80D or 6D?

If one were to upgrade from a 70D and already has a 35 2.0 IS, 85 1.8 and 200 2.8 and puts a massive weight on image quality (shooting mostly landscape, portraits, street and stage performances) would that person possibly be best served with an 80D or 6D? Would low ISO performance be similar?
Hypothetically, examples of what they might be shooting are at -

https://www.instagram.com/coryasteiner/ and

http://www.flickr.com/photos/corysteiner/

and wouldn't be opposed to a long zoom one day, but probably not overly needed most of the time.

THANKS because I got all kinds of **** on ebay and am ready to rumble.

AF problem at BIF 7DII

I am using the 7DII, 1.4 extender and the 600mm II 4 combination for some weeks now. When shooting BIF, only each 3rd or 4th picture is sharp. First I thought, it is my fault, but colleagues have the same problem with my body. Stationary birds are crispy sharp, but if the subject is moving, the AF gets in trouble. I sent it to Canon, but Canon refused an fixing, because the AF works and the pictures are sharp. So i phoned again, and I was told, they test the AF function on stationary objects.

I am really dissatisfied,as the 7DII seems to be the problem (working with 7DII´s from friends causes no problem - exept one 7DII that has AF troubles too). (By the way, I received a newsletter from canon where the 7DII&600mm combo is 800€s off - on the day, when I ordered both things Canon Germany refused to make such an rebate in the whole year 2016 >:( >:( >:( )

Has someone an idea, how I can convince Canon to have an better look on my cam?

IR-modified 600D: shutter speed goes crazy

I have a modified 600D and suddenly it only wanted to do 13s exposures when triggered from normal (not live view) mode. This started after I did some 13s exposure from live view and switched back to non-live view exposures. At the moment, it exposes for some time after shutter-button press, but no picture is recorded anymore.

From live view, everything still works fine. I did a reset (from menu) and left the battery out for half an hour. ???

Normal (non-live view) exposure triggered via usb using EOS utilities also seems to work fine.

Any suggestions?

Edit: nevermind ;D After testing via usb and unplugging the cable it suddenly works again

Strange Canon...

5DS place on update roadmap

The updated roadmap looks interesting; looks like all upper end Canon products will likely have the new on chip ADC technology by the end of next year.......only thing missing from the map is the 5DS......I wonder when that will get an upgrade? Hopefully as soon as possible, as that would make it the ultimate (at least for now) landscape body! Any thoughts?

I suspect it will be a new high MP sensor in whatever body form the 5d4 comes out with, so hopefully it doesn't take them too long, and then we all have something we want and no more DR issues to discuss!

Auto ISO Exposure Compensation

Does anyone know which bodies have Auto ISO exposure compensation or a reasonable work around? I am referring specifically to setting the aperture and shutter and letting the meter auto select an ISO but then manually compensate for the exposure. I seem to recall Auto ISO exposure compensation on the 7D (or some sort of useful workaround). I don't believe the 5DIII nor the 6D have this capability despite being an easy software addition for Canon.

5d3 10th Anniversary

Hello,
just got myself a 5d3 but recived a special edition. It comes with a different box (as seen in the attatched pciture) and a second silver strap. I never heard of this edition and google just shows me a post about buying one used. Does anybody know more? Should I do something with it or just use it?
Have a nice day

Buy japanese 5Ds R ?

Hi Everyone,

i´m thinking about replacing my 5D Mark 3 and 6D for a 5Ds R. Living with just one camera for the moment until the Mark 4 comes out.

Now i have found a nearly new 5Ds R (below 1k clicks) for a really good price. The only problem is, that its a japanese Version. What are the downsides? I can live with the limited languages and i´m aware of warrenty issues.
Is there anything else i need to know?

At least it comes with an original japanese retailer invoice.

Thanks a lot!

IMAX Film ‘A Beautiful Planet’ Features “Out Of This World” Canon 4K Imagery

HTML:
Using Canon Cameras and Lenses, Teams Shooting from the International Space Station Capture Breathtaking Images of Our Planet from a Vantage Point Few Get to See

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 14, 2016 – The future of 4K filmmaking is looking up — in fact, all the way to space. A Beautiful Planet, the latest 3D space documentary from acclaimed filmmaker Toni Myers and IMAX Entertainment, made in cooperation with NASA, will premiere in IMAX in New York on April 16 and was shot primarily in space using Canon cameras and lenses. The film will be shown to the public exclusively in IMAX® and IMAX® 3D theaters beginning April 29.

