Review: Zeiss 135mm f/2 Milvus

HTML:
Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Zeiss 135mm f/2 Milvus series lens. The review starts with what appears be high praise, as Bryan asks; “<em>Is the Zeiss 135mm f/2 Milvus lens perfect?”</em></p>
<p><strong>From TDP:</strong></p>
<div>
<div>
<blockquote><p>If the Zeiss Milvus 135mm f/2 Lens featured autofocus, it would be a must-have lens for all serious kits. As it does not, the applications for this lens are more limited. Still, if a manual focus lens works for your 135mm application, this lens is a very highly recommended solution.</p>
<p>The image quality coming from this lens is so high that, it seems to me that Zeiss could have used yellow paint, emblazoned it with the Otus brand name and charged double the price. Still, the price is not low, the lens is not light and AF is not featured, but otherwise, this is another drool-worthy Zeiss lens. It is hard not to love this lens. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Zeiss-135mm-f-2-Milvus-Lens.aspx">Read the complete review</a></p></blockquote>

Samyang 10mm f/2.8 - powdery focus ring?

My Samyang 10mm arrived a few days ago and after unboxing the first one, I had to send it back because Amazon delivered it to me with the wrong mount (for Sony E) instead of Canon EOS. What I noticed though, was that the focus ring had some sort of white/greyish powder on it - never seen something like this on any of my lenses (see picture). I thought this might be an outlier.

Then, shortly after they quickly managed to send me another one - this time it was for Canon EOS like I have ordered it. I've tested the lens and it isn't decentered, but also has this kind of powdery focus ring. What is that? Is it some sort of protection for the rubber part??

Anyways, I gently tried to remove the "powder" (or whatever that is) with an eyeglass cleaning tissue and other utensils, but it is very persistent and hard to remove. At some point it got better (cleaner), but I cannot fully remove it. The lens seems to be brand new and not used (no dust on lenses, no scratches, superb optical performance, undamaged packaging) - so this white coating must be something intentionally applied by Samyang in-factory. Maybe someone can explain it to me.

Cambo Lens Adapter for Fuji GFX50s and Canon EF Lenses

HTML:
<p>Cambo announces a new lens adapter to fit Canon lenses to the Fujifilm GFX50s.</p>
<p>The CA-GFX will be the third Canon lens adapter that Cambo have manufactured and marketed for camera movement. Having successfully adapted Canon lenses to the Cambo ACTUS (ACB-CA) and more recently the WIDE series camera (WRES-CA.) It was a natural transition to manufacture the adapter as it gives many photographers the option of using their existing lenses with the latest mirrorless, large sensor, Fujifilm GFX50s (CA-GFX.</p>
<p><strong>Cambo CA-GFX Adapter</strong>

The CA-GFX adapter fits directly to the bayonet of the GFX camera body and the lens aperture is controlled electronically when dialling in the required f-stop. As there is no direct connection between lens and body, there is no data received; aperture, auto-focus or EXIF, from the lens.</p>
<p><strong>Why make this lens adapter?</strong>

The Fujifilm GFX50s sensor measures 33x44mm and Canon lenses such as the 17mm T-SE and 24mm T-SE have very large image circles, they will cover the sensor size and will enable the photographer to apply movement.</p>

The CA-GFX (Product code: 99070301) is available from your local dealer.</p>

PowerShot SX60 HS Replacement Finally Coming? [CR1]

HTML:
We’re told that a new SX PowerShot camera will be announced relatively soon. We’re hoping that it’ll finally be a replacement to the PowerShot SX60 HS.</p>
<p>As soon as we find out more, we’ll pass it on.</p>
<p>The new Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM will be announced on April 5, 2017 (depending on where you are on the planet), and that would seem like a logical time to announce a PowerShot camera.</p>
<span id="pty_trigger"></span>

An Update on the Canon EOS 6D Mark II [CR3]

