5D4 image quality given 1DX2 Results

In the previous generation, the 5D3 only had better IQ over the 1DX due to resolution alone at low ISO.

Will the same hold true again? I think so.

The 1DX was better than the 5D3 at about 400 ISO and beyond. Depending of course on how picky (discerning) you are.

It is hard to imagine that Canon would show up the 1DX2 with a 5D series body. We certainty aren't getting better high ISO performance. At best, we might get a little better low ISO DR? Maybe, maybe not. Depends how they "tune" the sensor.

The 1DX2 has, for Canon, along with the 80D, shown a huge, huge leap in DR performance. ISO is improved, but not a whole lot. Which makes sense, as this is a very difficult area to improve on. And historically, a 1/3 stop per generation is typical. With 1/2 stop or more being an exceptional improvement.

All that said, we now know that unless Canon changes the way they do things - the 5D4 will be close, but not better than the 1DX2 image quality which is readily available online now. Nikon has never done it that way. They're ok with some cameras being better IQ at a lower line. Nikon obviously specialized with their D5 sensor. Going for all out high ISO performance, and giving up DR and resolution. I think that is a big mistake on their part. This is because all the D5 has going for it is the sports features. Speed and high ISO. In sports, Canon destroys Nikon. More speed, superior glass - things that matter most. As well as superior AF. And just a hair less high ISO performance, it is literally splitting meaningless hairs at that point.

Nikon I believe underestimated the number of photographers that use their flagship for events that are not sports. This is for two reasons, because the D810 is too slow, has bad high ISO, and makes gigantic files. Not to mention crappy controls for fast paced environments. Nikon lacks a 5D3 events jack-of-all-trades workhorse. D750 is kinda it now, but it's got some weaknesses. Serious pros turn to the D4S for weddings, concerts, and all events and general purpose use.

When it comes to video, Canon is slaughtering Nikon at the flagship level. Thus, the 1DX2 will be more successful than the D5.

But back to the 5D4 -- the main competitor will be the D750. 24mp. Very good sensor. But the camera feels like a plastic turd. Terrible ergonomics. Bad reputation with recalls. Nikon had a real chance to take over the event camera world, and failed. Canon, despite being horrifically slow to innovate - and given the 1DX2's performance, has only "caught up" NOT surpassed the competition, it will again come down to a choice -

Do you want the utmost in IQ, yet sacrifice in literally all other areas? Get Nikon. Happy with just a few percentage points less IQ that never show up in real world use - but gain advantage in nearly every other category? Go Canon.

As far as the rest - 5D4 will have the same 61pt system, will it be as good as the 1DX2? I doubt it. Weaker in processing or logic somehow. 24mp is what is rumored. That is good. More DR, but not as much as Nikon but close. Sounds good. 7fps.

Not much left to know if one is looking to make a decision before announcement. Unless there's some shocker surprise ( unlikely ). You pretty much know what you're getting.

The 6D2 might be the only mystery. As last time, it's sensor was better than the 5D3. It was a sort of 1/3 generation newer sensor.

You Said You Loved Me (Short Film)

Hey guys,
Been a while since my last video, but this time I'm back with a proper short film and it's my best work yet.

This short film won Best Cinematography, Script, Performance, and Editing in my University's annual film competition - was hoping to win one or two awards, but to win all four? Man, practice makes perfect - by no means am I saying this is a perfect short film, it's not, but it's been quite a journey before I got here and I'm proud of what my cast and crew have produced in my latest piece.

The short film questions the fact that.. In a relationship, shouldn't we keep the sweet and unforgettable memories to ourselves.. Rather than sharing it with others? It explores how social media is affecting our relationship with people, especially with our loved ones.

Enjoy and let me know what you all think!!

