Serious design flaw with the new 430EX III-RT ?

So compared with the outgoing 430EX II flash, the newer flash has two AF-assist beam options: the default rapid flash (think AF-assist of the built-in Rebel flashes) and the normal infrared beam. No idea why the rapid flash method is set to default but whatever, you can change it to the more familiar infrared method so no big deal or so I thought.

Except for the fact that when in the infrared AF-assist mode, this beam is available only when the camera is set on the center AF point. You would think it's a bug that could be remedied by firmware, but the manual confirms this behavior as the intended "feature".

From page 87 of the manual...
"When [Infrared mode] is set, manually select the center AF point. When an AF point other than the center AF point is selected, focusing with the AF-assist beam is not possible (AF-assist beam is not emitted)."

Not sure what they're thinking. I guess this aligns with their decision to leave out any kind of AF-assist on the ST-E3-RT. Do they really think their modern cameras' AF ability is that good in the dark? Or do they want people to start using the rapid flash method to focus in the dark (I can see this annoying/confusing subjects at events, not to mention a longer lock time and probably quicker battery drain)?

New sensor color filter technology?

Just saw this on my local news website: http://www.ksl.com/?sid=37193274&nid=1012&title=smartphone-cameras-could-see-significant-improvement-thanks-to-u-innovation&s_cid=queue-14

It appears to be a departure from red/green/blue color filter arrays that allows far more light to be collected.

For those here with advanced knowledge of sensor design, what do you think?

What makes a good arca-swiss tripod clamp

I am thinking of buying a arca-swiss compatible clamp to mount onto my Manfrotto head that uses the rc2 plates. I realize buying a new head would likely be the preferable choice but I am not a professional and am looking to save a bit here. This will bring me into the arca-swiss world which seems to be the standard and allow me to get a nice L plate. I notice there are different types of arca-swiss compatible clamps: short screw knobs, long screw knobs, leavers, both, not to mention levels and graduations and sizes/shapes. What would you be looking for?

EF 35mm f/1.4L & EF 35mm f/1.4L II Compared

HTML:
It seems the new Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II is being compared to the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art more often than any other lens, most likely due to the price difference between the two. There are a lot of Canon photographers that wouldn’t buy a Sigma lens over a comparable Canon for a host of reasons, we usually hear autofocus, build quality, totaly image quality and support as the main reasons photographers stick with Canon brand lenses.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.dcfever.com/news/readnews.php?id=14718&page=1" target="_blank">DC Fever</a> has posted a comparison between the EF 35mm f/1.4L and EF 35mm f/1.4L II to give you a good idea of the differences between the two lenses. You’ll immediately see the advantages of the new lens outside of the center of the frame, there’s really no comparison. Mix together the weather sealing, latest autofocus technology and the BR lens, the EF 35mm f/1.4L II is definitely a worthwhile upgrade if you’re in the market.</p>

Canon Germany Winter Promotion 2015 - "10gewinnt" from Nov. 1st to Jan. 31st

Hey there to all German Canon Promotion fans!

This year we have something new here for the Winter Promotion 2015:
"10gewinnt" - you no longer get a certain cashback value for some product but you get 100% back.
WOW! :o But only every tenth ::) ::) ::)

But everyone is a winner, because the other 90% get a 25% dicount for a Canon fotobook „hdbook“.

As I am quite skilled in statistics and probability theory that 10% chance is not my deal - as you probably could read between the lines (A bird in the hand ...).
I don't play lottery and I would only participate here if I was already planning to get a specific product.

There are still some older promotions running, e.g. the up to 300,- € back for a 5D (all: Mk3, DS, DSR). Seems they've been renewed.
Some others have ended in October.

If you're interested feel free to look here for the details and listed products (in German):

Oddity in Nissin i40 flash slave -- or not?

I was out on the street at 5am with the bicyclist posing in front of me. We had been asked to do a simple shot so on a low tripod to allow me to drag the shutter to render street and commercial lights while a 580EX2 -- set for Manual -- was on the shoe of the 1DsMark3. Assistant to my right had, in hand, a Nissin i40 and the plan was to side-light the subject with this little unit firing slaved -- optically. I have often used this small flash in interiors I shoot when some dark nook requires a slaved light kick in a hard-to-hide-the-flash place. That experience ws always with my Einsteins.

