1dx2 - Comments on shadow noise by Andy Rouse

Came across this on his website today -

The 1DX2 has MUCH better shadow detail and reduced noise than the 1DX (which was no slouch either). This means that I can push and work with the file a lot more, i.e. I don't need to be picky about getting the exposure right all the time. It's been one of the revelations of the 1DX2. It's how I define dynamic range too.

Of course, I expect the hounds of hell to budge in here as well as tell me that Canon sucks at AF, DR and what not - but it's looking WOW to me.

LensVid Posts Camera Sales Breakdown for 2015

HTML:
This week LensVid posted what is becoming their annual breakdown of what happened in the year of camera sales. Along with predictions for the coming year and a very handy infographic and video.</p>
<p>Along with the information of what actually transpired in 2015, they also review their predictions for last year, and they did pretty well.</p>
<p>Their predictions for 2016?</p>
<ul>
<li><em>2016 will be a better year for the photography market. With that said, we still expect the total number of cameras sold in 2016 to be below 30 million – or around 15% decrease compared to 2015.</em></li>
<li><em>On the other hand, we expect more DSLR sales in 2016 – with a one digit increase, and more or less the same increase in mirrorless cameras.</em></li>
<li><em>We are predicting that compact cameras will drop below 20 million and may even get close to 15 million (compared to 22 million in 2015).</em></li>
<li><em>Finally, Looking a bit ahead in the next 2 years DSLRs and mirrorless cameras will have a bigger market share than compact cameras, which we are predicting – will become a niche market before the end of this decade.</em></li>
</ul>

The Canada Gravy Train on Lenses About to End?

HTML:
We’re told that Canon Canada will soon be increasing the prices of lenses by around 20% around the end of March or early April. Americans in the know have been buying up Canadian lenses for quite some time, as the weak currency and the fact Canon Canada doesn’t have MAP pricing on lenses made for some good discounts for American shoppers.</p>
<p>We haven’t had this confirmed from Canon Canada, but it shouldn’t come as any sort of surprise to consumers on both sides of the border.</p>
<p>While the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is launching in the USA at $5999, in Canada it’s launching at $7999. There is some CPS Canada member relief though, as you should be able to get the camera body for about $6800 CAD.</p>

World Press Photo of the Year 2015 winner only uses 5DMk.II & 3 primes!

Throw away your latest equipment, you gadget-collecting dilettantes! :P

On the winning image, he commented: “The refugee story was fast moving all the time; you had to be in the zone and there was no let up. I just had a straight 24mm lens on my EOS 5D Mark II and I used my body as a tripod as it was so dark and the shutter speed (1/5sec) was so low. I only use three primes: a 14mm, 24mm and a 40mm. That’s it. I don't believe in taking monster cameras and lenses on assignment. I need to move with the subject; that’s how I work.”

Australian freelance photojournalist Warren Richardson has won the World Press Photo of the Year 2015 for a poignant image of two migrants passing a child through a barbed wire fence, as they crossed the border from Serbia into Hungary.

Now that...

....the 1DX2 and 80D have been released, there is some insight as to the path Canon is taking given what they are offering in these two cameras (and the existing 7D2).

My guess at this point is, the 6D2 is going to be the camera that sports a 28MP sensor with around 5fps at best. While the 5D4 will have a 24MP sensor and 8fps.

This makes the most sense.

The 5D4 will be better suited at 24MP to be a great all-around FF pro, wedding and event camera as is its tradition to be. Good at everything.

The 6D2 is more likely to get the 28MP as the original 6D was hailed by so many Canon owners as a good landscape camera. Enthusiasts love megapixels, and this will be a smaller, lighter and less expensive body than a 5DS, with connectivity features they will appreciate. This is the enthusiast FF that may give up some low light performance vs the 5D4 and speed (as well as AF and other features) to give a good mix of resolution and quality.

I don't envision an 8FPS camera with 28mp. Unless Canon only upgrade the 5D4 1frame...I doubt this. The 5D4 will have 1/2 the FPS as the 1DX2 top end. I think it is getting 8. With 8, I say it will lean toward 24mp to keep the data moving.

Pros who buy the 5D4 aren't infatuated with megapixels. They want clean ISO, speed and features that helps them get the shots they need quicker and easier.

