100mm f2.8 IS macro - due for replacement?

I sold my Tamron 90mm macro some months ago with the intention of getting the Canon next time there was a cash-back deal. There's now a £75 cash-back here in the UK so I could get one for £544 (plus I'm off work this coming week so I'd have a new toy to play with whilst waiting on a 1DX2 or 5D4 :D).

So the question is, as I don't shoot a huge amount of macro stuff but like having one available, should I get one now or is the lens likely to get updated anytime soon? It was introduced back in 2009 and is clearly a great lens but is a greater lens not too far away? I know many also use it for portraits but I've a Sigma 85mm f1.4 for that. Hmmm, sell the Sigma too and just use the Canon for portraits and macro?

Decisions, decisions. Help!!!

EOS 5D Mark IV Update [CR2]

HTML:
We’re not shocked that the latest round of clickbait articles out there were wrong about the EOS 5D Mark III replacement being announced before The Photography Show this weekend. Though we do find the forum celebrities over on other forums to be entertaining.</p>
<p>We’ve been told that the EOS 5D Mark III replacement is slated for announcement after the EOS-1D X Mark II begins shipping in large quantities, which is at the end of April at last check. This information isn’t new. We’re also told that the next camera will get a moderate bump in resolution, but a good leap in dynamic range and ISO performance like the EOS-1D X Mark II. Again, this likely isn’t new information, but at least shows some consistency.</p>
<p>The same source has also told us that the video features of the camera will be the best in the lineup and will easily best the EOS-1D X Mark II for most filmmakers. While the EOS-1D X Mark II is aimed at photojournalists, the EOS 5D Mark IV will be aimed at filmmakers, with enough goodies to get new Canon buyers, retain old ones and get people on the path to getting into the Cinema EOS system. Apparently the plans for the video features of the camera changed about a year ago and became an important part of the development of the camera.</p>
<p>We’re looking forward to hearing more and I expect NAB 2016 will shed some light on the next full frame DSLR from Canon, though we don’t expect an announcement.</p>

Help identifying this mount

I am trying to identify this mount. The thread is M58, but it also has a locking pin. It is on a Kilfitt Zoomatar 250mm F/1.3 lens. I'd like to find/make an adapter to Canon EF mount. Is there a name for this Kilfitt mount? I've seen some Kilfitt adapters that appear to have a hole for this pin, however, it is not clear whether they are interchangeable and none were adaptations to the EF momunt. My plan right now is to get a M58 female to EF adapter and use extension tubes to get the flange distance in the ballpark. Any info or ideas welcomed.

Cheers, Joe

When the roads have no end 2016 Magic Lantern RAW Ultra HD 4K

Its all began in 2014, when decided to test my first wide angle lens (canon ef 16-35mm f4 IS) while driving the car. I had big ambitions for new project, but in the end everything was spontaneity random video with my precious memories. Driven and visited different nice places across south of England, mostly with my friends and girlfriend. Thank you for watching and hopefully you will enjoy.

Camera used: Canon 5 Mark III + Magic Lantern RAW video and ML intervalometer + Ef 16-35 F4 IS L + EF 70-200mm f2.8 IS L sometimes.

Pentax DFA* 70-200mm: The best 70-200 yet?

A guy over at DPR has already been using the new Pentax DFA* 70-200mm. Although he isn't using it on a FF K1 yet, it looks to be really impressive. Seems to have the sharpness of the Canon vII IS and the bokeh quality of the Nikon vII VR combined in one lens. It will be interesting to see how the corners perform on the FF K1.

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3978608

I love the way those images look, and they were even taken in crappy light. Super sharp details and the bokeh quality transitions nicely to a smooth and buttery background. Looks like a really high quality prime lens, IMO.

24-70mm II or primes?

Hi!

Now my professional Situation has changed and I am owner of muuuch more leisure. Reducing the working hours is really fine.
I have updated my equipment for wildlife photography. Updating my lens situation in the range from 24-70mm ist still a "to do". Primarily to photograph landscape and my children. Focus is on Image Quality.

