Bee's

With Bee populations ever declining in the UK, and being such important pollinators. I think really important to do your bit and help them on their way. We found this bee very lethargic, looking sorry for itself. So We put a little honey in a cup and added some water then used a pipette to put a drop on the floor the bee seemed to love it! Sticking its long tongue out, a few minutes later it flew off!

5D Mark III weather sealing

Hi everyone!

I'm sure that many of you are wondering just as myself how reliable Canons marketing claims about the weather sealing of pro-grade cameras are. As you know, there is no warranty on water damge which leads many photographers treating their gear with the utmost care. Making sure that no drops ever touch the camera - either by using protective covers or simply staying at home when the weather is bad.

I am not one of those photographers. On my recent trip to Scotland I learned first hand how quickly your gear can be subjected to the elements and how it responds to rough treatment.

I created an article series about my trip and just uploaded the last part. In my final words I'm summarizing my experiences on the weather sealing of my gear, so that everyone can profit from my experiences.

If you are not interested in pictures and some stories just scroll down to the weather sealing chapter fairly at the end of my article. Here's the link:

http://www.focrates.com/articles/scotland_2015/scotland_2015_part4.html

If you also made experiences with harsh weather please consider sharing them here so that we can all gain some knowledge on an important topic!

Thanks and have a great day!

Lenses, bodies, etc now delivered USPS?!?

I've noticed Amazon in the USA is using the postal service more and more. When the item is a book or bamboo cutting board, no problem...But, just saw that a next-day order for a new lens (about $1,000 in value) is coming USPS. :-*

Any concerns about this shift? About L series lenses and maybe higher-end bodies being delivered USPS?

Is anybody going out of their way to avoid certain carriers? On B&H we can choose--if willing to pay. Don't think any such option is available on Amazon...

Blended Multiple Exposure

While this is definitely a post processing technique, I think it works very well in sports photography.

The technique I use is pretty simple if somewhat labor intensive. When shooting, a tripod is ideal, but you can handhold. You want to capture the ball (or person/object that is going to move) from beginning to end. This usually means a wider shot that normal. Then, motor drive through the action, keeping the camera still. This is a great technique to try when you are at a blowout game, or just find yourself shooting the same old thing.

Back at the computer choose a first and last photo, and stack them as layers. Blend these being careful to choose beginning and ending players as well as ball positions, with soft transitions in places where the photos are identical. Now add each frame between these two one at a time, selecting the ball with some room around it, soften edges, invert delete. (removing everything but the ball and a little of the environment around it.) If the position is a little off and the background does not match, use the arrow keys to place it in the right position.

Does this kind of AF patent already exist to improve DSLR phase detect?

Hi,

The A7RII is getting a lot of attention, especially as regards its AF ability. A lot has been said about DSLR phase detect's "moderate" ability to AF on a wide-aperture primes and AF micro-adjustments.

So, I was wondering if a patent such as the following was already reported here or elsewhere: the idea is to primary use the usual dedicated phase detect of the DSLR. Then, when mirror raises a second unit, on-sensor phase detect (Dual Pixel AF for Canon), corrects the slight inaccuracy by asserting good AF rather than predicting it just before taking the shot.

Given the fact that even if the external AF module is not accurate, it is not completely off even at f/1.4. That means the correction to be done by the on-sensor phase AF would rather be minimal, hence meaning NOT THAT MUCH time consuming.

The external AF and on-sensor AF would share the same AF points. So when the mirror raises, the on-sensor AF knows which was the selected AF point and therefore knows where the "correction" has to apply.

BTW, some DSLR already proposes a delay when the mirror raises to wait for mirror vibrations to dampen. So let's use this "idle" time to do what's described above.

The only "risk" would be that the viewfinder remains dark a bit longer. But aren't we already used to it when exposure is slower than say 1/60?

It will also correct from brand to brand variations (like Sigma not focusing as good as Canon lenses on an EOS body)

This would make wonders within the Canon AF dedicated menu where you could set a priority with a slider to the importance you allow to the "correction": from quickest (on-sensor AF deactivated) to not fire the shot until the on-sensor has 100% asserted the accuracy.

What do you think? Any reports of this?

If it doesn't exist yet, my idea first :D

CLI-42GY_SETUP Pixma Pro 100 starter inks?

The low ink warning came on my for my new Pixma Pro 100. I noticed the low cartridge is named CLI-42GY_SETUP. Does the Pixma Pro 100 ship with "starter" ink and, if so, is the ink:

A-Overfilled, to account for the initial printhead fill up?

B-Underfilled, to hasten new ink purchases (and possibly making my conceived strategy of picking up additional $50 after mail-in rebate Pixma Pro 100 printers simply for the ink not the cost-effective cleverness that I envisioned)?

C-The same amount as a standard CLI-42GY, the _SETUP being used by Canon to simply track starter ink sets?

It certainly doesn't feel like the Gray lasted long. It has less than 10% left (based on my qualitative assessment of the ink bar levels). Light Gray and Photo Magenta have only 40% left while M, PC, Y, BK and C hover around 80% left. I surmise GY, LGY and PM are the most used colors (akin to PC and PM on my 9000 MK II)?

Thanks!

