Autumn

Since we're in the season, at least in the northern hemisphere, I thought I'd start a dedicated thread with any and all content related in any way to autumn.

Review: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV by TDP

HTML:
The Digital Picture has completed their review of the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. The review does a good job of covering Dual Pixel RAW and showing you what sort of adjustments you can make in post processing using Canon’s DPP (Lightroom support coming).</p>
<div>
<div>
<blockquote><p>The feature sets included in the 5D-series have enabled them to aptly serve a wide range of photographers’ needs including portraiture, weddings, events, landscapes, nightscapes, architecture, photojournalism, street/documentary photography and even sports. Canon EOS 5D Mark IV continues this tradition, taking performance, image quality and the feature set to new levels. This camera is going to take a lot of pro and amateur kits to the next level. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-IV.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>I think we’ve seen about 30 reviews of the EOS 5D Mark IV, and I have yet to find anyone that has any serious complaints or issues with the new DSLR.</p>

1dx2 video file - odd behavior

I recorded 2 each.....30 min sessions in a club... \
[ edit....hd ...not 4k ]
on 1dx2 cfast 64 gig....
the two files showed 6.6 gig and 6.3 gig...
used cfast reader to copy files to hard drive of laptop windows 8.1
read/played the two files on laptop

...so far so good...

now when I tried to copy those two larger videos to an empty 32gig sd card ...or even BACK to the cfast card ...said not enough space
the smallet test videos copie... and played all around.... everywhere ok...
2 big files no go..
now I copied the 2 ....6 gig files to a spinning usb 3.0 travel drive and ok....
files played from there also...

I dont understan what is up here.. are there some hidden file issues ...ones that dont always get moved?... I seem to hear a voice telling me that...

/////

this is latest 1dx2 with the cfast 'patch' from factory and reader and card are sandisk ...part of premium kit...

///////

I dont need this heartache to come up in the middle of important recording so ..
I need to figure this out...

usually I am on this stuff... but quite puzzled here.

help is welcomed

thanks for your input

Canon 5DIV - Possible Strobe / Flash Defect - Can anyone confirm or deny this?

First let me say Im very impressed with the 5D4. Really incredible camera, even the video - I am very impressed, so this isn't a post to rip on the 5D IV at all. I think it is amazing.

I noticed something strange when shooting my Dynamic Range test, it looks like some sort of ghosting across the frame (see images below) and it occurs even when I block 1/2 of the lens with a poster board. It is a horizontal banding across the entire frame, even on the side that was completely blocked with a black poster board (right on the lens).

The strange thing is, I've posted this on Canon's Forum twice now, and both times it was taken down almost immediately. Which is really strange.

I was wondering if a couple of you guys could test the same conditions on your 5DIV's to see if you are getting the same results?

This is what I know:

1. The defect doesn't happen on a 5D3, A7rii, Nikon D500 or Fuji XT-2 under the same conditions.
2. It only happens on the very far left 1/3 of the frame when over-exposing a certain amount of it, about 1/4-1/3 of the frame, and it typically needs to start on the very far left side, and extend minimum about 1/4 into the frame. Overexposing in the center, the right, or smaller portions of the left side have no effect and seem normal.
3. The defect is strictly horizontal, even when the over exposure is oriented diagonally.
4. The defect is not visible until raising the shadows. You won't see it until then.

Im trying to figure out if this is something exclusive to the 5D4 I was using or if it is a model wide defect.

Can anyone else test this to confirm or deny?

1. Block the right half of the lens
2. Overexpose the left half with a strobe.
3. Open in RAW
4. Open up the shadows.

I thank you in advance!

Michael The Maven

70-200L autofocus on center vs. peripheral focus points

Hi,

I have the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS ii USM lens and use it with my 5d3. I have tried my best to AFMA it and I am happy with its focus accuracy when using the center focus point in the single spot focus point -mode. However, I am noticing (more and more consistently) that @ f/2.8 when using peripheral focus points (for example the second column of focus points from either left or right side when in landscape orientation), the focus is often not correct. Mostly it is front focusing, though I have not made exact measurements. Is this typical to the lens, or should I send it in for some service?

