Canon 85mm 1.2 ii

I've been looking at the 85 1.2 ii lens a lot lately as I'm really getting into portraits and with what I've read the only bad parts about the 85mm is the slow focusing and the rear element sticks out which makes it easier to scratch when mounting, so I was thinking what could the new one improve besides that? And also to you owners of the 85mm what problems do you have with it? Anything you would want in a new one?

Also how much better is it then the 50mm 1.2 and the 70-200 2.8 is ii for portraits?

Spyder5 Pro Issues?

I've replaced my old Spyder 3 system (no longer supported by Datacolor) with the Spyder5 Pro. The calibration is much warmer than with the old Spyder 3 system. I've tried it 5 times and get the same results. Since all of my images have been processed to the old calibration, which printed true colors, every image I've got in my Lightroom catalog looks like it's taken at late sunset.

Any others with this issue? I've contacted Datacolor and they seem to miss that all my previous processing is now out the window with the new calibrator. This is their response..."Since the Spyder5 is a completely new device which calibrates much more precisely compared to the much older Spyder3 calibrator, you simply can't compare the calibration results visually.
Give you eyes some time to get used to the new calibration with the Spyder5 - they are able to do a kind of automatic whitebalance.

However, if you still got issues, send us the profile you generated and photos (taken by a camera in manual mode with fixed white balance) showing the calibration on / off (from the SpyderProof showing the 16 images in the software - use short cut from the drop down menu lower left in the Spyder software). JPEG < 1 MB each.
Please also let us know the Spyder-hardware-serialnumber which you'll find on the sticker of your Spyder's USB plug (a photo as JPEG file is OK).

Last but not least, also send us a screenshot of your computer's start-up list (MSCONFIG). On Windows 10, you will find this via the task manager.
That way we could check and make sure you got no tools running which could "destroy" a correct calibration."

Modifiers and stand/boom for 600EX-RT

So I'm just getting into off-shoe lighting and product photography. All I currently have is a 600EX-RT, and I'd like to explore its capabilities before going into another solution like an AlienBee. I've heard a PLM umbrella with stofen-type diffuser can turn a speedlight into something resembling a softbox for less money than a softbox, but 64 inches seems like quite a bit for a speedlight to fill. $70 shipped for the PLM seems like a good deal if it actually works as I hope.

Another way is to get something like the SMDV 26 inch softbox, which is intended for speedlights and is probably easier to work with for close-up work. I imagine it would create cleaner reflections when used close to shiny objects because the speedlight and stand wouldn't be between the modifier and the subject. It's much more expensive at $170 though.

Also, what about supports? Paul Buff has a basic stand for only $40 that should support a speedlight+modifier, but shipping would add quite a bit to that, and it doesn't include a boom. I could get a cheapo stand+boom kit from Amazon for $40 shipped. It wouldn't stand up to heavy use, but for simple home use (no wind issues, no commercial pressures, and I tend to be careful) hopefully it would work.

Lastly, YN-E3-RT or generic radio triggers like Phottix etc.? I've been triggering the 600 remotely with my 70D's onboard flash, but that's something I'd like to get away from if possible. I'm definitely not spending $300 on the Canon transmitter, but I'd like the cleanliness of having fewer things to connect, power, etc.

Any other recommendations or suggestions? I'd like to spend under $300 total for trigger, modifier, and stand/boom.

Thanks!

Leak: Hasselblad Mirrorless Medium Format

http://photorumors.com/2016/06/21/the-new-hasselblad-x1d-medium-format-mirrorless-camera-leaked-online/

There she blows! A hump like a snowhill!

$8995 without lenses, which run in the $2500 neighborhood.

They very wisely didn't share any side views of this product with a back attached. ::) Unless there is no back and it really is that thin, which means the rumor of using existing Hass'y lenses turns out to be false.

Canon 135L f2.0 focus problem

I just received a Canon 135L 2.0 The lens was purchased used, and was built in 2013.
My issue is that the autofocus seems VERY slow, and often has a difficult time focusing on close objects.
Yes, I do have the focus distance switch set to the .9m to infinity position.
Lens looks beautiful with no signs of damage, but it takes a few seconds to go from 3 feet to 50 feet.
I have tried the lens on my 70D and 5D classic with the same results.

Any suggestions on what might be wrong, or do I need to return the lens?

Thanks!
Don

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III Announcement Moved Closer to Photokina?

HTML:
We’re told that the announcement for the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III has been moved closer to Photokina in September, and delivery along with it. That puts 3 lenses in the mix for announcement at Photokina, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II and EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II. We also expect to see the EOS 5D Mark IV announced.

Delays with lens launches happen a lot, as production is always challenging. For example, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II was set for a Photokina announcement, but ended up being delayed a couple of months and was announced in November of that year. The EF 11-24mm f/4L was delayed by about 6 months, as marketing material was already out, but announcement was held back for production reasons.

If anything else changes, we’ll let you know.

1DX2 illuminated focus points

Does anyone else have this "phenomenum" (as Canon would put it)?

When you focus, the selected point or group is nice and bright (wherever it's positioned) and the other available focus points are quite faint in comparison - so far, so good. The "issue" I have is with the brightness of the other available points. The brightness of them definitely fades from top to bottom and also from the middle out to the far left/right, so much so, that the lowest far left and right points are quite hard to see. Increasing the brightness level (there're only two available) helps slightly but the brightness is not even. This "undocumented graduated effect" is the same no matter what settings I use.

Any thoughts or are they all like that?

Thanks.

