More Than $200,000 in Lenses Stolen from Veydra Optics

Review: LensTip (finally) reviews the 24-105 f/4L IS II

From LT:
http://www.lenstip.com/index.php?test=obiektywu&test_ob=498

LT didn't come to the same 'it's not much better than the Mk I' conclusion that many others have:

"In my humble opinion releasing such a lens was an excellent Canon move. They provided a slightly weaker image quality in the frame centre compared to the predecessor and the Sigma A 24–105 mm f/4 DG OS HSM but the difference is often so insignificant that it would be hard to notice it in real life photos. However, we got a lot in return – and I really mean a lot. Firstly, a better image quality on the edges of the frame, lower chromatic and spherical aberration, lower distortion and vignetting plus a very good performance against bright light. As a result you can enjoy a universal lens with a sensible aperture fastness, equipped with a fast, accurate autofocus and an efficient image stabilization unit – a device practically without any serious flaws."

Review: Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sport Lens

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports Lens. At $5999 the new Sigma seems like a good deal, until you consider that you can buy a Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II refurbished from Canon for under $7000 on occasion. I think that alone makes this lens a hard sell to its target audience.</p>
<p><strong>From TDP</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports Lens takes one into the big leagues of sports and wildlife photography at a fraction of the price of the previous options, those by Canon and Nikon.</p>
<p>Overall, this lens is a really nice one. The build quality appears military-grade, ready for heavy duty outdoor use. The features list is about as long as they get and adequate accessories are included. Though some focus shift is present, the image quality coming from this lens – especially when used wide open at f/4 – is ready for a 2-page spread or a wall-sized cutout and the background blur that 500mm f/4 can produce practically cuts out the subject in-camera. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sigma-500mm-f-4-DG-OS-HSM-Sports-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>We’re looking forward to seeing more reviews of the latest Sigma supertelephoto lens.</p>

Canon Planning to Gain More Market Share - Strategy Conference 2017

Canon Planning to Gain More Market Share - Strategy Conference 2017
March 6, 2017

These slides are from legitimate url source: http://www.canon.com/ir/housin2017/housin2017ceo-e.pdf

Quite interesting to read.

"This presentation contains forward-looking statements with respect to future results, performance and achievements...".

It includes:

Establish a new production system to achieve a cost-of-sales ratio of 45% p/y

Reinforce and expand new businesses while creating future businesses

Restructure global sales network in accordance with market changes

Enhance R&D capabilities through open innovation

Complete the Three Regional Headquarters management system capturing world dynamism
It discusses:
 • Medical business restart with Toshiba
 • Industrial Equipment
 • Network (read security& Surveillance) hardware & software solutions -> it's annoying to read "Safety" - instead of "Surveillance" :-(((
 • Further Digital Printing market share expansion
 • OLED
 • ILC and LaserJet market Share expansion via new products
 • In-house manufacturing and automations + "proprietary tech accumulation" = reduced production costs

What do you think about it? ;-)

Zhongyi Mitakon 20mm f/2.0 4.5X Super Macro Lens

The day I saw the news of this lens' availability on this site, I immediately ordered a copy of this macro lens. I've been chasing a decent snowflake photo for years, and I hadn't ever gotten one, and I hoped this lens would help me do it.

Well, the stars finally aligned, and we had decent snowflakes today! Here's my shot!

As it was, it was slowly melting away. I took a few shots of this flake, and noticed it was a little smaller each time. The other tiny flecks on the image are part of my wife's minivan's paint job :) I was looking all over her car for a single flake I could photograph and finally found one.

Review: Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II

HTML:
Photography Blog has completed their extensive review of the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II, a decent follow-up to the popular Canon PowerShot G9 X.</p>
<p><strong>From Photography Blog</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Although owners of the original Canon PowerShot G9 X aren’t going to be too excited by the improvements on offer, the new Mark II does represent a minor step forward for Canon’s most pocket-friendly compact camera, particularly in its operational speed.</p>
<p>In summary, the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II adds just enough new features (just) to make it worth considering as a truly take-anywhere pocket camera. <a href="http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/canon_powershot_g9_x_mark_ii_review/">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>After reading the review, it seems the camera is quite good, but you may find more value in the original PowerShot G9 X, especially after its <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/price-drop-canon-powershot-g9-x-399-reg-529/">recent big price drop</a>.</p>

