Canon 1DXmkII 4K Video jello.

I've recently upgraded to the Canon 1DXmkII and have noticed when filming in 4K the jello issue renders the footage completely unusable. We've been using DSLR's for 7 years now for filming from inside a moving car and have never had any issue's so we were excited to finally move to 4k but the entire footage is jello.
On the latest test we switched to 1080 x 1920 and the footage is perfect, no jello and super stable so does anyone have any answers for the 4K issue?

Phottix Indra500LC with Canon RT

I am a wedding photographer that already uses multiple Canon 600ex flashes. I have also been using a 600 watt battery powered studio strobe by Flashpoint. If feel like bringing a strobe to weddings has made my job much easier and because of the limitations of my current strobe I am looking to upgrade. This strobe looks very interesting to me. Has anyone had the chance to use one yet?

Review: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II by TDP

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the brand new Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II. It looks like it’s a lens with some improvements over the original, such as improved IS, build quality and flare reduction.</p>
<p>However, do not expect it to have the same great sharpness that recent Canon zooms have shown. Afterall, this is a $1099 lens from Canon. I get the feeling that it’s a good upgrade, but not a great one like the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III.</p>
<p><strong>From TDP</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>No, it doesn’t have perfect image quality, but the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens is one of the best general purpose lenses available. It has an extremely useful range of focal lengths in a very-well constructed body that is ready for professional-duty use. It is nicely sized and has a weight that will not quickly wear you down. And, the excellent image stabilization system will make a dramatic difference in some low light situations. The fast, accurate and quiet AF system will not let you down, the overall lens design will delight and the price is not terribly high. As the 24-105 L I fades into history, this is the lens that will take its place. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-4L-IS-II-USM-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

New Kit Lens Coming With New Rebels [CR3]

HTML:
It’s definitely not as exciting as the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-85mm-f1-4l-is-usm-on-the-way-cr3/">upcoming EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM</a>, but Canon will be introducing a new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens with the upcoming EOS Rebel cameras. This will be the first lens introduced in 2017.</p>
<p>Beyond this and the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS, we’re hearing that Canon will introduce another “interesting” lens, though we don’t know what that is at the moment.</p>
<p>Exact announcement dates for the above are still unknown, but we hope to find out soon.</p>

Focusing issue 200 f2.0 L *UPDATE with samples*

Hi guys!

Seems yet again I can't catch a break...

My 200 f2 have a varying focusing issue on the left cross type points, two last rows. I will focus in front more often than not, but I have all sorts of different degrees of sharpness. On the right side and center it locks so fast and so accurate it's insane. My 35 and 85 doesn't have this issue, so it's not the body (or?).

The lens had a perfect sharpness curve in FoCal, same as my other copy. So I shouldn't think it's decentered either.

Anyone else had this issue with any lens and perhaps have a cause for it?

Sony A99 ii, crippled AF video mode!

Dear friends,

i just came across the hands-on review of SLT A-99 ii by Dan Watson, only to be informed that the much anticipated SLT A-99 ii, the camera that many thought that would be the hybrid to come and blow all other cameras out of the water, is simply shot in the foot by Sony itself, by getting an aperture stuck at f/3.5 for video modes with AF!!! You have to take AF off to be able to change aperture!

The camera seems to be quite good (as any camera that "respects" itself should be these days) but, if this is reality for good and not another Sony early firmware glitch, we're facing one of the biggest "fiascos", that has ever been served to videographers during the last years.

Here is the link to the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDcmZ6QKj04

Now, let me see some of our beloved Canon co-users, talking about 1.74 crop factor, MJPEG and CFast card absence...

Wishing all the best for you, your families and all the ones you love, from warm, starry Athens.

Yours
Yiannis A.

camera bag hint please - 1d body plus 200 f2 with extender 2.0

Anyone has a hint what bag i could purchase that would carry the combo in the subject line ?
THis must not store a laptop or any other items but should be large enough to have the body and 200 2.0 plus extender fully attached (ready to use). I need it to protectbthe combo but also to allow to quickly take out and store back this combo. easy to carry (shoulder strip or backpack type)
I normally use my b&w case for the 1dx plus 200 but together with the extender mounted it does not fit in any more.
thx

Real world review of the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 from a birder

"Check out this comprehensive and in-depth real-world review of the latest generation of the famed superzoom from Tamron - the SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 by Tamron Image Master Rey Sta. Ana written with his experiences of the lens in the field during the recently concluded 2nd PPUR International Bird Photography Race in Puerto Princesa, Palawan."

