Big Print from Europe Trip

I work at a photo lab so it is easy for me to get things printed and framed. This is a framed 40x60 inch print they just did for me. It was taken February of this year on a trip to Switzerland, France, England. This is dawn at Mont Saint Michele, France.

Canon 5D3 and 70-200 2_8 L (non IS), Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod. I mean the original shot. This self portrait is same camera and tripod but 24-70 4 L lens.

I would love to see other people's travel photos that you have printed and displayed. Please post shots of them (as they hang in your home or office).

5dmkiii new focusing screen question -> now a 'did i mess up my camera' thread

I recently installed a new focusing screen from focusingscreen.com and i noticed something that i wanted to double check with you guys about.

I bought the EC-A, which is this model:
EC-A01a.jpg

And it works great with my 35mm but what I've noticed is that on my 100-400 mkii if i go greater than 100mm it starts to not be accurate, the further i go away from 100 the less the diamond can be clean. Optically it doesnt make sense to me since the focus point will still meet at the focusing screen. Could someone maybe explain this to me? Did I installed it incorrectly (im 99% certain i did it correctly).

LensTip Review: Tamron 35 mm f/1.8 Di VC USD

And now the Tamron 35mm prime:
http://www.lenstip.com/455.4-Lens_review-Tamron_SP_35_mm_f_1.8_Di_VC_USD_Image_resolution.html

(again, on a 24 MP Nikon D3X)

Before I read this, I contended we as Canon folks didn't need this lens so badly. Whereas the 50-ish mm lens category is missing a smaller / sharper-but-not-Otus/Art-sharp winner with IS, we already have that at the 35mm length with the Canon 35mm F/2 IS USM.

And these results do not change my mind terribly much. The Tamron is a hair faster and it is sharper in the corners wide open than the Canon, but I don't think it trumps the Canon to the point that I'd give up the first party AF speed/reliability/consistency of the Canon for it.

But there is more to a lens than resolution and AF. I'm curious see everyone's take on this: is this an alternative to the Canon?

Looking forward: System agnostic?

One of my former passions in life, was video games and more specifically, Sega video games.

Sega had an amazing library of games but their consoles after the Master System (Genesis/Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast) all had inferior specs to what the competition was putting out. In particular, their processors felt a generation or so behind what either Nintendo or Sony released.

Sega's position at a time was very similar to Canon's current position. Market leaders, market innovators with a core client base that was heavily invested emotionally and financially.
When Sony in particular released the PlayStation, their initial market was the casual gamer. The release of Final Fantasy 7 effectively killed the Sega console era as hardcore gamers, formerly dedicated Sega or Nintendo users, then bought Sony.

Then it happened. Sega decided to withdraw from the console market and become "system agnostic", developing their games across any and all platforms.

Today I'm a Canon man and I'm experiencing a sense of deja vu.

Casual users are investing more and more in other brands and dedicated Canonistas are no longer just considering other systems but are actually buying them. 3rd party manufacturers are clearly recognising the need to use Canon lenses on other systems, hence the emergence of Metabones adaptors and so on.

I'm beginning to wonder if history will repeat itself and I'll watch Canon driven to essentially become a lens and peripheral manufacturer for other brands.

Just a thought I'm putting on the forum, some commentary that's currently running through my mind

Sigma Launches 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

HTML:
Truly wide and truly fast, the Canon EF mount 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens is a member of the venerable Art series of Global Vision lenses from Sigma and pairs a sophisticated optical design with a robust physical construction. Comprised of 15 elements in 11 groups, the lens design includes both “F” Low Dispersion (FLD) and Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, as well as limit distortion for clean, sharp, and evenly illuminated imagery. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to minimize surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy. The wide focal length and consistent image quality make this lens especially suitable for landscape, interior, architectural, and astrophotography applications, while the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture deems it ideal for natural and low-light shooting.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>Complementing the optical performance is an equally adept Hyper Sonic Motor, which provides fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance. This focusing motor also enables full-time manual focus override at any time just by rotating the focus ring for refined manual control and focusing as close as 10.9″. The lens barrel is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite material, which supports working in a wide variety of temperatures and conditions, and the lens mount is constructed from brass for long-term durability and mounting accuracy. Additionally, this lens is also compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuned control over focusing parameters and other lens characteristics.</p>
<ul>
<li>As part of the Art line within Sigma’s Global Vision series, this lens’ is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.</li>
<li>Prime wide-angle 20mm f/1.4 lens is designed for full-frame format Canon EF mount DSLRs, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 32mm equivalent focal length.</li>
<li>Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.</li>
<li>Both FLD glass and five SLD elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting.</li>
<li>A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.</li>
<li>The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.</li>
<li>A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.</li>
<li>Petal-shaped lens hood helps to reduce lens flare when working in strong lighting conditions and also offers some protection to the front element of the lens.</li>
<li>The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.</li>
<li>The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.</li>
<li>This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.</li>