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Studio Tests

HTML:
<a href="http://See the full studio test">DPReview</a> has posted their first studio tests with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. They have tested RAW dynamic range performance as well as ISO to give you an idea just how good the new 20.2mp Canon sensor is.</p>
<p>Dyanmic Range</p>
<blockquote><p>The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II shows very similar amounts of noise to the excellent sensor in the Sony a7R II up until a 3EV push, with the Canon dropping behind after a 4EV push. It’s a similar story against the likes of the <span id="imageComparisonLink2429" class="linkish">Nikon D750</span> or <span id="imageComparisonLink2430" class="linkish">D810</span>. This means that the darker shadows in a processed image would be slightly cleaner in images from these cameras, after contrast adjustments or a less extreme push.</p>
<p>However, this performance is noticeably better than the <span id="imageComparisonLink2432" class="linkish">Canon EOS 5DS R</span> and, significantly, better than the 1D X II’s most direct rival: the <span id="imageComparisonLink2433" class="linkish">Nikon D5</span>. <a href="http://www.dpreview.com/news/8090146652/canon-eos-1d-x-mark-ii-studio-tests/1" target="_blank">See the full studio test</a></p></blockquote>
<p>ISO Performance:</p>
<blockquote><p>Although the 1D-X II shows significant increase in dynamic range at low ISOs in our dynamic range tests, high ISO Raw performance remains <span id="imageComparisonLink2446" class="linkish">fairly similar</span> to its predecessor, falling behind the Nikon D5, and even slightly behind the 42MP Sony a7R II, <span id="imageComparisonLink2447" class="linkish">at very high ISOs</span>. <a href="http://www.dpreview.com/news/8090146652/canon-eos-1d-x-mark-ii-studio-tests/1" target="_blank">See the full studio test</a></p></blockquote>
<p>There will likely be a lot of comparison tests and reviews rolling out in the coming weeks. I haven’t received my EOS-1D X Mark II yet, so I’ll just enjoy reading about it for now. :)</p>

1dx Mark II battery dilemma

Hi,

Does anyone know the performance of the old 1dx battery and the new lp-e19 on the 1dxII? I am cutting a trip very close with when I will be receiving the camera, and I need 3 total batteries. Unfortunately, nobody has the new battery in stock, and may not for my trip. So I am looking at the old battery. I am only shooting video. How will this affect battery life? Anyone test this?

Also, does anyone know if some place rents this battery?
Thanks for your help.

Sigma 180mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro

I did a search and I don't think there's an existing thread for this lens, so I thought I'd start one!

Mine's arriving tomorrow, but in the meantime, does anyone else here have experience with this lens, or images to share? For me it's rare example of a third party offering something that Canon itself does not - while the 180L is highly regarded, the lack of IS and the slightly narrower maximum aperture swayed me towards the Sigma. And it was essentially the same price!

The ludicrously large 1d series

So I borrowed a 1dx from Canon a few weeks ago and enjoyed myself vastly. I also borrowed the 500 f/4 II at the same time, and it was a blast.

In the past, I wondered how people could actually want a camera that large, and I figured that once you had one in the hand that perhaps the benefits of it would make themselves evident.

Well, I loved the frame rate, and I loved the files, but I have to say, I'm still sitting here wondering what Canon put in people's water to make them want to hold what feels like a chemistry text book up to their faces. I was out in the wood and marshes with the beast, so I wasn't able to determine if the combination would - as I suspect - scare small children were I to expose them to it on the street.

Perhaps it's not a question of choice, but rather of how much heft and volume is necessary to house that much electronic stuff, to harden it, to allow for heat dissipation, etc.

I bring this up because I now find myself watching everyone and their brother put up their 1Dx for sale, as they take possession of the new 1dx2. It is sorely tempting to take advantage of the increased supply in the 1dx used market. The price of a decent 1dx appears to be moving below that of a new 5dsr.

I'd sold my 5d3 in order to get maximum $ to put that cash toward the 5d4, but now I'm thinking I could get a 1dx instead. So hear are my questions:

1) Will my perception of the size and heft issue lessen over time?
2) Care to speculate as to IQ comparisons between the non-existent 5d4 and the quite existent 1dx?
3) Will mothers cross the street and put their hands over their children's eyes when I approach with 8 pounds of rig? (Think about that. The weight of a gallon of milk: 8 pounds; and the milk would have a better center of gravity.)
4) This one you need not answer, as I've discovered the answer... Will my wife allow me to carry this rig in her presence when other humans might see us?

Thanks for any discouragement. -tig

Step up ring and hood for 50mm 1.2, does it fit?

Having recently acquired a canon 50mm f1.2 and the missus somehow not minding too much the problem of filters has arisen. All filters I have are 77mm to fit my zooms so I was hoping it'd be possible to use a step-up adapter 72-77mm and still fit the normal lens hood. Does anyone know if it works? The filters I have are all slim Hoya filters

I was hoping to not have to buy more filters as they are after all pretty expensive and the only other lens I could see myself buying with another size thread would be using 67mm filter size.

New 50mm Compact Macro on the Way? [CR1]

1DX Mark II purchase in Japan - where??

Help please. Has anyone in the not too distant past made a camera purchase in Japan?

My daughter will be in Tokyo in roughly 3 weeks for a 2 week holiday and is agreeable to bringing home the Mark II if the deal is right since she'd get to use it for 4K video (she's DSLR competent). This would have to end up costing no more than in Canada and I'm guessing that might be a challenge.

So, suggestions please. Also, any experiences with importation issues.

Jack
