AC-Foto - Advent calendar

Hi all,

the big german online shop AC-Foto does, as last year, a advent calendar "promotion".
Every day, some article(s) are drastically reduced in price. Last year it was almost exclusively canon gear. All the high end stuff could be had for considerable discounts (1D series, 5D, 6D, all the supertelephoto lenses, etc). Sometimes also other stuff like backpacks is reduced.

Today they started off with massive price reductions on the 300 2.8 II and the 500 4 II (reduced by 1349 and 1249€, respectively!)
https://www.ac-foto.com/onlineshop/v3/?s=advent

and no, I'm not affiliated with them^^
But if you are looking for some specific canon gear that might be your chance (crossing my fingers for the 16-35 III)

DXOMark: Sony A99 II sensor is worse than the A7R II, D800E, D810, K-1

The new horsepower-spec overloaded A99 II -- which I thought had the A7R II sensor in it -- apparently laid an egg in sensor testing:

http://www.thephoblographer.com/2016/12/01/dxomark/#.WEBTt5J_3-8

Question 1: If it has the A7R II sensor in it and a year's newer internals to process the data, shouldn't we be getting the same (or slightly better high ISO) results as the A7R II?

Question 2: How the hell did PB get this data? It's not public yet.

PhotoZone Review: EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM II

The 24-105L II tested on both 50MP and 21 MP:

http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/995-canon24105f4ismk2?start=1

And, like at TDP, the Mk I slightly outresolves the Mk II. When compared on the 21 MP rig (5D2), the Mk I is a hair better.

"Honestly, we were a little shocked by these results. The first tested sample also showed a higher than usual optical decentering. Thus we repeated the exercise with a 2nd sample. This one was well centered (albeit still back-focusing like hell) but not really better."

Distortion was improved on the 24mm end from that staggering 5% (Mk I) to 3.2% (Mk II). For perspective, the 24-70 f/2.8L II was 2.8% and the 24-70 f/4L IS was 2.4% at their site, which they consider 'moderate' distortion for such a FL range of lens.

But evidence continues to mount that this lens does not clearly one-up its predecessor like prior 'II' and 'III' sort of sequels.

Review: Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM by DPR

HTML:
DPReview has completed their review of the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM, and have come away impressed.</p>
<p>From DPReview</p>
<blockquote><p>This is the best 35mm F1.4 prime currently available. On performance overall, it leaves all-comers floundering in its wake with outstanding image quality, especially at F1.4, and extra-robust build. Some rivals come close optically, but none offers a total package to match the Canon 35mm F1.4L USM MkII. <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-35mm-f1-4-ii">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Canon 1DX MK II - Moving the AF Point instantly

Hello everyone,
I recently picked up a 1Dx MK II to replace the MK I Version and I can't find a certain AF Function.
With the MK I, one was able to move the AF Point instantly by simply using the small joystick. Now with the MK II I have to press the AF Selection Button first to move the AF Point which slows me down every time. The User manual wasn't helpful on this topic and I hope someone here can tell me which settings need to be changed to move the AF Point with the Joystick anytime.

Cheers,
Flux

Canon 100 2.8 IS Macro L or Tamron 85 1.8?

In the name of minimalism I'm going to swap out my Canon 85 1.8 for either the Canon 100L Macro or Tamron 85 1.8 for two reasons - so that all of my main lenses use the same 67mm filters and to maybe get an image quality bump. The image quality thing could potentially be a jump; not sure, but it'll be cool to get something new regardless.
The purpose, on my Canon 70D, would be portraits (#1), sports (mostly running races), stage performances (I normally use my 200 2.8, but sometimes 85 works) and general purpose.
Is there a "better" choice between the Canon Macro and the new Tamron? One factor is that I don't care much about macro.
Many thanks.

Not another "bag" question! My M is growing.

Sorry all. There was a very long thread about "How Do You Carry Your M" a while back. But now I've moved up a bit in size. Still have my FF kit and too many lenses, but getting more use out of the M3 which, along with the EVF and the L-Plate, is a bit bigger than the M1 kit.

So just this past week, I carried the M3, EVF, ef-m 22, ef-m 15-55, and 3 batteries in a Mirrorless Mover 10. Heck, with this bag, if I really over stuff it,I'll add the ef-m to ef adapter (you know, the one WITH the tripod adapter ;) )and a 40mm pankake. That is not pretty but it sort of works. Without the adapter and the 40, this bag works well quite well.

But I just got crazy and ordered the ef-m 11-22 (the 22 was just not wide enough for some of the shots and I know I could take this and leave the 22 at home but I also like the f/2.8 ). I am thinking a Mirrorless Mover 20 should work. I really want my small kit to stay small. Am I correct in this assumption?