So, I need your experience: Option 1 is to buy the 24-70II from Canon (no IS).
Option 2: I own the 24mm 2.8 IS Canon lens (I am happy with it) and the 70-200mm IS zoom 2.8 from Canon. If I buy the Tamron 1.8 35mm lens (seems to be very sharp as I read in tests) and the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art I would own 24-35-50-70mm primes that (in tests) have an better IQ, have IS and have an better bokeh.
What would you do?

Daniela

Which magazine ratings of DSLRs and CSCs

The UK Consumer Association magazine “Which” has just rated DSLRs and compact systems cameras for the April edition. The scoring is independent of price and is 45% for IQ, 30% for ease of use, 10% for viewfinder, 10% for video and 5% for flash.

For DSLRs: #1 is the Nikon DF (but no video); 2, Canon 5DIII; and 3 Canon 700D. The Nikon 7200 is in 5th place, 810 in 6th and Canon 6D in 7th. The 70D and 7DII are not even mentioned. For the CSCs, the Canon EOS M10 is a best buy in 5th place, pipping the Olympus OM-D E-M1. (Panasonics GH4 and GX8 are 1 and 2). The overall best buy is the 700D.

Some eyebrows must surely be raised. We are not exactly Nikon and Olympus fanboys here, but give some credit where credit is due.

First Impressions: New Tamron 35mm f1.8 & 6D

After having read our friend Dustin Abbott's Tamron review and also a few others on the net, I decided to take the plunge and ordered myself a Tamron SP 35mm f1.8 Di VC USD lens ( sheesh what a mouthful!)

This is my first non Canon lens in a decade. I burnt my fingers on a sigma zoom many years ago and decided to stick with Canon...but with our declining currency, prices have skyrocketed this year and my 'dream lens' the Canon EF 35mm f2 IS has become quite a bit more pricey than I am comfortable to pay. I happened to notice one of our big local suppliers had a sale on the 35mm Tamron at about 60% of the price of the Canon & Tamrons normal price...so I took the plunge without ever having had the lens in my hand....something I promised myself I will never do...

Here are my first impressions:

1. Big and heavy

2. Feels solid and very quiet... bonus is the included lens hood

3. Definite slight hesitation before focus confirmation

4. Outer AF points on my 6D is useless and results in totally out of focus images ( even with Canon lenses the outer AF points are iffy, but with the Tamron its much worse)

5. Center focus point is the only usable AF point but at least its very accurate in good light. I haven't tested very poor light yet.

5. Lens is very sharp even wide open...I have tended to ignore the max apertures on my lenses because I just dont shoot that way but its almost like a whole new world of possibilities opening up being able to shoot at f1.8

6. Lots of CA and colour fringing wide open but it does become less noticeable as I stop down

7. Fortunately I can remove almost all of the CA and colour fringing in LR

8. LR already has a profile for the lens that takes care of the shading , distortion and CA

10. Focus was off and I had to micro adjust focus, and now it focuses perfectly and accurately

11. F11 is also still sharp enough for me

So I will probably keep it. i'm very impressed with sharpness in the center and even out to the corners although I still want to shoot a few tests to check centering etc etc. Roger Cicala from Lens Rentals also noticed very good copy to copy variation. I have returned quite a few Canon zooms in the past because I just couldn't get a good copy, so I am glad that it would seem I got a good copy for a change!

Below a shot of my two dogs playing on the lawn. Exposure 100iso 1/3000sec and f1.8 centre point AF on 6D.

Processed in LR and Viveza. LR Tamron lens profile activated and sharpened etc as per my normal post processing routine.

( We are experiencing the worst drought in 30 years- although we have had good rains the past few days - and that's why my lawn looks the way it does! )

and yes that is a boxer with a tail ...its illegal to dock tails in my part of the world...

Does Moore's law apply to digital photography?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law
As far as I know, (computer) hardware geeks are upset by the delays of the releases from Intel and by the weak competition by AMD: the latest news seem to begin to contradict the holy Moore's law.
I would like to know whether an electronic-statistic-photography expert has ever tried to check whether this law applies to photography too (with respect to frames per seconds in pictures and videos, usable ISOs, resolution etc.).
I would also like to know whether the conjunction "whether" can be used twice in a sentence or not, but that's a bit off-topic. :'(

Canon 1Dx Mark II delayed?

