HELP for shooting ice rink ASAP!!!!

Just need some quick advice on a last minute engagement shoot i have tonite! I'm shooting in an indoor ice rink for a friend for about an hour or so which i know can be difficult due to the white ice! I have used Kelvin in the past on my past camera bodies but unsure if my 1Dx has this? If so then i would say thats the way to go...but if not should i simply use AWB & shoot in RAW rather than jpeg? Thanks in advance for any help &/or camera settings!!!!

Anyone Replacing their Canon 85 1.8 with the Tamron?

Due to space had to use my Canon 50 1.8 STM for a portrait session and it turned out enormously well. Shocking, in fact, for a $150 lens.
But, whenever possible, I do like that 85mm length and currently have the Canon 1.8. Hardly ever use anything under 2.8 (except for indoor sports in terribly lit gyms). The upcoming Sigma looks incredible, but I really don't need 1.4 and it looks huge. The 50-100 makes a massive amount of sense, but it's also sort of big (although not ruling it out entirely in light of probably sticking with crop).
With that, though, has anyone ever switched from the Canon 1.8 to the new Tamron 1.8 and, if so, were you glad you did?
Thanks.

Fake slow motion shot with 5D

Hey guys,
I made a film a few months back that made use of "fake" slow motion using the 5D mark ii. We had the actors act out the punch in slow motion and sped up certain parts of it in post - I think it turned out pretty good after adding some sound effects!

Check it out: https://youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=pstY01FXR4c
And also check out behind the scenes if you wanna see more :)

Let me know what you think!

85mm f1.8 requires A LOT of contrast to focus.

Hi guys!

I recently bought a 85mm f1.8. I actually like it, to my surprise better than I liked the L, but there's one BIG issue; I needs a lot of contrast to focus. I mean, I can use One Shot in very dark settings and nail focus easily. But faces in normal flat outdoors light and what I consider bright and normal indoor light it just doesn't hit at all. No use to have the faster AF when it doesn't lock at all.

Is this normal with it?

I tried 20 shots of my daughter with a B1 light and not one shot has sharp eyes. I then switched on the modeling light and suddenly everything is sharp and great. Went out with my son an hour or so before sunset and I didn't have a single sharp shot. And again using One Shot and a very contrasty subject in the same light works.

DIY pipe/conduit supports for lighting?

So I recently came across a Kickstarter for couplers/connectors to make things out of EMT conduit. (I'm not here to shill for them so I'm not going to link them; I bet you can find it if you search, or PM me.)

It got me thinking though: does anyone use pipe/conduit to make supports or backdrop holders, etc.? I'm wondering if folks here have tips or tricks for doing such things. What materials do you use? Did you design it to be broken down between sessions or is it always "up"?

It's not nearly as travel-friendly as a traditional three-legged light stand, but possibly more stable and versatile depending on design? Maybe cheaper too. Even a reasonably cheap Impact background support system is over $100.

Or maybe I'm nuts for even considering this stuff. I'm sure you'll let me know if so. :P

70-300 IS USM vs 70-200 F/4L

¿Have you seen the digital picture lenses image comparison between the 70-300 IS USM and the 70-200 F/4L on the 5DS R?

(http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=358&Camera=979&Sample=0&FLI=3&API=1&LensComp=104&CameraComp=979&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=4&APIComp=0)

Wide open at @200 (f/5 for the 70-300 and f/4 for the 70-200), the first one wins. Now im clearly even more confused, since i was supposed to make that little jump expecting some quality upgrade.

Now i think i should jump for the F/4 IS version instead. ¿What do you think?

Sony RX100 Mark V

This has to be one of the best kept secrets within the camera industry this year! I was even beginning to wonder whether Sony was going to update the RX100 line or not.

The RX100 brings Fast Hybrid AF with phase detection from the a6300 and new a6500 to the RX line

http://www.newsshooter.com/2016/10/06/sonys-small-miracle-the-new-rx100-v-brings-phase-detect-af-to-small-sensor-cameras/

On paper at least, it seems that Sony has done it again and maintained the RX100's position as the best pocketable quality camera available today.

The article does not mention the menu and I wonder whether that has been updated as Sony is supposed to be updating their menu system.

I am looking forward to trying this camera.

Specs: 315-point AF, 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens, 1,000fps shooting, 2.36 million dot OLED EVF, 24fps up to 150 shots, 1-inch, 21-megapixel sensor

5d4 soft images/af issue

Hi

I just got my 5d4, and tried it out side by side with my 5d3. I was surprised to see the 5d3 was markedly sharper.

So I thought this must be a afma issue. I set up afma (Spyder lens cal) and tried it out.

