AA filter in the 5D mark IV

I have seen nothing that suggests how much or what sort of AA filter is in the new 5D4. I really love the results I get with my 5Dsr. The effective removal of the AA filter has made a huge difference in the sharpness in the photos I get from the 5Dsr. I am not sure that I want another camera with an AA filter that is as heavy as the one on the 5D3. What is so difficult about making the AA filter switchable, or making it an option? Pentax does it.

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III vs EF 11-24mm f4L

So I have been holding off on an ultra wide waiting for the 16 - 35 mk3, but the price on launch puts it not far away from the 11 24 f4.

So any insight from someone who perhaps has the 16-35 mk2 and the 11 24? How useful in real life is each lens..

I assume the 16 35 mk3 will be all round better than the mk2. I have the 24 70 mk2 so I am good for 24, 2.8 onwards

I probably do as much if not more landscape than event so I am leaning towards the 11 24...but looking at sample images I prefer the 16-35, that I have seen.

Patent: How Canon Increased AF Point Spread in the EOS 5D Mark IV

HTML:
<a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_rumours.html">Northlight</a> has broken down a patent that shows how Canon was able to increase the spread of the AF points in the EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<blockquote><p>A Canon patent shows how by replacing the sub mirrors with laminated diffraction gratings, the normal angle of relflection can be altered, adding or subtracting to the usual angle. In the example of the 5Dmk4 this is used to expand the vertical coverage of the AF sensor array.</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/5d4-supermirror.png"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-26632" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/5d4-supermirror-593x575.png" alt="5d4-supermirror" width="593" height="575" srcset="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/5d4-supermirror-593x575.png 593w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/5d4-supermirror-610x591.png 610w, http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/5d4-supermirror.png 708w" sizes="(max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px" /></a></p>
<p>As with a lot of Canon DSLRs, there are subtle advancements that will make using the tool better. Increased AF point spread is something a lot of photographers have wished for, and I think a lot of photographers will welcome once they have it.</p>

Dual Pixel RAW to be Lightroom compatible

Well this is a bit of welcome news for photographers looking forward to the flexibility offered by Dual Pixel RAW, but likely to sidestep it's use if DPP remained the required software to process it. Now it's looking like Lr is going to support Dual Pixel RAW. Good! Well done Canon for releasing to necessary code for Adobe to add compatibility.

A small gallery of 5D4 shots here:

In-camera JPG and RAW files for each shot are posted.

Pics 5-6 are identical, one as-taken in-camera, the other as processed in a beta of ACR.

Pics 10-11 are a before-and-after like they did with 5-6, but this time they took a landscape shot and seasoned it with a tasteful and delicate +100 shadow push. ::)

7d ii/5d iv continuous AF in Live View

Just had a question about the continuous AF in live view for both cameras.

First the 5d iv; I could have sworn I read somewhere (press release maybe? not there now though) that the 5d iv had 4 fps in Live View with continuous AF. But of course now, I can't find anything about it now (it was on the wiki page, not anymore). Does anyone know if it does/doesn't? (I realize that no one has really had hands on the camera yet) Just maybe someone else saw/read something about that too, and hopefully I am not loosing my mind lol.

So about the 7dii (I do own one), it has continuous AF setting for Live View. AFAIK, its just to maintain rough focus (and drain the battery lol) for moving subjects while in live view. But after some back and forth emailing with canon, they told me IT does 4 fps continuous tracking while in live view, and that's kinda news too me. I asked for the source of that info, and he said "I contacted William and he tested out copy of the camera and it got 4 fps in live view".

I have looked for info about the 7d ii, and its not mentioned anywhere that I have looked. I then tried it out, and I have the feeling he got his wires crossed with silent shooting (which is 4fps), but if anyone knows otherwise let me know, any feedback is appreciated thanks!

Question for super-experts

My current equipment: Canon EOS 7DmkII + 8/16 Sigma + 24/70 f4 L + 100 macro f2.8 L + 100/400 L mkII + 24/105 STM for photos of nature and travel.
I would like to broaden the kit for the landscape with Canon EOS 6D (for use in particular with 24/70 or 24/105 STM) and 70/300 USM IS L (that i prefer to 70/200 F4 L is)
Questions for super-experts : it is a good choice?
Canon has intention to leave in the near future a MK2 version of 6D ?
(I would NOT buy a camera FF to 1300euros and then discover that is going to be a version MK2... :(

Thanks for your answers!

The Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM II Still Scheduled to Arrive This Year [CR3]

HTML:
We’re told that the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM II is still scheduled to arrive this year. Keep in mind lens announcements can be bumped pretty easily, which we saw recently with the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III. That lens was initially schedule to be announced in June.</p>
<p>We can confirm that this will be the first Canon lens with an LCD display built-in, however we’re still not sure what information will be present on the digital display.</p>
<p>The lens will be equipped with Nano-USM, the latest IS and will be heavier than the current model. Expect a big optical upgrade too we’re told.</p>
<p>There’s also a <a href="http://nokiS___a-camera.blogspot.ca/2016/08/2016827.html">buzz about another DSLR body coming</a>, dubbed DS126651, as seen at a Russian certification agency. We haven’t personally heard anything about another imminent camera body.</p>
<p><em>More to come…</em></p>

60D won't recognize lenses after being in the rain

We got pretty wet today at the festival as it started to downpour and we had to walk back to the car. While I tried to keep my camera under my shirt, my shirt got soaked. The camera dried up on the drive home and a little while later at home I turned it on to find that the aperture is reading 00, can't change the aperture and it won't autofocus. At one point the camera don't me it wasn't connecting to the lens and to clean the contacts. Tried that. Same issue. I also tried another lens of mine that wasn't with me during the rain. Same issue.

