<p><em>New Compact and Lightweight EF-S Macro Lens Opens Up a World of Photographic Possibilities and Helps Capture Close Subjects with Incredible Detail</em></p>
<p><strong>MELVILLE, N.Y., April 6, 2017</strong> – Compact and lightweight, the new Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM, announced today by Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is the widest-angle Macro offering in Canon’s popular EF-S lens series. The new lens is designed to help both entry-level and advanced amateur DSLR photographers discover the incredible possibilities of macro photography. Capable of capturing close-up subjects with incredible detail, Canon’s new EF-S macro lens is also the first in the series to feature built-in Macro Lites that allow users to control lighting with ease.</p>
<p>“Macro lenses are an amazing way to explore the worlds that exist all around us, and the new Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM lens is the ideal starting point for amateur photographers eager to capture incredible, up-close details on the go,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Whether capturing a delectable dessert or the subtleties of a backyard flower, users will be challenged to find new colors and shapes that turn everyday moments into art.”</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The new Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM captures stunning images and is a terrific companion lens for entry-level users eager to expand beyond their existing Canon EOS DSLR kit lens. Capable of shooting as close as 30mm from the end of the lens to the subject, aspiring photographers can get up close to a fruit or flower for an entirely new perspective, while capturing high-quality images with beautiful background blur. Additional technologies built into the new Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM lens include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Popular 35mm focal length (56mm equivalent) and wide f/2.8 aperture</li>
<li>Hybrid IS system offers up to four stops* of shake correction</li>
<li>Smooth Movie Servo AF with Lead Screw-type STM ensures quiet AF operation</li>
<li>Full-time Manual Focus</li>
</ul>
<p>In a first for the EF-S lens series, the new Canon EF-S 35mm lens sports built-in Macro Lites that allow photographers to carefully arrange macro lighting without using special equipment. With built-in LED lights on each side of the lens, users can create compelling shadows on either side of a subject or adjust intensity to give images a sense of dimension. Once the scene is set, the lens uses superb rendering performance to capture high contrast, sharp images.</p>
<p>While specialized for high magnification photography, the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is still a versatile option for day-to-day use, easily capable of capturing portraits, landscapes or snapshots. As the latest addition to the lineup of EF-S lenses, Canon continues its commitment to providing a wide-range of affordable lens options for photographers of all levels.</p>
<p>The Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM lens is scheduled to be available in June 2017 for an estimated retail price of $349.99.</p>

Bokehlicious – The Sigma 135mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art Series Lens Review by MPEX

HTML:
The folks at Midwest Photo Exchange have published a <a href="https://mpex-experience.com/2017/04/05/bokehlicious-the-sigma-135mm-f1-8-dg-hsm-art-series-lens/">review of the yet-to-be-released Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG Art series lens</a> and they came away extremely impressed</p>
<p>Here are some of the highlights from the review written by Tim Neumann.</p>
<p><strong>Autofocus</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>I found the autofocus system to not only be accurate, but surprisingly fast, with pretty quick focus acquisition, even in less than ideal contrast situations. The surprise really settled in when I realized that it is pretty consistently beating the focusing speed of my 85mm f/1.2, that’s my normal street shooting lens. A lot of times, street shooting requires, quick stealthy shooting, so that you can catch that decisive moment exhibited by your subjects. As a back button focuser, I really appreciated the ability to quickly acquire focus, lock it in, and move the camera into the desired position for the shot.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Image Quality</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Sigma’s 135mm f/1.8 Art Series lens features two SLD (Super Low Dispersion) glass elements and two FLD (Fluorite Low Dispersion) glass elements. The purpose of these glass elements is to help minimize chromatic aberrations, especially in out of focus areas, within portraits, that capture bokeh, or in slender objects and fine tree branches. The net effect is to provide a lens that results in high resolution, sharply focused images, throughout the entire aperture range of the lens.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Summary</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Well you have probably figured out by now I like this lens and really, image wise, what’s not to like? The results I am seeing, represent their original scenes well, hold details in shadows nicely, provide lifelike colors with pleasing warm tones and the bokeh, well not much more can be said about that. For portrait style images and narrower field of view images, this lens is a strong tool to have in the kit. So strong in fact, my order has been placed. <a href="https://mpex-experience.com/2017/04/05/bokehlicious-the-sigma-135mm-f1-8-dg-hsm-art-series-lens/">Read the complete review at MPEX.</a></p></blockquote>

Avenger D600 or Matthews Baby Boom Which One & Why?