HTML:
There has been an announcement date of April 21, 2017 for the Canon EOS 6D Mark II floating around the web, we have confirmed that this is not accurate.</p>
<p>We’re still hearing late Q2 or early Q3 of 2017 for an announcement and ship date.</p>
<p>I only recall one DSLR ever being announced for NAB, and that was the EOS-1D C, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise.</p>
<p>For the moment, we know that Canon will be announcing the EOS 5D Mark IV C-Log update, along with at least one Cinema EOS lens for NAB 2017.</p>

Popular Photography Mag shuttered

Most folks on this site won't miss the demise of popular photography magazine. First published in 1937 it was an inspiration to many of us film photographers in the early days. Like many things it has gone by the wayside in this modern digital world.

Replace 2 with a 1 :)

Hi Folks.
I have a 7DII, a 7D and a 5D. The 5D is my gateway drug to full frame, but does not live in a bag and is often toted around loose.
I walked past the local camera shop last week and saw they had a 1DsIII body in the window for a very good price due to it was missing the box, instruction manual, USB cable, USB cable protector and the little round rubber cover for the extension system terminal. It did have 2 batteries, the double charger and the strap included. Is there anything else that should have been in the box and is not on the included list?
The shop say that they believe the camera has about 16,000 shots on it which I can believe as it looks like new plus I am a frequent visitor in the shop and trust that they believe it. I now own this camera.
Other cameras that are out there for what I paid look like they have been dragged down a gravel road, paint missing, scratches to body and screens, polished rubber grips etc.

Is there anyone here that would not sell a 7D and 5D to replace them with the 1DsIII based on the technical ability of the body? Why not (don't say weight :) )?
Weight does not come in to it for me as I weighed my 7DII with grip and 2 batteries and the 1DsIII and the 1D is Less than 4oz heavier than the 7D so pretty much a moot point.
I have already given it a work out at the Goodwood Members Meeting, I put nearly another 1000 clicks on it (after saying I would try to cut back on the number of shots I have to go through!) and I am thoroughly impressed with the beast.
I did find one thing I missed, auto ISO, but I did find a work around for that by using Safety Shift enable ISO.
I also found one very handy tool, register settings to * button which meant I could have a slow shutter speed (for panning shots) set up in Tv and have a faster shutter shutter speed (to freeze the action) on demand on the * button, most useful.

Cheers, Graham.

Zeiss to Update CP.2 Lenses Over the Coming Months [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that Zeiss will be updating some or all of their CP.2 compact cinema lenses over the coming months. The current CP.2 lineup consists of 11 prime lenses and have fallen behind other series’ of lenses in their lineup.</p>
<p>It would be logical to think Zeiss will be announcing these updates at NAB next month.</p>

Three Canon Lens Masters Pick Their Favourite Lenses

HTML:
<a href="https://www.dpreview.com/articles/3376563810/we-asked-3-canon-lens-masters-to-name-their-first-and-favorite-designs">DPReview</a> asked three Canon lens masters at the Utsunomiya lens factory to name their favourite lens designs (as well as their first). One of the responses may surprise you.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Masato Okada: Deputy Chief Executive of Image Communication Products and Operation

</strong><em>Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM – “For me I’d have to say the 11-24mm F4L USM, because when launched, it allowed the widest angle possible on a full frame with no distortion.”</em></li>
<li><strong>Kenichi Izuki: Plant Manager</strong>

<em>Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM – “My favorite, which I truly remember because it was so hard to design, was the original Canon 70-200 F2.8 L USM non-IS.”</em></li>
<li><strong>Shingo Hayakawa: Deputy Chief Executive of Image Communication and Products Operations</strong>

<em>Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II – “… if I were to narrow it down, my choice would be a lens that came out in 2012: the Canon 24-70mm F2.8L II USM.”</em></li>
</ul>
<p>I’m not a lens engineer/designer, but I to have my favourite Canon lenses based on design, usability and performance. For me, my absolute favourite Canon lens is the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM.</p>
<p>What’s your favourite Canon lens?</p>

Upcoming Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 M IS STM Will Have Macro Illumination

