Horse jumping shootout "Advice Required"

Hi Gents

I am assigned to shoot horse jumping event in Jan 2016. I own a 6D & i don’t have a zoom lens (sold long time ago for cash) and I’m confused what to get regarding the camera & the lens

For the Camera should i sell me 6D & get the 5D MK iii (cons: Waiting for replacement) or get a 7D MK ii as a second camera or keep 6D (cons: i don’t trust the autofocus for something like this)

For the lens i am looking for one of these 2 options:

1- EF 70-300 L (Pros: Compact spending for it, Cons: 5.6 maximum aperture not sure if it is good for this event or do i need larger “advice required”)
2- EF 70-200 2.8 ii L (sure it is the best, cons: Large, Expensive)
3- Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC (Pros: cheaper than the Canon, advice required regarding it is autofocus)

Your advice please :-[

5D Mk IV "Killer Apps"? Narrowing them down

I know there is a good thread, started by CR, about what we'd like to see in the 5D Mk IV, filled with many reasonable wishes.

I'd like to narrow it down and ask: What one, two, or three new features would compel you to buy a 5D Mk IV. (Or at least crank up the GAS to high.) I'm especially interested in what current 5DIII owners have to say, as I have a 5DIII myself.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Availability in 2016 [CR2]

HTML:
There’s not much being said about the EOS-1D X Mark II at the moment, the leaks at Canon are for the moment relatively well plugged (Though we’re trying to confirm a few things we’ve been told).</p>
<p>A very solid source let us know that the EOS-1D X Mark II will be in our hands no later than April 2016, but that Canon has yet to finalize an announcement date. So there’s no need to worry that this is going to be a Photokina 2016 product.</p>
<p>The million dollar question is how the EOS 5D Mark IV will play in all of this, could that be a Photokina product? Is it possible that Canon could wait another year to announce, what will surely be the most popular Canon photographic product since the EOS 5D Mark III was announced in 2012? There has been some insight on this, but very little can be confirmed at this time.</p>
<p>The only thing that is confirmed for the EOS-1D X Mark II is that it will shoot 4K video and that there will not be a direct follow-up to the EOS-1D C.</p>

<p><strong>Maestro II processor for maximum performance

</strong>The high-performance Maestro II series processor guarantees that photographers never miss even the fastest-moving subjects and that the camera responds instantaneously to all commands. Together with 2 GB of buffer memory, the processor makes it possible to capture consecutive exposures at rates of up to 11 frames per second at full 24 MP resolution and 4K video with a frame rate of 30 frames per second. Pictures can be saved simultaneously to an SD memory card as both a JPEG and DNG in line with the fast UHS II standard. Thanks to its Maestro II series processor, the Leica SL achieves the best performance currently possible in the professional camera class and underlines the innovative character of the camera.</p>
<p><strong>24 MP CMOS sensor for exceptional picture quality in 35 mm full-frame format

</strong>The 24 MP CMOS full-frame sensor guarantees impressive dynamic range, excellent contrast rendition, exceptional sharpness, the highest resolution, and noise-free images in almost all lighting conditions. The shutter provides speeds from 30 minutes to 1/8000 sec. The sensor reveals its full potential in combination with Leica SL lenses, especially in available-light situations, and captivates users with atmospheric exposures in superior quality at ISO settings up to a maximum of 50,000. What’s more, it is optimised for use with Leica M-Lenses and, in addition to supporting all their functions, delivers the excellent picture quality with which Leica has been synonymous for more than 100 years.</p>
<p><strong>The new movie star: professional video in cinematic resolution

