get them?

Is there an alternative to a C-Stand that is study enough to hold approx 8 lbs with modifier outdoors?

Thanks in advance!!

ORLIT RoveLight RT 610 HSS TTL Monolight vs XPLOR 600 - My first 'strobe' buy..

Helo all,

A week from this weekend (April 22-23), I'm going to be shooting a friend of mine's daughter that's graduating LSU. I want to take some good shots of her on campus, etc.

In addition to natural light shots, I really would like some flash. I have a couple of 600EX-RT's...but I just don't have modifiers much for them and their output, I don't think, is going to be really strong enough, at least alone...to overpower ambient light for some shots.

I've been researching and looking into battery powered strobes...and this, the ORLIT RoveLight RT 610 HSS TTL Monolight looks like it might be a "bang for the buck" good light....

I'm looking at it here:

https://www.amazon.com/ORLIT-RoveLight-RT-Monolight-Bowens/dp/B06W5DZQLL

And at Adorama:
https://www.adorama.com/orlfrl610rtc.html#source=productOptions

It appears to also work with/control my existing canon 600EX-RTs too, so they apparently can be used in conjunction with each other.

This unit seems to be the poor man's "B1"....so far, from reviews I've seen it seems to fit the bill.

I'm curious if any of my fellow CR friends here have had experience with this unit and could give me their thoughts, recommendations either for this or a comparable unit...?

This says it takes a bowen's mount, could anyone recommend a good, but reasonably priced modifier(s) to get with this, especially for shooting outdoors and likely using a VCA (Voice Controlled Assistant)....I'm hoping her Dad will come with me to help hold lights, etc....

Anyway, this looks like something I could really use and take my first step into the strobe world. I like that it has a modeling light.

How does this compare to something like the Flashpoint XPLOR 600 / GODOX AD600 HSS TTL units?

Looking at: https://www.amazon.com/Flashpoint-Battery-Powered-Monolight-Built-2-4GHz/dp/B01F21CM20

Price is compareable, and I really do like the idea of the ability to take the bulb off the head and hand hold it corded....again would be nice for having it hand held by an assistant:

https://www.amazon.com/Flashpoint-Portable-Extension-FlashHead-XPLOR/dp/B01IX26RKI/

I'm still researching, but I'd like to decide and buy to try to get the unit here to me early enough to play with it a bit before I try to take it out on my shoot in a week and a half....

Any thoughts and suggestions GREATLY appreciated!!

<p><strong>Balance Image Quality and Low-Light Performance

</strong>The new D7500 features Nikon’s latest 20.9-megapixel DX-format imaging sensor and EXPEED 5 processing engine, the same high-performance heart of the Nikon D500. Designed to excel in a wide array of shooting conditions, the D7500 eliminates the optical low-pass filter (OLPF) for maximum sharpness and clarity, with the class-leading dynamic range flexibility that is a hallmark of Nikon DSLRs. The compact DX-format form factor also gives photographers extended focal length reach that is an advantage for sports and wildlife photography, especially when coupled with the vast selection of available NIKKOR lenses.</p>
<p>Whether shooting a landscape at dawn or sports under indoor lights, the D7500 affords the latitude of low-light capability to consistently nail the shot, time and time again. Even in the most challenging light, users can capture images with minimal noise, thanks to a native ISO range that spans from 100-51,200, and an expanded ISO range up to an astonishing 1.64 million equivalent. Those same stellar image quality and low noise virtues also apply to those shooting video, whether it’s a 4K UHD production or a mesmerizing astro time-lapse of the night sky.</p>
<p><strong>Focus with Precision, Capture with Confidence

