Tokina EF-S 14-20mm f/2 lens announced

FYI if you hadn't seen this:

http://www.tokinalens.com/news/press/N0000054/

http://petapixel.com/2016/01/02/tokina-announces-a-14-20mm-f2-lens-for-canon-and-nikon-aps-c-cameras/

725g for a crop f/2 zoom is heavy but not terribly so, but the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 is very close to that weight, offers a larger zoom range and is fractionally faster. That said, going down to 14mm for crop is a nice add -- the Sigma's 18mm wide end would handcuff a number of folks for a standard zoom.

Crop to FF Questions:

1. Would 24mm (24-70 2.8 II) be good-to-go in most cases for astrophotography?

2. 40mm or 50 STM for street/light travel?

3. Would the new 100-400 not be too bad indoors with the high ISO capability (especially for stage performances)?

4. Does the 24-70 somewhat replace an 85 1.8 and then the 135 2.0 being a nice complement to the 24-70?

Canon EOS C100 & EOS C100 Mark II Price Drops

<p>It looks like prices on the original Cinema EOS C100 and it’s replacement, the Cinema EOS C100 Mark II have been given significant price drops at B&H Photo.</p>
<p>If you’re looking to get into a Cinema EOS camera and are on a budget, both of these cameras will help you create great content.</p>
<p>There is also a $500 price drop on the Canon XC10 4K camcorder. <em>thanks KrisK</em></p>

<p>Does this mean we’ve got a new Cinema EOS camera on the way that will sit between the $4500 EOS C100 Mark II and the $16,000, 4K EOS C300 Mark II? That’s definitely a possibility, as Canon does need an “affordable” 4K solution in the Cinema EOS lineup. We’ve always felt that Canon would introduce a better EF mount 4K solution than just putting 4K in a DSLR like the 5D Mark IV, as cinematographers generally prefer the usability of the Cinema EOS cameras.</p>

Lens broken - Need new 24-70(105mm)

On New Years Eve, my old 28-70mm L lens got broken, when we had to escape from an building in Munich.
Now the zoom ring scratches when turned.

Now I need an new one for hiking and climbing for my 6D body.
24mm-70 or 105mm in an (better) quality.
Price lower than 1000(maximal 1200€)€, as i want to buy an new prime 400mm too.

Which one to buy? The Canon 24-70 IS L 4 or the Tokina 24-70??

Why thet 70-200 4 L is not a variable aperture lens of 1.4-4

I'm enjoying the 70-200 F4 IS L lens I recently got, but it made me wonder why the lens is a fix aperture.
The front element looks like it is 50mm, so using the formula of D*A=f (D diameter, A aperture, f focal length) I get the following theoretically possible:
70mm - 1.4
100mm - 2.0
140mm - 2.8
200mm - 4

Even if it would not be a 1.4 at the wide end, it could be 2.8 till about 135mm. Would that not be better then the fixed aperture?
What are the reasons for keeping it everywhere at 4?

LP-E6, LP-E6N and LC-E6E chargers?

Hi Folks.
I have after market LP-E6 (900mAh) and LP-E6N (2600mAh) batteries, the LP-E6 are a couple of years old, well used and reliable in my 7D, I now have LP-E6Ns for my 7DII, I also have the original LC-E6E chargers for each camera.
I have noticed that the LP-E6 won't charge in the new LC-E6E charger, they do the flash once per second (as in <50%) then go to rapid continual flashing (defective unit?) I assume this is due to changes in the chipping of the batteries.
I have also found that the older 7D charger will not charge the LP-E6N equivalents to full capacity, I discovered this after a couple of times of noticing that one battery showed up as much lower capacity on the battery info menu after a short amount of use. I then checked them straight off the chargers and confirmed this, showing 80%. Taking the charged (green light) battery off the old charger and putting it on the new it would resume with the 3 flashes per second (>75%) for several minutes, maybe even tens of minutes (I wasn't counting) before turning green.
This is all with the aftermarket batteries and so far I have not replicated the situation with the OEM batteries, nor do I expect to, I figure this is another penalty for aftermarket batteries and is likely to do with the increased mAh rating of the aftermarket items.
Conclusion, these chargers are not 100% forwards / backwards compatible with aftermarket batteries, but then if I was making them I'd not be worried about that either! :D
I posted this more as an informative item and to see if anyone else has noticed this behaviour rather than looking for an explanation, however any insight that might help understand this is welcome.