I've already decided on a Matthews Hollywood Baby Jr. Triple Riser Stand but I'm left in a quandary on picking the Avenger D600 boom or the Matthews Baby Boom. There's about $100 difference but I don't see any obvious benefit to the Matthews since both of them have a steel construction. The Avenger in fact has a hook for a counterweight yet the Matthews doesn't, mind you, that can be fixed with a clamp on counterweight.

I realize recommendations are naturally inclined towards users ownership, but I'd greatly appreciate if anyone can point out an obvious difference I've overlooked that might account for the $100.00 spread. I don't mind spending a little more for advantages. I buy correctly one.

Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM Pricing & Another Image

HTML:
According to NokiS___a, the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM will cost around 50,000 yen, which directly converts to about about $450 USD. The Yen pricing tends to be higher than the actual price in North America, so perhaps we can expect a $399 price tag? I’m guessing on the price, but we don’t have to wait long to find out.</p>
<p>The lens will be announced at 12:01AM EST on April 6, 2017 and is expected to begin shipping in late May.</p>

Canon Industrial Drone PD6E2000-AW-CJ1 Coming

HTML:
<strong>Update

</strong>There have been a few questions about who has actually made the drone in question.</p>
<p>According to <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/news/1167632525/canon-outfits-industrial-drone-with-me20f-sh-all-purpose-camera">DPReview</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>It’s not a Canon-made drone. In late 2016 Canon Marketing Japan <a href="http://cweb.canon.jp/newsrelease/2016-09/pr-prodrone.html" target="_blank">made an investment</a> in Prodrone Co., a Japanese drone maker, stating that Canon would install imaging devices on the company’s drones and act as a principal distributor. Canon is aiming for ¥5 billion worth of by 2020 from drone-related imaging sales.</p></blockquote>
<hr />
<p><strong>Original Post

</strong>It looks like Canon is moving into drones with the eloquently named PD6E2000-AW-CJ1.</p>
<p>The new drone will use the ME20F-SH super high ISO camera we’ve all seen crazy high ISO footage from. This drone will apparently be aimed at the search and rescue market due to the cameras ability to shoot in low light. The price tag for the drone is reported to be around $20,000, which we assume doesn’t include the <a href="https://bhpho.to/2oBO0K2">$20,000 ME20F-SH camera</a>.</p>
<p>Canon will be showing more about this new drone at the <a href="http://www.vcom-expo.jp/">Video Transmission Expo in Tokyo</a>.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>While the consumer market for drones is becoming quite large, <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-drone-regulations-marc-garneau-1.4027486">regulations on recreational use in various countrie</a>s may be a negative impact on the market growing. Canon may see a far more lucrative market in the industrial space.</p>
<p>You can read more about the drone at <a href="http://www.wetalkuav.com/canon-drone-full-frame-camera/">WeTalkUAV</a> or <a href="http://cweb.canon.jp/ind-drone/lineup/disaster-prevention/pd6e2000-aw-cj1/index.html">Canon Inc</a>.</p>
<blockquote><p>Canon ME20F-SH Multi-Purpose Camera captures video at up to 1920 x 1080p 60 and supports both NTSC and PAL broadcast frame rates. The camera incorporates a full frame 35mm-sized sensor with approximately 2.26 million pixels. This results in a pixel that is about 7.5 x larger than the pixels on optional Canon Full-frame DSLR cameras, which provides for camera’s notable ISO rating.</p></blockquote>

