Toshiba To Sell Sensor Business to Sony

HTML:
From Reuters:</p>
<p>Toshiba Corp is set to sell its image sensor business to Sony Corp for around 20 billion yen ($164.68 million) as part of a restructuring plan laid out earlier this year, sources with knowledge of the deal said on Saturday.</p>
<p>Toshiba, whose businesses range from laptops to nuclear power, is undergoing a restructuring after revelations this year that it overstated earnings by $1.3 billion going back to fiscal 2008/09.</p>
<p>Image sensors, which are used in digital cameras and smartphones, are part of Toshiba’s system LSI semiconductor business. Toshiba plans to sell its image sensor manufacturing plant in Oita, southern Japan, and pull out of the sensor business altogether, said the sources, who declined to be identified.</p>

Canon Actively Testing Third Party Sensors [CR2]

HTML:
<p>Usually around the time of a DSLR announcement, there’s talk about Canon using a third party sensor in the camera. We have always dismissed those rumors and sure enough, the announced camera comes with a Canon sensor.</p>
<p>We’re being told that Canon is actively testing a third party full frame sensor in a DSLR. Along with the third party sensor, they’re testing the same camera with Canon made sensor.</p>
<p>After <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-develops-aps-h-size-cmos-sensor-with-approximately-250-megapixels/">Canon’s recent development announcement of a 250mp sensor</a>, it’s obvious Canon is not getting out of the sensor business altogether, but I suppose it’s possible that some non flagship products could see a third party sensor. We don’t know the business advantages of using a third party sensor, but we’d imagine it would lower the cost of development.</p>

7D II vs SL1/100D?

Before I get lynched daring to compare these two bodies please consider this:

I learned DSLR photography on my reliable little SL1/100D, but I feel I somehow 'outgrew' this little gem...

What I like to photograph:
-(40%) Animals/Wildlife
-(25%) People/Street photography, available light, no flash
-(25%) Events/Music Concert photography, in dim-lit environments
-(10%) some still life landscape, architectural and sports

...some of my work is accessible via www.michaeljohannsen.com

-------------------------------------------------------

The 7D's auto focus and fps of the larger body are both incredible. Also handling noise at higher ISO levels is better too, though I rarely dare to go beyond 800.

Given its size & weight, the 7D II is very similar to the 5D III, but that is a full frame camera.

What this boils down to: How much of an upgrade is the 7D II from a SL1/100D?

Is the 7D II really worth it if I already have a fair APSC-body, or am I better served with a 5D III?

Sony to Acquire Toshiba’s Image Sensor Business

After:

Sony sensors are now their own business

now we learn that:

Sony to Acquire Toshiba’s Image Sensor Business for $165M, Report Says

How do you think that this will affect Canon and us as consumers? Should Canon give up and start buying sensors from the now almost-sensor-monopoly as it will be impossible to compete with them? Should Canon raise their bet and invest tons of $ in R&D to be the only real alternative/competition to Sony?

Light 16 - 16 cameras into one!

I found this article interesting - a camera that packs 16 different cameras in it, with "13-megapixel camera module, each grouped into three different focal lengths. There are five 35mm modules, five of the 70mm version, and six 150mm modules"

http://www.theverge.com/2015/10/7/9473793/light-l16-16-lens-camera-specs-price

That's true innovation for sure. How useful it it is remains to be seen, but I like when companies think outside of the box. What do you think

For Queen and country! Congrats to Lewis Hamilton!

What a weekend. The weather was beyond atrocious, but it was a small price to pay to witness history in the making. Gotta get some rest now, but I will post up the rest of the images from this weekend soon. What a privilege it was to capture the moment. Congrats to three-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, already one of the all-time greats.

Just honest question about forum structure

I just bought a new 600EX-RT Speedlight and hope I'm going to love it. I assume I will, but have not had it long enough to make any real assessment. I also bought the Yongnuo Speedlight transmitter (much less $$ than the Canon version and it has AF assist beam the Canon version does not.

Anyway, I'm just wondering why this forum lumps Speedlights with Printers and accessories?

