5D3 - question - deleting files off both cards

On the 5D3, when I delete files from card using the camera's menu (i.e. without taking the cards out) it deletes the files (except protected files) from the CF card but the SD card files are still there. (I have the camera set to write to both cards simultaneously.) Is there a way to get it to delete both cards without taking the cards out? I looked in the manual and checked different options, can't seem to figure it out. Thanks.

Flash modifier: Sto-Fen vs. MagBounce vs. MagSphere

Hey gang,

I rarely use a flash, but I have a 600 EX-RT for use when I'm in a pinch.

I've just been asked by some family to informally shoot some engagement shots (not a paying gig, I am no pro), so I wanted to have a fresh look at my light modifier. I just have the vanilla old Sto-Fen diffuser, and it does gobble up a ton of power -- I'm often manually compensating significantly to get what I need on backlit subjects.

Has anyone used the new MagSphere or MagBounce? Whaddya think? Is one a better call for on-camera flash use? I'm not sure I need both given how infrequently I'm pulling out the speedlite, so if you had to choose one, which would you recommend?

Thx,
A

Choosing a Printer for Light Use

Is there a good-quality photo printer that would be cost-effective at just ~10 pages per month? I don't need high-end art-quality, but something comparable to a Pixma Pro-100. Although I could print at a local business, there's a convenience in having it at home, and also the option to learn a bit about photo printing.

I currently own a monochrome laser printer, and it covers most of my needs. I've thought about buying a color printer for occasional photo printing, as well as routine color documents. It used to be true that color printers burned ink whether used or not, either "evaporating" it, or requiring aggressive cleaning cycles for clogged heads.

Does anyone have experience with a light-duty photo printer?

Thank you.

1DX II AF Points with F8 Lenses

As a Wildlife Photographer I use the 2x Extenter on the 600 f4 regulary and then end up with an F8 Lens setup of course.

With the current 1DX the F8 Lens setup is usable in many situations for myself - eg for moving subjects like consitent flying birds in flight. However - when it comes comes to image composition it can be really a mess having to use the central AF point only.
For non moving subjects the back focus AF technique is a workaround of course - but if the subjects moves (eg head) I would strongly prefer to be able to use servo AF - especially when the subject may have come really close and DOF is super - narrow. Changing extenters is not an option for my style of shooting due to enviroment / fear of subject etc.

So speaking for myself the "number one killing feature of a new Canon 1D is implementation of (much) more usuable AF points with F8 lenses.

Anyone to agree?

Advice for new 24(28-70(105)mm lens needed

Hello!

Weeks ago I saw the "light at the end of the tunnel", when an downhill cyclist rammed me and my photographic gear. So, as I can leave (my) the trauma center in some days, I am looking for an new lens with an focal rage of about 24-70 or 105mm. The crashed lens was an 24-70mm 2,8 L. Now I am looking for a new one, as my remaining lens is an 28-70 2.8L (unsharp outside of the center) and I´d like to get an newer and sharper one.
I need it for landscape photography and as an allround lens inside. -remaining bodies: 7DII, 6D. Should be very sharp. AF as allround-lens preferred.
Or should I buy primes (24mm, 35mm, 50mm,70mm)?

Thx

6D weather sealing

The 6D is a great camera, very straightforward to use and it produces high quality images. However, on a trip to the Amazon, while photographing on a river beach where the temperature was about 35C, my primary 6D body suddenly went crazy. Touching the front dial caused the shutter/aperture settings to cycle constantly, and other settings e.g. ISO just kept changing randomly, without any input from me. After a few minutes the shutter button locked up. I switched off, removed the batteries and stashed the camera in a cool shady cabin, and after 2 days of "rest" it resumed normal functioning.

Meanwhile I had switched to my back-up 6D body, which operated fine for the remaining 3 days of the trip, but the high humidity regularly fogged the viewfinder, despite storing overnight in a sealed poly bag, and giving the camera an hour to "acclimatise" each day before starting to shoot.

A friend of mine who also has a 6D had a very similar experience, with his camera developing a mind of its own and randomly cycling itself through the full range of settings without any user input.

So, for what it's worth, my advice would be to steer clear of "budget" full frame cameras if you need to shoot in tropical heat and humidity. I've since upgraded to a 5DMkiii and 7DMkii, neither of which have yet given me any weather-related problems despite being used in similar tropical conditions in South America, Africa and India.