The Canon EOS C500 4K Digital Cinema Camera and EOS-1D C 4K cameras were transported from Earth to the International Space Station (ISS) in November 2014 via an unmanned supply ship, and were received by NASA astronaut Terry Virts, astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti from the European Space Agency and Cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov. This was the first time that 4K cameras were brought aboard the space station for a commercial film project. During a six-month mission at the ISS, Virts, Cristoforetti and Shkaplerov worked closely with NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, Butch Wilmore, Scott Kelly, and Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to take turns using Canon’s advanced digital cameras and lenses to film footage of lightning storms, the continents, volcanoes, coral reefs and bright city lights on Earth for the film. One of the film’s greatest and most dramatic highlights, the striking imagery of the Northern Lights–or the aurora borealis– was captured by NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren. These awe-inspiring images were previously unattainable in such stunning resolution.

The Canon EOS C500 4K (4096 x 2160-pixel) Digital Cinema Camera is capable of originating uncompressed RAW output for external recording to meet the demands of premium cinematic productions and other top-quality production markets. It features a Super 35mm, 8.85-megapixel CMOS image sensor, DIGIC DV III Image Processor and an expansive range of recording and output options specifically for 4K and 2K image acquisition. The compact, lightweight Canon EOS-1D C Digital SLR camera delivers outstanding video performance and provides video recording at 4K (4096 x 2160-pixel) or Full HD (1920 x 1080-pixel) resolution to support high-end motion picture, television production and other advanced imaging applications.

‘A Beautiful Planet’ joins Canon at NAB

A gallery of still images taken on the ISS with the Canon EOS-1D C camera and Canon lenses during the shooting of the film will be shown at the Canon booth # C4325 at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show, April 18-21, 2016 in Las Vegas, NV. During NAB, the film’s Director of Photography, James Neihouse, ASC, will speak at Canon’s stage on the challenges and benefits of shooting in space. Joining him will be Marsha Ivins, a consultant on the film, former NASA astronaut, and a veteran of five space shuttle missions. Neihouse has worked on more than 30 IMAX films including Space Station 3D and Hubble 3D and trained more than 25 shuttle and space-station crews on the intricacies of large-format filmmaking.

The documentary, A Beautiful Planet was produced, written, and directed by Toni Myers, and is narrated by Academy Award®-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence.

About A Beautiful Planet

A Beautiful Planet is a breathtaking portrait of Earth from space, providing a unique perspective and increased understanding of our planet and galaxy as never seen before. Made in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the film features stunning footage of our magnificent blue planet — and the effects humanity has had on it over time — captured by the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). From space, Earth blazes at night with the electric intensity of human expansion — a direct visualization of our changing world. But it is within our power to protect the planet. As we continue to explore and gain knowledge of our galaxy, we also develop a deeper connection to the place we all call home. From IMAX Entertainment and Toni Myers — the acclaimed filmmaker behind celebrated IMAX® documentaries Hubble 3D, and Space Station 3D — A Beautiful Planet presents an awe-inspiring glimpse of Earth and a hopeful look into the future of humanity.

Patent: Canon EF-M 16-80mm f/2-6 for APS-C

HTML:
A patent for a new EF-M lens has appeared. We’ve been told that there will be 3-5 new lenses coming for the EF-M mount in 2016 and at least one will be a new kit lens. This patent is for an APS-C sized sensor and the optical formula is for an EF-M 16-80mm f/2-6. This concept definitely fits what would be considered a kit lens.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Talk & Updated Roadmap [CR2]

HTML:
The EOS 6D has been hugely successful and a lot of people are looking forward to its replacement. The good news is, there will be a replacement, the bad news is, it likely won’t come to market until the first half of 2017.

With the EOS 5D Mark IV launching in August for a September/October release, there wont be enough time to launch an EOS 6D Mark II in 2016. It was never a likely scenario that both cameras would launch around the same time. The EOS 5D Mark IV deserves the spotlight.

The only other ILC camera we think will be coming in 2016, will be a new mirrorless camera from Canon. The EOS M4 may be announced, but I don’t see it coming to market until 2017 as well.

We have been told by an unconfirmed source that the EOS 6D Mark II will sport the same resolution as the EOS 5D Mark IV, which is being reported at 24mp. We’ve also been told that it’s possible that the EOS 6D Mark II will not get DPAF, but I’d take that with a grain of salt, as it’s still too early to be sure about final specifications.

So this is our updated roadmap for new Canon DSLR/Mirroress cameras.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV: announcement in August 2016, Release in September/October.

Canon EOS M (High end model): announcement in October 2016, Release in November/December.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II: announcement in February 2017, release in March/April.

Canon EOS M4: announcement in February 2017, release in March/April

We have no information that suggests we’re going to see an EOS Rebel SL2 anytime soon, if at all.

What a difference lens coatings make

This is a very long and technical PDF, but just to see the photos coming from of a coated and un-coated Zeiss lens, it's interesting to see how much of a difference it makes. Not just in situations where flare could be an issue, but in terms of contrast too.