HTML:
We’re told by a new source that the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 M IS STM is going to have a macro illumination feature like the <a href="https://bhpho.to/2nD7aho">EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM</a>. We can also safely assume that “M” means macro.</p>
<p>When we <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-s-35mm-f2-8-m-is-stm-coming-april-5-2017/">first confirmed this lens</a>, we weren’t 100% sure what the “M” meant in the lens description, but I think it’s safe to say this is legitimate and goes along with what a lot of people have been thinking.</p>
<p>The lens is still slated for an announcement on (or around) April 5, 2017.</p>
<p><em>Thanks for the tip…</em></p>

C-Log Addition to Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Not Just a Firmware Update?

HTML:
We’re continually receiving more information about C-Log being added to the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<p>We’re now told by a separate source that adding C-Log to your EOS 5D Mark IV may require a quick trip to Canon service, and that it’s not as simple as just a firmware update. There is no mention whether or not this will be a service you will have to pay for or not, or if future EOS 5D Mark IV cameras will ship with the feature.</p>
<p>While we cannot confirm this information at present, we wouldn’t be surprised.</p>
<p>We haven’t received any more information about any other features coming to the EOS 5D Mark IV with this upgrade. We also haven’t heard if the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will also get this upgrade.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Review: Irix 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone

HTML:
Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Irix 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone wide angle lens. Your options for wide angle prime lenses continues to grow with these new Irix lenses as well as the upcoming <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/sigma-14mm-f1-8-dg-hsm-introducing-the-worlds-first-and-only-f1-8-ultra-wide-angle-lens/">Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art series lens</a>. This Irix lens appears to be a good once, especially when the “low” cost is considered.</p>
<p><strong>Bryan Says:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>While reviewing this lens, I was not being overwhelmingly convinced of its value proposition. But, when I started putting the Irix 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Lens up against the comparables, I began to see it in a different light. It is not a perfect lens, and I would especially like to see the wide open corner image quality improved. But for the price, its value is easy to recognize. Getting a weather-sealed aluminum-magnesium lens barrel with decent image quality for a relatively low price puts this lens squarely on the consideration list. And for a new lens manufacturer, that is an impressive feat. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Irix-15mm-f-2.4-Blackstone-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

C-Log Coming to EOS 5D Mark IV Confirmed [CR3]

HTML:
Yesterday we reported we were pretty sure that the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV would get C-Log via a <del>firmware update</del> (<a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/c-log-update-to-canon-eos-5d-mark-iv-not-just-a-firmware-update/">service center update</a>) that will likely be announced at NAB next month. We can now confirm that to a certainty that it’s coming. However, we do not have a release date for the firmware.</p>
<p>We’re now asking sources if the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II will see a similar firmware update, we’ll report back on that as soon as we’re able to.</p>
<p>There has been another suggestion that Canon has been actively looking at ways to “improve” the 4K video capture crop on the EOS 5D Mark IV. We cannot confirm at this time if we’re going to see that in a firmware update.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

Review: TDP reviews the Irix 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone

Review from TDP on Irix's Blackstone version of their 15mm prime:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Irix-15mm-f-2.4-Blackstone-Lens.aspx

Even more vignetting than what LT recently showed -- 4.5 stops!

By my untrained eye, I'm seeing sharper results from the 16-35 f/2.8L III than this one. Not sure that's an indictment of the Irix or just a compliment to what is a shockingly sharp zoom.

Also, perhaps troublingly, TDP's single coma shot (just a one-off, also see LT's standard method) was not exactly a winner. ::) I defer to the astro camp on how bad that really looks to them.

Cameras must be put in checked luggage on international flights

Just reading this now, but it would appear for some international slights, camera gear, laptops, etc. can't be brought into an airline cabin as a carry-on any longer. Gear would have to be put into checked bags:

https://techcrunch.com/2017/03/20/us-authorities-ban-electronics-larger-than-a-phone-from-flights-from-13-countries/

I'm sure we'll hear about this on the news soon as this just dropped, but FYI if you are traveling.