Cheers, Graham.

What to Expect Next Week at CES 2016

HTML:
At the beginning of December, <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/ces-announcements-expected-from-canon/">we posted what we thought</a> you could expect from Canon at CES 2016 in Las Vegas during the first week of January, and what we figured would be coming hasn’t changed.</p>
<p>We only expect a couple of PowerShot and perhaps VIXIA announcements.</p>
<p>As mentioned in the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/consumers-are-inspired-at-the-2016-ces-show-with-canon-see-impossible/">Canon press release,</a> they’ll be doing a lot of 8K demoes, which stems from the 8K development announcement we saw at the Canon EXPO back in September. We expect to learn new things about Canon’s 8K future in April at NAB.</p>
<p>There will be no DSLR announcement at this time, we’ve said all along that DSLR announcements at CES are very rare, and will more likely be held for CP+ in February or a standalone announcement, which is more likely for the EOS-1D X Mark II.</p>

Consumers Are Inspired At The 2016 CES Show With Canon See Impossible

HTML:
<p><em>Interactive Booth at CES 2016 Features Canon’s 8K Era and Three Unique Environments Demonstrating Real World Solutions for Canon Imaging Products</em></p>
<p><b>MELVILLE, N.Y.</b> — At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, NV January 6-9, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, will challenge attendees to see the impossible at booth #13106 in the Central Hall. Canon’s booth will feature a Canon 8K Ride Experience where attendees can see the future of visual imaging and experience, firsthand, the physical and emotional reactions that take place when an 8K video projected on a large screen simulates a physical journey. There will also be an 8K Photo Gallery that displays precise moments from an 8K video. The Canon booth itself will be composed of three environments simulating a home, an office, and a professional studio. Within each zone Canon will offer hands-on demonstrations of current real-world imaging solutions for attendees to experience themselves.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>“We believe there really is only one way for our valued customers and users to truly understand and embody Canon See Impossible and that is through seeing and experiencing real life examples of how Canon digital imaging solutions can impact their daily lives on both a professional and personal level,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are excited for attendees to experience these solutions at our CES 2016 booth as well as have them enjoy the unique Canon 8K Ride Experience, which will be new to most attendees.”</p>
<p>Introduced at Canon EXPO, held this past September in NYC, this 8K Ride Experience projects 8K video on large screens surrounding viewers to give them a unique sense of movement while sitting or standing still. By experiencing imagery from all angles, the technology can simulate a physical journey often sparking a physical or emotional reaction.</p>
<p>In the home environment attendees can experience the power of an image as photo enthusiasts, crafters, and artists will have the opportunity to take part in hands-on demonstrations using Canon cameras and lenses to create different perspectives and print the images captured on Canon PIXMA printers. The office environment will allow visitors to see a smarter workplace showing how Canon products work together to streamline daily activities in a real-world office setting. The future of creativity can be seen as Canon invites visitors to step into a professional studio environment and experience a day in the life of a photographer or videographer. Speakers and demonstrations will feature the full range of Canon imaging products and how they meet the needs of today’s creative image makers.</p>
<p>At the booth’s center, attendees can navigate up the Canon Lens Tower, which showcases large and long-zoom lenses from Canon’s line of more than 103 Canon EF Series lenses as well as Canon’s innovative CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm lens capable of shooting brilliant 4K video at up to 1500mm with its built-in 1.5x extender. The tower will offer a unique and innovative 360 degree visual perspective of the CES show floor. Visitors are also encouraged to browse Canon’s photo gallery featuring images captured with Canon EOS DSLR and PowerShot cameras and printed on Canon imagePROGRAF and PIXMA PRO inkjet printers including the new imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 printer. Canon service and support technicians will be on hand to answer questions via live chat as well as demonstrate Canon Maintenance Service live in the booth.</p>

My travel kit

My wife and I are off to Mysore in India on Saturday. We have booked a guide for bird watching and will be arranging further nature and sightseeing trips once there.

