Basic questions about getting started with a lighting kit

I'm borrowing a Hensel 2 strobe lighting kit without ever using one before. I'm just trying to understand the basic concept of how to use the lights from a technical standpoint and not setting them up to achieve good lighting with placement, etc.

The strobe that has the cable to trigger it from the camera has a button labeled "Press for options" and it lets me choose a value from 5.0 - 10. 1. What is this value? How do you choose what value to set this strobe to?

Appreciate any help and putting up with my newb questions.

Lots of Sensor & AF Patents Emerge

HTML:
<a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_rumours.html" target="_blank">Keith over at Northlight</a> has spotted a lot of sensor and autofocus patents that have made their way through the United States Patent Office.</p>
<p>There are patents related to autofocus, auto autofocus calibration (we had heard about “intelligent AF” in the past), on sensor A/D as well as more stacked “foveon style” sensor patents.</p>
<p>Keith gives a <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_rumours.html" target="_blank">full breakdown of the patents here</a>.</p>

EOS-1D X Mark II Announcement Next Week [CR2]

HTML:
<p>We were told a little while ago that there were <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/invites-for-february-canon-press-event-going-out-cr3/">media invites sent out</a> for the first week of February, and all assumptions were that it was for the EOS-1D X Mark II.</p>
<p>We now have a few more people confirming an announcement on Monday or Tuesday of next week, it’ll all depend where you are on the planet.</p>
<p>We do find it strange that Canon has opted not to tease the new camera, that always made things a little more interesting.</p>

Canon Working on Full Frame Fixed Lens Camera? [CR1]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that Canon is readying a fixed lens full frame camera. It sounds like a camera to compete with the Leica Q and Sony RX1R II. We’re told the camera will have a 35mm f/2L IS lens. Such a camera would likely cost at least $3000USD. Remember, CP+ is coming at the end of February and that is sometimes a show Canon makes a splash at.</p>
<p>This is the first time we’ve heard of such a camera coming, so treat the information accordingly.</p>

Questions about original 5D flying mirrors.

Hi Folks.
I'm buying a 5D (original) as a first foray in to FF, I know support has finished, and it seems very few of the cameras here have had the mirror repair.
I can't seem to find answers to a couple of queries.
First question.
Are all the original 5D's affected by the flying mirror issue or was it up to a serial number?
Second.
Is it only possible to determine if the fix has been done by looking at the mirror, or did they put a mark in the battery compartment like some other fixes?
If the camera I'm looking at has not been fixed, should I walk away or is the mirror fault rare enough to be of little concern. I'd sooner not walk away as this camera looks very clean from the pictures and is not on auction, so I can get it, all the auction cameras have gone past the price of this one.
Third.
If the camera hasn't been fixed is it worth carefully running a bead of adhesive down the edge to replicate the fix? Not you understand with any intention to deceive, but to safe guard the rear elements of my lenses!
Lastly.
If the answer to q3 is yes, what adhesive would be safe to use inside the camera, I'm guessing things like superglue would be in the no pile, too much vapour and too brittle for repeated shock loadings.

Thanks for any input on this.

Cheers, Graham.

Patent: Tamron 85mm f/1.4 VC USD

HTML:
The photography world is (im)patiently waiting for Sigma to release the 85mm f/1.4 Art series, but it looks like Tamron could beat them to it with an 85mm f/1.4 of their own, along with the added bonus of vibration control. <a href="http://egami.blog.so-net.ne.jp/2016-01-25" target="_blank">A patent for such an optical formula</a> from Tamron has appeared.</p>
<p>Patent Publication No. 2016-12082 (Google Translated)</p>
<ul>
<li>Published 2016.1.21</li>
<li>Filing date 2014.6.30</li>
<li>f = 87.5187</li>
<li>Fno = 1.4578</li>
<li>ω = 13.8585 °</li>
</ul>
<p>We haven’t heard anything about a 85mm f/1.4 Art series lens being announced by Sigma any time soon. We think such a lens would be perfect for introduction at Photokina in September 2016.</p>

Cracked lens housing

My 5D with a 24-70 F2.8 II fell off a bed last week. The housing on the lens is cracked and the body seems to be okay.

If I push the housing back to close the crack, the lens will focus. Image, at least of the back screen (including 100% mag) seems okay. I have not had a change to review this on my computer.

Any idea how much a CPS repair will cost (even rough estimate is okay),

Forum UI changes

Could you please change the Canon Rumors watermark which is being added behind quoted text. It is very distracting and makes the quoted text borderline unreadable.

Attached is what it look like on my screen. (running Chrome)

I've also added another another image where I compare current 100 opacity to 50% opacity.

