New ZEISS SLR Lens Family for ZE and ZF.2 Mounts

HTML:
In a very well kept secret, ZEISS has announced a new DSLR lens lineup series called Milvus</p>
<p><em>Six new focal lengths: manual focus lenses optimized for high-resolution cameras</em></p>
<p><strong>OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 10/09/2015.

</strong>The new ZEISS Milvus SLR lens family contains six focal lengths with ZE or ZF.2 mounts for DSLR cameras from Canon and Nikon1. The ZEISS Milvus lens family with precise manual focus offers high and consistent image performance across all focal lengths. The new lenses are the ZEISS answer to the current trend toward sensors with increasingly high resolution which, in turn, require higher and higher image quality. They are therefore ideal for current DSLR cameras and also for mirrorless system cameras of the Sony α7 series via an adapter solution and offer the customer excellent value for the money for professional applications. An equally important benefit: their high contrast rendition and low level of stray light ensure that the lenses meet the latest video standards such as HDR (High Dynamic Range) and resolutions of 6K and more. For the user, they open up the field of professional video and cine applications. The ZEISS Milvus lenses will be delivered to dealers in October 2015.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p><strong>Diversity of focal lengths for wide spectrum of applications

</strong>With its diversity of focal lengths, the ZEISS Milvus lens family covers many of the photographer’s important fields of application where the benefits of manual focus lenses can be optimally utilized. “We want to provide users with the freedom to use the focus position as an artistic tool because it is one of the most important creative possibilities available to photographers,” Christophe Casenave, Product Manager for ZEISS Camera Lenses, emphasizes. The ZEISS Milvus lenses are therefore targeted at all owners of a high-resolution DSLR camera, offering them considerable added value. They are also suitable for photographers who have specialized in applications which the six focal lengths optimally support, e.g. portrait, landscape and macro photography.</p>
<p>The ZEISS Milvus lens family will initially consist of the following six focal lengths: ZEISS Milvus 2.8/21, ZEISS Milvus 2/35, ZEISS Milvus 1.4/50, ZEISS Milvus 1.4/85 as well as the two macro lenses ZEISS Milvus 2/50M and ZEISS Milvus 2/100M. Further focal lengths will be added to the ZEISS Milvus lens family over the next few years. “With this diversity of extremely high-quality SLR lenses, we are underscoring that, with our Milvus lenses, we can supply the right focal length for almost any application or personal preference,” Casenave says.</p>
<p><strong>Modern product design

</strong>The ZEISS Milvus lenses continue the award-winning ZEISS product design already featured in the ZEISS Otus lenses. The advanced design ensures excellent image performance and outstanding ergonomic convenience. The easy-grip focus ring enables precise manual focusing for highly precise photography. The robust all-metal barrel of the ZEISS Milvus lenses guarantees many years of reliable use. They are protected against dust and spray water. The robust metal lens shade is an integral part of the overall product design and is a standard feature of all ZEISS Milvus lenses on delivery.</p>
<p><strong>Fully compatible with DSLR cameras

</strong>The ZEISS Milvus lenses support all important operating modes of DSLR cameras (e.g. aperture priority, shutter priority and program modes, as well as manual time and exposure settings) The ZEISS Milvus lenses feature an interface that transmits the lens data to the camera (e.g. focal length, set aperture etc.). This information is saved to the photo’s EXIF data.</p>
<p><strong>Features for demanding users

</strong>“The excellent image performance of the ZEISS Milvus lenses, also in difficult light conditions, is sharply focused on the requirements of current and future high-performance digital cameras,” says Casenave. The lenses offer a harmonious bokeh and excellent reflection reduction thanks to T*® anti-reflective coating from ZEISS. The further optimization of the lens coating reduces ghosting, flare and shading effects in critical light situations. All ZEISS Milvus lenses have a Floating Elements Design which compensates for aberrations at different distance settings. This is achieved by varying the axial distance between individual lens elements or groups. The adjustment of the distance between elements is coupled to the distance setting so that this always results in the right correction.</p>
<p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LlVcXAYIM28" width="728" height="409" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p><strong>ZEISS Milvus lenses for video