</strong>The Leica SL is much more than a professional still-picture camera with video recording capability: it fulfils even the most stringent demands of moviemakers as a fully fledged video camera. Thanks to its 24 MP CMOS sensor and high-performance Maestro II series processor, the Leica SL enables the production of professional videos in 4K resolution. Videos can be recorded in UHD at 30 frames per second or even in Cine4K at 24 frames per second. In full HD, the Leica SL records video at up to 120 frames per second and makes use of the entire sensor area. Here, the logical and intuitive handling concept of the camera makes a clear distinction between still- and motion-picture recording. As soon as the camera is in video mode, the display shows only relevant information for video recording, such as safe area, aspect ratio, zebra function or the recording level of the microphone. An optional audio adapter allows you to connect an external microphone and the audio recording level can be set without accessing the menu. Videos can be output in 4:2:2 10-bit format in 4K resolution over HDMI 1.4.</p>
<p><strong>Aluminium body for robust performance in everyday photography

</strong>From the beginning, resilience and robustness were at the focus of the Leica SL’s development. Body components machined from solid aluminium and precisely engineered seals around controls and in the lenses provide optimum protection against dust, moisture and splashes for the sensitive technology inside. At the same time, integrated ultrasonic sensor cleaning removes dust and dirt from the sensor. The glass covering the back panel display is extremely scratch-resistant and features an anti-reflex coating. All these properties make the camera an ideal tool for use in the rough, everyday conditions faced by professional photographers. In the interplay between its equally classic and functional design and its distinctive lines, the Leica SL is another example of Leica’s fine art of engineering.</p>
<p><strong>A new generation of lenses for excellent picture quality

</strong>The combination of outstanding imaging performance and the fastest autofocus currently possible makes working with the Leica SL an entirely new experience and enables photographers to produce images in a quality never before seen in 35 mm format. True to Leica’s principles, the new lenses specific to the Leica SL are distinguished by superior optical and mechanical precision. With its wide range of focal lengths and high speed, the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–90 mm f/2.8–4 ASPH. is the ideal standard zoom lens in the Leica SL-System portfolio. The zoom range of the fast Leica APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280 mm f/2.8–4 follows on directly from this and the current lens portfolio is rounded off by the Leica Summilux-SL 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH., the new reference lens for this focal length.</p>
<p>What’s more, the exceptional compatibility of the Leica SL-System grants photographers access to almost all Leica lenses ever made. For instance, all lenses for the Leica T camera can be used without an adapter. In addition, appropriate adapters allow Leica S, M, and R system lenses and lenses from other manufacturers to be mounted on the Leica SL.</p>
<p><strong>Availability

</strong>The Leica SL (Type 601) body will be on sale from 16 November 2015. The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–90 mm f/2.8–4 ASPH. zoom lens will be available at the same time. Further Leica SL lenses will follow.</p>

Review: Eizo CG318-4K Monitor

HTML:
Monitors are a very important part of the photo processing workflow and you definitely get what you pay for. If you do any sort of printing at home or in the office, your monitor plays a big part in getting a successful outcome.</p>
<p>Joshua Holko has completed his review of the brand new and soon-to-be-released, EIZO CG318-4K, a 31.1″ 4K monitor.</p>
<blockquote><p>At an MSRP of $6000 USD the Eizo CG318-4K is clearly not for everyone. However, if you are a creative professional or a keen photographer (with the means) who wants and/or needs to work in a 4K wide gamut colour managed environment or requires the highest levels of colour accuracy and uniformity then you will be very well served by the Eizo CG-318-4K. With a 5 Year warranty that includes a zero bright pixels guarantee for a period of six months as well as a 10,000 hour guarantee for colour and brightness, the Eizo represents the current state of the art in graphic displays for creative professionals. The resolution, colour reproduction, accuracy and uniformity are simply superb. Highly recommended if you have the means. <a href="http://blog.jholko.com/2015/10/19/eizo-cg318-4k-review-the-cutting-edge-of-high-end-graphic-displays/" target="_blank">Read the full review</a>…</p></blockquote>
<p>If you want arguably the best 4K display for photography, you won’t have to look much further than this new monitor. For now, I’ll stick with my 5K iMac, but I really wish I needed one of these. The new EIZO CG318-4K should begin shipping at the end of October.</p>