And, is this more typically a lens or a body problem? I am not noticing the same with for example 24-70Lii or 100L macro, but I am not sure if there is a bit of this same with 35f2.

I've now learned to use more focus and recompose -technique with the 70-200, which is fine for stills and gives me good results, but for less still subjects peripheral focus points would be useful for nicer compositions.

Anyone having similar experiences, on this lens or another, or peripheral focus points in general? All my experiences are mainly in good light situations.

Thanks for any insight!

Her new toy photographed with my new toy.

Hi Folks.
So the conversation went something like,
Angela: I think I'd really like a 70th anniversary Vespa 150cc scooter.
Me, calling her bluff: Yes ok, and I'd like an EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM.
Angela: Are you sure because last week you were talking about a different lens.
Me: Yes, I checked and the other lens (a 300 f2.8L mkI) would be too long for most of the shots at Goodwood and not long enough for the bird hide.

Well, she has a scooter and I have an EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM and a 1.4xIII. ;D ;D 8)

Her with her new toy shot by me with my new toy!

I love this new lens, it already shows a marked improvement in sharpness and AF speed and reliability over my Σ150-500 even with the f8 limitations with the 1.4xIII giving only the centre cross of AF points and I haven't done AFMA on it yet.
I'm afraid there is going to be a flurry of shots with this lens, I have been out shooting with it most days since I got it.

Cheers, Graham.

Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO IS To Arrive in Late 2017 [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that the Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO IS <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-ef-600mm-f4-do-br-at-canon-expo/">that was shown in prototype form</a> at Canon EXPO in September of 2015 is currently scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2017.</p>
<p>Along with the new DO supertelephoto, we’re told that Canon is well on its way developing updates for the other “big white” prime lenses. While optics will likely be similar, Canon is working on weight savings techniques and updated coatings and IS systems. We don’t expect to see these lenses announced in 2017, although we’re told it’s possible we may see them being tested at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea.</p>
<p>As with all lens announcements, take them with a grain of salt, as they do have a tendancy to be met with delays.</p>

Review: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV by Lensrentals.com

HTML:
Roger <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/teardown-canon-eos-5d-mark-iv/">completed his teardown of the EOS 5D Mark IV</a> relatively quickly, now the folks at Lensrentals.com have completed their review of the EOS 5D Mark IV, and I pretty much agree with their assessment of the camera and its place in the industry.</p>
<p><strong>From Lensrentals.com</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Heads up, here comes a short rant. Upon the announcement of this camera, it was instantly met with some harsh critics on the feature list of the system. People want a camera that can shoot medium format quality images, with the speed of a Canon 1DX Mark II, and the video functionalities of a RED Weapon – and they want the price to sit under $3,000. Sure, this camera doesn’t have anything and may not have pushed the bounds of the industry, but the Canon 5D series has never been about being revolutionary in features, but being revolutionary in practicality….. <a href="https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2016/09/lensrentals-com-reviews-the-canon-5d-mark-iv/">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Body for Time-lapse photography

I have a job to do which involves, among other things, producing a time-lapse photography video of a very large construction, basically groundworks and then the building.

I have a question for those of you that are into time-lapse: what would be the best camera for this job ? It doesn't have to be FF, better to be Canon unless someone has a suggestion for a camera that has a fixed lens, then brand doesn't matter. FOV wants to be about 28 mil on crop. The camera could be removed each night and replace in the morning, so it would be reasonably safe.

The budget for the overall job on this is substantial and I could purchase the camera for the job and then sell it afterwards. At the moment it looks to me as if a used 7DII might be best.

Any thoughts ? I'm interested to hear from you guys who do this type of thing.