</strong>The new ZEISS Milvus lenses enable high-quality film recordings with soft and cinematic bokeh. “With their extremely high contrast rendition, the lenses meet the latest 6K video standards and display uniform color characteristics,” Casenave continues. All six ZEISS Milvus lenses have an exceptionally long rotation angles of the focus ring for precise focusing. The practical, rubber-covered focus ring features outstanding grip properties for optimal focusing. The ‘de-click’ function in the ZF.2 mount lenses allows filmmakers to adjust the aperture freely and smoothly, enabling professional results even in changing light conditions.</p>
<p><strong>ZEISS Milvus 1.4/50

</strong>The newly designed ZEISS Milvus 1.4/50 lens has ten elements in eight groups. The new 50 mm lens features one aspherical optical surface and four elements made of special glass materials, and uses the ZEISS Distagon optical design. This makes it the second standard lens after the ZEISS Otus 1.4/55 to incorporate this high-performance optical design. The advanced ZEISS Distagon optical design enables very good image performance across the entire image field, even at full aperture, despite the high speed. The ZEISS Milvus 1.4/50 on a full-frame camera corresponds to the perspective of the human eye and can therefore be used for many different purposes.</p>
<p><strong>ZEISS Milvus 1.4/85

</strong>The newly designed ZEISS Milvus 1.4/85 short tele lens has eleven elements in nine groups and features the ZEISS Planar optical design. The ZEISS Milvus 1.4/85 is suitable, above all, for portrait photography. This lens is an absolute must for compositions where the main subject is to be isolated and emphasized against a beautiful bokeh background. The purely spherical optical design generates a harmonious bokeh, and the use of special glass materials ensures extremely low chromatic aberration.</p>
<p><strong>Availability

</strong>Advance orders can now be placed for the ZEISS Milvus lenses. Global delivery to dealers will commence in October 2015.</p>
<p>All of the new lenses are available for preorder at B&H Photo & Adorama.</p>

<p>Zeiss will announce a new Otus lens, as <a href="http://diglloyd.com/blog/2015/20150907_1458-Germany-ZeissPressEvent.html" target="_blank">various media types</a> are in Germany today for the unveiling. It will be a fast wide angle prime, the last we heard it was going to be a 25mm f/1.4, but nothing has been confirmed. I think it’s safe to say it’ll be somewhere between 24mm and 35mm.</p>

First Photo of the Cinema EOS 8K Camera

HTML:
The Canon EXPO 2015 opens today in New York City and we have been sent the first photo from the floor of the 8K Cinema EOS camera coming from Canon.</p>
<p>We were told a few things about the setup in the image:</p>
<blockquote>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Body is identical to C300II but it records externally using an intermediate module then to Four Odyssey 7Q+ 4K recorders (Four 4096×2016 signals making up DCI 8K) up to 60p.</span></p>
</blockquote>
<p class="p1">Keep in mind that the <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/canon-developing-8k-cinema-eos-camera-120mp-dslr-8k-display/" target="_blank">recent development announcements</a> are technology demonstrations, and are not showcasing finished consumer products. The external (and internal) design of the 8K camera may change when it comes to market.</p>
<p class="p1">There should be a lot more coming from the show floor today.</p>
<p class="p1"><em>thanks Ebrahim</em></p>

Using (old) DSLR or point and shoot as a webcam?

Hi,
I have, as I suspect many of you have as well, a number of older DSLR or point and shoot cameras which get little use. I wondered if there was a way to use some of this older but working hardware for new purposes. What I had in mind was to connect a DSLR with a wide angle lens and use that as a webcam. So I checked Magic Lantern and there seemed to be no mention of their software enabling that type of usage. A similar broader web search came up with little as well. I recall some early point and shoot digital cameras could be used in this way, but none recently.