Worth a look if you're interested in what these 'lens coatings' actually do:

http://lenspire.zeiss.com/en/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2016/04/en_About-the-reduction-of-reflections-of-camera-lenses.pdf

Will I regret selling my 24-70ii?

Purchased the 24-70ii in 2014 and think it's a terrific lens. Great focal length for me, and great IQ. I use it on a 6D body. That being said, I just don't use it much at all. I shot 1 wedding with it, and since then stopped doing paid gigs. For personal use, I take smaller cameras now, like my Fuji. So really it's not the lens itself so much as I just don't use the DSLR that often for personal shooting anymore.

At the same time, I don't want to completely rid myself of DSLR as I still think there are areas it performs better than mirrorless. But I think shrinking/lightening my kit even more may get me to take it out more. So I was considering selling the 24-70 and replacing it with 2 small lenses, maybe something like the 35mm IS and the 85mm 1.8. 6D with the 35mm IS would be a small and fairly light kit and I like the 35mm focal length.

Adobe Unveils Breakthroughs in Video and Film Production

HTML:
Virtual Reality, Character Animation, Sound Innovation Comes To Creative Cloud

SAN JOSE, Calif. — April 13, 2016 — The way consumers access and view content has undergone sweeping changes. Media and entertainment companies, along with creative professionals, are under increasing pressure to find new ways to create, deliver and monetize content. They must also adapt to rapidly evolving technology advancements, including high resolution capture, new delivery formats and virtual reality to name a few. Also, enterprises are dealing with an explosion of content demands from constituencies and need to integrate high-impact content types, like video, into their communications strategies.

Ahead of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show next week, Adobe (Nasdaq:ADBE) has revealed new features across its Creative Cloud tools for video editing, motion graphics, audio and collaboration. Media and entertainment companies are combining these advanced content creation capabilities with Adobe Primetime to help deliver TV and video content across screens. With Adobe’s digital marketing tools TV networks and pay-TV providers can drive viewer acquisition, engagement and monetization as audiences embrace “over the top” (OTT) content via connected devices such as Apple TV, Sony PlayStation, Roku and Microsoft Xbox. At NAB, Adobe will demonstrate the updated tools and new workflows at booth #SL3910, South Hall (lower) in the Las Vegas Convention Center and at over 120 partner booths from April 18-21.

Adobe Creative Cloud video tools are becoming the go-to source for film editors of both award-winning Hollywood and indie films. The most recent example is Deadpool, the 20th Century FOX blockbuster which shattered box office records. The post-production team from Deadpool will discuss their state-of-the-art workflows and why they chose Adobe Premiere Pro CC in a Creative Master Series panel at NAB on April 19 from 4:15–5 p.m. PT.

Upcoming productions using Premiere Pro CC include Mindhunter, David Fincher’s new series for Netflix, and 6 Below directed by Scott Waugh and starring Josh Hartnett, which is currently shooting in 6K RED and will be edited natively in Premiere Pro.

Creative Cloud video tools are also powering a new generation of content delivered via social channels like YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

“The videos we make at RocketJump are pure entertainment,” said Freddie Wong, Founder of RocketJump, the hybrid studio/production company behind the popular RocketJump YouTube channel with nearly 8 million subscribers and 1.3 billion views. “We’ve been users of Adobe’s Creative Cloud for years and love the new features coming soon. Canon 16-35MM F4 IS or 16-35MM 2.8?

I'm mainly shooting adventure stuff like campfire nights, landscapes and "journey" pictures so I'm looking for something a bit more flexible then my Canon 14mm 2.8

So to those of you who bought the F4 IS version over the 2.8? did the loss of light effect your photography in any way? & is there any other advantage to the F4 IS version besides IS and the much better sharpness that everyone says it has?

“The new COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens ushers in a new class of optics for Canon. Featuring the outstanding build-quality and excellent optical performance professionals have come to expect from Canon, this new lens provides videographers with an affordable and versatile option when stepping up from EF lenses,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are excited about the new form factor this lens takes on and can’t wait to see how the imaging community utilizes it.”

Covering the commonly used focal length range of 18mm to 80mm, this new Zoom Lens combines the functionality of Canon EF lenses with the precision and cinematic look of Canon Cinema lenses. The new COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens is 4K-ready and features auto focus and optical image stabilization with compatible camera models only, resulting in high-resolution imagery, with the ability to assist filmmakers in capturing the shot they envisioned. Compatible with EF- mount Super 35mm large-format cameras, the lens maintains brightness across the entire focal range at T4.4 (equal to F4.0). For added convenience, videographers can control many of the features of the lens in a variety of ways through the EF-mount communication, including Dual Pixel CMOS AF, push auto iris, record start and stop and remote lens control via the camera with an optional remote control, compensation for chromatic aberration (when paired with the EOS C300 Mark II Cinema Camera), metadata acquisition, and selection of T-number display. The COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens features a nine-blade iris aperture diaphragm to help give footage a truly artistic and beautiful look and feel, providing the much desired “bokeh” effect in the out-of-focus areas. For improved operability, focus breathing has been greatly reduced due to the three group inner focusing system.