Lightweight lens for wildlife/birding

Hey all,

I own a 5D3 and use a Sigma 150-600C for wildlife, and I am more then happy with my results from this combination. My wife comes out with me often, and she is currently using a 70-200 f2.8 IS version 1 on a 7D.

unfortunately for her, this is not enough reach obviously and it is really a shame. We really enjoy going out looking for wildlife and birds, and I want to get her closer to the action with out breaking the bank, but more importantly with out a lot of weight. For now, I don't think adding a tripod will be an idea. We have a monopod, and are going to start trying it out.

the options I'm aware of:
300mm f4 - Not a lot more reach, but could take x1.4, IS, close focusing distance, lightweight
400mm f5.6 - same ''reach'' as my Sigma, lightweight, but will not take 1.4 with current 7d,
150-600mm(sigma/tamron) - redundent, plus it is generally too heavy.
70-300mm f4-5.6L - seems small and light enough, still only 300mm but has IS and versatility of the zoom.
70-200mm f2.8Lii - Replace my 70-200mm and looks like it takes extenders well.
100-400mm f4.5-5.6ii - The best of everything, and what I'm leaning towards, but the weight will be the biggest issue.

Am I missing anything? I know it is up us to decide but Im curious for the opinions of the more experienced and knowledgeable

I should add, when the price of the used 5D3 comes down, I want to upgrade the 7D.

7DII issue: refurbished 7DII or new 80D?

My 7DII suffers from (meanwhile 6th maintenance) permanent hardware problems (cam suddenly switches off). I thought after the last repair, this error has stopped.
But this week it happened again. 3
My dealer offered me to get an refurbished exchange body with about 40.000 releases, or an new 80D.

I´m torn, which solution would be best.
My question is: Is the AF (and the performance at all) of the 80D visibly slower as the 7DII`s?
I do shoot most times birds, but honestly with the quiet shutter leaease mode.
I read, the 80D has an better image quality and better noise, than the 7DII when shooting at Iso 1600.

I like the crop mode, as the places where I shoot are far away, so the extra reach is welcome.

C1/2/3 slots

I was having fun playing flash games last night, and I started to want more user defined configuration slots.

I have the 2 C1/2 slots which I use for "landscape" and "kid chasing" plus I tend to use the M mode for flash use, but I find I have to be quite careful as I can end up inheriting settings if I've been playing astro games or other things.

I realised I could do with several C settings, the question is, am I the only one.. do we all wish for a dozen user defined configs?.

IF you could choose, how many would you like?

Your ultimate 6D Mark II?

Hello,

The 6DII will eventually come out, hopefully sometime early next year - what would you like to see in the new version? As I own the 6D, there are quite a few things I'd love to see in the 6DII to make me want to upgrade:

-Updated AF system (more points spread across a greater range)
-Dual Pixel AF (being able to use autofocus in video, like an 80D)
-24-28MP (more would be a treat, but I don't think Canon would go over 30, based on the recent rumor, 25 sounds about right)
- -4EV Center Point AF capability, improved ISOs would be great (its already great in the 6D, would love to see more in 6DII)
-Touchscreen and Articulating Screen - Would be SO helpful in so many ways.
-6FPS (more would be nice, but I doubt Canon would go over the 5DIV)
-1080p60fps video (I'd love to see canon throw in 4k thats good, but I doubt they would want the 6dII too close to the 5DIV)

I think those the main things I'd love to see in the new 6DII, what would be your most realistic specs on the 6DII that you'd love to see?

Did I just score a "Too Good To Be True" deal?

Was searching Amazon for a 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. Generally these go for around $800, and I've been seeing them used on eBay for between $600-$800.

Well tonight on Amazon I see a "used" one for $331.08. The description lists it as new in box, but packaging will be damaged.

Now we've all seen "too good to be true" camera and lens deals on Amazon before, these ridiculous scammers that are new Amazon merchants and want you to email them prior to ordering so they can scam you out of your money.

But this time, it was offered by AMAZON WAREHOUSE DEALS. Wat!

It said it was backordered 'til October 8, but then fulfilled by Amazon. Needless to say, I snagged it immediately and now I have this pending order!

E8eik5E.png

So what's the deal? Is this legit? Did I genuinely find a "too good to be true" deal on an L lens browsing Amazon at 3:30 in the morning?

