HTML:
The upcoming Canon EOS M10 mirrorless camera has appeared on the Canon USA estore, along with the brand new Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens. The EOS M10 will come in black, white and gray.</p>
<p><strong>About the Canon EOS M10:</strong></p>
<p>Step up to EOS camera quality in a simple and easy-to-use package! The EOS M10 camera combines a lightweight, compact design with the power and image quality EOS cameras are known for along with the versatility of interchangeable lenses. Inside is an 18.0 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor that’s paired with the DIGIC 6 Image Processor to help capture colorful, detailed videos and photos, even in low-light situations. To help expand creative opportunities, the EOS M10 is compatible with a wide range of compact EF-M lenses specially designed for EOS M series digital cameras, and the extensive range of EF* and EF-S* lenses used with Canon’s DSLR cameras. It also has easy-to-use and automatic settings like the innovative Creative Assist to simplify photo adjustments and help ensure your images are how you want them. Self Portrait mode extends that assistance to help you grab great selfies by adjusting settings that smooth skin tones and artistically blur backgrounds. If it’s too dark for a normal photo, a built-in pop-up flash lights up dark spaces. All these powerful features combine to make the EOS M10 worthy of your attention, while being conveniently wrapped in a slim, stylish camera.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Legendary Image Quality in the Palm of Your Hand</strong>

The EOS M10 camera features a lightweight, comfortably designed body that’s easy to hold and take with you. From overseas vacations to backyard family gatherings, the EOS M10’s compact size means it can easily be on hand, without getting in the way. A built-in thumb grip also lets you grasp the body securely, while the rounded edges make holding the camera easier when recording long video clips. All this while still featuring the image quality for which Canon EOS cameras are so well known.</li>
<li><strong>Superb Detail With Minimal Noise</strong>

The 18.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor captures lots of detail with very little image noise. The sensor itself is APS-C type, which is the same size as the sensor found in Canon’s EOS Rebel series of cameras. The high resolution means you can crop the image to focus on one section, or have enough detail to print large photos to display or give to your family and friends. An ISO range of 100–12800 (expandable to 25600) lets you capture images on bright sunny beaches and darkened streets.</li>
<li><strong>Fast Focus</strong>

Life happens fast, and there’s little worse than missing out on capturing that perfect moment because the camera was too slow to focus. The EOS M10 camera uses Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF II autofocus system, which measures up to 49 different points in an image quickly and accurately to help get it in focus. In addition, face detection and object tracking help keep the subject of your photo focused, even if they move. What’s more, the EOS M10 is compatible with all EF-M lenses, which feature an AF+MF mode that lets you easily combine the speed of autofocus with the creative flourish possible with manual focus.</li>
<li><strong>Get the Shot You Want, at Any Angle</strong>

It’s vital to see if you’ve composed the photo you want. The EOS M10 camera’s 3.0-inch touch screen has 1.04 million pixels, letting you preview images in high detail. It can pivot a full 180°, meaning you can capture a unique dog’s-eye-view of the world or flip the screen up to get that epic selfie.</li>
<li><strong>Superb Moviemaking Made Easy</strong>

The EOS M10 camera can capture 1920×1080 Full HD video at frame rates of both 24p and 30p, and can record in MP4 format for easy sharing online.</li>
<li><strong>Moviemaking Made Easy with Manual Movie Control</strong>

The EOS M10 camera is a fine moviemaking tool. With touch-activated AF and a number of manual controls available, it’s easy to make intuitive setting adjustments silently and on the fly using the EOS M10’s dials and touch operations.</li>

Marching band

Posting some pics here from the high school marching band my daughters play in. Post your own, would love to see them. Want to know how you deal with difficult lighting conditions? Constructive criticism is gladly received. All pics were with a 6D and 24-105L.

Gripes.

What is you reoccurring, favorite gripe on this forum? This is more for fun, not to get into a particular debate or put anyone down.
It would be nice to know what you feel.

The gripe that comes to my mind at this point is "More DR is for people who do not expose properly."

Anything comes to your mind? :)

A few pics from the 400mm DO II

These are pretty crappy but that is not because of the lens, it's me. These are after a pretty brutal 4-5 hour scramble through the ridges and canyons of the Santa Cruz mountains, we were chasing a mountain lion. I think the first pic is maybe the best of the lion but I'm not focussed on the lion. Autofocus was hunting even with single point but that's almost certainly because I have shaky hands (benign tremor) and they are way worse when I'm tired (and I was exhausted, completely so).