</strong>The Nikon D7500 DSLR gives photographers many new premium features and advanced Nikon technologies to help create incredible images and video:</p>
<ul>
<li>The D7500 is fast enough to keep pace with the quickest athletes or animals; capable of shooting at up to <strong>8 frames-per-second (fps)</strong> with full AF/AE, with an expanded buffer of up to <strong>50 RAW/NEF (14-bit lossless compressed) or 100 JPEG images.</strong></li>
<li><strong>Nikon’s proven 51-point AF</strong> <strong>system</strong> covers a large portion of the frame. A <strong>Group-Area AF</strong> function has been added, which is a preferred focus mode for those shooting fast action.</li>
<li><strong>The slim, tilting 3.2” 922K-dot touchscreen LCD </strong>can be used to easily control, compose and play back, even while mounted to a tripod. The menus can also be easily navigated using the touchscreen function.</li>
<li>Like the Nikon D5 and D500, the <strong>180K RGB Metering </strong>system is used with the Advanced Scene Recognition System to help ensure balanced exposures and fantastic color rendition in nearly any shooting situation.</li>
<li>Lightweight DX form factor allows for an agile, comfortable body with <strong>deep grip </strong>and<strong> comprehensive weather sealing</strong>. The monocoque body is durable and approximately 5% lighter than the D7200 and 16% lighter than the D500.</li>
<li><strong>Shoot all day</strong> and well into the night with up to approximately 950 shots per charge (CIPA standard).</li>
<li>Like the D500 and D5,<strong> the Auto AF Fine Tune </strong>feature when in Live View allows users to automatically calibrate autofocus with specific lenses if needed.</li>
<li>Through the Retouch menu, users can access an <strong>in-camera Batch Process RAW Converter</strong> that can handle multiple images to optimize workflow.</li>
<li>The camera’s pop-up flash can act as a Commander for remote Speedlights, while the camera is also optimized to function with line-of-sight using SB-500, SB-700 and SB-5000. It can even support the radio frequency control system of the SB-5000 when using the optional WR-R10 accessory.</li>
<li>New<strong> Auto Picture Control</strong> function analyzes the picture scene and automatically generates a tone curve within the camera.</li>
<li>Images can automatically be downloaded to a compatible smartphone, and the camera can also be triggered remotely using<strong> Built-in Bluetooth1 and Wi-Fi2</strong></li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Multimedia Capabilities for Creators

</strong>The Nikon D7500 adds in a diverse array of advanced features for multimedia content creators, including 4K UHD (3840 × 2160/30p) video capture and the ability to produce awe-inspiring 4K UHD time-lapse movies in-camera. Video files can be stored as either MOV files or as MP4 files, for greater flexibility and easier playback on a wide range of devices. Like the D500, the D7500 offers 3-axis built-in e-VR image stabilization when shooting 1080p Full HD video, and can be easily focused using the rear touchscreen function.</p>
<p>For the advanced videographer, the D7500 offers simultaneous 4K UHD output to card and uncompressed via HDMI, as well as a headphone and microphone jack for pro-level audio recording and monitoring. To allow for smooth exposure adjustments, the camera also supports power aperture for smooth and step-less depth-of-field transitions while users can also keep highlights in-check using visible zebra stripes in live-view mode.</p>
<p><strong>Price and Availability</strong></p>
<p>The Nikon D7500 will be available in Summer 2017 for a suggested retail price (SRP)* of $1,249.95 for the body only configuration, or with a AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens for $1,749.95 SRP*. Canon 80D Setup for Wildlife

I have been using my 80D to photograph African wildlife for a little while now, and shared my setup here:https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=qjq64-cFv2Y

It certainly is packed with features for what the camera costs and overall I have been very impressed with it. I used to own and use the Canon 30D, 40D, 50D bodies when they where current, and the 80D has so many more setup choices and menu options compared to those cameras, much of it trickled down from higher end Canon cameras. I stopped owning Canon bodies in this series, and skipped the 60D and the 70D because of the missing rear dedicated multi-controller (which I really like for moving my AF point around quickly) and that is still missing on the 80D, which is a frustration. The DPAF Live View just about makes up for it, along with the flip-out screen though.
I am finding it to have the best Canon APS-C sensor in terms of dynamic range, colour and noise so far and I have ended up with some usable wildlife images at higher iso than I ever did before (when using Canon APS-C bodies that is). It makes a good alternative or compliment to the 7D mk2 in the Canon range I thought. The images with this post are shot with the 80D.

Review: Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 by TDP

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the brand new Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2.</p>
<p>From TDP:</p>
<blockquote><p>While I take camera and lens marketing statements with a grain of salt, Tamron in this case delivered on the “… enhanced optical performance, improved VC (Vibration Compensation), faster AF speed and accuracy, and shortened MOD (Minimum Object Distance) …” promise. The Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens design is both visually attractive and functionally very nice. This lens delivers accurate autofocusing and remarkable image quality for an ideal combination that translates to dependably great results. The low price will seal the deal for many. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-70-200mm-f-2.8-Di-VC-USD-G2-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

LensTip review: Samyang 85mm f/1.2 Premium

A slightly kind review of the Samyang 85mm f/1.2 from LT:
http://www.lenstip.com/500.1-Lens_review-Samyang_85_mm_f_1.2_Premium.html

Resolution is only one metric of course, but I don't know how you look at the plots below and then write nice things about it. They go on to call that 'very good image quality in the frame center' in the summary. ::)

Other than saving (I think) $200 and a fraction of a stop, I am hard pressed why one would choose the Samyang over the Sigma Art given its stellar wide open performance... and that small matter of having autofocus.

Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 VC HLD Review - Dustin

Hello everyone, I've just polished off my review of the new Tamron 10-24 VC HLD lens. It's an interesting option for APS-C shooters, with the best feature set of any of them: weather sealing, image stabilization, bigger focal range, and a new focus motor that is fast for stills and smooth for video...and allows for real full time manual override (hello, Canon!)