Patent: Using Aluminum To Reduce Flare in DO Lens Elements

HTML:
We continuously see new patents for diffractive optics lenses, something Canon continues to work and that we’ll see in a new <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-600mm-f4-do-br-at-canon-expo/">EF 600mm f/4 DO IS</a> sometime in the future (Photokina 2018 perhaps?).</p>
<p>This <a href="http://pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?PageNum=0&docid=09612372">latest patent</a> selectively uses aluminum to reduce light scattering or flare in diffractive lens elements.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-ef-lenses-rumours-and-news/">Keith at Northlight Images</a>, who is far better at reading patents than I explains:</p>
<blockquote><p>Aluminium is deposited onto the diffractive element at an angle, so as to build up a denser layer on the grating walls (blue) than the front surface (yellow). The aluminium layer is then partially oxidised, converting the front surface coating to a transparent layer of alumina (Al2O3)</p>
<p>Light going (‘the wrong way’) through the grating walls is a major contributor to flare, and in the patent, a test example reduced this by 8 times.</p></blockquote>
<p>While we can only confirm that an EF 600mm f/4 DO IS is coming, thanks to Canon showing off an early prototype at Canon EXPO 2015, we have had suggestions that multiple DO lenses may be announced in the coming years, and not just in supertelephoto applications.</p>

Nikkei: Canon Carefully Cultivates Critical New Ventures

<p><em>Electronics giant seeks synergy, cost cutting as core fields mature</em></p>
<p><strong>TOKYO</strong> — “Consider me part of this family,” <a class="mwMoTrg" href="http://asia.nikkei.com/Company/05DZHY-E" target="_self">Canon</a> Chairman and CEO Fujio Mitarai urged management at the newly acquired Toshiba Medical Systems in January.</p>
<p>Canon takes synergy with its new businesses seriously. It has to. Old core businesses such as camera and office equipment have matured, and the company has leaned into mergers and acquisitions in new fields. Canon’s future growth depends largely on how well the company can raise the seeds it has planted, and they have been slow to bear fruit. <a href="http://asia.nikkei.com/Japan-Update/Canon-carefully-cultivates-critical-new-ventures">Read the whole story</a></p>

Clouds or northern lights?

Curious what you guys think of the streaks in the sky in this photo. There is obviously a lot of light coming from the town on the horizon, and I'm not sure if those are just clouds getting lit up by the town, or if those are very weak northern lights. You can see some very faint bands above the most noticeable parts that make me lean towards them being northern lights. I think the green showing through the trees on the right side of the photo is just lighting from a house somewhere down the shore.

Magic Lantern Gets 4K Video Working on the EOS 5D Mark III

HTML:
It looks like Magic Lantern has done it again, this time proving that they can get 4K video recording onto the Canon EOS 5D Mark III.</p>
<p>What started as an April Fool’s joke has actually turned out to be reality.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><a href="http://blog.planet5d.com/2017/04/magic-lantern-cracks-4k-video-on-the-canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-hidden-inside-an-april-fools-joke-is-reality/">Planet5D</a> says of the development:</p>
<blockquote><p>Now, please realize, much of this isn’t like full 4k with choose what ever you want fps, bit rate etc, some is pretty limited and you even have to put up with B&W previews. Here’s a comment from Alex for example “Only the simplest crop mode (1920×1080) h</p>
<p>as good real-time preview. The modes with higher vertical resolutions have color preview too, but it’s not centered (only the top of the frame is shown). In the regular crop_rec branch, there’s also centered 5x zoom. Here I’ve removed it temporarily, as it increased the code complexity quite a bit, but I’ll probably add it later when things will settle.”</p></blockquote>
<p>On the 5D Mark III, you now have the following new resolutions:</p>
<p>* 1920×960 @ 50p (both 1:1 crop and full-frame – 3×3 pixel binning)

* 1920×800 @ 60p (same as above)

* 1920×1080 @ 45p and 48p (3×3 binning)

* 1920×1920 @ 24p (1:1 square crop)

* 3072×1920 @ 24p (1:1 crop)