U.S. Announces Task Force to Develop Drone Registry

HTML:
<p>From Reuters:</p>
<p>Mon Oct 19, 2015 2:32pm EDT – The Obama administration, faced with rising safety and security risks from a surge in unauthorized drone flights, announced a new task force on Monday to develop a new federal register for the owners of unmanned aerial systems.</p>
<p>The task force of both private sector and government officials is charged with recommending by Nov 20 a process for drone registration that federal authorities hope to have in place before the Christmas holiday, when more than 1 million drones are expected to be purchased by consumers.</p>
<p>“We’re going to require operators of drones to register their aircraft,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said at a news conference.</p>
<p>The registry would apply not only to new drone sales, but also to drones already in use, officials said.</p>

Patent: A Different Take on the EVF

HTML:
<p>An odd patent for an EVF. It looks like if you move the eyepiece to the LCD screen, it’ll change display area to just show there. Once the eyepiece is off the screen, it’ll go back to a full screen LCD. While I don’t imagine the screen is as high resolution as most EVFs, this could have some kind of a low cost solution.</p>
<p>As pointed out on the forum, it looks like this would be an accessory that would attached to a flash shoe.</p>

Camera Prices for Christmas

The linked article made me wonder just what sales and prices we will see this holiday season. There have historically been some fantastic 1 day deals starting in October and going thru December as dealers panic and dump inventory. The Final quarter of the Canon Fiscal Year ends December 31, and they always try to blow out as much inventory as possible. They are likely shipping sales inventory to Dealers already, in preparation.

If you have a Camera or lens in Mind, set your price and stick to it. When it pops up, you may only have minutes or hours to jump on a deal.

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/some-pre-holiday-shopping-advice-101815.html

"Retailers are a bit nervous in the weeks leading up to the start of the 2015 holiday shopping season. It remains to be seen how consumers will react.

Will they spend the money they've saved this year on gasoline? Or, will they use that money to pay existing bills and add to savings?

The evidence so far suggests shoppers will be careful with money and look for bargains. Heading into the holiday season, sales have been lackluster and even the National Retail Federation predicts only a modest increase in sales over last year."

Demo of Canon 250MP Sensor and Turbulence Removal Feature

HTML:
<p>The Canon EXPO 2015 was in Paris last week and Canon added a few things to the show. The video below was shown on a loop at the demo of the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-develops-aps-h-size-cmos-sensor-with-approximately-250-megapixels/">250mp sensor Canon originally showed at Canon EXPO 2015 in New York City</a> in September.</p>
<p>This video showcases what Canon calls “Turbulence Removal” which helps reduce environmental fluctuations that can show up in telephoto images.</p>
<p>We’ve been told that the 250mp sensor is still years away, so you’ll have to make due with the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/deal-eos-5ds-2649-reg-3699-eos-5dsr-3049-reg-3899/">EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R</a> if you want more resolution.</p>

Another Comparison between the Canon EF 50mm f 1.4 USM vs f1.8 STM

A friend of us is living an London and she is blogging on fashion and lifestyle.http://www.vorld.tv/ She has pretty nice photos - all shot with an EOS 60D and the EF 50 STM II.

I realized which asset these cheap but excellent lenses are for the Canon EOS system. But i use µ43 as well - especially when I am traveling in my regular business - and I do not want to carry tons of gear. And there is nothing comparable. I started to look closer at this topic, bought the cheapest reasonable good lens (SIGMA 30mm f2.8 Art) and reviewed my experience: I had to get my copy of the Nifty-Fifty....

This copy has just blown me away: It is clear better at all aperture than my 50mm f1.4 lens. At any area and any aperture. Period.

Here is the link to the review: http://bit.ly/1OCuFi5

Some remarks on comparison of the image quality in comparison:: In the following images the f1.4 is left, the f1.8 is on the right...

This photo are shot @ f2 and 100 ISO. It is the upper left side - and the result is terrible - but only for the f1.4 version. the f1.8 looks pretty acceptable.