As usual, I set the Nissin for Slave-Digital ("Sd") and to my annoyance it did not fire even when placed right in front of the 580 (as a test). We gave up the sidelight idea, had only a minute or two to finish.

Later I tested in my office and saw that with the 580ex2 I could get slaved fire from the i40 at "Sf", what Nissin calls, "slave-film".

I don't know what is different than my experience with my Einsteins. Yes, we were outside which can be a problem for slaves, but it was still dark... no ambient to speak of. I was on Manual so no preflash. I was shooting at 1/8/or 1/16th, but the unit didn't fire right in front of the 580's tube as a test.

I don't think I can call Nissin but maybe I will try... Thoughts anyone?

Seeking advice

Hi, I just upgraded from the 7D to 7D II, and I am looking at the lenses I want to upgrade next. My most challenging subjects are sports. I use the shorty 40 and nifty 50 for basketball, f/2 100 for volleyball and love my Tamronosaurus Rex 150-600 for football (all small school high school). At least one of the schools I cover has the reputation as the worst lit gym in the state. The Tamron does everything I need for football but I would like to improve my kit for the other sports. I have a personal budget of $500-$1,000 per year for new lenses. I would like to get f/2.8 zooms, covering 24-70 and 70-200 over the next few years. My question is, should I sock my money away and get the Canon L lenses over 4 years or are the Sigma-Tamron-Tokina options good enough for half the price. My top criteria would be auto-focus performance in AI servo mode.

Gear setup: Two 5D mark iii's and a 1DX or a 5DS and a 1DX?

Hey everyone, so right now my kit is Two 5D mark iii's and a 1DX, I started off with one 5D and got a second one a year later to avoid having to switch lenses as many times but about a month ago I picked up the 1DX as it was extremely cheap at my local camera store, but now I'm starting to think about selling both of my 5d mark iii's and pick up a 5ds instead as the only reason I even got the second 5d iii instead of the 5ds was because of the better low light and also smaller file sizes but both of those things aren't a problem anymore as my 1DX does amazing at high ISO and I recently upgraded a lot of my computer/card storage.

So my question is what would you do in this situation? sell the two 5D Mark iii's and get a 5DS? or keep the two mark iii and have one as a back up my 1DX + 5DIII combo?

Writing my Christmas list

So before I get the "what do you want for Christmas" question I thought I'd be ready this year.

I've been without a flash gun since going digital about 4 years ago, limping along with the popup flash and a business card to bounce it, a big downgrade on my variable angle, variable "zoom" bounce on my film system.

So... as the intention is to buy a 6D next year, I want a gun/system that's 30D and 6D compatible, that I can trigger wirelessly, and is cheap yet works well. I am NOT even the slightest bit pro, so I don't need something that will last 20 years in a studio or at weddings being used every day/week.

I see sunpak systems are pretty popular, but are they wirelessly compatible?.. is there something else?.. and which one?

Also I want a bounce that can rotate sideways as well as up-down for ceiling bounce with on camera usage when using vertical framing... my old gun didn't do this and I frequently missed it.

I'd be happy without wireless at this stage, just so long as I can make it compatible without having to change the flash after 12 months to get wireless.

Focusing issue with the 35mmf 1.4L II

I got mine about a week ago. Optically it seems to be everything I was hoping for, BUT! autofocus is inconsistent. I have tried it on both 5DSR and 1DX, with the same result. Most of the time it is fine, with the manually verified AFMA setting I got. I had to do it manually, since FoCal was unable to set an AFMA value. It can front focus on one shot and back focus on the next. It can also be totally off, while the camera(s) still report focus lock.

To me it looks like the Sigma Art story all over again. I´ll deliver it to CPS tomorrow, so we´ll see what they find out.

Has anyone else experienced the same?

Tamron SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD

Today, I was pleasantly surprised.