* 3840×1600 @ 24p (1:1 crop)

* 4096×2560 @ 12.5p (1:1 crop)

* 4096×1440 @ 25p (1:1 crop)

* Full-resolution LiveView: 5796×3870 at 7.4 fps (128ms rolling shutter).</p>
<p>The last feature complements the well-known full-resolution silent pictures – the new implementation will be usable at fast shutter speeds, without the exposure gradient – but with rolling shutter (just like regular LiveView frames).</p>

Roger's Random Photography Marketing Generator

HTML:
Roger at Lensrentals.com was bored a little while ago and decided to try his hand at marketing for the photography world!</p>
<blockquote><p>Somedays I get bored with testing. Somedays I have to read new product release blurbs and get nauseous. And somedays I find something funny on the internet.</p>
<p>All three of these happened the other day, which led to me randomly corresponding with <a href="http://sebpearce.com/">Seb Pearce</a> about my thoughts that today’s photography marketing blurbs were so boring they might as well be generated by a computer. Which, led, of course, to generating random photography marketing blurbs by a computer – basically I collected a bunch of over used adjectives and phrases and Seb designed an engine to string them together fairly randomly. Then we threw in a bit of extra verbiage that I just thought should be there as Easter Eggs.</p>
<p>So if you’re bored (or maybe laid off your marketing department and need some copy for that new lens you’re about to release), follow the link, click on Generate and see what you get. It might be amusing, or it might be almost indistinguishable from a manufacturer’s website.</p></blockquote>

Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 VC G2

An early preview of the new Tamron 70-200's AF performance -- including AF consistency on a fixed target -- is shared here:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=20305

I appreciate that it's a f/2.8 zoom and not an f/1.4 prime, but it would appear that Tamron has had better luck at reversing Canon AF routines than Sigma has.

Social Media tags

I'm always interested in looking at others photography. Currently, it's not exactly easy to quickly browse pictures from the many talented photogs on this site, though I always enjoy when I do.
I figured I would start a thread requesting people to share their Instagram tags or to even create an account with Instagram specifically to share your work so us CR members can admire each others work more readily and leisurely (for when we're not on CR).
Thoughts anyone?
I hope some of you have accounts you wouldn't mind sharing with me.. I'd love to see your pictures!

I'll start. currently on Instagram I am @retlaw_stratus

Thanks,
-Jonathan

p.s. If people think it's a good idea, maybe we could even include a "CR" in our insta profile description so we can easily identify fellow members of Canon Rumors?!

Tamron 70-200 G2 Thorough Review by Dustin

Hi everyone,
I’ve finally gotten my coverage wrapped up on the new 70-200 G2. I will release one more direct comparison between the G2 and the Canon 70-200L II, but I’ll hold off a bit on releasing that.

Here’s the text review: http://bit.ly/70200G2DA
Here’s the final video review: http://bit.ly/70200G2Vid
Image Gallery: http://bit.ly/70200G2IG
Whole Video Playlist (Image Quality, Build, Extenders, Focus Breathing, etc…): http://bit.ly/70200G2Playlist

To my knowledge this represents the most comprehensive review of the lens that has been done at this point, and I’ve had a strong response to the content released to this point. People are interested in the lens. This should help to answer a lot of questions about it. I cover image quality, autofocus, focus breathing, use with extenders, use on APS-C, and even used it some via adapter on a Sony A7rII.

1dx mk2 files and Lightroom , can't get sharpness/detail still...

Hi guys!

I have written about this before, but I was basically told I was too picky and a pixel peeper, but I'll try again since it's been a while and perhaps more people have gotten their cameras and have exerpienced the same issue.

The issue is simply lack of detail and sharpness. With the 1dx mk1 I could oversharpen and still see more and more detail, but with artifacts. The normal values I used with the 1dx mk1 looks completely soft like OOF with the 1dx mk2. I bump the values up to about 70-80 on amount, 0,8 on radius and 50 for detail, and still looks very soft with lots of details lost. The only ay to get sharper images is to resize to a smaller mp-value and use HighPass sharpening in Photoshop.....