With the 1DX2 having the same AF pattern and layout, the 5D4 should also be the same. The 6D2 will probably get the 45pt system. Some kind of FF version of the 19pt would be a major insult to Canon system owners. 6D2 will be "crippled" with 1 SD slot. Doubtful he 6D2 will get any decent video at all. That will belong to the 5D4. Touchscreen or tilt screen on 6D2? Who knows. It will probably be upgraded with built in connectivity of several types.

I think the rumor of two 5D4 bodies is a confusion of 6D2 and 5D4 specs. I just can't see Canon releasing (2) 5D series bodies after already having (2) 5DS bodies. That would be a total of 4 5D camera bodies out there at once. Unlikely.

It's safe to say that the 5D4 will not surpass the 1DX2 in ANY spec with the exception of megapixel count. It has always been this way. So in a way, the 1DX2, minus it's obvious advanced features like ridiculously blazing FPS, is the limit for what the 5D4 could have.

The existing 5D3/ 5DS is now the lower limit of what the 5D4 will have.

Then there are other features out there, like DPAF - that could make their way into the 5D4. These would be nice additions, but we now mostly have an upper limit and lower limit for the common specs.

How Fast is Nano USM Compared to STM?

HTML:
<p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SPj5NxH7WWU" width="728" height="409" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>In case you missed it, the above video shows the autofocus speed difference between the Nano USM version of the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and the STM version. The difference in this controlled test by Canon is definitely quite obvious.</p>
<p>What will be the first EF lens with Nano USM technology? I think we may find out at NAB in April.</p>

Park Camera</p>
<p>Don’t feel like reading about the EOS 80D and EF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM? Above are two videos, with very different levels of excitement for Canon’s latest announcements. They both will give you a good rundown of what’s new on the EOS 80D.</p>
<p>The EOS 80D does look to be a pretty good evolution of the 70D and should continue the good sales of the XXD line for Canon.</p>
<span id="pty_trigger"></span>

Question About Video

I've never done DSLR video before - I have a 70D and a Panasonic SD-60 camcorder.
If I were to start doing some video on my 70D when I download do the pictures automatically go to My Pictures and the video automatically go to My Videos?
Since I'm obviously clueless - any other words of wisdom about video? I'm pretty good with camera operation, etc. for stills, but have never even considered my DSLR for video; until now (for no particular reason).
Thanks.

<p>“In today’s world, where everyone is a photographer or videographer, we at Canon are looking to provide the tools and features that help creative-minded people stand out from the pack and get noticed. The right technology cannot make someone creative, but it will help bring a creative vision to life,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The right combination of camera and lens helps those with a vision stand out and be recognized. We look forward to seeing what this new generation of passionate artists will create with these new tools.”</p>
<p><strong>New AF System and Dual Pixel CMOS AF</strong>

The 45-point all cross-type viewfinder AF system in the new Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera, compared to 19-points in the Canon EOS 70D DSLR camera, is now wider both horizontally and vertically for easier compositions with off-center subjects. Low light AF performance has been improved all the way down to EV-3 at the center point to achieve sharp results even in extreme low-light situations. The camera’s AI (Artificial Intelligence) Servo AF II autofocusing system utilizes color tracking with a 7,560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor that automatically detects skin tone and colors to enhance tracking sensitivity, even with moving subjects that are rapidly changing pace or direction. Enhancing the ease-of-use of the new AF system is the Canon EOS 80D’s new Intelligent Viewfinder which features approximately 100% viewfinder coverage. The full coverage helps prevent photographers from missing objects that are in the corners of the scene, which can reduce the need to crop images later on.</p>
<p>Dual Pixel CMOS AF employs a new Canon CMOS sensor with which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both still imaging and phase-detection AF simultaneously to achieve dramatically improved AF performance during Live View and video shooting. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology in the Canon EOS 80D camera features enhanced tracking sensitivity and is compatible with the full line of Canon EF Series lenses, including the new Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM standard zoom lens.</p>
<p><strong>High-Quality Still and Video Image Performance</strong>