First Impressions: Canon EOS Rebel T7i/800D

HTML:
Photography Blog had the opportunity to spend some time with the recently announced Canon EOS Rebel T7i/800D. This camera was announced alongside the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-announces-the-eos-77d/">EOS 77D DSLR</a> and <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-announces-the-eos-m6/">EOS M6 mirrorless camera</a>.</p>
<p>The Rebel line is always pretty safe and quite a capable performer. It doesn’t look like the EOS Rebel T7i/800D is going to tarnish that legacy.</p>
<p><strong>From Photography Blog:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Given the chance to test the camera in challenging low-contrast light conditions, we can report that our first impressions are very good. Image quality is respectable under tough conditions and excellent when the light entering the camera is maximised.</p>
<p>An excellent feature set in a lightweight body with simple layout means the EOS 800D is likely to entice beginners to further explore the world of interchangeable lens cameras. <a href="http://www.photographyblog.com/news/canon_eos_800d_first_impressions_review/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+photographyblog+PhotographyBLOG">Read the initial impressions review</a></p></blockquote>

Poor Image Quality at Infinity with 35mm Typical?

Maybe a crazy question, but I sold a 35L a couple years ago because I found it a little soft when focus was at infinity, even when stopped down. It was amazing for closer work, I assumed it was just the copy I had.

Now I'm experiencing it worse with a 35 f/2 IS, albeit wide open. Using it on the sideline of volleyball I find I get sharp results on the near side when AF keeps up, but on the far side of the court the subject distance is in the range where infinite focus kicks in. When focused on subjects that are more than 5 meters away (Lightroom plugin info), the next court adjacent to the one I'm working appears better focused than the subject. This is for indoor gyms, so ISO 1600-3200 is typical.

Do I have a lens that requires repair, or is this a typical problem? I'd post examples, but I'm reluctant as they images are of a lot of people's children under 16.

Fact from Fantasy?

Most of the gear I own is in the "big seller" category: lenses and bodies familiar to many CR members, reviewed by popular and generally reputable review sites and individuals.

However, I recently picked up a Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO OS. The lens was rarely reviewed; despite popping up quite a bit in Google, most of the "reviews" are rehashes of the original press release. By coincidence, just in the past day or two a new thread was started about this lens, the first discussion of it in years on CR. The OP was asking for those with personal experience for a comparison between the Sigma and the Canon 180mm f/3.5.

What surprises me, now that I have a piece of gear relatively few people buy, try, or know anything about, is how much completely wrong info is so quickly passed around. Ok, I'm naïve. But the number of posts with fragments of poorly remembered bits of reviews or rumors or just complete BS is incredible.

So, I'm asking other CR members to talk about HOW DO YOU SEPARATE FACT FROM FANTASY (aka BS) when making gear purchasing decisions? Many of us are now living in areas hundreds of miles from the nearest camera shop.

Thanks!

Updated 2017 Canon Roadmap

HTML:
<p>2017 isn’t shaping up to being a big year for Canon, but there are going to be a fair number of popular announcements this year. Below is what we can confirm is coming in 2017, even if we cannot confirm exactly when things are coming.</p>
<p>We also touch on a few things that won’t be coming this year, in case you’re on the fence about a purchase.</p>
<p><strong>DSLRs</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Canon EOS 6D Mark II</strong>

<em>This is the most anticipated DSLR from Canon this year. We expect to see it in late Q2/early Q3</em></li>
<li><strong>Canon EOS Rebel SL2</strong>

<em>The smallest DSLR in the lineup will get a refresh in 2017. We expect it to be specced pretty close to the EOS Rebel T7i.</em></li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Lenses</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS</strong>

<em>This is a highly anticipated lens and we expect it to come around some time in Q3 of 2017.</em></li>
<li><strong>Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 M IS STM</strong>

<em>We haven’t confirmed the focal length of this lens yet, but it will be announced on or around April 5, 2017. We’ve also been told that it’ll have a unique feature for an EF-S lens.</em></li>
<li><strong>Canon 135mm</strong>

<em>There is some kind of 135mm lens coming in 2017, we just don’t know an awful lot about it at this time. This one may evolve some and I think it’s likely a Q4 announcement.</em></li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Cinema EOS</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Canon Cinema EOS CXXX Camera</strong>