The lens comes equipped with a newly developed Servo Drive Unit, which provides seamless switching between servo and manual modes, allowing videographers motorized control of focus, zoom, and iris settings. The Servo Drive Unit is compatible with broadcast style industry-standard lens controllers including Canon’s ZSD-300D or FPD-400D. To further enhance ease-of-use for ENG and “run-and-gun” style shooters, Canon has developed an optional grip accessory specifically designed for the new lens, the ZSG-C10. The grip accessory connects to the camera through a 20-pin cable, allowing a variety of lens functions to be controlled from the grip, including zooming via a zoom rocker switch, one-shot AF and the starting and stopping of a recording. When the lens and grip are being used with the EOS C100 Mark II or EOS C300 Mark II Cinema Cameras, users will also have the ability to control the zoom and iris from the camera’s grip unit.

The Canon COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens and ZSG-C10 accessory grip are scheduled to be available later in 2016 for an estimated retail price of $5,500 and $499 respectively.** Additional lenses in the COMPACT-SERVO lens class will be announced in the near future. ME20F-SH Cinema Kit Includes 10 Accessories to Ready the Camera for Cinematic Applications

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 13, 2016 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today introduced the ME20F-SH Cinema Kit, which bundles the ME20F-SH Camera with 10 accessories to enhance the user operation and provide significant savings compared to purchasing the accessories separately. The ME20F-SH camera’s CMOS sensor has pixels measuring 19 μm square1, which is more than 5.5 times the surface area of the pixels on the CMOS sensor featured in select top-of-the-line interchangeable lens cameras2. Its large pixel size enables the ME20F-SH to deliver magnificent imagery in normal lighting conditions, while also possessing the high sensitivity to capture Full HD video in less than 0.0005 lux3 (at maximum 75 dB gain setting, equivalent to an ISO sensitivity of more than 4,000,000). Along with its modular body and compact size, the image quality delivered by the ME20F-SH camera allows users to capture clear images in even the most demanding of applications including cinematic production, reality television, and nature/wildlife documentaries.

“We’ve been using the ME20F-SH camera to simulate military-grade night vision goggles and no other camera can simulate night vision goggles like this – it’s the only machine that could do what we needed,” said David Klein, ASC, cinematographer of The History Channel’s upcoming drama series SIX. “The camera takes sensitivity to a new level; its high end is not just noteworthy, it’s mind blowing. When we shoot with the ME20F-SH camera, nearly every light is turned off or knocked down to nothing, and the camera does the rest,” added Dominik Mainl, SIX’s First AC. “I know this camera is capable of over four million ISO, but we found a remarkable singular image around 600,000 ISO, where signal to noise ratio was suddenly irrelevant.”

Similar to Canon’s Cinema EOS System of professional digital cinematography cameras, the ME20F-SH camera includes Canon Log and Wide DR, which make possible a wide dynamic range, delivering high-image-quality video results across a range of illumination environments, from low- to brightly lit conditions. The ME20F-SH employs the same EF mount (Cinema Lock type) as Canon’s SLR cameras and Cinema EOS series of professional digital cameras, allowing users to make use of the Company’s extensive lineup of interchangeable EF lenses from fisheye to super-telephoto.

The ME20F-SH kit accessory list includes the Atomos Shogun Flame external recorder, Zacuto mini baseplate, a SanDisk SSD pack, Noga Arm, HDMI cable, additional battery, battery and cheese plate, D-Tap/D-Tap cable, XLR cable and a battery charger that can also be used as a power adapter. All of these accessories make the ME20F-SH Cinema Kit ready for film and TV production as well as documentary work across a number of genres.

“Since its introduction in 2015, the ME20F-SH camera has been an incredible tool for cinematic production,” noted Tim Smith, senior advisor, Film & TV Production, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “It produces phenomenal light sensitivity that enables incredibly clean images in standard lighting conditions, and remarkable color imagery up to ISO 4,000,000 even in extremely low light. This new Cinema Kit empowers filmmakers to have a turnkey solution to shoot with minimal lighting equipment or additional gear.”

The Canon ME20F-SH Cinema Kit is expected to be available in April 2016 at a suggested list price of $31,000.* For additional information about the camera and this new kit please visit: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/multi-purpose-cameras/me20f-sh.
