Image Gallery - Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 VC

Hello, everyone, I'm pretty deeply embedded in my reviews of the new Tamron primes. Really, really gorgeously made lenses (only an Otus and the 100-400L II) are made as nicely amongst all the lenses I've reviewed this year (25+).

I've got a gallery going of images from the 45mm f/1.8. Mostly just straight out of the camera stuff. I'll be adding photos of the lens itself along with full size samples shortly.

The gallery can be found here: http://bit.ly/1Kx9cTy

I'm attaching a few wide open close samples here (BTW, the lens can focus down to 11" and has a maximum magnification of .29x - the 50mm average is .15x). The little vine leaves in the second photo are tiny.

Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II Lab Test

HTML:
<p>The folks at Cinema5D have completed their first lab test of the Canon EOS C300 Mark II. One of the big upgrades was the 15 stops of dynamic range that Canon has claimed the new EOS C300 Mark II has. Cinema5D tested this in their lab and found that the new camera has about 2 stops less of dynamic range than they were expecting. The dynamic range appears to equal that of Sony’s FS7, but is well short of the ARRI ALEXA. Cinema5D did prefer the overall image quality of the EOS 300 Mark II after comparing it to the Sony FS7.</p>
<p><strong>From Cinema5D:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Even though the Canon C300 Mark II seems to be quite on par with the Sony Fs7 in terms of dynamic range, I must also say the image of the C300 Mark II is more neutral and the noise is less saturated and mushy in comparison to the Sony FS7. So while unfortunately there is a lot of noise in the shadows, at least it doesn’t look so bad. Also the C300 Mark II seems to be about 1 stop more light sensitive than the FS7 at high ISO speeds. <a href="https://www.cinema5d.com/canon-c300-mark-ii-review-dynamic-range/" target="_blank">Read the full lab test</a></p></blockquote>

New EOS M Body Coming in October? [CR1]

HTML:
<p>We’re told that Canon will announce a new EOS M body in October. This new mirrorless body will actually be under the current EOS M3, a more entry level product. This new body will likely be about $200 less than the current camera.</p>
<p>No specs were given for the new EOS M model, and there was no comment as to whether or not there would be a high end EOS M body to come as well.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Shootout: Canon 35mm f/1.4L II, Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art & Canon 35mm f/1.4L

HTML:
LensRentals.com has completed their first MTF comparison between the Canon 35mm f/1.4L II, Sigma 35mm Art & Canon 35mm f/1.4L. The MTF does show a slight advatange for the new Canon over the Sigma Art series lens, but based on the MTF alone, that may not make it worth the price. However, there are a lot more things to consider than just MTF charts. There’s build quality & AF performance, both of which are going to be better from the new Canon. Other things like color rendition, CA control, and overall “look” of the images the lens is capable of producing will also matter to a lot of buyers.</p>
<p>We’re still waiting for our copy of the new Canon, and we’re really looking forward to it.</p>
<div id="attachment_22616" style="width: 610px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/09/35mm-f1-4-shootout-canon-35mm-f1-4l-ii-vs-sigma-35mm-art-vs-canon-35mm-f1-4l-i"><img class="wp-image-22616 size-full" src="http://www.canonrumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/allmtf.jpg" alt="allmtf" width="600" height="810" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Roger Cicala and Aaron Closz, Olaf Optical Testing, 2015</p></div>
<p>From LensRentals.com</p>
<blockquote><p>Everyone always asks me if I would buy this lens. Honestly, I’m not sure that I would just on the basis of the MTF charts. It’s the best 35mm by just a whisker over the Sigma 35mm f/1.4, but at nearly twice the price. As more reviewers weigh in there may well show other things that make it worth the price difference. A lot of people only consider Canon lenses, though, and I expect many of them will be upgrading from the Canon 35mm f/1.4 for the increased resolution the new lens gives them. <a href="http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/09/35mm-f1-4-shootout-canon-35mm-f1-4l-ii-vs-sigma-35mm-art-vs-canon-35mm-f1-4l-i" target="_blank">Read the full article</a></p></blockquote>

A little bit of Canon history...

Does this make you smile nowadays? Does it make you feel any better realizing how good the gear actually is today?

"Based on the top-of-the-line EOS-1N, the EOS DCS 3 digital camera was developed with a high density area CCD containing 1.3 megapixels. The large, 16 MB buffer memory enables high-speed continuous shooting at 2.7 fps in 12-frame bursts. Also, by using the camera's 260 MB hard disk card, about 189 large size frames can be filed.

The equivalent film speed sensitivity range is ISO 200 to 1600. This expands to ISO 400 to 6400 with black-and-white and infrared versions. The camera is therefore well prepared for low-light conditions."

Magic Lantern on the 6D

Hi guys! I've long heard about the wonders of magic lantern but have never gathered up the courage to risk bricking my camera until now. I'm trying to do more video and the lack of focus peaking has definitely made Magic Lantern more appealing.

I'm reading around but still confused. Websites recommend only downloading the stable version but on Magic Lantern's website, I cannot tell which one is the stable version -there is just a link to the nightly builds. Also the nightly builds are for the newest firmware update 1.16, and my 6D has 1.13. Would it be safer for me to download the latest nightly build for the 1.13 or should i update to 1.16? if so, how do I know which one is the stable one?

Also, whats a good memory card for least problems with Magic Lantern?

Finally, what are good practices with using Magic Lantern? I'm just reading a lot right now, and randomly finding out that you should turn off the auto sensor cleaning function and use Magic Lantern on a user custom mode -are there any other tips like these that I should be mindful of?

Thank you for your time!

What Do You Want To See in the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV?