Fewer megapixels please!

Well done Canon for winning (temporarily) the megapixel race with the 5DsR. I'm sure it will sell by the bucketload to those who are impressed by high numbers and paper specifications.

But how about the rest of us - 99% of advanced DSLR users don't need or want such high resolution. 24-28 megapixels is more than enough for me as a pro wildlife photographer. What is far far more important is the ability to produce high quality noise-free, high dynamic range images at high ISO settings (1600-6400).

The 1Dx achieves this, but is heavy, bulky, very expensive, and most of us just don't need 14fps. Hoping for a 5Dx - 24 megapixels, 6fps, AF and metering system adopted from 1Dx, with high dynamic range and high IQ at high ISO.

My kids have thwarted my upgrade plans

*Sigh*.... I ended up in a dilemma that is pretty cool. Typically with any hobby gear of mine, I upgrade over time using the proceeds from the sale of my previous equipment. I think that most of us do that here on this forum. But, a year ago the adult photography group leader of our local 4-H club decided to retire from the position and with no one else to step in, I volunteered.

The first year was rough. Most of the kids who signed up for the photography project were no more than 10 years old. I had to convey general photography terms and techniques into something that youth would understand. It wasn't easy, but in the end I had 4 of my students placing 1st - 3rd at our district contests in their respective categories (food, agriculture, etc.).

Both of my kids joined the photography group and not because I made them :) and this is the dilemma. Both of them now enjoy photography and want to keep doing it. My son uses my T1i, my daughter my 60D, and I use my 5D (and 60D when she's not using it). They are also at that age where the more a lens can zoom, the better. So they've been using (fighting over) my 70-300 IS USM. I'm a mean dad and won't let them use my 70-200. So now I'm stuck, or rather, now I have to save a little longer.

I normally would have traded off my T1i and 70-300, which I no longer use, and I wanted to sell my 60 macro and 10-22 to fund a 16-35 f4 IS. This would give me a great FF kit for my 5D and what ever future camera I decide to trade up too. But, now that my kids enjoy photography, I don't want to get rid of those cameras and lenses and reduce their creative options. I still may sell the 70-300 and use the money to purchase two 55-250 STM's so both kids will have access to tele-zooms on photography walks.

It's my dilemma, but in this case, it's a fun one to have!

Do we all See Color the Same?

I finally reached the pointr with my vision where I had cataract surgery. Its a quick and minor surgery, removing your natural lens from the eye and putting in a artificial one.

What I did not expect was to see different colors in my repaired eye. I asked my wife about it, since she had the same surgery last year, and she confirmed it. Then, I asked the Doctor this morning when I went back for a check. He said that it happens, and that my brain will adjust.

After thinking about it, it seems that my cloudy lens may have been filtering out blue and red light to produce a more yellow -green tone.

This made me wonder just how accurate my editing of color images has been. I've been reconsidering getting a color calibrator. I have not scored well on the color vision tests, so I'm thinking the cataracts could have something to do with that.

Has anyone else had the same experience?

5DS R tethered live view focus problems

I have my 5DS R connected to my iMac in the current EOS utility 3. I am using a Zeiss Makro-plannar 50mm f2 lens which is manual focus. My studio strobes modelling lamp is bright and have a good contrast area to focus on and with my iMac have live view set and zoomed in to 16x to focus. I adjust lens manually, nailed the focus according to live view. I then press my shutter down part way and no focus confirmation beep. hmm, why is that? I snap the pic and view raw... hmm ok but soft. Next shot, I focus through viewfinder and rapidly half depress shutter while micro adjusting focus until I get the focus confirmation beep. I am using the same focus point on the object as live view. However, when I look it in live view at 16x on iMac the focus is way off. I snap the photo and look at Raw.

the results, the second shot that looked blurry in live view but had the camera focus confirmation beep was definitely a sharper final image than the one that I shot previously that looked sharp in live view at 16x but didn't get beep.

Anyone have an idea whats going on? its impossible for me to see the sharpness difference between the two in the viewfinder so either have to rely on micro adjusting for the beep or live view.

My Latest Cooking Video...

Hello!!