SUMMARY
To sum it up, I believe the new SP 150-600mm Generation 2 or simply G2 is a very significant upgrade over the first generation. The following are my observations in my field test using the lens extensively handheld for several days in an actual Bird Photography race and also in a post event birding tour in the mountains and forests of Palawan.
1. It is definitely sharper as a result because of the upgraded optical performance which means the lens has a higher resolution and more contrast to produce images with great clarity in details.
2. Lens sharpness makes long distance captures usable because details are decent enough despite the distance where aggressive cropping is necessary. This is very common practice in bird photography as the birds are not going to stay in-front of you for close up portraits.
3. The AF System is substantially faster and more accurate. Focusing in low light is definitely a lot quicker faster too. AF works even at F/9.0 using a 1.4X Teleconverter. This is the upgrade that I noticed immediately in my earlier field tests. Birds-in-flight photography is no longer a big challenge for me with this new AF capability.
4. The G2 is no longer susceptible to Chromatic Aberration, Ghosting and flare even when shooting against the light. Shooting against the light is no longer a big problem.
5. Boheh is also softer and more pleasing to the eyes. The lens also creates more accurate colors. It is very useful in creating bird images with accurate plumage colors which is very important in Natural History Photography.
6. A new feature I found very useful during treks is the FLEX ZOOM LOCK mechanism which quickly locks or unlocks the zoom at any position by sliding the zoom ring. Very convenient as we start trekking where I always lock the lens at 150mm to shorten the barrel. A lot easier to walk without the long dangling lens at your side. No more lens creep too.
7. VC (Vibration Control) is more effective and powerful. I was able to create very sharp images at 1/40th sec. equivalent to 4.5 stops of light in a moving paddle boat with two other photographers scrambling to create their images. Proves that VC works very well in low light situations. Very big advantage for Bird Photographers because inadequate light is the norm in forest birding, our favorite birding habitat.
Final verdict, the new Tamron SP 150-600mm G2 is significantly better than the older model in many ways. It is well worth the upgrade and is highly recommended.

600EX-RT as Macro Lights

I'm trying to decide which lighting option to use for photography with an MP-E65 lens. I was contemplating buying an MT-24EX, but I think it was released in 2010 and may get refreshed soon. I already have a few 600EX-RTs (and ST-E3-RT). I would have to buy 2 macro brackets (Wimberley F-2 ??), but those would total less than 1/2 the cost of an MT-24EX (I already have an appropriate lens plate to affix the macro brackets to). However, with the 600EX-RTs I wonder about the ability to dial back the light output sufficiently, diffusion requirements, and the difficulty of aligning them to properly light the subject. Size is also a consideration, but I expect the set-up would always be mounted either on a tripod or some kind of platform. Hopefully someone using the 600EX-RT option will share their experience (even better if they have experience with both MT-24EX and 600EX-RT).

Thanks.

Vignetting can vary with focus

Hi

Thought I'd post this after a conversation with TDP.

I noticed they had the 50STM down as having vignetting at 1.25EV, whilst DxO had measured 2.5~3EV, and I had measured mine as being 2.0EV.

We exchanged files and agreed TDPs measurement was indeed 1.25EV, whilst mine measurement yielded 2.0EV

I was trying to think why this could be when the penny dropped:

The 50STM is a classic 50mm design in that the entire optic moves in and out to focus.

What I realised was that if you're focussed at infinity the optics are very close to the sensor so getting light into the corners is rather difficult, where as at minimum focus distance the optics are well away from the sensor and so the ability to light the corners is much improved.

I therefor re-measured what I got with my lens at both extremes.

I found around 1.5EV vignetting at minimum focus distance and 2.6EV at infinity.

I therefore believe that vignetting numbers need to be given for minimum and maximum focus distance.. many lenses ought to have little difference, but that should not be assumed, it might also explain some of the differences between different testers.

I am yet to check my other lenses.

Noise in the sky?

Hi,

I have a question to video.

In my clips (EOS M, PowerShot S100, G7 MK II) I discovered a strange "Sky noise" at the blue (sunny) sky, but not always. I filmed with ISO 100.
It looks like noise or banding with the colour of brown.