What is it about the 50 1.2L people don't like?

I see a lot of people bemoaning the fact that Canon has not issued a new 50L in quite some time.

It makes one wonder (I don't have a 50mm prime) what it is about the 50mm f/1.2L that people are dissatisfied with. Is it a poor lens, or is it just that people want something new to hit the market?

With the 35mm f/1.4L II already on the market and then the soon to be announced 85mm f/1.4... I am wondering what people are looking for in a new 50mm that the current model doesn't offer.

I've sold my prized Martin guitar to add a good fast prime to my collection for infant portraits. The only prime I have now is the EF 135mm f/2L and it is too long a focal length for close quarters.

Thanks guys.

First shots from Sigma 135 Art

It came in today. Had some daylight to do some quick random shots and was impressed. I haven't AFMA'd it, etc., but right out of the box it's hitting targets with a sharpness absent any other lens I've used.

Here is an example. Below it is a 1:1 crop in png.

Also, I had heard people poking fun at its size as a "pickle jar." So I got out some pickles my father-in-law made last year and put them on the scale. Where the Sigma lens weighs 2 pounds, 11 ounces, the quart of pickles weighed 3 pounds, 2 ounces. So, no, the siggy weighs only 5/6ths of a pickle jar. However, it was eerily similar in size and dimensions.

Going Traveling Soon, advice needed

Hello Canon forum,

As you guys can see from the title I have a big trip coming up. I will be visiting as much of South East Asia as I can in six months and I want to capture ever moment that I possibly can. Apart from the standard throw-away cameras you get from a local store (I know it's a sin) I haven't ever bought or used any other camera, so where do I start?

I have had a read through the forum over the past couple of weeks and there is just so much to choose from I had to make a thread so I can get you guys to point me in the right direction or just tell me what I should do. I am looking to spend around £750 roughly to get the best camera I can for the money. I want to be able to take the most stunning landscape pictures as well as being able to zoom etc, you guys know more about that....
canon-logo-london-uk-october-st-close-up-shot-company-packaging-one-their-products-st-october-83001733.jpg

I appreciate the advice/idea you guys are going to throw my way! this has to be the best place for info!

RX1R III to happen before an A7R II follow-up?

Not sure if I buy this:
https://photorumors.com/2017/04/09/sony-is-rumored-to-announce-a-new-rx1r-iii-camera/

I don't see them updating the RX1R II with the same sensor, so... why would the fixed-lens variant get the new EXMOR sensor hotness before their A7 line does? Are these RX1R rigs selling well enough to warrant such special treatment ahead of their ILC flagship?

35 1.4 II v/s 35 f2 IS

I have checked TDP comparison of the two lenses. 35mm 1.4 II is highly rated.

I have the 35 f2 IS. I like the fact that it has IS and is a life saver when I am without my tripod and want to shoot a cityscape or natural landscape in low light.

The II tempts me. I have money to buy it but do not want to spend unless really worth it.

Do you suppose the results of II will way surpass the IS lens in real world photography?

OOF background between 1.4 and 2 is minimal to me and would not be a factor.

Thanks so much!

Anyone testing lens contrast?

I'm shooting with mid range lenses and generally pretty happy with the results, I'm also caring less and less about resolution as a differentiator between images.. light, composition, subject all trump the technical side, so I've become more concerned about effects you can see in small prints or web size images. If an image I take doesn't work at web size then I'll cull it. So I've changed to caring about technical aspects that show in small shots.

The biggies are :

Boke and OOF effects.
Contrast & Colour.
AF accuracy/consistancy.

Boke and AF are well covered across the net, but Contrast and Colour?

I understand that coatings do a lot to improve lenses Colour and contrast. A good coating will not produce reflections that could otherwise produce diffuse and highly out of focus washes of light across the sensor, thus reducing contrast and muddying colours, especially if those washes have any colour to them due to variaitions in performance of coatings with wavelength.

So.. if coatings can improve colours then they are good, and there must be a quatifiable test for this, and so I dug around and found this:

http://www.imatest.com/docs/veilingglare/

They have tested a very small handful of lenses.. but try as I might no one else seems to be doing this test or anything else that is useful in any real way.

DPreview : no
DXOmark : no
TDP : well they do a test but the result is highly subjective, I certainly can't compare lenses using it.
Dustin : a comment here and there on "strong contrast", difficult to compare lens to lens.
photozone.de : no

and just for fun this is what you get without coatings: http://nofilmschool.com/2012/12/whats-special-about-uncoated-lenses

So anyone come across a site that measures lens contrast?

Show me a SHARP 5D Mark IV photo

I've been trying to find a SHARP (not that sharp, just as sharp as a 5D3 with focus nailed and good light) 5D Mark IV photo, full sized preferably a portrait.