<em>A new Cinema EOS camera below the EOS C300 Mark II is coming in 2017. It will not be called the C100 Mark III. This won’t be ready for NAB next month, so we expect a Q3 or Q4 announcement.</em></li>
<li><strong>Canon Cinema lenses

</strong><em>We expect to see at least one prime cinema lens announced for NAB next month. There may also be an anamorphic lens announced some time in 2017.</em></li>
</ul>
<p><strong>What’s not coming?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO IS</strong>

<em>We were told it was possible this lens would come in late 2017, but we can confirm that it’s not. Perhaps we’ll see it at Photokina in 2018?</em></li>
<li><strong>Canon EOS-1D C Mark II</strong>

<em>It’s not coming this year, and we don’t think it ever will.</em></li>
<li><strong>Canon EOS 5DS & Canon EOS 5DS R</strong>

<em>There will be no new high megapixel camera in 2017.</em></li>

180mm Macro Lenses - Canon vs. Sigma

I'm looking to buy a 180mm macro lens and would like to hear comments from anyone with experience with both the Canon and Sigma versions regarding relative performance and picture quality. The reviews for the Sigma appear to be generally positive and it is a much newer design, but probably lacks weather sealing (although I don't expect to be trying to do macro photography in the rain). It's also 50% heavier than the Canon, but is the same weight as my Canon 100-400 V2, and I don't have any problem with that weight - will probably be on a tripod most of the time anyway. Not sure if OS is of much use when handheld at MFD. Also not sure F2.8 is an advantage for macro as depth of field is already too narrow at close focus, but I suppose there is an advantage in having more light for focusing. In Canada, the Sigma would cost me about $315 more than the Canon (more if I buy any filters due to the larger filter size). I only intend to use the lens for macro, not as a telephoto prime. I would be using it on a 5D III. The Sigma in Canada is a special order, meaning I can't return it.

New Canon EF-S Wide Angle Prime Announcement Coming April 5

HTML:
We <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/the-next-lens-from-canon-will-be-an-ef-s-prime/">told you back in January</a> that Canon would be announcing a new EF-S prime lens soon.</p>
<p>We now know the lens is expected to be announced on April 5, 2017 in North America and that it is indeed a new wide angle EF-S prime lens.</p>
<p>Unfortunately we’ve been told two different focal length for this lens and we’re trying to confirm which is correct. We’ll let you know as soon as we know. We’re hoping for a lens around 10mm for APS-C cameras (though that’s highly unlikely).</p>

Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 on Canon EOS 500 film body

Here's a curly one! My daughter is doing photography at school and needs to use a film camera. Weird! We got a second hand EOS 500 film camera from the 1990's with a dull Sigma zoom. We thought a nice bright prime with AF would be an improvement so got a new $70 Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8, a clone of the Canon Nifty Fifty. You could think of it as the Thrifty Fifty!

The lens checked out fine on my 7DII, 5DIV and 1DX, but doesn't work on the old EOS 500. All my EF lenses work fine on the EOS 500. AF works well, but when you hit the shutter, the mirror flips up but that's the end of it. An error message BC shows on the screen....but not the more usual err BC.

Has anyone had compatibility issues with EF glass on Canon film bodies?

No EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R Replacements in 2017 [CR2]

HTML:
We get asked a fair bit about the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R and whether or not we can expect replacements any time soon. We’re told that we won’t be seeing a replacement for either camera in 2017, but that there is obviously plans for another high megapixel DSLR.</p>
<p>We do think these cameras will likely be replaced by a single model in the second half of 2018.</p>
<p>Canon has shown us a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/demo-of-canon-250mp-sensor-and-turbulence-removal-feature/">250mp CMOS sensor</a> as well as a <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-developing-8k-cinema-eos-camera-120mp-dslr-8k-display/">120mp CMOS sensor DSLR</a>, with a variation of the latter being more likely to end up in a consumer DSLR. We have no information as to what the megapixel count would be for an EOS 5DS Mark II, but it will likely be a significant jump from the current 50.6mp.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

parts for Canon 180mm f/3.5 macro

Anyone have tips for getting parts for a 180mm f/3.5 macro? I've lost one of the screws (and proprietary recessed washers) that hold the tripod ring in place. It's one of four screws on the outside of the barrel under the ring, and the screws work loose over time.