Has anyone done this or knows of a DSLR or point and shoot being used in this way? If so how?

Any thoughts on 'Live Photos'?

So I just had the Apple announcements on in the background and heard the new 'Live Photo' spiel, to be honest I was pretty impressed and thought that is a dynamic way of presenting images, that kind of tech would work perfectly for wedding albums on disc, it might even be the death of the darn Ken Burns Effect!

Anybody else impressed with the idea, underwhelmed, or other thoughts?

Canon should release cameras like the auto industry

There are lots of topics and posts in this forums that are great but am getting so tired of the complainers when a new body is released that is not ideal for their type of photography. too many pixels, not enough DR... GAWD....

Imagine if the auto industry only launched one vehicle at a time, introducing the Dodge Ram truck. all the city commuters would be cursing Dodge that they are breaking their bank and polluting the world, would have to listen to those whiners until the next eco-friendly is introduced, then all the people wanting trucks would be firing off how these tree huggers are ruining the industry and the fact dodge released an eco-friendly car is now ruining their life. So silly.

Maybe if canon released all the new models at once, everyone could be happy and pick what body works for them and their needs. Just stop complaining... so over it.

btw - I am a commercial studio photographer and love both my 5Dmkiii and my 5DS R. both awesome for their own strengths and choose to use each one accordingly. Are they perfect, maybe not, but I use my skills and kit to achieve my desired result and don't blame my gear for the reason my photo sucks. (that's on me)

German fotoMAGAZIN Review of New Tamron Prime Lenses

The German fotoMAGAZIN already had the two new Tamron prime lenses SP 1.8/35 and 45 mm DiVC USD for da detailed review in the 10/2015 issue.

Both get a 5 star "super" test result (best label).

They say that in their tests
- both have only litte vignetting at F1.8 (APS-C: about 0,8 aperture steps, FF: -1,1).
- both have only little barrel distortion (up to max -0.8% at FF)
- both deliver a really high resolution at both APS-C and FF
- both have excellent mechanical built
- both have outstanding MFD in their class

Conclusion:
"The restart of the SP line is a real success."
"Both prime lenses deliver optically and mechanically superb results."

Sounds very promissing to me.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Talk [CR1]

HTML:
Specification lists this detailed about a camera a few months away are rarely accurate, but we’re posting it for the purpose of discussion. These specifications come from an unknown source.</p>
<p>What’s most interesting is the mention of the camera coming with a version of Android which will replace the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRYOS" target="_blank">DRYOS</a> system developed by Canon that is on the current EOS 6D. What advantages that could have, I’ll let the software techs out there comment in the forum.</p>
<p>I will note that this source said they’d be replacing VXWorks with Android, but Canon switched to DRYOS from VXWorks quite a while ago.</p>
<p>Canon EOS 6D Mark II Rumored Specifications:</p>
<ul>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">24mp Full Frame CMOS</span></li>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">1.5 stops better at higher ISO</span></li>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">Low-light autofocus (centre point) at -5 EV</span></li>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">Two AF systems are currently being tested or the EOS 6D Mark II and which was chosen is unknown at this time. There will be more AF points than the current camera.</span></li>
<li class="p1">WiFi with NFC and GPS</li>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">Wireless battery charging with the Qi standard</span></li>
<li class="p1"><span class="s1">Internally Canon switches from VxWorks (Could have meant DRYOS) to an Android-based embedded OS, 6D Mark II will be the first Android-based camera from Canon.</span></li>

<p>Again, this is a CR1 rumor and we’re posting it more for the interesting discussion that could come from the potential software changes that are reported here. This comes from a completely unknown source, but it’s plausible enough to not be CR0.</p>