Does anyone else experience this, and if not, are you using Lr?

Thanks! Please answer seriously or not at all as I'm pretty frustrated with this,,,,

Canon W-E1 Wi-Fi Adapter DISABLES Tethering

As a public service announcement, I have learned that the Canon W-E1 Wi-Fi Adapter disables tethering via USB. Canon EOS Utility, Lightroom, Android DSLRController via USB OTG, etc. are all disabled as long as the W-E1 is in the camera.

I found this out after stupidly thinking it was Windows, a bad cable, and many other things. WHY??? Canon did this, I don't know, but hopefully this saves at least one other person from beating their head against the wall like an idiot.

5D MKIV SD Card best choice?

An odd question seeing as I don't even have a MKIV yet but I need to buy a couple of large capacity SD cards for my Panasonic video cameras but looking forward to the near future I think it would be a good idea to be able to use them in the 5D4 I plan to get so...what are the best SD cards for optimum performance in the MKIV?

Also I seem to remember reading somewhere that by putting a particular type of SD card in the 5D4 it can actually slow down the transfer speed? I can't remember where I saw this so maybe a sanity check from someone might be in order.

Long question made short; what SD Card would perform best in the 5D4?

Thanks & kind regards,

Canon Very Large Sensor Media Format Mirrorless 1Dx2 style Camera Seen in Wild

This is a reformatted copy of an email sent to me from
colleagues in the Netherlands and Germany in Early 2017
*** CONFIRMING *** that an in-the-wild test prototype
was seen in Munich, Germany during a Football match
(that's soccer for you Americans!) that was ALSO CONFIRMED
via an earlier-in-year and later-in-year PHYSICAL closeup examination
of a similar system to be a MEDIUM FORMAT CANON CAMERA that has
a very large CMOS sensor in a body style very similar to a
Canon 1Dx Mark II camera but of course larger in size
to accommodate the larger sensor and lenses.

START OF FIRST EMAIL SENT TO ME FROM NETHERLANDS/GERMANY:
=============================================
RE: Confirmation of Canon 1Dx style body Medium format camera for 2018

This email is to confirm an
October 2016 article from German
camera enthusiasts group "EigenVector",
that an in-the-wild, fully-working
medium format Canon camera was seen
this weekend January 6, 2017 at
Olympiapark München stadium complex
in Munich, Germany during an indoor
football match.

"EigenVector" member "RosenBlatt"
spotted a noted and known European
Canon Engineer hovering undercover
at field-side during an indoor
football match held within the
Olympiapark complex.

Noticing an extremely large lens
mated to very large camera body
that was similar in appearance to a
Canon 1Dx series camera but larger,
"RosenBlatt" attempted to strike up
a conversation with said engineer but
was hastily rebuffed and the Canon
Engineer took hasty leave of the premises.

RosenBlatt's female companion was able
to take photos via her own Canon 5D Mk3
with a long lens to prove once and for
all that Canon is now field testing a
medium format camera.

After examination, these photos proved
nearly identical in looks to a camera
present in photos and video taken in
Japan in early summer 2016.

After an exciting day contacting
our sources in Japan who obtained
the original photos and video,
we are able to confirm some changes
to specifications present in our
earlier report.

The new specification are a
56mm by 42mm CMOS sensor Bayer
Pattern which is a slightly larger
sensor on the vertical than the
56mm by 38mm sensor outlined
in our earlier report.

It is confirmed that this is
a <<MIRRORLESS>> camera!

Resolution is now 8192 by 6036 pixels
still using 16 bits per Red, Green and
Blue colour channel coupled to a newly
added imaging format of 4:4:4 colour-
sampled JPEG-2000 which is wavelet-
based. This has been confirmed by
our sources!

It has also been confirmed to us
that the JPEG-2000 format is in
addition to the normal JPEG used
within all current Canon DSLRs.

It is a user selectable option
allowing full wide gamut image
capture using the wavelet
compression algorithm.