All that said, ignore the lion, look at the branches in front of it. I believe this is sharper than the mark I. I need to find time to do a careful comparison, this is not that, but I promised something so here is something.

http://www.mcvoy.com/lm/2015-lion/

I'm pretty much a n00b so if you all have some specific things you'd like me to do let me know.

So far my only negative reaction to the lens is that the foot is different from the mark I, the mark I foot is easier to use as a handle when you are walking around. Pretty minor point.

DXO lens marks - have a laugh

I was taking a brief glance at DXO looking at how lenses change between bodies with a view on the expected DXO marks for the 5Ds/r

I noticed something I thought sums up the DXO data in one very simple stat

http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Canon/Canon-EF-300mm-F28L-IS-II-USM-mounted-on-Canon-EOS-6D__836

yes you are reading that right.. they are rating the 300mmF2.8LII as having a sharpness of 21MPix.

on a 20.2Mpix camera.

There you go, Proof this lens is exceptional.. it actually increases the number of pixels in your camera!

RAW Video 5D3 - Total Lunar Eclipse Spetember 27 2015

Here is a video I made using Magic Lantern firmware in cropped mode.

Equipment used:
Canon 5D M3
Canon 100-400 II
Canon 1.4x Extender
Some takes with additional kenko 2x extender.

Tripod:
Old equatorial mount powered with a tiny 9v battery (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546195-REG/Celestron_93514_Astromaster_Motor_Drive.html). I was amazed that this motor could carry my camera and lens following the moon.

11-24mm f/4L review at LensTip

It does an impressive job in many areas considering the very wide angle / short focal length
It can also provide very impressive flare and ghosts if you put a light source in the corner.

While I'd love to have the extra 3mm wider focal length on full frame, I'm content with the performance of my Nikon 14-24mm for how I use it and the fact it fits my D800 without an adapter.

Still, for the FF Canon shooter who wants or needs this UWA zoom's abilities, and can justify the cost, this is a pretty good chunk of glass.
It may be especially useful for UWA night sky shots with the low coma.

Voigtlander to Start Making Digital Cameras?

HTML:
A rumor has surfaced that says Voigtlander Cosina may have plans to enter the digital camera market. There are no details on what type of cameras or systems Voigtlander could make.</p>
<p>A lot of people would potentially be interested in a Leica M type of digital Bessa rangefinder, especially if the cost significantly undercuts the pricing of the M system.</p>
<p>There have been Voigtlander digital cameras in the past, but they were OEM rebranded entry level cameras. They also worked with Epson on the RD-1 digital rangefinder back in 2007.</p>

Kenko Tokina Acquires UK Filter Maker Formatt-Hitech

HTML:
<p><em>Filter giant Kenko Tokina has snapped up Wales-based filter maker Formatt-Hitech in a move designed to expand Hitech’s production of Firecrest ND filters for cinema.</em></p>
<blockquote><p>Formatt-Hitech, which is based in Aberdare, said it will continue to produce filters in the UK as an independent subsidiary of Kenko Tokina.</p>
<p>In a statement, Formatt-Hitech explained that its Firecrest filters have been on ‘backorder’ with most dealers throughout 2015.</p>
<p>‘The acquisition provides Formatt-Hitech with the financial stability to produce Firecrest in the volumes demanded by the market…</p>
<p>‘Kenko Tokina’s acquisition immediately rectifies the situation and it is expected that the backlog of Firecrest filters will be produced before the holiday season.’</p></blockquote>

Backpack for Hiking

Hi

Can anyboby recommended a good two compartment rucksack for Hiking to photographic locations ?.

It's needed as a replacement for my Lowepro Orion Trekker, that has separate sections for my camera gear and waterproof/lunch. The Manfrotto Active backack 1 and 2, both look suitable.

http://www.manfrotto.co.uk/advanced-active-backpack-i

http://www.manfrotto.co.uk/advanced-active-backpack-ii

Both version have the same size camera compartment, I plan to carry a Canon 5D Mk III body with 24-105 f4 L lens attached, as well as a telezoom (Canon 70-300 L) and wide angle lens (Canon 16-35mm f4 L). Can anybody confirm thay my kit will fit in the bottom section of these, or recommend a suitable alternative ?.

Interesting link. Many serious pros are now using Sony FF cameras.

http://petapixel.com/2015/10/07/the-white-house-is-shooting-with-a-sony-a7r-ii-now/

I found this interesting.

I wonder when and if, Canon think they will have to reply to the ever increasing number of genuine full time high profile pros now shooting with systems other than DSLR's? The position I have always taken, and still do, is that I use lenses that only Canon make (and I am sure Sony never will) so personally the conversation is moot, but the majority of general shooting can be done with the modest selection of lenses now available for the Sony and this is obviously compelling enough for some people to change.