Featuring a new 24.2 megapixel APS-C Canon CMOS sensor and Canon’s superb DIGIC 6 Image Processor, as well as an improved still image ISO range of 100–16000 (Video ISO range 100–12800, both expandable to 25600), the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera is capable of producing sharp, detailed images and videos even in low-light conditions. High-speed continuous shooting up to seven frames per second (fps) combined with the 45-point all cross-type AF allows photographers to capture fast moving subjects easily and accurately, while the camera’s Scene Intelligent Auto Mode delivers optimized photos and offers outstanding scene detection for amazing results even when shooting in low light. HDR mode provides creative filter effects, such as natural, art standard, art bold, art vivid and art embossed. For added convenience, the Canon EOS 80D camera features Anti-Flicker shooting, similar to that found in the EOS 7D Mark II DSLR camera. Anti-Flicker shooting produces consistently high-quality results even when shooting in areas with fluorescent lighting or other flickering light sources by detecting the flicker cycle of the light source and shooting when brightness is near its peak.</p>
<p>When users select the EOS Movie mode, the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera offers the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD video up to 60 fps, compared to 30 fps in the Canon EOS 70D, in MP4 format and in either ALL-I or IPB compression modes with optional embedded time code. For expanded creativity the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera features HDR movie and Time-Lapse movie modes and Movie creative filters like fantasy, old movie, memory, dramatic monochrome and miniature. Movie Servo AF custom settings allow users to speed up or slow down focusing speeds, enhancing creativity and artistic expression. For added flexibility, the Canon EOS 80D digital SLR camera also features a built-in headphone jack, a built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment, and an additional stereo microphone jack.</p>
<p><strong>News Lens, Power Zoom Adapter, and Directional Stereo Microphone Enhance Video Quality</strong>

In addition to the new Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera, Canon U.S.A., Inc., is also introducing the Canon EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens, a newly designed lens with a premium exterior design that will serve as the kit lens for the new Canon EOS 80D camera. <p><!--more--></p>
<p>Within its compact body, the PENTAX K-1 features several advanced technologies that help the photographer to produce top results in a wide variety of challenging conditions. SR II Shake Reduction is a newly refined and highly sensitive five-axis shake-reduction system that is capable of reducing camera shake with a compensation range of up to five exposure steps, allowing photographers to freely move and compose – and to focus on their subjects, not the gear. SR II also facilitates other advanced PENTAX-unique features such as AA Filter Simulator, which effectively eliminates moiré effect without the need for an anti-aliasing filter, while increasing sharpness and overall image quality. Key to great autofocus performance on the K-1 is the new SAFOX 12 autofocus mechanism with 33 autofocus points, assuring fast and accurate autofocusing, even in the most demanding shooting situations.  A newly-designed optical viewfinder equipped with the famous PENTAX Pentaprism boasts a bright, nearly 100-percent field of view.</p>
<p>In addition to a long list of technological advancements, the PENTAX K-1 also features a number of convenience features, making camera operation fast and easy. Designed to move in ways never before imagined is the new Flexible-tilt LCD monitor—a first for any DSLR camera. This rugged yet highly adjustable display can be positioned to the desired angle horizontally and vertically, making it easy to shoot at challenging angles. Other significant firsts include the K-1’s Operation Assist Lights – small, white LEDs that facilitate camera operation in low-light environments, making it easy to change lenses, swap memory cards and adjust back-of-camera controls, and a Smart Function dial that allows photographers to easy select frequently-used functions without going into the LCD menu.</p>
<p>Current PENTAX lens owners will appreciate that they can incorporate their APS-C lens collection into their new PENTAX K-1 full-frame camera kit by utilizing the K-1’s Crop Mode, which offers settings in-camera for either APS-C or Full-Frame sized shooting, regardless of the attached lens. There is also an “auto” mode that detects the lens type and sets the camera accordingly.</p>
<p>Upon launch, PENTAX is offering 12 full-frame compatible lenses, including two new models being announced concurrent with the K-1 camera: the HD PENTAX-D FA 15-30mm f.2.8 ultra-wide angle zoom lens and the HD PENTAX-D FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 compact, lightweight zoom lens. (Note: separate news releases have been issued today to provide details on each lens).</p>
<p><strong>| Pricing and Availability | </strong></p>
<p>The PENTAX K-1 camera will be available April 2016 at www.ricohimaging.com and retail outlets nationwide for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $1,799.95.</p>

<hr />
<h3>Main Features</h3>
<p>1.  High-resolution, fine-gradation images supported by approximately 36.4 effective megapixels</p>
<p>The K-1 features an AA (anti-aliasing) filterless design that prioritizes image resolution, as well as the new PRIME IV imaging engine, which is capable of 14-bit RAW-format image recording. The    K-1’s unique full frame sensor and imaging engine design also allows for super-high-sensitivity shooting up to ISO 204800, producing beautiful, high-resolution images.</p>
<p>2. New-generation SR II five-axis system</p>
<ul>
<li>In-body SR II mechanism assures optimal shake reduction performance