Pixel size has also been confirmed
as being 6.82 microns with an improved
linearity of light capture giving
low-light performance an improvement
of 5% over the already impressive
Canon 1Dx Mk2.

This means lower noise in the shadows
at the same ISO as compared to the
1Dx Mk2.

One massive improvement for usability
is allowing the definition of custom
menu layouts on scrollable 25-item
screens where common camera functions
can be aggregated into a single place.

Five such scrollable 25-item
touchscreen menus can be created
and labelled into a tabbed notebook
style of interface.

These custom menus are created
off-camera as a text file but can
be imported via Wifi or via USB3.

==========================================
END OF FIRST EMAIL SENT TO ME FROM NETHERLANDS/GERMANY.

START OF SECOND EMAIL SENT TO ME FROM NETHERLANDS/GERMANY:
=============================================

Stated Specifications

Canon 1Dx-body Style with 6x4.5-type
Medium Format Camera:

* Global Shutter Sensor with a
now-specified 14.5 EV at ISO 100
Dynamic range vs 13.5 EV for 1Dx Mk2
It was explained to us that video
shooters could expect a true dynamic
range of 14 stops at ISO 800 which
is better than even the newly
released C700 cinema camera!
This looks well for low-light
shooting at high ISO values
as the EV drop-off curve is
noted to be flatter than the
1Dx Mk2.

* Shutter speed at full frame is
now an <<ASTOUNDING>> 25 fps
which is 3 fps higher than
specified in our earlier
2016 report!

* 4:4:4 colour sampling at 16 bits per
channel RAW and RGB Ultra Wide Gamut

* ISO range is ISO 100 to 51200 with
extensions down to 50 and up to 409600

<<TWO>> 63.5mm (2.5 inch?) SATA SSD
drives for high capacity still
photo and video file storage.

We have confirmed that testing was
completed with two inserted
3-terabyte Samsung SSD removable
storage drives!

* 802.11ac Wifi with multiple logon
accounts to autosend and <<EXCHANGE>>
photos too!

Two Canon MF cameras can obtain
photos from each other via
peer-to-peer Wifi and download
photos from external sources to
local C-Fast cards and internal
SSD drives!

* Confirmation that video recording
is supported at DCI 4k (4096x2160),
UHDTV (3840x2160) and HDTV (1920x1080)
downsampled from the full sensor
area at 24 fps, 25 fps, 30 fps,
50 fps, 60 fps, 100 fps and 120 fps.

HDMI output is confirmed clean of
any overlays at 4k DCI, 3840 and
1080 resolutions!

It is also confirmed to us that
MPEG4 interframe compression at
10 bits per channel 4:2:2 colour
sampling is now enabled!

* Canon Clog/Clog2/Clog3 and five
User-definable Log file entries
are confirmed present.

* 3.5mm audio input jack is present

* We have now confirmed that a more
expensive 120 megapixels at 8-to-10
fps version will be released at the
same time!

* It is confirmed that a 50mm and 85mm
lens in addition to a 600 mm
telephoto were tested in the wild
with four new zoom lenses to be
introduced at the same time for
the new medium format mount sizes.

It is confirmed that the lenses
will contain on-lens LED displays
for easy viewing of statistical
information even in low-light
situations!

* It is confirmed that a mid-2018
introduction date is specified

* Price for Body-only was given as a
range from 12000 Euros to as much as
16000 Euros at introduction! This is
<<VERY INEXPENSIVE>> compared with
Hasselblad or Phase One but with
a 25 fps burst shooting speed at
50 megapixels!

* It has been confirmed that lenses
will not be cheap and from 1.5x to
3x the price of the premium EF lenses
at equivalent focal lengths and at
least twice as heavy! You will need
to start working out and beef up
your tripods!

============================================
END OF SECOND EMAIL SENT TO ME FROM NETHERLANDS/GERMANY.

As an addendum to my second email, it was outlined to me
that the primary still photo codec to be used to compress photos
is a 4:4:4 Wavelet-based JPEG-2000 codec and the colour sampling
is 16-bits per channel native BUT but user choosable downsampling
of additional 12 bits, 10 bits and 8 bits per channel.