Well, has taken me awhile, but I finally managed to get my latest edition of my cooking video finished and published on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLbZG7LWyXE

I also now have a website for my CWI: Cooking While Intoxicated videos...where I keep the recipes, the one for this episode (if you're interested):

http://cookingwhileintoxicated.com/cwi-zucchini-noodles-zoodles-puttanesca-sauce/

The intro is the part I worked and learned a LOT about...lots of first time doing green screen and compositing 2-3 levels of stuff in together...first time pulling a key, etc.

If you watch through till after the credits for my outtakes, you can see in some of them my green screen set up. I found and used some LED Shop lights that I hung on light stands to try to light the screen evenly....worked out pretty nicely. I used a keying method I found on the Video Copilot site that worked well for me once I got the hang of it and understood what he was doing with it...

That method is in his tutorial here:
http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/the_portal/

I found it to be VERY informative on doing keying in After Effects.

I shot this on my 5D3..using the Marvels Cine Style ..for a flat effect. I only have one camera and me as the cameraman, sound man..etc. I'm a one man show so far, so the parts that look multi-camera are me just planning takes and editing around them.

I did run into some trouble on parts, where my Rode SmartLAV mic plugged into my OLD iPhone 3GS didn't record or I forgot to hit the button, and had to go with the sound from my Rode Video mic on camera. I had to learn to use the audio filters for dropping out the room noise, etc...I learned and used noise gates, limiters, compressors, etc.

I edited in FCPX...I'm still on OSX Mavericks, so it is an older version of FCPX...I"ll be upgrading all soon now that the project is finished.

I used Davinci Resolve 11 for color grading, and of course After Effects for FX and graphics/titles.

I found that my macbook pro with FCPX has some weird problem showing things colored the same as Resolve and AE show....I've read this is something that FCPX is doing on its own and can't really be fixed. I'll see if the upgraded version fixes this.

I'm planning once I upgrade my operating system, to also start looking at Davinci Resolve 12, and possibly consider moving to it as my NLE...since it runs now on OpenCL...I hear the horsepower requirements for it is a bit more reasonable.

Anyway. that's what I used an shot with.

I appreciate if ya'll give it a watch, and let me know what you think....suggestions, etc. If you do like it, please feel free to show to friends or social media.

Thank you all!!

My most used lens - Rated by wear and tear

I was looking at my lenses the other day and I was thinking to myself that instead of looking in Lightroom for my lens usage...that it was far easier to inspect my lenses for wear. The more worn and shabby...the more I obviously use and abuse this lens.
So here's my list:

16-35IIL - on it's 2nd objective lens and the metal hood ring is very worn and old looking. The rubbers have a tired grey look to them. the chrome lens mount is quite beaten up. The hood has never been used.

35mm f1.4L, looks pretty fresh, although the focus rubber is looking tired and patchy. The hood ring has some marks as does the lens mount. The hood is scuffed and marked.

24-70 f2.8 L, all the rubbers are patchy and the lens hood wobbles, the hood is scuffed and marked but the lens looks quite fresh still.

135mm f2.0 L, the rubbers are in good shape but this lens barrel is knocked about and loads of dents and marks. Three screws missing from the objective lens surround and the lens mount ring really needs replacing. Some times the manual AF ring sticks...

24mm f1.2 L... looks like the day I brought it...hardly used. Says a lot...

85IIL, I use this lens a LOT and yet it shows no sign of visible wear except the lens mount is a bit worn.

100mm macro LIS, again, hardly used.

70-200 f2.8 LIS II, only the lens mount shows wear. I have replaced the AF window...but this is one tough lens. The hood is badly busted up.

TSe 17L and fisheye 8-15L, again...immaculate and hardly used.

400mm f2.8 LIS, a few marks and scratches on the body. I swapped out the tripod foot for a RRS variant, so that looks new. The lens mount shows a lot of wear.

While all these lenses show some signs of wear, optically they are all perfect (except for a little dust) but it's always amazed me how much professional abuse / use a Canon L lens can take.

What's your wear and tear like? Shall we do pictures too?

Wi-Fi / GPS on 5D MK IV - Patent

I'm going to start a rumor that the 5D MK IV will have GPS or Wi-Fi ;)

Obviously, its CR0, mere speculation!

This is based on a Patent approved the week of August 18.