For bird watching, I have decided to take the 5DIII and the 300mm f/2.8 II with 1.4x and 2xTC s, and my wife will take the 7DII + 100-400mm II + 1.4xTC. For really long distances, I’ll put the 300+2xTC on the 7DII. (If I was travelling by myself, I'd probably take just the wife's kit, but with the two of us there is more flexibility.)

I am not taking any more lenses for the 7DII and 5DIII. For more general wild life and sightseeing, I’ll have the G3 X, with it 24-600 effective fov. In addition, I’ll take the EOS-M with the 11-22 and the 22mm pancake. The reason for this is I don’t like having obviously expensive and large gear around cities. Further, the EOS-M + 22mm is great for holding against the eyepiece of the telescope that the guide will have for digiscoping. The EOS-M + 22mm is also a great pocket camera. The 11-22 gives a nice, compact wide angle set up.

What would you take?

SL1 and 10-18mm seems better option than mirrorless

I've gotten heavily into hiking in the past two years. I'm finding that my full-frame 6D is more camera than I want to carry, while my Sony RX100 is too limited particularly at the wide angle. So I'm considering a Canon SL1 with the 10-18mm STM as the go-to lens.

The most appealing thing is that I can get a complete kit with 10-18, 18-55 (which I will try and sell) and 55-250, all for about $800 CAD total. That's the price of the Sony 11-18mm or Olympus 9-18mm alone, and my priority is the ultra-wide zoom range, which I'll typically shoot at 5.6 or above anyhow. And then, the SL1 is compatible with my 6D and other gear, and the family can use it more easily as well, especially with the hybrid AF.

The only downsides to the SL1 for me are it's thicker size-wise (smallest concern), it has only a decent sized viewfinder, however I still find I almost always prefer and optical finder, and finally no flip up LCD for low angle shots. But I think I can live with these compromises.

So my kit would be SL1, 10-18, 55-250 and 24 or 40 pancake. Or for really light, the 10-18 and the 50stm. I have an iPhone 6+ for grab and go shots.

Any comments for or against my logic here?

5DSr morie

I have used the 5DSr for countless wedding and portrait shoots. I have, to my knowledge, never seen an issue with morie. Actually I thought it would never be an issue. Well I finally found a shot that had plenty and man is it ugly. It is strange that it happened in this particular shot and not countless others with more pattern. BTW this is a very tight crop of a much larger image.

Which cards for 7D II?

I am looking for new CF/SDHC cards for the 7DII.

Which one to use? Which works best with the 7DII? Staying with SanDisk?
Which one should I prefer for wildlife for fast shotseries? Do I need superfast speed for clearing the cam memory?

Should I buy an Wlan-card for the sdhc-slot?
Or is it better to use an sdhc-card on the 7Dii?

Much thanks for your advice

Canon Still Working on New 800mm Lens [CR1]