Least expensive Powershots

Will Canon abandon the sub 300 dollar market or will they continue to improve the least expensive cameras? I could see a smaller market for improved lower end devices. Maybe continuing the 1/1.7 sensor in camera variations like the G16 and others. To me it makes sense but then again I know the market would be much smaller The camera market is reverting back to making cameras just for the same people who have bought cameras in the 60s, 70s, 80's and 90s rather than the feeding frenzy in the middle digital era from about 2004 to 2014.

Zeiss Batis FE 85mm and 25mm

I received emails from CR members asked to share some photos from Batis lenses. My 2cents. I would highly recommend the Batis lenses to all a7 shooters - worth every penny. Look forward to see their 135mm or even 200mm f2.

These were shot with A7s + 85mm @ f1.8

Just bought a 6D! -shutter count shows new or used?

I just bought my first FF: a 6D, upgrading from a 50D. :)
This will hopefully be the boost in IQ I've been longing for.
I got a great deal because the store had it as a customer return, but it looked brand new and unused in the box with all the packaging intact. Even the charger was taped in a plastic bag.

So I bought the Shuttercount utility (Mac) to check if/how much it had been used and it showed 256 actuations. The battery menu said 0. Prior to connecting it to my Mac via USB I had inserted a memory card and formatted it in the camera (I read about someone else getting confused because he/she had moved over a memory card from another camera so the shutter count somehow continued where it last left off for some reason).

So is it likely I received a brand new, unused camera (the 256 shots tested at the Canon factory) or should a new, out of the box camera show 0 actuations?

B&H Photo responds to CR Forums member re: warehouse working conditions story

Kudos to B&H for writing me back in response to my letter to them about the AJA story on the treatment of their warehouse workers.

FYI if you were curious. Didn't want to start a thread on this so much as close the loop on their side of things.

Why the obsession with mirrorless, rather than features?

I have a question that's been bugging me for a while - why is there such an obsession with the mirror in a DSLR?

One thing I see is that lots of people seem to conflate the mirror with the features/technology of the camera. I don't know of anything outside of an EVF that couldn't be done whether a camera has a mirror or not. Using live view, you could get focus peaking and any other features you'd get in a mirrorless camera, and with ML, you do get some of this already. And yet, whenever Sony, Fuji, etc. release a new camera, there is always the question of when Canon is going to release a pro-level mirrorless camera, rather than incorporate the new features, which I see as the more important question.

Am I missing something?

Buying a 1DX

Hey guys, so I've been doing landscape/adventure photography for almost two years now and I've been using two 5D Mark iii's but after recently moving to Norway and doing more cold weather/heavy rain and snow situations with my camera's I've been thinking of buying a 1DX mainly for the extra weather sealing over the 5D but also for the better high ISO and burst rate.

My question is mainly to those to use a 1DX for landscape/use it in bad weather if it's worth getting one mainly for that, I've been reading up a lot of posts from people who claim the 1DX has such good weather sealing that they used it in a full on tropical storm/blizzard so if any of you have any experience with the weather sealing let me know!

also if theres any other options you'd recommend feel free to add it! and I should also add that I'm not really too bothered about losing the extra 4MP going from the 5D to 1DX, as most of my work won't be printed out large or cropped.

42MP Sony sensor released in another camera... **and it's not a Nikon**

Between this and the Sigma 20mm Art rumor, today is full of surprises:

http://photorumors.com/2015/10/14/sony-rx1r-ii-camera-with-42mp-full-frame-sensor-announced/

Looks like the original RX1/RX1R + the RX100 v4 pop-up EVF + that 42MP Sony hotness.

Fixed lens, of course, so this is a prestige-level toy for half the price of a Leica, but hey. When you are the only player in FF mirrorless (under $4k), you get to screw around with things like this.