Its Patent number US 9,113,062 B2

Here is a snipet from the description. As I read it, the flash shoe gets in the way of a antenna on a all metal body, so its put under the covering on the sloping surface of the pentaprism. This should overcome any issues with a radio on a all metal body.

"Conventionally, there has been proposed a configuration of an imaging apparatus in which a wireless communication unit is arranged on the top side of a pentaprism in a finder section (see Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2008-244735). However, an accessory shoe for providing communication by being connected to an external device such as a strobe is provided on the visible face of an imaging apparatus. Therefore, the metal section of the accessory shoe disturbs a radio wave to be emitted from or received by the antenna section of the wireless communication unit upon wireless communication, so that stable communication state cannot be obtained. In addition, the clearance between the wireless communication unit and the accessory shoe needs to be ensured, resulting in an undesirable increase in size in the height direction of the imaging apparatus. Accordingly, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2000-75381 discloses a configuration in which the wireless communication unit is arranged on the inclined surface (Dach surface) of the pentaprism such that the accessory shoe does not disturb a radio wave upon wireless communication."

New 17" Pro Printer Coming [CR2]

HTML:
<p><strong>*UPDATE*

</strong>We now believe the new 17″ printer will remain in the ImagePROGRAF lineup and not PIXMA.</p>
<p><strong>Original</strong></p>
<p>We’re told that new PIXMA Pro printer(s) will arrive before the end of the year, most likely at <a href="https://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CE0QFjADahUKEwj-7Mro49rHAhWkmtsKHei8Ayw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.photoplusexpo.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNF0CQe0RE4R1z0E61GggXKcjwYLZg&sig2=j4x03wKbkJyGXDpXbyE-BA&bvm=bv.101800829,d.ZGU" target="_blank">PhotoPlus Expo</a> next month in New York City. The flagship of the line, the PIXMA Pro-1 was announced in October 2011, and a year later the PIXMA Pro-10 and PIXMA Pro-100 printers were announced.</p>
<p>Details of the new printer(s) were sketchy, but we’re told that Canon will finally introduce a 17″ printer for the PIXMA line, and we should expect a new ink technology with the printer.</p>
<p>While I appreciated the build quality of the PIXMA Pro-1, it’d be nice if the new printers weren’t made out of iron.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Tamron 150-600mm Reviewed

I am heading to Africa in January of 2016 for 2 months and was left short with the 70-300mm L on my trip across South America (including the Amazon) and through North America on my 5DMKIII. So decided to buy something a bit bigger to ensure I don't have the same problem again.

I know there are better size comparisons on the web like Brians at the digital picture. But I did a quick one when the lens arrived as I own most of the main tele lenses except the 100-400mm

Just a quick lens size comparison between the Tamron 150-600mm F5-6.3 VC and all the other telephoto lenses I own Canon 70-300mm L F4-5.6 IS vs Canon 70-300mm DO F4.5-5.6 IS vs 70-200mm MKII L F2.8 IS

It is a bit bigger than I thought it was but it has surprised me. Its not any heavier in the hand than the 70-200mm and isn't much bigger either when at 150mm. Its also a much better build quality than I expected and has a gasket on the rear which I also didn't know. It also feels very stable with the 5DMKIII almost perfectly weighted, it doesn't feel cumbersome to me at all. The tripod mount is also very good, its long and easy to use as a handle. I went out and shot a few images with it last night and although its not L quality its very impressive for its size and price. I went and shot some ducks at a pond down the road from me and the lens seems to be back focusing a little so I dialled in -8 and it seemed to sort it at 600mm. At 500mm its really impressive and at 400mm even more so, but if your buying this lens 600 is probably what you bought it for and it is good but I wouldn't call it stellar very very acceptable.

Theres one thing that is a little disappointing, I'm used to the 70-300mm L with its close focus capabilities the 150-600mm you do need to be quite a distance from the subject. On the positive side, unless the wildlife is used to humans the likelihood of getting that close is quite small so it ensures you don't scare it. The backward zoom takes a bit of getting used to also.

I need to run it through Focal to make sure its ok before ensuring its the copy I want to keep. But first impressions are very good! Im very taken with it and I don't usually buy third party lenses. but at nearly 1/3rd the price of the 100-400mm its worth a punt.

I intend on going out and testing it after I have AFMA'd it tonight so I will post some few pics and a few more thoughts once I've done that.

Put a face or faces to a name.