Found this on Canon's Japanese website - now I did use Google translate for this so I'm not sure this is accurate.

If anyone has any information on this, please share.

There's More to a Camera System Than Just the Gear

HTML:
There’s an<a href="http://petapixel.com/2016/03/14/photographer-matt-granger-ditching-sony/" target="_blank"> interesting article on PetaPixel</a> about Australian professional photographer Matt Granger and his experience with the Sony A7 cameras and the level of support you receive when you own Sony gear in Australia.</p>
<p>His experiences seem to mimic mine in Canada, the quality of service from Sony Canada is abysmal at best. I’ve had a number of items that have needed repair, and every single one of them took more than 12 weeks to get back to me, and one of the items I haven’t seen for 6 months.</p>
<p>I tracked all of our Canon repairs when Lens Rentals Canada was open, and 90% of the repairs done by Canon Canada took less than 2 weeks door-to-door.</p>
<p>From Matt Granger</p>
<blockquote><p>“It all comes down to <em>service</em>,” Granger <a title="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apCc5JD4PYs" target="_blank" rel="external">writes</a>. “For many types of my work the gear itself is suitable for me. The sensors are quality. The images and video are outstanding. For other work I have never used them (rough conditions, tricky focus).”</p>
<p>“But with service like this – I just can’t use them at all.”</p></blockquote>
<p>Service isn’t going to be great every time, but it should be more often than not. In Canada, I recommend joining the <a href="http://www.canon.ca/inetCA/en/categoryHome/msegid/5/catid/4345" target="_blank">Canon Canada CPS program</a>, even if you’re not a professional, you can qualify for the Gold level of service and support.</p>
<p>The quality of image that the Sony system can produce is outstanding, but I don’t feel it’s worth being without a camera or lens for months if something goes wrong.</p>

ac power/battery adapter - for 1 series cameras

when I sold my 1D mk III yrs ago...I forgot to include the ac adapter...I never used it....
and the guy didn't ask for it...
so ...later I thought if I get a 1D mk Iv I can use it there...
because 1D III was the las model it was included with...
so it was an option for 1D Iv... also .. for 1Dx I, and 1Dx II
(I never got the 1D Iv...settled for 5D3...liked smaller...)
and 1DX ...
so now I have skipped two gens of 1 D series..
today I took it to the photo store and made sure it worked...and worked with 1 D Iv ..
ok... so would the mk III batteries.. they are compatible up to todaqy's 1Dx II....
but slight diff affects on performance etc..

so...
no one knew the answer for sure... and I asked to have it officially asked of Canon ...from the store..

" can I use the 1D III a/c power adapter on the 1Dx mk II?"

///////////

does anyone know for sure...or what canon's position on it is..???

I do understand the 1Dx II has newer...more powerful battery...but that all the ?...1D3 onward batteries will 'fit' and work..
just want to verify the ac thing

also what happens to warranty if I do (admit to doing) this?...

I likely will never use it..
just want to know

thanks ...if you know...or where to go to findout...

Review: Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Lens

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the brand new Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE lens. This is the widest lens currently available in the Otus line which also has 55mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4 offerings.</p>
<p>These Otus lenses have very limited users due to the cost and the fact that they’re manual focus only. However, for the photographers that don’t care about those two things, these lenses are amazing optically.</p>
<p>From TDP:</p>
<blockquote><p>Most apparent in the corner is the vignetting and its clearing causing increased brightness and contrast at narrower apertures. While many wide angle lenses render corners very noticeably blurred at their widest apertures, the Otus 28 holds things together well even into deep corners. I’m not ready to say that this lens is sharper than its longer siblings, but it performs at the top of its class. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Zeiss-28mm-f-1.4-Otus-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Boom stand

Can anyone recommend a good boom stand to purchase? I have decent stands now but i think i may be better off getting a heaver duty stand to use with a boom. It seems like the most weight any I can find will support is only like 10 pounds? I feel like my equipment may be pushing that. I am not sure but i have always been of the mind of buying more than I need.
I use PCB einsteins and PCB Octobox with misc lightweight umbrellas.
Any recommendations would be extremely helpful.