Why 5D IV over 5DsR? Not for image quality

So i just played around with some comparison with the help of the dpreview files to make a decision on buying the 5DIV... Just for image Quality, the 5D IV looses against the 5DsR. So it all comes down to the "gimmicks", video functions and type of your photography to decide, which camera to use...

The image above is the 5DsR, ISO 12800, applyed noise reduction 50%!!, resized to the image size of the 5D IV,
The image below is the 5DIV, ISO 12800, orig size, no retouching...

i would love to see a 5dsR II with touchscreen, CFast, USB-C, Wifi (just for "tethered liveview, not for sending images to the remote!)...

Help, deadline approaches, can't open 5D4 RAW files

Crap! Took the plunge for the 5D4, and now I have egg all over my face.

I was so excited. Like a lot of 5D2 shooters I passed on the 5D3 because for someone who is primarily a landscape shooter it was no way a $3500 upgrade. The years dragged by, the usual 5D three-year refresh timeline brought nothing. Five years and counting from my 5D2, Canon was blithely trotting out the same old sensor technology (with algorithmic refinements) in cameras like the 5DS, as if there was no problem. I seriously considered changing horses, but hung in because of the lenses, the ergonomics, the usual good Canon stuff. But with growing doubts: I stopped giving myself the annual Christmas/birthday present of one shiny new L a year. Still, I couldn't bring myself to make the expensive switch of brands until I had seen if the 5D4 would address the issues that landscaper/portrait type shooters have been complaining about for years. (Sorry, but for certain kinds of shooting, DR does matter.) But where was the semi-mythical 5D4?

Finally, in mid-September, it was here, and the reviews were glowing. Even Canon's harshest critics were saying that Canon had significantly upgraded its game for my kind of shooting. Hell, DPR loved it--dozens of significant improvements as a general-purpose tool. And DxO--yes, DxO--rated its DR as two full stops better than the 5D3. I was there. After nearly seven long years, I plunked down my money for a new 5D. In fact, I went nuts. Call it a retirement gift for myself, or maybe playing Christmas catchup: but in the same week I also went ought and bought the two lenses I'd been lusting after since their release: the 24mm TS-E II, a landscaper's dream, and the 100-400mm L II, in my mind the ultimate all-purpose telephoto for someone who is only occasionally a wildlife/sports/action shooter. (Now that I had the body, what excuse for not owning the lenses?)

I was happily gassing about all this to a friend, who happens to coach the local girls high school tennis team. He wanted a slide show for the team banquet--a slide show like all the major sports had, and asked if I'd do the shooting during their last match on Thursday. Are you kidding? I went out and fired off 675 shots at (for me) an orgasmic seven shots per second--exactly twice the frame rate of my 5D2. And just to cut down on the computer-screen clutter, for the first time in my life I shot RAW without a JPEG backup.

I went home and put the files on the computer. Then I tried to load them into Elements 14. Nada. Nuttin'. Never had this problem with three previous Canon bodies. O.K. After struggling with Adobe's convoluted website for several hours, saw the welcome message that I had successfully downloaded Camera RAW 9.7, with Adobe-certified support for the 5D4. Back to Elements 14 to finally bring those 650 shots into the catalogue. Nada. Nuttin'. According to Elements 14, the files were still corrupt, or already in the catalogue, or in a format not supported by the program.

I'm frustrated; I'm furious--why does this crap have to be so complicated? More to the point, I have a friend and team of high school girls hoping to see for the first time something more than Mom's cell phone pictures of themselves in action. (Only major sports--football and basketball--get serious photographic attention at the high school level.) The banquet is about a week away, and I have nothing to show them. Can't find any help elsewhere on the net. There's a work-around I'm guessing: I could process the RAW files in Canon's proprietary software, save them as JPEGs and move them over to Elements, but Canon's software is so clunky that I've never used it and I'm sure it would take me more than a week to get up to minimum speed. I'm hoping someone on this forum has encountered a similar problem and can provide me with a magic bullet to get the files into Elements.