I shot with the regular AF, and then using af with live view ......the live view images are razor sharp, the regular af ones are not.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Advice on finding a shoulder bag that fits a Canon 1DX and a 24-70 f2.8 attached

I am looking for the smallest shoulder bag possible, that fits a Canon 1DX with a 24-70 f2.8 lens attached. Of course, it cant be so small that it becomes problematic to got the camera in or out of the bag.. (I do not need room for another lens or flash, just the camera and lens attached.)

I've been looking at Billingham bags, and their largest ones will be big enough, but I am hoping to get away with one of their smaller ones.

Any tips or input on Billingham, or other brands, will be highly appreciated. Thank you!

ExploreCams data updated

Data updated on 10/3 by ExploreCams, who mines internet EXIF data:

(by rank)
https://explorecams.com/stats/top/models

(in fun interactive pinwheel charts)
https://explorecams.com/stats/global

Of note, Sony's not even in the top 20 by camera ranking (of shots posted online), which is a little hard to believe. Any chance Sony folks are getting their EXIF data scrubbed somehow, perhaps by a wifi/bluetooth protocol trying to save a byte or two as it posts to social media?

A Canon Supertelephoto Zoom Lens Coming with EOS 6D Mark II? [CR1]

HTML:
We’re told that the much discussed Canon EF 200-600 f/4.5-5.6 IS (or similar focal range) could possibly be announced alongside the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. All this source did was confirm to us that the new supertelephoto zoom lens will not be an “L”, but should complete quite favourably against the Sigma and Tamron offerings.

The announcement date is unknown, but the latest guess is a February CP+ announcement for the EOS 6D Mark II.

Quirky, yellow dSLR used by press ''tog

I know how everyone loves a wee challenge on here, thought I'd ask for thoughts on the yellow camera body I just spotted amongst the press photographers at the front... What do we reckon it is? Is it a generally available model? I'm thinking it's possibly just another industry standard pro model; that a well-off photographer's paid thousands to have taken apart and customised, ie spray-painted to er, really help express himself through his work...

Thoughts? Feel free to chime in with references to and pictures of other known, quirky mods and custom jobs, I'm surprised we don't really see more of it, considering how much we almost all reeeally know we're likely to cling on to our cameras until they're not worth selling. What else is out there asides from yellow-cam here and DigitalRev's silly/fun auction things?

Oh, I have whatever Canon's last Rebel-type 35mm film camera is; it's amazing, works just like a 300D, light-up LCD screen, great AF etc, but only came in a silvery colour. I had some rubbery-textured blackboard-paint, coated my camera, note the whole thing is like it's coated in black grip! (Rebel T3, maybe? 300X?)

People enjoying sailing, boating, jet skiing etc.

Hi Folks.
I didn't find a post specifically for boats, yachts and similar, so thought I'd try making a long running thread where anyone can post their pictures, like the cars and planes posts.
A few shots of some random people enjoying a sunny day on the water to get it started.

In less than an hour I took these.

Hi Folks.
I didn't know where to put these, I'm guessing here is as good as anywhere as they we're all taken whilst on the hunt for nature photographs.
I had just over an hour to go out for some shots, and got these in that hour on about a 200yard stretch of the local river bank.

1DX mkii vs 5D mk iv

I am considering a new camera and can't decide which way to go. I shoot sports, portraits, night photography, birds, occasional weddings, etc. In other words, a little of everything. I recently rented a 1DX mkii and loved it. I wasn't considering it due to cost, now I'm thinking I can't afford not to get it. Is it that much better than a 5D mk iv? I haven't tried a 5D mk iv yet, hoping to try one over the next couple of weeks. Obviously the 1DX mk ii is better for sports, but I used a 5d mkiii for a while and it was fine for the most part.

Has anyone used both? Should I not even consider the 5D mk iv?

7D Mark II and new 18-135 USM kit? (and other ques's)

Some questions re: 7D Mark II:

Is there (or will there be) a kit with the new 18-135 IS USM? I thought when that lens was announced they said there would be but I don't see it anywhere...

...except on Canon's website where they have it with the WiFi card:

https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/eos-7d-mark-ii-ef-S-18-135mm-is-usm-wi-fi-adapter-kit

However, the price there is puzzling me ($2450.) You can get all three same items, bought separately, for $2140. on B&H right now. Meaning I could get the body and lens for just $2100.

What I'm hoping for is to get a discount as typical with the kit where the body + lens is cheaper than if bought separately. E.g. maybe $1999 or less in this case. But I'm not seeing that option anywhere.

Anybody have thoughts or recall rumors that such a kit will be offered?