Every website, every review I could find, provides samples that have either:
- too high ISO
- type of photo not good for evaluating sharpness
- Sample got resized
- missed focus
- a combination of all above

I want to convince myself to buy one instead of a 5DSR, I don't want to deal with reduced battery life, huge raw files, 5fps, worse high ISO performance and no touch screen.

However, I couldn't find a single image (full sized) that convinces me that the 5D4 outperforms even the sharpness of my 5D3. From the files I've seen - real life samples from dpreview - it doesn't even outperform my first DSLR (the t3i/600D)

The files available at pixelpeeper were even more disappointing, I look at that and damn, those are BAD!

I'd really appreciate some proof that the 5D4 can produce tack sharp files. Not that I'm a super picky pixel perfect guy, but I really don't want to spend top dollar in something that won't outperform my 5 year old 5D3.

The Next Lens from Canon & NAB Announcements

HTML:
The next EF lens announcement from Canon will be for the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS.<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-85mm-f1-4l-is-usm-on-the-way-cr3/"> We originally reported on this lens back in November</a> and unfortunately eately we don’t have any more information to report.</p>
<p>We’re thinking the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS will be announced some time in Q2/early Q3 but we hope to nail down an announcement date soon.</p>
<p>We have been told that this lens will not replace the EF 85mm f/1.2L, and that the classic 85L will remain current in the lineup for the foreseeable future.</p>
<p>As for NAB in a few weeks, we do expect to see some announcements on or around April 20, 2017. We’re now being told that there will be no Cinema EOS prime lenses announced for the show, instead we’ll be getting a cinema zoom lens.</p>
<p>The only thing we know for sure is that EOS 5D Mark IV will get a big firmware update announcement on or around April 20, 2017. We haven’t confirmed with absolute certainty that our <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/crop-factor-change-for-4k-canon-eos-5d-mark-iv-included-in-coming-update-more/">previous report on the updated features is 100% legitimate</a>.</p>
<p>There is a new Cinema EOS camera body coming, but as we reported earlier, it won’t be announced for NAB and will come later in the year. If we go by the little bit of information we’ve heard about the camera, it will be a “baby” C300 Mark II. A Cinema EOS C200 perhaps?</p>
<p>All is still quiet on the EOS 6D Mark II, but we definitely expect things to heat up soon.</p>

I already was talking about this topic here maybe year ago, that was before 5D4 came out. Now that I have 5D4 I still have a problem.

My typical video need: indoor sports at not-too-bright gyms. For stills, I'm shooting 1/500 F2.8 ISO6400. My dream/hope would be to have video camera that would do 1080p 240fps 1/500 F2 ISO3200.

5D4 fell short on many of those. 1080p only shoots 60fps. 720p shoots 120fps without AF. My current video camera is ~5year old Panasonic camcorder which does decent quality 1080p60, but it doesn't have manual settings, it doesn't go 1/500 or F2. No clue on ISO. So while 5D4 is better, it's still not what I want. So the search continues.

Here's what I care about:
Must have manual controls for shutter etc.
Must have AF
Must work in that light level mentioned above
Must have 120fps at reasonable resolution
Can't be too expensive (not going $30k camera here...)

Would be nice to have:
240fps or more
EF lens mount

Don't care much:
4k (I don't mind, it'd be handy on some projects but for sports I need fps)
audio (I have external recorder)

Last summer I was really hoping 5D4 would have 1080p120 and 720p240, but it didn't. And to make it worse, no AF while shooting 120fps. Another good contender is Sony A6500. It'll do 1080p120 with AF. Also I could get the Sony 35mm F1.8 lens for that, plus EF metabones adapter. But the reviews for Sony are not that stellar.

And now there's GH5 coming with 1080p180. That's quite interesting, although I'm worried about the sensor size for low light.

The new Panasonic camcorders do 1080p120 or 1080i240, which is decent option too and they are not that expensive either. Sony RX100 would be nice if it did more than 4 second at a time. Samsung NX is ok too, but not that great.

I'll be shooting at US nationals this summer, so it'd be nice if I get something by then. I'm planning to shoot at World championships next year summer, so before that I'll get something for sure.

I can't really see any option that would say "Yes! this is the best solution!", so maybe I should wait until next summer? Or is there option I didn't think about? Usually already just writing out my thinking like this helps me to decide, but it'd be nice to get outside opinions too.

Nikon D7500 coming

Nikon's 80D-killer is apparently en route:
http://photorumors.com/2017/04/07/nikon-announcement-next-week-new-d7500-dslr-camera-expected/

...looks like a lot like a D500-lite, which I'm sure will delight the Nikon crop users, but if they drop the D500 sensor in there, it would actually be a 4 MP drop from the 24MP the D7100 and D7200 had.

Has a sequel / mk II / next version of an SLR line ever gone down in resolution?