What's Next From Sigma? [CR2]

HTML:
<p>The recent announcement for the 20mm f/1.4 Art from Sigma was somewhat of a surprise, considering there’s already a 24mm f/1.4 Art. Though the 20mm perspective should provide enough difference from the 24mm to be a popular addition to the Art series line of lenses.</p>
<p>We’re told Sigma will continue to be aggressive with new lens releases into 2016 and that the following lenses should be expected some time during the year. 2016 is a Photokina year, and Sigma usually announces a good number of products for the German, bi-annual trade show.</p>
<ul>
<li><em>Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art</em>

This is easily the most requested addition to the Art series of lenses. Most, including us, expected it to be the next Art prime from Sigma. We’re told to expect it in the second half of 2016 and that the lens is in prototype form.</li>
<li><em>Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 Art OS</em>

Sigma is actively working on a 24-70 f/2.8 Art OS lens. We’re told it’s a completely new optical formula for the focal range from Sigma. With Nikon releasing a VR version of their 24-70 f/2.8, we expect Sigma to get on the stabilized bandwagon.</li>
<li><em>Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 OS Sport</em>

We’re told this lens has been in active development for quite some time and that Sigma is working diligently on the autofocus performance such a lens would demand. This could be a Photokina 2016 lens.</li>
</ul>
<p>Sigma is actively working on about 12 lenses we’re told and we should also expect a new art series wide angle prime, as well as new supertelephoto lenses over the next 12-18 months.</p>
<p>The bad news? There is no active development of a follow-up to the Sigma 200-500 f/2.8.</p>

Creating custom camera profile

Hi,

I'm looking for color accuracy and have been reading up on how to create a custom camera profile for LR. However, there is loads of information on the web and because of severe time constraints I am reluctant to trawl through all of it website by website.

Can anyone please advise on the best resources that I can access for this purpose?

For what it is worth, I do have a Colorchecker Passport.

Thanks in advance.

T-Stop, F-Stop and Vignette

I've been evaluating my new copy of the Tamron 35mm f/1.8 VC and one of the points of differentiation from other lenses in it's class is the peripheral falloff performance. The Tamron promises very even illumination across the image frame.

I decided to compare it to a lens which I know to have very strong vignette, the Canon EF 40mm STM pancake lens. I put the lenses in manual focus set to minimum focus distance and shot images of a plain wall (completely out of focus) The wall was lit by window light from the upper right hand side. I know these are not precise scientific tests but I believe these shots are sufficient for some productive discussion.

I've attached a few comparisons to show the difference in illumination across the image frame. The 40STM appears to be brighter in the centre of frame but only slightly darker in the periphery given the same amount of (theoretically calculated) light while the Tamron produces a very flat illumination across the frame.

The Tamron appears to deliver a similarly bright frame with 0.3EV more light so perhaps has a transmission of about T2.0-2.1. According to DXO-Mark published data, (http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Canon/Canon-EF-40mm-F28-STM-mounted-on-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-II__483) the 40mm STM is T2.8 so does the 40STM overexpose the middle of frame in order to achieve a T-Stop that matches it's F-Stop.

Pentax FF camera -- real world sighting

Tally ho -- the new Pentax FF camera is in the flesh at Photoplus:

http://www.adorama.com/alc/8328/article/photo-plus-2015-first-glimpse-pentax-full-frame-dslr?sterm=2YcXP9Xd60QF3XN1rmTVU0erUkXW6QyENzzLTY0&kbid=63773

That LCD tilting mechanism looks insane -- that's clearly off-axis movement, implying it's not your garden variety tilty-swively linkage. So many knobs as well...

This is rumored to work with their 645 lenses off an adapter similar to EF glass on EOS-M. If true, it's a clever head start while they develop the new glass expressly for that mount.

Few questions to Zeiss 100 makro lens owners

Hi guys! I use Canon 70D with 100 2.8L macro lens in the dental clinic taking close-up photographs of my patient's teeth and gingiva. Everything works just fine, but I'm thinking about getting Zeiss 100 makro lens hoping to get more accurate colors, especially red color (which is important for clinicians). I use only manual focus, and usually I focus by moving the camera back and forth and not by rotating focus ring (to keep the same magnification all the time).

So, I have a few questions to people who own Zeiss 100 makro lens.
1. Would I have focus confirmation with the way I focus?
2. I know it's has 1:2 magnification. I did my research but unfortunately I still cannot clearly understand what that means (silly me!). Does it mean that it acts like a 50mm lens and I'd need to come closer to my patients to capture the same area?
3. What would be a good adapter to use with Canon MR-14EX II Macro Ring? I couldn't find an answer.
4. Is there any other macro lens you'd recommend to get natural colors? My preferred focal length is 100mm on crop bodies and 160-180mm on FF bodies.
Thank you for your time! :)

What do you think will FPS and MP of the new Canon 1Dx Mark II?

No prize just bragging rights.

Sometimes the collective wisdom of a group gets a better answer than a single individual (expert).
