Strong emotions - for corporations?

Hi all,

I hope it’s acceptable to share my thoughts here. If not, please feel free to (re)move this post.

I have been a member of this forum since the beginning of the year and a reader for much longer (not only CR, but also the other rumor sites like NR, SAR, 43rumors etc.). And one thing I’ve noticed left me scratching my head: the forum’s tone can be quite bipolar. On one hand, people are incredibly helpful, providing assistance, information, and sharing photos. On the other hand, some of the same individuals can become downright nasty and insulting when defending “their” company—especially when competing companies are involved. Whether it’s about specs, sales, ergonomics, or any other aspect, discussions can quickly devolve into name-calling, with terms like “idiots,” “hacks,” and “asinine” thrown around.

This phenomenon baffles me. While I understand the desire to defend hard-earned purchases, the intensity of emotions directed toward corporations that don’t truly care about individual buyers surprises me. I recall similar debates from my school days, such as Sega vs. Nintendo, but those were among children. Here, we’re dealing with adults who have a lifetime of experiences.

I would hope for more mutual respect regarding decisions and preferences. If someone forms an opinion based on incorrect data, it would be better to politely guide them toward accurate information rather than resorting to name-calling. And of course this is unfortunately not confined to CR.

What are your thoughts? Am I being naive here? Cheers

PS: Having had cams from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus and Panasonic I don´t consider myself a fanboy of any of these companys. I always bought what suited my needs and budget at a certain time. And right now it`s the A7C which does best what I need it to do. It might very well be a different camera in the near or far future.

R3 can focus stack with flash but R5 can't ?

TIL that R3 can focus stack (bracketing) with flash , i already knew that R5 can't, and that if you do want to use it as a feature, you need continues lights.

how does this make any sense ? Is it just me that thinks that this feature is much more suitable for the R5 and not the R3 ? are people shooting products and architecture with the r3 instead ?

is it a physical / technology limitation ? i'm honestly a bit confused and quite pissed off at the moment.

here's the camera manuals on focus bracketing that shows the R3 can do flash

vs the R5 that can't

........................

also thanks to 30 thousand youtubers that compare cameras but don't mention these types of features

The hybrid primes won’t be all we get for fast wide-angle L prime lenses

What's next in 2024/2025?

Now that we finally have the R5II and R1, I wonder what are your guesses are regarding what will be next from Canon? Especially in 2025.
The R6II, R7 and R10 all got released in 2022 and if Canon follows their 4-year release-cycle they aren't due for an upgrade until 2026.
Will there be a retro-model like the Nikon Zf / Zfc? Are they going to release a new Powershot due to spiking TikTok trends?

From what I can tell, the G7X Mark II is massively trending right now, as a result of Fuji's success with their X100V / X100VI.
But people are looking for cheaper alternatives. And there hasn't been any (decent) Powershot model in a very long time (if we ignore the odd duck V10).

What are your guesses?

Canon’s global mirrorless market share sits at 41%, with Sony as their “biggest competitor”

A Nikkei article provided further information about the mirrorless global market share, and Canon sits at 41.2%, with Sony close behind at 32.1%, Nikon is lagging behind the new “Big 2” at 13.2%. Canon Vice President Tsuyoshi Tokura acknowledged that Sony is their “biggest competitor”, and obviously Canon has to be more proactive in increasing

Best way to dry rain soaked equipment

I got caught out this week on a very wet day on an uninhabited rock in the atlantic. It was so wet I only took about 6 photos. I always put lenses and bodies into zip lock bags when going to islands with no piers as its easy to slip on seaweed covered rocks wading onto islands. I do have a water proof cape/lens cover but just not with me on Monday.
My gear didn’t get vey wet and I dried it with paper towels when I got back to the car.
But what is the best way to dry rain soaked gear ?

Canon EF 200 f 2.8 V EF 200 f2 focusing speeds

Occasionally I find situations photographing flying birds that need a 200mm lens. An example would be on big sea cliffs with strong winds. I use a 200mm as its easier to track a non linear flight than the 300 f 2.8. I have got some great shots with the EF200mm 2.8L but I wonder apart from the weight and cost would a EF200 f 2L do any better with focusing speeds ?

CanonRumors' accuracy rate on the R5 Mark II was abysmal

The R5 had already been released when I came back to Canon from Fujifilm, making the R5 Mark II the first camera I've paid attention to on this site since coverage of the 5D III. I am not impressed. And before anyone points out that "this is a rumor site", so is FujiRumors. And FujiRumors is almost never wrong. Reading FujiRumors is like seeing into the future. CanonRumors would have done better on the R5 Mark II by just guessing. I now understand why so many people are dismissive of what is published here about unreleased bodies. I appreciate this site for other things, but future rumor posts...blah, blah, blah, whatever. Rumors are only fun when there's a reasonable likelihood that they are accurate.

14-bit vs 12-bit: How does it affect IQ?

As I understand the math, a 14-bit image has four times the data of a 12-bit image. My understanding has been that this extra data provides additional resolution which allows for more aggressive pushing and pulling of shadows and highlights. However, I recently saw a thread about the R5 where the OP was suggesting that a 14-bit image has a wider dynamic range than a 12-bit image. This doesn't sound correct to me. A sensor captures what it captures. Well capacity is well capacity. But then again, I'm not an EE and I don't want to Dunning-Kruger my way through the thread. How should I understand the benefits of those extra 2 bits?