Canon Develops Material Appearance Image-Processing Technology

HTML:
<strong>TOKYO, September 8, 2015</strong>—Canon Inc. announced today that it has developed material appearance image-processing technology that, through the acquisition of material appearance information using digital cameras, enables printing that faithfully recreates such material appearance characteristics as gloss, plasticity and transparency, qualities that change in appearance depending on the orientation of lighting or the angle from which an object is viewed.</p>
<p>Material appearance characteristics are those qualities that determine an object’s look and feel, such as gloss, plasticity, surface contours and transparency. The acquisition of this information, such as surface contours and reflectance, in addition to color data, is essential for reproducing an object’s texture in photographs and other forms of printout.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>Canon’s newly developed material appearance image-processing technology makes use of multiple Canon digital cameras, which are used to capture images of the target object, facilitating the digitization of such material appearance information as subtle surface contours and gloss. The digitized material appearance information is then used to faithfully reproduce the material appearance properties of the original object using a (UV-curable*) printing technology that is optimally controlled in accordance with its print characteristics.</p>
<p>Capitalizing on Canon’s expertise in image input and output devices, material appearance image-processing technology makes possible not only the high-definition representation of color characteristics, but also the printing of various material appearance qualities, such as those of metal, cloth and other materials. Additionally, as the technology is capable of faithfully recreating the material appearance characteristics of the original target object, it can be used to reproduce historically significant oil paintings and other valuable cultural properties. The creation of such reproductions could allow viewers to experience new ways of art appreciation by feeling the reproduced artwork, while enabling the original artwork to be preserved under optimal storage conditions.</p>
<p>In addition to the high-resolution photo printing technologies the Company has cultivated to date, Canon will further strengthen the development of this technology with the aim of expanding its application in such areas as wallpaper and other interior-use materials, advertising signage and product packaging.</p>

<li>An inkjet printing technology that uses UV-curable inks, which instantly dry and adhere to surfaces when exposed to ultraviolet light. UV-curable inks have a hard finish and are highly resistant to water and direct sunlight.</li>

APS-H & 120 MP announcements: revealed too soon?

(CR admin please keep this thread separate from the main 120 MP discussion, thx.)

It's been a wow sort of Labor Day weekend. In adjacent 24 hour news cycles, we hear that:

  • An SLR with "approximately 120 effective megapixels" is coming our way.
  • APS-H may not be dead after all, as it's apparently involved with a 250 MP sensor.
  • Chasing the highest end 8K video on Cinema rigs is apparently more important to Canon than allowing widespread 4K use on SLRs. ::)

I appreciate that Canon must generate buzz about new tech that may not be in final form. I also appreciate there is a ton more to a camera than its MP count and we are missing a ton of answers right now.

...but am I the only one thinking that these announcements smack of desperation?

  • Why tip your hand on something so clearly far down the road like this?

  • Why drop all three announcements together and not periodically dole out the news to keep the Canon faithful excited over a longer period of time?

  • Why commit to something that may steal the energy from products that they are trying to sell today or in the near future? Without a date listed, anyone who was sitting on the fence over upgrading to a 5DS (or any other future high MP body under 120 MP) would clearly climb off of it knowing that the 120 MP rig is eventually coming.

Every imaging company has broad ambitions in their 5-10 year pipeline, but few are foolish enough to share those ambitions as they will become market expectations -- the consumers, the analysts, etc. Every investor call Canon will now have to fend off questions of when this new hotness is coming. So all this feels like Cortes has burned his ships upon reaching the new world and making it clear that there is no turning back. That's not the Canon I know at all.

Advice on 300mm F2.8 L

I'm considering purchasing a 300mm f2.8 lens to add to my kit for sports. I'd like to know if there are any users out there using the mk I version. If so, what do you think of it compared to the mk II version. This lens will be used on both crop and ff cameras.

I'm not opposed to used or a previous generation so long as it is still servicable.

Thanks for your feedback.