A week ago a local realtor asked me to photograph a high end home for him. The widest lens I had is the Excellent Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM. The problem is that at 24mm I just could not get enough of any bathroom or closet. Everything in small areas looked strained and forced, not relaxed. I thought to myself, "I need something wider." That, and I need to learn how to do multiple exposure bracketing and combining images.

This was my first ever real estate shoot and I am no pro at anything by any means. However, there is a lot of pressure on me to do something to earn some money soon.

I had things narrowed down to three choices: 1. Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, 2. Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM, and 3. Tamron SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD.

The shop in Las Vegas had all three so I drove the 80 odd miles to do a first person comparison, albeit, a completely unscientific comparison. There are people that write great reviews of both Canon lenses, and also bad reviews. I’ve always bought my gear online to avoid the sales tax and the expense of driving to Las Vegas. For this particular purchase I felt I needed to put the lenses on my camera to make a more informed decision. This is the last gear purchase I can make for a long time. Things need to be right.

When I got to the shop I first looked at the Tamron. This lens is heavy and built like a tank. I like heavy lenses. Heavy lenses just feel good in the hand to me. While it is not so massive as Canon’s 11-24mm f/4L USM… it is close weighing less than 3oz less. The Tamron dwarfs Canon’s 14mm f/2.8L II USM and is bigger than the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM.

There are good reviews of all these lenses, but in the back of my mind the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM wasn’t going to make it into my bag. I never even held it.

That only left two choices: The 14mm Canon or the Tamron 15-30mm zoom. The price difference is massive. The Tamron chimes in nicely at $1,199.00. The Canon screams $1,999.00 Hmmmm…

Times are hard for me right now. I had a career ending set of injuries and have not worked since January. As such, this purchase has me a little nervous.

I’m a Canon fan boy. I really am. I clicked off a few photos with the Canon and then the Tamron in the shop with my 5D Mark III. Honestly, on the tiny screen on the back of the camera I can’t tell much of a difference, if any. The Canon is wider, but is that worth $800 more dollars?

I chose the Tamron. While the Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 II USM is a fine lens, I feel the Tamron has more to offer at a much more reasonable price. It is not as wide as the Canon. However, it is much more versatile (zoom and vibration control) and costs a whole lot less.

The obsessive side of me will have to get used to having a non-Canon lens as part of my gear, but I think I’ll get over it.

When I got home I shot a photo of my tiny bathroom and small living room. The Tamron will work out well.

At $1,199.00 it is very hard to beat. In fact, I don't think it can be.

Owning APS-C and Full Frame

Hi all

This post is aimed at those who own both crop and full frame bodies.

Certainly there's a definite reason why both were bought. The all round better IQ of full frame vs the better reach of crop.

But how exactly has your actual experience turned out with both formats in your bag? Are both used as you envisioned or has one become the go-to camera, whilst the other stays in the bag?

Alternatively, is your usage determined by the genre you are shooting?

Light L16 Camera

Anybody know much about this new camera from Light? I'm always curious about new technology and this is definitely different, 16 lenses, 10 cameras firing simultaneously... Given the size of the camera and lenses, the sensor(s) have to be tiny.

Review: Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II at DXOMark

HTML:
Let the fun begin, DXOMark has completed their review of the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II along with a bunch of numbers.</p>
<blockquote><p>With the introduction of high-resolution bodies such as the Canon EOS 5Ds and 5DsR, with their ability to highlight lens flaws, it comes as little surprise to see Canon roll out new versions of some of the older models in their line-up. The original 35mm f/1.4 wasn’t a bad performer, but it was beginning to show its age. The new model greatly surpasses the original in several key areas. It is generally sharper, but it’s the improvement in geometry and uniformity that really impresses. Not only does it have low field curvature and astigmatism, but Canon has also dramatically lowered lateral chromatic aberration, with the overall effect of greatly improving imaging performance in the outer field (where the older model was weak).</p></blockquote>
<p>According to the review, the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II doesn’t quite score as well as the Sigma 35 f/1.4 Art in sharpness. However it seems to perform well in all the other categories against the Sigma and Zeiss 35 f/1.4 Distagon.</p>