I actually shot with an A7R II the other day for a few hours, not long enough for sure, but I was totally unimpressed with the viewfinder/EVF, the lag and blackout was shockingly bad to me, it seems phone screens have better refresh rates etc than the >$3,000 Sony combo, and the menus were painful. But the IQ was excellent and for generalist use where I am not looking for ultimate narrow dof control f4 zooms work with the iso capabilities it has.

Certainly I am nowhere near convinced with this iteration, but many pros are, what are your thoughts?

And no, this is not a troll post, everybody that knows me here knows that. I just read the linked article and having used one myself on Monday I was interested in others thoughts.

HTML:
<em>Light Introduces the First Multi-Aperture Computational Camera</em></p>
<p><strong>Core News Facts:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Today, Light (www.light.co) launched the L16, a camera that combines advanced optics with powerful software, making beautiful photos more accessible than ever before.</li>
<li>The L16 is the first multi-aperture computational camera that packs DSLR quality and capability into a device that fits in your pocket. The L16 is smaller, lighter, less expensive, and provides better image quality than any camera in its price class.</li>
<li>Light’s innovative technology flattens and re-directs the optical components in the camera, allowing for a sleek and streamlined design.</li>
<li>The L16 works by firing multiple cameras at multiple focal lengths simultaneously, then computationally fuses the images together to create a single high-quality image up to 52 megapixels.</li>
<li>By shooting an image at multiple focal lengths, the L16 captures more data in every shot, allowing you to enjoy the moment, and make adjustments, like depth-of-field, later.</li>
<li>With the L16, anyone can shoot, edit and share high-quality photos from a single device.</li>
<li>Additionally, the L16 is a fraction of the weight and size of comparable DSLR cameras, making it radically portable and travel-friendly, while being as easy to use as a smartphone camera.</li>
<li>Compared to professional-grade cameras that often require multiple lenses and add-ons, the L16 requires no additional equipment.</li>

Clouds so very perfectly and densely layered
Truly a painted sky
I was mesmerized
Just had to get the shot
Whipped out my camera
No thought of double checking the settings
COLOSSAL mistake
No idea till I got home and downloaded my card

Images and specs of the Canon "G5 X", "G9 X" (via DCI)

[quote author="digicame-info"]
From the direction of the reader, and the front and the top surface of the image of the high-end compact "G5 X" Canon "G9 X", I was asked to provide information about the specs.
Canon announce soon G5 X and G9 X. Currently, it has been found specs are as follows.
G5 X specs
- Sensor: 1 inches 20.2 MP back-illuminated
- Lens: 8.8-36.8mm F1.8-2.8 (equivalent 24-100mm F1.8-2.8 )
- Size: 112mm x 76mm x 44mm
- Weight: 337g
- LCD Monitor: 3 inches. 1.04 million dot
G9 X specs
- Sensor: 1 inches 20.2 MP back-illuminated
- Lens: 10.2-30.6mm F2.0-4.9 (equivalent 28-85mm F2.0-4.9)
- Size: 98mm x 58mm x 31mm
- Weight: 209g
- LCD Monitor: 3 inches. 1.04 million dot

Soon it seems high-end compact of two models appeared from Canon. G5 X is a single-lens reflex style, I seem to be equipped with the EVF. Lens appears to have been adopted are the same as the G7 X.

G9 X is a compact model that suppresses the magnification of the zoom, the body seems to be slightly smaller than the G7 X. It is to be noted that the G9 X, seems to be the black body in addition to the photo of the silver are available.

Review: Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II Via TDP

HTML:
Bryan at The-Digital-Picture has completed his review of Canon’s brand new EF 35mm f/1.4L II lens. This lens is the first to feature Canon’s latest lens technology, the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-develops-new-camera-lens-optical-element/" target="_blank">Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR)</a> element.</p>
<p>From the review:</p>
<blockquote><p>I love it when my expectations are exceeded and when Canon formally announced this lens, the theoretical MTF chart did just that. My expectations, set in part by the 24 L II vs 24 L I differences, were for a modest bump in performance. But, in this case, my next step was to check the bank account for available funds. With the bank account gasping for breath (thanks to the 5Ds R bodies recently arriving), Tony’s suggestion in the comments of the announcement post appeared to be a really good one: hold a bake sale! With the lens in hand and meeting my elevated expectations, I have a more serious decision to make as the really impressive wide open image quality this lens is delivering is refuelling my love with 35mm f/1.4. <a href="http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-35mm-f-1.4-L-II-USM-Lens.aspx" target="_blank">Read the full review…</a></p></blockquote>