The SR II (Shake Reduction II) five-axis mechanism enables accurate control of the large full-frame image sensor with all compatible PENTAX interchangeable lenses.* In addition to camera shake caused by pitch and yaw, it effectively compensates for camera shake caused by horizontal and vertical shift, as well as camera shake caused by roll, which is difficult to deal with by lens-installed shake reduction mechanisms. Even when taking a panning shot, this system automatically detects the direction of the camera’s movement, and efficiently controls the SR II unit to always produce the best image possible.</li>
<li>Pixel Shift Resolution System with a new motion correction function

This system uses the latest super-resolution technology, which captures four images of the same scene by shifting the image sensor by a single pixel for each image, then synthesizes them into a single composite image. Compared to the conventional Bayer system, in which each pixel has only a single color data unit, this innovative system obtains all color data within each pixel. It incorporates a new motion correction function, which automatically detects a moving object during continuous shooting.</li>
<li>Innovative AA filter simulator to minimize moiré

By applying microscopic vibrations to the image sensor, the K-1’s AA (anti-aliasing) filter simulator provides the same level of moiré reduction as an optical AA filter.</li>
<li>Supportive shooting functions

Since the K-1’s SR II unit has a flexible design that tilts the image sensor unit in all directions, it provides a host of handy shooting functions, including auto level compensation, image-composition fine-adjustment, and AstroTracer, which simplifies advanced astronomical photography using a built-in GPS module.</li>
</ul>
<p>3. Flexible tilt-type LCD monitor to accommodate various shooting angles</p>
<p>The K-1 features a newly designed, Flexible-tilt LCD monitor, which tilts horizontally, vertically or diagonally with a single action, without deviating from the lens’s optical axis. 35 degrees of horizontal and 44 degrees of vertical adjustment can be achieved; the LCD panel can even be laid flat up or down. The 3.2-inch LCD monitor features a tempered-glass front panel for added durability, a unique air-gapless construction effectively reduces reflection, and a new Outdoor View Setting mode allows the user to instantly choose the desired monitor brightness level.</p>
<p>4. Newly developed SAFOX 12 with 33 sensor points and full-frame-proportioned AF frame</p>
<p>The SAFOX 12 AF sensor module features 33 AF sensors (25 cross-type sensors positioned in the middle). The center sensor and the two sensors located just above and below it are designed to detect the light flux of an F2.8 lens, making it easy to obtain pinpoint focus on a subject when using a large-aperture lens.</p>
<p>5. Upgraded PENTAX Real-Time Scene Analysis System, with application of artificial  intelligence technology</p>
<p>The K-1’s advanced PENTAX Real-Time Scene Analysis System performs near-instant analysis of exposure, color, movement and other factors. Combined with a breakthrough artificial intelligence technology called deep learning, the K-1 instantly optimizes settings for even the most difficult shooting situations.</p>
<p>6. Easy-to-focus optical viewfinder with nearly 100-percent field of view</p>
<p>Newly developed for its 35mm full-frame design, the K-1’s optical viewfinder provides a nearly 100-percent field of view and an approximately 0.7-times magnification. A Natural Bright Matt III focusing screen allows ease of focusing and a true-to-life rendition of defocused areas in the viewfinder image.</p>
<p>7. High-speed continuous shooting with a top speed of approximately 4.4 images per second</p>
<p>The K-1 has a larger shutter unit that easily accommodates the camera’s full-frame image sensor and provides high-speed, high-accuracy control of the mirror unit. A high-speed data transmission system incorporated in the PRIME IV imaging engine allows the user to continuously record as many as 17 images in the RAW format (or a maximum of 70 images in the JPEG Best format) in a single sequence, at a top speed of approximately 4.4 images per second.</p>
<p>8. Supportive shooting functions to improve picture-taking efficiency and operational comfort</p>
<ul>
<li>Operation assist light function, which provides LED lights above the lens mount, behind the LCD monitor, at the memory car slot, and at the cable switch terminal to facilitate fast and easy operation in poorly lit settings.</li>
<li>Key lock function, which prevents erroneous operation of the four-way controller and other exposure-related control buttons.</li>
<li>Smart function, which allows the user to swiftly choose and set desired functions using just the function dial and the set dial on the camera’s upper panel, without referring to the menu screen on the LCD monitor.</li>
<li>Control panel customize function allows the user to change aspects of the on-screen menu.</li>
</ul>
<p>9. Compact, solid body with dustproof, weather-resistant construction</p>
<p>Constructed of sturdy yet lightweight magnesium alloy with the inclusion of 87 sealing parts in the body, the K-1 also boasts a dustproof, weather-resistant and cold-resistant construction.</p>
<h3>Other Features</h3>
<ul>
<li>Wi-Fi operation allowing camera control and image transfer to tablet or smartphone via the free ImageSync app</li>

6D + LAN Wifi

Hi

I noted the 50STM lens profile is avaialable and didn't come with my camera. So I want to connect the camera to my laptop (I don't have a smartphone) and uplaod the profile.. I'm assuming I can do this on wifi.