HTML:
The replacement for the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is going to have some very big shoes to fill and cannot be an incremental improvement of the affordable workhorse of the Canon lineup. The EOS 5D Mark IV has to be a revolutionary upgrade in performance, or people may start looking elsewhere for a camera body solution. I do believe the entire market is waiting to see what Canon does with the EOS 5D Mark IV.</p>
<p><a href="https://fstoppers.com/profile/alexcooke" target="_blank">Alex Cooke</a> at Fstoppers has run down his list of features he’d like to see in the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, some of them are no-brainers and should be in any camera costing thousands of dollars. Below is the a list of the ones I agree on and would like to see in the next EOS 5D. You can <a href="https://fstoppers.com/originals/5d-mark-iv-may-well-make-or-break-canon-86462" target="_blank">read his full list here</a>.</p>
<ul>
<li>
<blockquote><p><strong>Sync Speed

</strong>Did you know the original 1D had a sync speed of 1/500 s? (<em>*cr note, this was because the original EOS-1D was CCD. thanks neuro</em>) I know a lot of strobists who shoot with the 5D Mark III and are continually frustrated by its sync speed of 1/200 s. Sure, there’s high-speed sync, but right now, in the eyes of many pros, Canon is in a position of needing to reestablish itself as an innovator. An ultra-fast sync speed would be a great distinguishing feature.</p></blockquote>
</li>
<li>
<blockquote><p><strong>Long Exposures

</strong>The fact that in 2015, I can’t input an arbitrary exposure time without resorting to bulb mode and a trigger is a little bewildering and frankly, makes me think it’s a way to push me toward buying accessories. This should be a no-brainer.</p></blockquote>
</li>
<li>
<blockquote><p><strong>Lighted AF Points

</strong>The 5D Mark III has a stellar AF system that performs admirably in low light. There’s only one problem: I can’t see my AF points in low light. For some reason, when shooting in Servo mode, the black AF points do not illuminate, meaning in a dark reception hall, I have to try to follow dimly lit subjects with, you guessed it, a black AF point. The best AF system in the world doesn’t mean much to me if I don’t know what I’m focusing on.</p></blockquote>
</li>
<li>
<blockquote><p><strong>Spot Metering Linked to AF Point

</strong>This is a feature I highly suspect Canon left out of the 5D Mark III to distinguish it from the 1D X, but I really think this is a mistake. Top level cameras should be distinguished not only by their build, but by state of the art and innovative features exclusive to that echelon by virtue of their newness and novelty. Purposely excluding a highly useful and sensible feature that even a camera released in 1998possessed from your second best camera seems to be a bit of a snub to working professionals.</p></blockquote>
</li>
<li>
<blockquote><p><strong>Dynamic Range and File Latitude

</strong>This is a big one. With Sony and Nikon’s cameras consistently possessing around 14 stops of dynamic range, the 11.7 stops of the 5D Mark III are starting to feel a bit antiquated. Coupled with its poor shadow recovery, I frequently feel a bit restricted when shooting scenes with a large dynamic range.</p></blockquote>
</li>
</ul>
<p>From what people tell me, the most important upgrades they want to see is in regards to image quality and especially dynamic range. Canon is bringing 15 stops of dynamic range to the Cinema EOS line, and photographers definitely want to see that brought to the EOS stills line. High ISO performance improvements are also high on most photographers lists of wants.</p>
<p>I still don’t believe we’re going to see 4K brought to the EOS 5D line, but what sort of videography improvements do people want to see from the EOS 5D Mark IV?</p>

Steadicam Merlin / Solo

Does anybody have an idea if the steadicam merlin is compatible with the steadicam solo arm and vest? I have a merlin, but no arm and vest and I would love to get one, but the stores have started selling the solo instead of the merlin. I can't find any statment if they are compatible, even though the vests look similar. Does anybody have experience with the solo vest?

Leica SL Coming in October?

This tradition is what drives us to achieve and gives us the power to reinvent ourselves time and again. <p>We cordially invite you to a celebration of photography in the the spirit of “Das Wesentliche”. <p>It looks like a new Leica system is going to be coming for PhotoPlus next month, and it’ll be called the Leica SL. The new camera system is likely going to replace the T and X lines down the road.</p>
<p>About the Leica SL:</p>
<ul>
<li>Full Frame</li>
<li>Interchangeable AF lenses</li>
<li>Not an M replacement</li>
<li>Bulkier than the Q & M cameras</li>
<li>EVF</li>
<li>Lighter weight than the M</li>
<li>Bundled with Summicron 50 f/2</li>
<li>In-body stabilization</li>
<li>Priced around $8000</li>
</ul>
<p>I honestly can’t wait to see this system. I think the Leica Q was a home run for what it is.</p>

9/11 Tribute in Light

http://www.losttracksoftime.com/p97017160

On March 11, 2001 (the six month anniversary of 9/11) two beams of light representing the fallen World Trade Center towers was illuminated for the first time in New York City. Since then, every September 11th the "Tribute in Light" shines from sunset to sunrise the next morning.

This year I was granted permission to photograph from the roof of the 6-floor parking garage where the memorial is generated. I left work at 2:30 on Friday, had dinner at a popular diner only a block from Ground Zero, photographing by dusk, and was allowed onto the roof at 10pm.

88 Xenon light fixtures, 7000 watts drawing 265amps at 28VDC each. The white specs in the beams are bugs, moths, seagulls and migrating songbirds. Multiple times I went inside the squares, it was incredibly peaceful and soothing laying on my back looking up inside the beam at the heavens.

The photos linked above are mine, taken from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey City, Hoboken, and Staten Island; from this year and three years prior.

Please feel free to share this link with everyone - we should never forget!