The difference is reduced @ f4 - but still not acceptable on f1.4 lens.

The next test was @ f11. I thought that the f 1.4 will be comparable - but this is definitely not the case.... The f1.4 is softer - even stopped down.

Showing stars... These crops represent the center of the images. Both shots @ f8. The f 1.4 has less stars in comparison to the f1.8 - even if the number of blades are less....

These crops represent the left side of the images and not the extreme. Both shots @ f8 - and the f 1.4 is again pretty disappointing for me.

Thinking aloud about updating my body

At this point this is just mere speculating which direction I might need to go. I'll get better idea if/when 1DX2 specs are really published. But to make conversation, let's assume 1DX2 is decent upgrade in terms of High ISO noise and DR, and costs ~$7k.

My current bodies:
1DX: Used 98% of the time. 1/3 for indoor (no flash) sports, 1/3 for studio, 1/3 for club shooting
5D3: Used rarely. Sometimes I carry it as backup, sometimes not. Used mainly as second body when I want/need to carry two, or shooting video (with ML).

I've tried to consider my options to improve:

1: Sell 5D3 and buy Sony A7R-II (with Metabones4). Use Sony for studio and video, and maybe club. 1DX for sports.
Cost of upgrade: ~$1500.
Pros:Would improve studio setup by plenty.
Cons: No improvement for sports

2: Sell 5D3 and buy 5DS(/R?), use for studio and video, maybe club.
Cost of upgrade: ~$1000.
Pros:Would improve studio setup by plenty.
Cons: No improvement for sports

3: When 1DX2 available, sell 1DX and buy 1DX2. Use for all but video.
Cost of upgrade: ~$4000.
Pros:Would improve sports some amount
Cons: Expensive upgrade.

4: Sell 1DX and buy Sony A7R-II. Use for all, keep 5D3 second body as now.
Cost of upgrade: ~$0.
Pros:Would improve studio setup by plenty.
Cons: Big hit on sports for AF and fps.

5. Forget upgrade and drink the money
Cost of upgrade: unlimited
Pros:Would care much less about cameras
Cons: Massive hangover

Any comments? Any obvious pro/con I forgot on those? Any alternative option I should consider instead of those above?

And yes, this is all speculations, so don't get hung up on the fact that 1DX2 is not released yet.

photo blinds for birds

hope this is the proper place for this post.

can we start a thread. on photo blinds. if you know of a public photo blind or a place that photographers could get access to, to take bird shots. or any wildlife. please list the state park, area, etc or the contact person to get access to the blind. curious what others might think is common could give others something new to discover. just a thought.

1Dx M2 Sensor Resolution - Back of envelop estimate

The current 5DS / 5DSR can shoot 5 FPS at 50MP. That is 250 MP / second.

At 12 FPS, that is equivalent to 20MP second. Assuming that Canon squeeze another 20-33% in sensory transfer speed, that would make the max possible resolution of the 1Dx M2 resolution at 24-27 MP. If Canon opts for higher FPS the max resolution might be around 25MP.

Of course if Canon could increase the transfer rate even higher, then they could provider higher FPS or higher resolution.

Guess a thought.

400 2.8 II Backfocusing

I finally got the 400 2.8 II but I'm having an issue with the lens backfocusing.

I'm noticing it with football where I'll have the focus point on the ball carrier but in the final image, the focus will be on defenders 2-3 feet behind the ball carrier.

Is this an issue with the lens, or could it just be my technique that needs to improve as I get used to using this lens?

135mm f/1.4 full-frame lens coming from third party

Mitakon typically makes tricked out lead-pipe-like f/0.95 lenses for mirrorless rigs, but check this out:

http://photorumors.com/2015/10/17/mitakon-135mm-f1-4-lens-to-be-announced-soon/

They say it will be for "Sony FE, Canon (pictures above) and most likely Nikon mounts"

The picture is clearly a solid-topped (no pop-up flash) + non-integrally gripped body, which means 5D(something) or 6D --> that's a full-frame lens.