It was also outlined to me that the primary highest-fidelity
motion video codec is a Motion Wavelet-based ALSO with
4:4:4 16-bits NATIVE and also user-selectable per channel
colour sampling intraframe codec. No mention or RAW video
recording was made in my received emails but that RAW FORMAT
still photo shooting at 16 bits per channel IS AVAILABLE!.

And thirdly, it was outlined to me that the primary INTERFRAME
codec that has the longest recording times is a variation on
an H.265 codec (NOT the MPEG-4 outlined above!) that is to
be 4:2:2 quality with an option to choose ONE OF 8-bits,
10 bits ...OR... 12-bits per colour channel of colour sampling.
The camera NATIVELY captures at 16 bits per channel and
down-samples to the 12, 10 and 8-bits per channel.

Those bodes very well for high-dynamic range imaging
and by mentioning the specification terms of 14.5 EV
at ISO 100, I can PERSONALLY conclude on a technical basis,
there SHOULD BE a noise-reduction at ISO levels at or above
6400 between 5% to 15% and more over the already
impressive 1Dx Mk 2. This means that shooting at say
ISO 1600 you could probably shoot a few minutes after
sunset scene and almost NO NOISE will be seen and
colours will still be nearly fully saturated!

And finally, it has been confirmed by my sources that
TWO VERSIONS of the camera will be sold. A 50 megapixel
version and a 120 megapixel version to replace the 5Ds/r
camera.

It is indeed fully mirrorless and WILL shoot a full burst
of 25 frames per second at 50 megapixels which is an
astonishingly high speed! I hope they have the cooling
system and battery life down pat on these cameras!

I received a range of 7 fps to 10 fps burst rate shooting speed
for the 120 megapixel version of the medium format mirrorless.

The only concern I have is paying between 12 000 to 16 000 Euros
which I think is a bit steep BUT at 25 fps at 50 megapixels it might
change the medium format game ENTIRELY especially if the body
style stays with the 1Dx Mk 2 style!

I know this may seem like an utterly unbelievable rumour
to you, but my sources are rather impressive in their contacts
SO I MUST give them the benefit of the doubt because of their
personal and peer standing in still imaging and video engineering circles!

It looks like Canon is getting very serious about high end photography
at larger sensor sizes. I think more than a few pros would switch to
Canon MF if the body style was kept the same as the 1Dx Mk2 and
the burst shooting speed actually IS the stated 25 fps!

That speed CHANGES EVERYTHING within action sports and
wildlife photography circles at 50 megapixels and a 120 megapixel
version also changes everything for landscape, portrait
and fashion photographers!

**** I should note even though the above emails
**** state that photos of the prototype camera were taken
**** by 2nd/3rd parties, I DO NOT HAVE THOSE PHOTOS !!!

What do you think about the specs?

Does anybody have any 3rd party confirmation
of these specs to share with canon rumors?

Choice of buying used camera body

My friend is looking to buy a FF camera body. He wants to buy one of the followings and need some opinion.

a. Canon 5D Mark II - some minor signs of use, looks clean and comes with basic accessories, i.e. charger, battery and strap. (Priced at US$700 equivalent)

b. Canon 6D - looks very clean and has most of the original accessories. (Priced at US$900)

c. Canon 5D mark III - visible scratches on the rear panel near the LCD and on the LCD glasses and signs of uses elsewhere. Missing mode dial cap. ( Priced at US$1150)

First two cameras have around 20K to 25K shutter actuation and the 5D3 has around 35K.

I haven't had a chance to view the 3 cameras for him but based on his description, I advised him to pick the 6D. The 5DII was good but it's aged and 5DIII seemed to be a bit of abused. I think he prefer the 5D3 but can't make up his mind. He is now shooting with a Rebel 650D.

Just basing on the above limited info what is your opinion ?

Of course, I will share with him this forum and let him decide.