HTML:
We’ve been told over the years that Canon is working on a new 800mm lens, which is likely true and such development does in fact take years. The current 800mm f/5.6L IS has been a tough sell since the launch of the EF 600mm f/4L IS II, as the image quality you get from the 600mm lens and a 1.4 III teleconverter is generally considered better and you get an 840mm f/5.6 lens.</p>
<p>We’ve seen patents for a new 800mm lens in both DO and non-DO forms and thought we’d have seen a new one by now to at least match the materials and performance of the 300-600mm lenses that were launched 5 or so years ago.</p>
<p>An unknown source says Canon is developing an 800mm f/5.6L with a 1.4 TC built into it like the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x., which would give you an 1120mm f/6.3 when the teleconverter is put in place.</p>
<p>We’re not sure how many big white lenses Canon is currently selling, but it feels that there may be some market saturation for the lenses and we’re not sure there ever needs to be an 800mm replacement. It’s going to have to offer something quite unique to get current owners of big white lenses to get on board.</p>
<p>We wonder if some sort of a supertelephoto zoom above 600mm would be doable and cost effective.</p>
<p>An appropriate amount of salt recommended for this one.</p>

Canon 24mm 1.4 L mk I for astro?

Hey guys,

So I got a second hand Canon 24mm f/1.4 L mk I for Christmas. It wasn't so much a gift as it was a relative giving me a good chunk of his old gear since he now shoots mirrorless.

Canon glass seems notorious for not being great for astro work, but I figured I'd ask: am I wasting my time thinking I can use this for astro? Canon never seems to have good coma, but I've heard you can stop it down to to 2.8 help correct this. All my other lenses are f/4.

Any ideas? And before you say, "sell it," that's currently not an option due to the terms of this "gift" being unclear. I'm not sure whether it's an outright gift or a long-term loan. My relative who gave this to me is a little funny in that regard and asking whether I can sell it is not an really on the cards as asking would most likely result in him wanting it back (my family is weird, trust me).

At least I got an EX420 flash out of it, which I definitely can use and don't need to consider selling.

Image quality of Canon 400mm L IS DO II at the usage of 1.4x or 2x converter

Hi Guys!

The 500mm and 600mm lenses are to heavy for me. I saw the Canon 400mm L IS DO II 4.0 lens, whos weight is lower than the other lenses.

How far is the image quality of the lens sinking, when I put an converter in?

My Cam is able to handle the 2x converter with the central AF point.
I want to use ist for wildlife and shoot my children at sports.

Ode to Youngnuo

I've enjoyed my Yongnuo RF-603 II flash triggers for a couple years now. I couple them with their Yn560‑iii flashes generally. Started to use them as a camera trigger over the holidays, and they worked great.

The reason I started the thread, though was to praise them for their toughness. I (for the second time) forgot the trigger in a pocket and put it through both the washer and the dryer. Upon removing (quite hot to the touch), I put batteries back in turned it on, and if triggered the camera. Used that same trigger for two more days with no problem at all.

I don't expect much else of my electronic equipment is near as tough.

Is Nikon Finally About to Replace D300s?

HTML:
<a href="http://nikonrumors.com/2015/12/27/still-no-reliable-inforumors-on-a-new-nikon-dx-flagship-dslr-camera-d400d500.aspx/#more-100602" target="_blank">Nikon Rumors</a> via <a href="http://www.naturalart.ca/voice/blog.html" target="_blank">Brad Hill</a> has posted that there are whispers that Nikon is finally readying a flagship DX camera in the form of a D400 (or D500). Nikon Rumors had heard in the past that there could be a “double launch” alongside the Nikon D5, which has <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/more-nikon-d5-specifications/" target="_blank">recently leaked</a> and is expected to be announced in mid January.</p>
<p>From Brad Hill:</p>
<blockquote><p>Anyway…in the last 10 days I’ve received 3 separate and independent communications (via email) telling me that a semi-pro (or even higher) quality DX body from Nikon is going to be announced in January. Two of these three sources have been spot-on in the past.</p>
<p>The interesting thing is that I’m getting scant specs, but those I am getting are consistent from all 3 sources – DX format, 10 fps, a “very good” buffer and selling for around $2300 USD. This consistency could say something about rumour credibility (or it could mean all 3 of my sources got THEIR information from the same source). Note that at least one of the sources derives their income from Nikon.</p></blockquote>
<p>Nikon Rumors themselves have yet to receive anything reliable on the subject, but that could change shortly.</p>