Audubon Eagle release

EDIT: I originally was going to post this to... birds in flight.. made some error... and whoops.. it asked for a subject... didnt realize I started a new post.... a little rusty at this...
I meant it to go with the big pile....
///////////////

refurbished ... by Audubon - Portland Oregon ... May 12
001, 001a are the bird leaving the box..cropped
01-06 flyover
5D3
didnt have the 1Dx2 ... shot jpg to get fast enough
/////

now the 1Dx2 runs RAW continuously.. a slight improvement..ha!

note: I just got the 100-400 ii and it was not calibrated.. micro-adjusted
it DID need a slight tweak.. which I did later....
I saw this in the shots right away...

that lens and the new 35L ii are some of Canon's best work lately...

I see that for the post body the shots compress a lot... click on them and they are a lot sharper...

MP-E 65mm - High Difficulty Level

Man! Am I equal parts excited and frustrated by this lens!

I've read the reviews saying how difficult it is to use this lens at higher magnifications, reading that the viewfinder gets darker and small movements are massively exaggerated.

I thought I was prepared. lol I fooled myself ;D

I've now decided to work with magnifications no higher than 2.5X until I have worked out the muscle memory needed to wield the camera but I'd much appreciate some advise if anybody is willing to teach me.

My subject matter are insects, shot handheld like I do with my 100L.

And BIG respect to those of you who have taken pin sharp photos of live insects at 5X magnification

Thanks everyone

RingType USM vs. STM/NanoUSM

Which one do you prefer and think to be better?

  • I prefer Ring-type USM as it supports Full Time Manual focusing.

    Votes: 18 94.7%
  • I'm using my camera in A+ mode only so I don't really care.

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • I'm shooting videos many times so I prefer STM/NanoUSM.

    Votes: 1 5.3%

In my opinion the Focus by Wire technology with the Initial focus reset "feature" is good for videographers and A+ mode users only. For still and especially for macro photographers the Ring-type USM motor is much better since it supports Full Time Manul focusing.
As AF doesn't always work in macro photography if you want to go beyond lifesize magnification the FTM feature is a must for me. I think Canon should release EF-V lenses for videographers with FBW and EF(-S) lenses for still photographers with the Ring-type USM technology.

Opinions: bellows for M39/M42 lenses with 5D? good bad ugly?

I want to use some M39 and M42 mount lenses for macro-stacking with a 5D2 body. I am looking for pros/cons on various options. The main question is availability of various adapters. Auto functions are of no concern to me, and Tilt/Shift is not important at all. And, cheaper is better, all other things being equal.

Canon FD bellows: it's Canon but not sure about M39 to FD and FD to Eos adapters.
Nikon PB4/5/6: Lots of Nikon adapters out there. Not sure about pros and cons of 4/5/6. Prices are quite different and on high end compared to other options.
Contax: Have a C/Y to eos adapter, but M39 to C/Y seems rather rare.
Minolta: M39 to Minolta may be an issues, Minolta to Eos should be straight forward.
Novoflex: Quality of bellows themselves? I think they come in EOS mounts, so no issues there.
Olympus: Not sure about M39 to OM adapters.
Arca 4x5": Getting a AS lens board for M39 should be easy (or could be ordered from Grimes), but attaching the SLR to the Graflock back may be tricky. Upside, I have 3 Arca bellows and all the trimmings.

Thanks for any input!
Irony is, I had a OM and a C/Y bellows, but sold them both. Note to self: don't sell odd ball photo equipment.

Canon 5D3 sensor overheats in video

I can maybe get 10-15 minutes of video recording before my camera shuts down. I shoot mostly live music and do turn the camera off briefly between songs. I also use a 80D and 70D and have no issues there at all but I can see a quality difference with the 5D3. Are all copies having this problem? It is very frustrating to have to change bodies in the middle of a show. i have another friend who has no problems at all.

When I bought the new about three years ago it came with a bad sensor. There were lines all across the image. Canon replaced it but once I started shooting video it has just been endless problems.

Any thoughts here? Thanks in advance, Craig

No New 50mm Lens Coming in 2017 [CR2]

HTML:
<p>Sometimes no news is bad news.</p>
<p>We’re told that Canon is developing a new 50L and working with different apertures, but that no announcement of a new 50L should be expected in 2017. The Canon world is waiting impatiently for a new 50 f/1.4 or a new 50 f/1.2L, but it looks like we’ll be waiting a long while longer.</p>
<p>We haven’t nailed down when the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is going to be announced during the year, but we do wonder if the new lens will lead to a new 50mm f/1.2L and a new 135 f/2L IS?</p>
<p>One interesting bit of information we’ve heard about a new 50mm lens is that Canon is testing an f/1.0 design, which would be quite the followup to the original “classic”. We haven’t seen any patents for such optical formulas yet, but we may over the next year.</p>
<p>We’re expecting 4-5 lens to be announced by Canon next year, starting with the new EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM (woo!).</p>