Lens Selection Help

Hey all, new guy here! I'm looking for advise on selecting a new lens or 2 for an upcoming trip to Disney and to use as general purpose walkaround lenses. I will mostly be photographing my wife and 6 month old daughter. I have thought about getting a fast wide prime to try and take photos on some of the dark rides like the Haunted Mansion. I have a Canon t4i (I am very aware of the crop factor already thanks) with the kit 18-55, 55-250 IS II, 100mm macro, and 40mm pancake. I would like to keep my walkaround kit to 2 lenses. I've been looking at soo many different options, watching youtube reviews, and reading other threads on here that my eyes are starting to bleed.

For zoom lenses I've been looking at:

Canon 16-35mm f/4L

Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 (nervous about the reported focus issues)

Canon 24-70 f/4L

For primes I've been looking at:

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM

Canon 35 f/2 IS

Canon 50 f/1.8 STM (it is cheap and get great reviews, so why not!)

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Autofocus Talk

HTML:
We got this from <a href="http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1406985/4#13379076" target="_blank">Fred Miranda</a>, which is a forum I frequently read.</p>
<blockquote><p>For me, the obvious feature of the 1DX Mk2 is its AF and tracking capabilities over the 1DX. Not only is the AF faster, when using a 2X TC on a 500/600mm f4 lens, the new camera will allow all focusing points to be active even when the effective aperture is f8. On the 1DX, only the centre AF point and 4 surrounding points (with AF area expansion) are effective. I understand there will also be a multi-frame silent shooting mode instead of the single shooting silent mode on the 1DX.</p></blockquote>
<p>If we go by other things we’ve been told about the EOS-1D X Mark II, there are some similarities, though the exact information may not match up perfectly.</p>

Canon to Surprise With New Mirrorless Camera

HTML:
We weren’t told much, but we were told that Canon will “surprise a lot of people” with one of their next mirrorless cameras. We weren’t told if it was an APS-C or full frame mirrorless camera, but I don’t think there’s much that would surprise people if it was a crop camera.</p>
<p>The same source said there has been internal talk at Canon about no longer playing catch-up in emerging segments, this including cinema and mirrorless. It may sound arrogant, but there’s those that feel if Canon gets fully behind mirrorless, they’re the one brand that could help the segment finally reach the masses.</p>
<p>There have been rumors that the EOS M line could get an announcement for CP+ next month, alongside the EOS-1D X Mark II.</p>

6D autofocus anomaly

I was out today shooting birds in the front yard using a 6D and a 100-400MkII. I had the camera set to the center autofocus point. When aiming the center AF point at a branch I set up for the birds to perch on, I couldn't get a consistent lock when the AF point was directly on the branch. Now this branch isn't very wide - say about 1/2 - 3/4" but if I moved the camera to where the branch was centered between the center AF point in the view finder and the circle that surrounds that AF point, at about 11 o'clock, I could focus every time. I'm about 5 feet from the branch.

I'm pretty sure this requires Canon to investigate, but I wanted to ask the group if there could be something I'm doing wrong, or other things to try. I'm shooting song birds (cardinals, blue jays, titmouse), so they aren't big to begin with and I depend on that center AF point. I also feel that the camera hunts more with the 100-400, where as my 60D doesn't appear to have a problem with it. I can't say I've noticed this behavior before, but then again, I just now have a lens capable of 400mm.

Any ideas?

FF - 6D, or wait of 6DII?

Hi.

I am an amateur shooter, I've been saving for a little while with the view of getting the 6D.. some cash has unexpetidly appeared and I now have enough to get even a 5DIII... however rumors seem to suggest a new generation of sensors starting with the 1DXII is just around the corner.. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume a 5DIV then a 6DII will appear later this year with similarly upgraded sensors.

I've made a list of what I want from a new camera body, roughly in order, although the first few items are all, for me, essential, I'm currently shooting with a 30D.

I want :

Much better low light ability, more the merrier.
Shallower DoF (I already use wide primes)
AutoISO
AFMA
improved AF system (primarily I want it to work in low light I don't particulalry use my camera for sports)
liveview focussing
better resolution (which means anything made in the last 5 years)
better DR at base ISO (30D is 10.8bit according to DxO, I'd like at least 2 more stops)
ability to slip in a fine grain focus screen for use with wide primes.
bigger brighter viewfinder
a level would be handy but not essential

I want to keep:
The general toughness I've got in my 30D.. it's been dropped a few times.. not too far and not onto concrete, but it's survived every time with AF being where it was when I bought it.
AF point selection by the multi-controller button. (I know the 6D doesn't have it)

so do I wait and see what a 6DII looks like or do I go for the current 6D now?