One of my batteries also said it couldn't communicate with the camera but the other one I put in did.

Is my camera broke or is there something else I can do?

6D pricing - open box items

Most places seem to be selling new 6D at $1499 (Amazon, Adorama, BH ...). However at Adorama and BH I also see listing for "open box" items at $1269. Their description of "open box" is as follows:

Adorama: Packaging may show some wear and tear. Item includes all original accessories and full 1 year Canon USA warranty

BHPhoto: Minimal signs of wear on packaging only—item itself is in pristine condition and includes the full manufacturer's or B&H warranty.

I can't tell if camera is unused, unopened new or not. Any has experience with the open box item?

Thanks
Deepinder

PS: Refurbished 6D is out of stock on canon site.

Leaked info from Canon Ambassador - Canon EF 50 f/1.4L II USM?

Hi folks,

maybe there alredy is a topic about this, but I wanted to share.

I came across article on canon.sk (Canon Slovakia) and canon-europe.com. The article is an interview with Canon Ambassador Paolo Pellegrin about the new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.

Paolo shoots with a limited selection of prime lenses, favouring their image quality and fast apertures as well as the creativity that the restriction of a single focal length gives him. “My normal set up is 28mm, 35mm and 50mm primes,” he reveals. “I have the fast EF35mm f/1.4L II USM and EF50mm f/1.4L II USM versions of those two lenses, and I enjoy using the EF28mm f/2.8 II USM too, which is very small.”

Here is the link:
http://www.canon-europe.com/cameras/eos-5d-mark-iv/paolo-pellegrin/

I've also taken a screenshot and I'm adding it as attachement.

What do you think? Typo? Also a new 28 f/2.8II USM? Isn't the one with IS enough?

My toughts on EF 50 f/1.4L II USM
  • there is no EF 50 f/1.4L USM currently, so why Mark II? - that "L" is a typo
  • has Canon ever done something like "L treatment" with adding Mark II?

Regards

Canon EOS M5 Spotted at Russian Certification

HTML:
We <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/there-will-be-a-new-eos-m-camera-coming-in-2016/">believe that the next camera to be announced by Canon will be the EOS M5</a>, a mirrorless camera that will be a departure from what has come before it. It won’t be a full frame camera, but it will be slightly upmarket from the EOS M3. Alongside the camera will be a new EF-M 18-150mm lens.</p>

Not specifocally Canon, but very well said about photos in general.

Don't know exactly where to share this:

http://petapixel.com/2012/01/10/this-photograph-is-not-free/

I've often made similar comments to folks that ask "Can we use this photo free?" ... OR, in the same vein, "Will you write us an article for free. We're a non-profit and don't have much PR money." Requests usually come from non-profits that have a mission (don't we all?) ... while the Director and staff all draw salaries ... but have no additional budget.

Long time 5D user, will I upgrade or wait for 6DII?

I’ve been using the 5D since the classic Mk1. In fact it was the first DSLR I owned coming from film days. I did use the 1DII prior but only hired.

For the first time I’m not placing a preorder for the MkIV. That’s not to say that the camera won’t end up in my kit because most likely it will.

There’s no doubt that so many things on the Mk4 will have been improved including things that I care about, dynamic range, high iso, focusing speed, expanded focusing points, colour, wifi, and 4K.

My only gripe is no flip screen (my personal preference and I don’t want to start another war). The 30.4mp is great for certain projects but for much of my work unnecessary and it will slow down my workflow. Sure, you can shoot at a lower resolution, but do you have to then advise your client that you’re not shooting at full resolution? For that reason, I can stick with the MkIII, then I am always shooting at full resolution 22mp.

I’ve been looking forward to 4K, more for personal projects than commercial ones - I have yet to be asked by a client for compulsory 4K, although I don’t doubt the time will come. Disclaimer: I shoot mostly stills.

So I guess, I’m interested to see who else like me hasn’t pre-ordered and why? And will you wait for the 6D?

The Superb Manfrotto 410 Geared Head

I would just like to say a big thank you to the forum members who advised I invest in a geared head. I picked up a barely used unit for roughly $200 equivalent.

What an incredibly engineered piece of equipment which is a major upgrade over the basic 3 way head I upgraded from. Once locked in, there is no play at all and the precision it offers is exactly what I needed to partner my T-SE 24mm and for my non bug macro work.

I highly recommend this unit to anybody who shoot frequently off of a tripod.

Thanks once again

Canadian birds

We have just come back from a two-week holiday with all of our immediate family, children and grandchildren, in Nova Scotia. Of course, we had the Canon 100-400mm II, Sigma 150-600mm C, Canon 5DS R and 7DII. In homage to our CR hosts and the many Canadian members, I will post some highlights hoping the Canadians ill join in.

Buddy with a T1i wants an EF-S superzoom...

Ugh, I can't stand large FL multiplier lenses, but a buddy of mine asked for advice for an 18-200, 18-270, etc. for his T1i for an upcoming trip. I tried to talk him into keeping his kit 18-55 and changing out for a 55- or 70- longer lens, but I think his mind's made up.

I don't follow EF-S superzooms at all. Help me out?

  • Best value in an EF-S 18-200+ lens?
  • Best performance in an EF-S 18-200+ lens?

EF is likely out for his budget, but he wants that wide end to go at least as wide as his current kit lens anyway. So EF-S it is.

Thx,
A