Acadia was just a little older than 4 months when this photo was taken and was having a great time exploring our local dog park (and was being way to cute while doing it) :)

Original photography from 2009 using a Canon EOS T1i body with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. Processed in 2015 using Silver EFEX Pro as a Lightroom plugin for the B&W conversion.

Canon Developing 8K Cinema EOS Camera, 120mp DSLR & 8K Display

Featuring a resolution of approximately 120 effective megapixels, the SLR camera now being developed will incorporate a Canon-developed high-pixel-density CMOS sensor within the current EOS-series platform, which will realize compatibility with the Company’s diverse interchangeable EF lens lineup.3 The high-resolution images that the camera will be capable of producing will recreate the three-dimensional texture, feel and presence of subjects, making them appear as if they are really before one’s eyes. The camera will facilitate a level of resolution that is more than sufficient for enlarged poster-sized printout while also enabling images to be cropped and trimmed without sacrificing image resolution and clarity.

A New 85L is on the Way [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that Canon is actively working on a new 85L, and we should see a replacement some time before 2016 is over, and possibly for Photokina in September of 2016.</p>
<p>The new 85L will incorporate the blue spectrum refractive element of the recently announced <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/preorder-the-new-canon-ef-35mm-f1-4l-ii/">EF 35mm f/1.4L II</a>.</p>
<p>The new lens will be weather sealed, have a new manual focus system, a faster autofocus system as well as being lighter.</p>
<p>Could the new 85L be f/1.4 instead of f/1.2? It’s possible, they went slower moving from the EF 50 f/1.0L to the 50 f/1.2L. Although, having the lens at f/1.2 does give Canon some bragging rights for DSLR lenses.</p>

First Review of New Tamron Prime Lenses

HTML:
Tamron recently announced two new prime lenses, a 35mm f/1.8 VC and a 45mm f/1.8 VC, both lenses are full frame compatible. Krolop & Gerst put the new lenses through their paces with a very extensive review with a lot of image samples and direct comparisons to the Sigma and Canon offerings that are around the same price.</p>
<p>All of the sample images in the review were shot with the Canon EOS 5DS R, and you’ll see the Tamron lenses mate very well with Canon’s most detailed oriented, full frame camera.</p>
<p><strong>35mm & 45mm, why?</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>35mm and 45mm seem to lie very close together, maybe too close? The decision for these two focal lenghts raised more than a few eyebrows… when do I use which lens and why? Well, the answer to that is quite simple. The 35mm lens clearly has the look of a wide angle lens while the 45mm has the look of a standard lens. Whoever wants to be where the action is should decide for the 35mm (which is more suitable for APS-C cameras as well, as the 45mm lens is too long for most „everyday scenes“) – BUT – if you like taking portraits on an APS-C camera, the 45mm is nearly perfect though… <a href="http://blog.krolop-gerst.com/technik/review-tamron-sp-35mm-45mm-f1-8-di-vc-usd-english/" target="_blank">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>
<p>Both lenses are set to begin shipping at the end of September 2015.</p>

A little petty, but still fun!

I am a part of a photography group on FB for wedding photographers. I posted a screen shot of an image I took that was drastically underexposed and needed +5 stops of exposure correction along with +100 shadow correction to even be usable. I didn't mention the camera I used, but just comment that I was impressed with how far technology has come. There are a whole lot of Nikon lovers in this group that rave on and on about the D750. Of course I wanted someone to step in it, and I tried to lead them to do it. I know it is petty and immature, however I am still satisfied with the results and make no apologies for it.

4K and Beyond: Canon Launches Two High Performance 2/3” Field Broadcast Lenses

HTML:
United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 7 September 2015 – Canon today introduces two new 2/3” 4K field lenses – the UHD DIGISUPER 86 (UJ86x9.3B) and UHD DIGISUPER 90 (UJ90x9B). Delivering exceptional optical performance, with the UHD DIGISUPER 86 (UJ86x9.3B) surpassing even 4K resolution, both offer outstanding focal range and are ideal for use within live broadcast production environments.</p>
<p><strong>First class 4K image performance</strong> ?