The Canon Parts store no longer has that screw (and haven't since 2003 they say). No luck with B&H, Midwest Camera, Lensrentals, etc. I looked for used broken lenses, but no luck there either.

Can't bring myself to pay for a new 180mm when all I need is one silly little screw and washer of just the right size.

Thanks!

Review: Zeiss Milvus 18mm f/2.8 ZE by TDP

HTML:
Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of the Zeiss Milvus 18mm f/2.8 ZE lens. This is a great option for anyone looking for a wide angle prime lens, especially landscape and interior photographers.</p>
<p><strong>From TDP:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>If you want the best image quality possible at 18mm, few lenses surpass this one. If you want the best-built 18mm lens, perhaps no lens surpasses this one. The beautifully-designed Zeiss Milvus 18mm f/2.8 Lens reliably delivers greatness and if an 18mm manual focus lens meets your needs, this lens deserves a spot on your short list. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Zeiss-18mm-f-2.8-Milvus-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>I’ve added the Zeiss Milvus 18mm f/2.8 ZE to my kit as I found the amazing Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 ZE to be too wide at times. I also appreciate the smaller size and the ability to easily use filters on the Milvus 18mm f/2.8.</p>

Insta360 Air Arrives in US and Europe, Turns Android Phones into 360° VR Cameras

HTML:
<em>Real-Time Image Stabilization on the Way</em></p>
<p><strong>SHENZHEN, Mar. 7, 2017 </strong>– The Insta360 Air, a smartphone add-on that instantly turns Android phones into 360-degree cameras, is now on sale across the United States and Europe.</p>
<p>“The Air is what we’re all about — cutting-edge technology that empowers people to capture and share experiences just the way they live them,” said J.K. Liu, CEO and co-founder of Insta360. “We can’t wait to see what the world’s Android users create.”</p>
<p>Android and iOS account for more than 90 percent of the world’s smartphone users, and the release of the Air means all of them can now enjoy seamless 360-degree photography and live-streaming. The Insta360 Nano, launched last year, offers a plug-and-play 360 experience to iPhone users.</p>
<p>The Insta360 Air’s simple, intuitive design makes capturing and sharing 360-degree content easier than ever. After connecting via USB Type-C or Micro-USB port, the Air uses a smartphone’s display as its viewfinder, allowing users to capture 360-degree stills and videos with the Air’s dual fisheye lenses and camera-interface app.</p>
<p><strong><a href="https://bhpho.to/2lXWS6O">Insta360 Air is available at B&H Photo</a></strong></p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>With real-time image stitching and integrated live-streaming support for YouTube and other platforms, users can broadcast immersive experiences to the world or share 360-degree content to friends on a host of popular social media — including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Messenger — directly from the app interface. Users can explore content on a screen or through a VR headset for an even more immersive experience.</p>
<p>The Insta360 Air experience isn’t limited to mobile. The Air also serves as a 360-degree webcam on Skype and other video-chat applications after connecting to a PC’s USB 2.0 or 3.0 port. 360-degree webcam support for Macs will also be introduced in a future update.</p>
<p>The Insta360 Air captures 3K photos (3008 X 1504 pixels) and 2.5 K video (2560 X 1289 pixels) at 30 frames per second. Weighing only 26.5 grams and with a diameter smaller than a ping-pong ball, the Air is also the most portable consumer 360-degree camera on the market.</p>
<p><strong>Real-time image stabilization coming soon </strong></p>
<p>Insta360 is committed to providing ongoing support to both devices and users well after purchase. Air users can expect regular updates to the Insta360 Air app and camera firmware. Among the most-exciting updates on the horizon for the Air is the planned addition of an all-new feature, real-time image stabilization.</p>
<p>The advanced image-stabilization technology corrects unwanted vibrations and sudden directional changes as they happen, letting users capture smooth and steady live streams and video.</p>
<p>The technology will mean a vastly improved experience for viewers using an immersive VR headset. And by reducing the variation between adjacent frames of a live-stream or video, it also offers big bandwidth savings. Real-time image stabilization is set to be released via app update in the coming weeks, and Insta360 Nano users can expect the feature as well.</p>