Please find here a few samples of it (please zoom in the picture to see it better):

http://img5.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/samplesyizx85kcv.jpg

What is that? Is it a "Canon problem" (I only have Canons and only saw one clip from another brand which don't had this) or general which all cameras have, like because the video is only 8 bit?

Is there any way to avoid this or fix this later?

Thank you very much in advance.

Julia

Tamron 150-600mm G2 Review by Dustin

Hi, everyone, I had a chance to do a review of the new 150-600 G2 lens last month. I only had it for about six days, so I focused on doing a full frame review and comparing it to the previous generation Tamron 150-600mm. I'm scheduled to get another copy next week and will focus on doing a crop sensor review, comparing with the 100-400L II + 1.4x, and testing the Tamron teleconverters. Here's my existing review for those considering this lens.

Tamron SP 150-600 mk1 with 5D4 in live view

I'm assuming a firmware update is required on the lens but curious if anyone else can recreate this or has had this problem fixed (and if so, what was the confirmed cause):

When using live view video on the 5D4, with the Tamron SP 150-600 (mk1) attached, the 5D4's auto focus does not work (no overlay on LCD, no response to touchscreen, no camera-driven focus on lens). When I manually focus I then experience intermittent bursts of erratic exposure and hallucinogenic colour bursts when bright points of light (from, say, a street light at night) hit the sensor.

When using live view stills on the 5D4, the mirror will not stay locked up, it flips up then back down immediately after you hit start, disabling live view immediately.

FWIW I don't get these issues with my other Tamron lens (15-30 2.8 VC) - the video auto focus isn't *particularly* smooth with that, but everything appears to work as it should.

Pixsy. Anyone use it?

Twitter friend has put me onto it. Essentially you let it scan your Flickr, 500px etc, then it searches the web for your photos, you review any matches, its lawyers put in a claim and any payments are shared 50/50. Sounds simple. Just wondering if its genuine, worth the effort? I've never really hunted for my own photos before, didn't think anyone would try to use them...

Samyang 14mm 2.4 reviews, but where to buy

I see that there are reviews out there for the new Samyang 14mm 2.4.

https://www.ephotozine.com/article/samyang-premium-mf-14mm-f-2-4-lens-review-30229
http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/samyang_premium_mf_14mm_f2_4_review/

Of course, neither of these reviews covers the one thing people most want to know - how well it handles coma. My suspicion though is that it does a very good job since Samyang is one of the few companies that knows how to do this.

They give it a list price of 899 Pounds.

However, I don't see it listed at B&H or elsewhere. Has anyone seen it for sale?

Canon 85 1.8 vs. ?

I know it's early, but if one has let's say the Canon 85 1.8 and shoots mostly at 2.8 would something like the Tamron 85 1.8 or the almost released Sigma 85 1.4 Art have any major advantage at 2.8 and above (smaller aperture/larger number)?
This hypothetical person does really well with the 85 1.8, but also strives to have the best possible lenses (within reason) with minimal gear (nothing that sits in the bag or on the shelf).
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

80D Firmware Wishlist

My only complaint for the 80D is the lack of image review workflow customization options.

From active shooting position on the 6D or 5D series all I need to do is hit the dedicated magnify button (on the 6D) or customized set button (on 5D series) with my right thumb and the camera immediately zooms into 100% at selected focus point (this is via a secondary image review custom setting) you can then just half press the shutter release to banish the image review screen.
1) hit magnify button,
2) hit shutter release
This simple two step process can be completed in no more than 2 seconds with hands never leaving active shooting position. (it may take a second longer on the 5Ds/R where images do not render instantly due to hardware constraints)

With the 80D there are two workflows
Option B: (B for BAD)
1) hit image view
2) hold magnify to gradually zoom in
3) use the direction buttons to pan across the image
This is a 5-6 second process if not longer

Option A: (A for ALMOST AS BAD)
1) hit image view
2) move my left hand away from active shooting (i.e. supporting the lens, if it's a lighter lens) or my right hand (i.e. from the grip, if it is a heavy lens which would be too front-heavy to support via hand-grip alone)
3) Use the touch screen to pinch zoom
4) Use the touch screen to pan across image to the position of the selected AF point in case my pinch zoom was slightly off target
5) move my hand back to the active shooting position
6) half press the shutter release to banish image review
This is a 3-4 second process, and due to moving hands away from shooting position adds risk of missing my next shot.

Proposed firmware update:
Add magnify to set button customization (to essentially add a dedicated magnify button)
Add zoom to selected AF point as option for magnify customization