The UHD DIGISUPER 86 (UJ86x9.3B) and UHD DIGISUPER 90 (UJ90x9B) are part of Canon’s evolving 2/3” 4K lens line-up and join the recently launched CJ12ex4.3B in the range. Both provide professionals with the freedom to shoot live broadcast or sport events in stunning 4K quality, and in a first for Canon’s 2/3” lens line-up, the UHD DIGISUPER 86 (UJ86x9.3B) offers resolving power beyond 4K.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The new lenses ensure exceptional resolution from the image centre to the edges, at both telephoto and wide angle, thanks to their advanced optical construction. Additionally, an increased use of fluorite and UD glass, combined with Canon’s expert use of coatings, results in exceptional control over ghosting and flare with sharp, high contrast images supporting a large number of tones.</p>
<p><strong>Outstanding focal range and versatility

</strong>The new models provide ultimate flexibility – the UHD DIGISUPER 86 (UJ86x9.3B) has an 86x zoom, with a focal range of 9.3mm – 800mm, and the UHD DIGISUPER 90 (UJ90x9B) goes even further to 90x, with a 9mm – 810mm focal range. To ensure operators can capture a diverse range of scenes, both lenses also feature a built-in 2x extender which doubles the telephoto power, while maintaining exceptional 4K resolution.</p>
<p>4K scenarios such as live sport, do not tolerate even the slightest amount of shake. Thanks to Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer technologies, the UHD DIGISUPER 86 (UJ86x9.3B) and UHD DIGISUPER 90 (UJ90x9B) deliver crisp, clear results, acquiring maximum precision, even during panning. This is essential for tracking moving subjects at sports matches and events, while compensating for swing-back. Additionally, operators are able to keep subjects in focus, even in challenging situations, such as when long focus but shallow depth of field is required.</p>
<p><strong>Built to perform

</strong>The UHD DIGISUPER 86 (UJ86x9.3B) and UHD DIGISUPER 90 (UJ90x9B) feature a compact design, comparable in size and weight to current HD 2/3” field lenses, allowing easy integration into operating environments. Both lenses also incorporate a 20-pin connector for integration with virtual systems and are fully compatible with existing Canon accessories designed for 2/3” HD Canon field lenses.</p>
<p><strong>UHD DIGISUPER 86 (UJ86x9.3B) key benefits:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Outstandingly high resolution 2/3” 4K field lens with 86x zoom and 9.3-800mm focal length (up to 1600mm with 2x built-in extender)</li>
<li>Class-leading beyond-4K performance right to the edge of the image and throughout the zoom range for unmatched quality</li>
<li>High contrast and high resolution in all wavelength regions of the B, G and R channels in the 4K and beyond 4K frequency bands</li>

MORE Canon Mega-Pixels, 250 of them, but none for you!

Well, just trying to play on the other thread here..
http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=27593.0

But Canon's latest press release goes on about an APS-H sensor with ~250MP (19,580 x 12,600 pixels)

www.canon.com/news/2015/sep07e.html

excerpt:

When installed in a camera, the newly developed sensor was able to capture images enabling the distinguishing of lettering on the side of an airplane flying at a distance of approximately 18 km from the shooting location.2

2. Image capture employed a combination of optical and digital zooming while distinguishing of image content was realized through the magnification of an approximately 1/40,000th-sized area of the captured image.

Trench Whistle

I believe this is a trench whistle used by my maternal grandfather in the First World War. He was an NCO with the Canadian Expeditionary Force (43rd Cameron Highlanders) and would have been issued a whistle to relay orders during the noise of battle. He was also a Boy Scout leader but there is no Scout logo on the whistle which leads me to believe this was his trench whistle. I did a bit of a search and could not find a picture of a trench whistle with similar markings, so I'm doing some speculating here. I posted B&W versions but like these better.