Laptop does WPA protocols, Camera does WPS.. and never the twain shall meet, so I can't do a direct connection.

but the router does everything.

Next I connect the camera to the network and I can see it from the laptop. They have adjacent IP addresses (192.168.1.66 / 192.168.1.65) I can also ping the camera.

I'm trying to use EOSutility (1 & 2) but I can't get this to work, it simply behaves as though the camera does not exist

I unplugged the internet and turned off my firewall as when I previously did this I successfully got remote shooting but only by killing the firewall.. but now I'm getting no joy at all.

is there something else I'm unaware of?

Any ideas?

Firmware Updates: What's possible and what's probable

With Nikon releasing the D500 and Canon now offering a very nice upgrade to the 70D with the new 80D, it prompts me to raise a topic that I will probably regret starting.

Which is just what is reasonable and practical for firmware updates?

As a former owner of the original 7D, I recall how Canon essentially gave us a new camera through a major firmware update – for free.

I wonder if, with the new D500 and Nikon now starting to compete with a pro-level ASP-C body, and with some of the nice new features of the 80D (additional f8 focusing points for example) if Canon will:

a) shorten the refresh time for the 7DII or
b) again reward owners with a major firmware update.

I suspect we will see less time between the 7DII and 7DIII, thanks to Nikon returning to the market in that product segment. But, since the 7DII is fairly "young" I do wonder if Canon might decide to offer up some firmware upgrades as an incentive to lengthen the life cycle of the camera.

I'm no engineer of any kind so I have no idea what is possible or not possible with firmware upgrades, but I am assuming that some refinements in autofocus, fps, etc., could be possible.

What do others think? Do you believe Canon might repeat their previous strategy and give us a 7D II.2?

If so, what features would be possible and desirable?

Lion lense

Stupid me, took the Tamron lens to Africa without actually getting acquainted with it first.
First, it zooms the wrong way. Not like Canons do.
Second, it is quite long and heavy and does not fit in my regular camera cases.
Third, the animals get worried when this thing is pointed at them and they seek cover.

Other than that, I fount the picture quality up to 400mm OK full open and 600mm acceptable at f/8.
You have to use manual focus every now and then which is not a surprise. AE seems to have some issues as well, especially shooting against the light. Compensate according to the histogram.

The Grid: Canon 1DX mark with Rudy Winston, Peter Miller, and Damian Strohmeyer

The two guys who shot the super bowl with the 1DX mark ii were on an episode of the grid. It is a difficult video to watch because it is so very long. However if you have an extra hour in your day and want to hear everything you possibly can about the new 1DX mark ii then here is the link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n_wTSDkvu8&t=4098s

If you don't want to watch it, here is what I found relevant (most I already knew):
-14 fps is noticeable and desired over 12 fps
-High ISO is noticeably better with much less chroma noise than the 1DX
-Autofocus is noticeably better with quicker acquisition than the 1DX
-Dynamic range is noticeably better with more details in the shadows
-There is something about the files that make them more pleasing with less need to adjust in post
-The colors are nicer and more vibrant, even at higher ISOs
-A mirrorless camera cannot replace a pro DSLR for sports photography

And what I found to be the most amazing thing is that a pro sports photographer shooting the super bowl uses the single center AF point to track subjects and get his shot, and the others agreed with him. All this talk of intelligent subject tracking and 3D tracking, but when it comes to a one of the best pros out there, the uses the center point only and manages to get amazing shots.

Canon MP-E 65mm refresh rumors

Has anyone heard of a refresh for Canon's MP-E 65mm? I've heard from a couple of macro photographers that they couldn't get their current MP-E 65mm lenses repaired because the parts were not available. So does that signal a MP-E 65mm II might be coming, or is the lens simply going to fade out? I just don't see Canon dropping such a unique lens, especially because a lot of people buy it and a Canon body just to shoot macro.