1DXm2 Live View with EF85f/1.2L USM II in extreme low light.

Had some time today to play with 1DXm2 live shooting mode using EF85f/1.2L USM II.
So far I was very pleased with the results.

This was good surprise which I did not think about when making decision to get 1DXm2.
Fully opened (at f/1.2) system is focusing very fast, absolutely accurate almost in full darkness when it is almost not possible to see anything (at f1.2 with EV set to minus 1 auto ISO goes to 51200 and higher). Even though camera able to find the faces instantly and track selected face (it is possible to switch over using joystick). What I see Live View AF works very accurate with the sensor noise at ISO 51200 which is always problematic for any on sensor AF.
In general the less signal SNR the less accurate AF results.
But 1DXm2 does very well in such situations.

So now there is no need any more to put 85f1.2 on Sony a7S or A7r2 to use it in very dim conditions and get accurate focus.
And Live View AF on 1DXm2 in such low light conditions is working very fast.
Before 1DXm2 best results for 85f1.2 were when it was put on Sony A7R2 using Metabone IV adaptor. On 1DX all that above was practically not possible and not practical.

Now 1DXm2 is surpassing A7R2 is LiveView AF speed in very dim conditions (for EF85f1.2) and the only remaining advantage of A7R2 is IBIS allowing to use Shutter Speed around 1/20 -1/30 sec.
But that is only useful for static object, for moving ones it is still required to have shutter speed faster than 1/100 . The only thing that 1DXm2 still cannot catch up is the eye AF available on A7r2 with native lenses. Once get used to this lack of this feature on any other camera is very limiting , especially at wide aperture below 1.8. On the other hand 1DXm2 face tracking works very well so for apertures from 1.8 and above this is more that enough.

There are two modes in 1DXm2 Live view – one with face detection and object tracking and the other is FlexiZoneAF. Both working very well and each has its own applications.
There are also two silent modes in Live View, not sure what is difference – but mode 2 seems to be a bit less noisy.

As a summary – if anyone wants to get absolute image sharpness when using any lens then 1DXm2 Live View is now the best mode for that. Basically 1DXm2 is now on par with the best mirrorless systems when using on sensor AF. It could be used now at full extent for most general still photography shooting applications and only for sports and fast actions or wildlife and BIFs it is still better to use dedicated AF sensor, or when battery life is critical as in Live View battery consumption is significantly higher.
In general from what I see 1DXm2 is now much more versatile, flexible and much more useful camera than 1DX.

Using the 5DSR for wildlife, a field review

I have enjoyed using the Canon 5DSR full-frame body for photographing African wildlife. Whilst the 50mp camera might not be the single best, all-round wildlife camera, it does a pretty good job in many aspects, and in some things it excels. I have shared some thoughts on my experience with the camera so far, including lots of actual images taken with the camera, and just where and how I think it can best be used. The link is here:
http://www.grantatkinson.com/blog/using-the-canon-5dsr-for-photographing-african-wildlife

I did not get around yet to shooting night skies with the camera.

Canon 50 1.2 vs Sigma 50 Art for AI Servo

Hello,

The only 50mm lens I've owned is the Canon 50 1.8. I have used the Canon 50 1.2L (borrowed) but it was on land and the subject was essentially still.

What I use the lens for 95% of the time is shooting waves in the water. When the wave gets closer than say a car length away, the focus accuracy goes out the window. Further than that, and its pretty decent at tracking a wave approaching me in AI Servo, though certainly not perfect. But I've been using this lens for years, as its been getting the job done, but more and more, I am ending up with too many out of focus "would be" shots. Now shooting from the water has its own set of challenges that absolutely can and will affect how your camera/lens focus. However I've been doing it for a couple years or so now and I've gotten better at minimizing those challenges.

So my question is, which of these two lenses would be better at autofocusing a moving subject that is approaching me in AI Servo mode, especially once the subject starts getting closer? I of course know about the Sigma "issues" with focusing, but my question still stands, as I've heard/read many things about the Canon 50 1.2 as well.

Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 with SoftFocus

I don't hear much about the Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 with SoftFocus, but it sure sounds interesting.

We all know that most of the newest lenses are extremely sharp. So much so that they can be unflattering to women. Very unflattering.

Then I happened across a couple of reviews of this lens. I looked at the flickr photo pool and can see where soft focus can be a useful tool (stretch marks, lines, wrinkles). There was a woman in her late 40's I shot some photos of a few months back that was pretty good looking, however the lines and wrinkles on her face became dark canyons. I couldn't show her the photos at all. Some fill flash would have been a good idea I think.

I have a little film camera (Voigtlander Vito) that requires one to estimate the distance to the subject to get proper focus. Sometimes the effect of getting it wrong can be pleasing in a portrait.

The 135 f/2.8 SF is a very old lens and I have only seen it in stock a few times and that was a couple of years ago. I know the effect can be recreated in photoshop.

Still I am left wondering what some of you that have used this lens think about it and also if you think a frosted (?) filter does just as good a job.

Thanks guys!

I screwed up - Gross 400mm f/5.6 lens

Ugh, I screwed up. I sold Canon 400mm f/5.6 lens via the Fred Miranda forums. Right before packaging up the lens, I found the original case stuffed under my desk. I pulled it out, popped in the lens and shipped it off.

The big mistake was not looking all the way into the lens case. It turns out there was a small mouse in there (dunno if it was alive or not at the time, I didn't hear any scurrying around). My second mistake was forgetting the lens cover. Those two lapses in judgement resulted in the buyer getting my nearly pristine lens in this condition.