Canon Releases White Paper for Cinema EOS C300 Mark II

HTML:
The Canon EOS C300 Mark II is nearly release after being <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/04/announcement-canon-eos-c300-mark-ii/" target="_blank">announced last April</a> at NAB 2015. The biggest development in the C300 Mark II that DSLR users are hoping for, is the claimed 15 stops of dynamic range in the new camera. Currently Canon DSLRs are running at around 12 stops, which is a few stops below the competition from Sony/Nikon.</p>
<blockquote><p>The original EOS C300 digital cine camcorder employed an innovative new 4K UHD Super 35mm CMOS image sensor developed by Canon. The readout system dissected that 4K sampling into four parallel HD components. The summation of the two green components reduced aliasing that, in turn, supported a higher Luma MTF. The new C300 Mark II preserves these basic strategies but within a totally new 4K CMOS image sensor design. The new camera is intended to significantly extend the overall image performance of HD beyond that of the C300 while further supporting the alternative 2K cinema format. A 15-stop dynamic range is provided by a new photodiode design that simultaneously lowers the noise floor while elevating the saturation level – offering excellent HDR functionality.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Cinema EOS C300 Mark II white paper will give you all the technical information you could possibly want about the new camera.</p>

Anybody know how much lens fixed price servicing is running at the moment?

I just broke my 11-24 f4 in two and I wondered if anybody has recently sent a lens in to Canon USA to have a fixed price repair done to it, and if so what the cost was?

I haven't had a lens fixed for over three years and then it was running $225ish, I am not fussed, I am going to get it fixed whatever the cost but if it is more than $400 then I could get a free CPS membership out of it!

How to view ALL Unread posts rather than just the ones since last visit

I own another forum and a very useful link is to view all unread topics rather than just the new posts since the last visit. For example, there might be something interesting going on that I did not get a chance to read, but as I return to the site it is now not visible since nobody responded since I left.

this is a link that will show ALL unread topics regardless of the last login (viewing) time:

EOS M Finally Getting Attention from Canon in 2016? [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told Canon is actively developing EOS M and EF-M products and 2016 will be the year they “get serious about the platform”. Multiple zoom and prime lenses are in the late state of development and announcements should begin in the first part of 2016.</p>
<p>We’re also told that an EOS M4 will be a global product and a departure from what we’ve seen through the first 3 iterations. There was no information on sensor size, but I suspect APS-C will remain part of the system.</p>
<p>It would be a great if Canon put real resources into developing the EOS M system.</p>

What I'd give up if I switched to Nikon

To be clear - I'm only thinking about switching hypothetically as I'm only invested about ~$4k in Canon accessories so far (a lot of money to be sure, but very little considering how expensive glass is). The story right now on the front page regarding the 5Dsr vs D810 review got me thinking about this.

I am curious - if I switched from full-frame Canon to full-frame Nikon, what would I be losing?

So far, here's what comes to mind:
- The 600 series speedlight with it's current-gen radio control
- The intuitive Canon interface/menu system
- F/1.2 primes (although I've heard Nikon used to have at least one f/1.2 lens)
- Magic Lantern (I haven't used this, but have always wanted to try it)
- Not having to pay extra for tethered shooting software
- CPS
- Build quality (every Nikon I've held so far has felt flimsy)

What else would I be losing that I am not thinking of? I posted this in Canon general as I'm not focused on just body features or lenses, or any one aspect- but am focused rather on the entire system.

Thanks!

Canon 400mm or 100-400 for airshow?

Hi,

I'm going to the Shoreham Airshow on Saturday and would be grateful for advice as to whether to hire a 400mm f/5.6L or 100-400mm. I hired a 400mm for the Eastbourne Airshow which worked well but there's no runway or opportunity to photograph parked aircraft like Shoreham. However, the 100-400 (I) is more flexible but may pose a dust problem and I'd like to avoid a dusty viewfinder screen on my 6D.

Here's a photo from the Eastbourne Airshow taken with the 400mm f/5.6L

What to add to 7D and 70D

I figured this might be a good spot to get some quick feedback. DPReview would be difficult because I'd get different feedback based on which forum I posted in.

I've been shooting with 2 7D bodies and a 70D recently. I decided to sell some lenses and one of the 7D bodies to fund a new body purchase.

I originally planned to get a 7D Mark II but recently have been considering a 6D instead. My remaining 7D with grip will cover my sports shooting needs and the 6D would give me more flexibility for events.

Lenses I'll use are EF-S 10-22mm, 24-70mm L, 70-200 f/2.8L and a small mix of EF and EF-S primes.

So, do I go for the 6D or a 7DII? Almost same price, totally different cameras.

P.S. I have had 1DIII, 5D and 5DII bodies in the past but went all crop for some reason a year or two ago.

My Hong Kong story - or - Are there any FAKE Canon lenses being sold?

Hello everyone,

Tonight I walked along the busy part of Nathan Road, Hong Kong and came across a small camera shop that offered a new non-grey market Canon 100-400 L IS II for approximately 6800 HK Dollars (=877 US Dollars) with a so-called "store-only warranty" for a period of 3 months(?) - sounded kind of fishy to me.

They apparently also sell a copy of the same lens for around 9800 HK Dollars (=1,160 US Dollars).
Both of these prices were without tax, I was told, but the store does not give a tax free form and just deducted 20% off a higher price. - sounded kind of shady to me.

A working demo unit of the lens was on display, which I tested myself.

The sales staff was extremely rude and pushy to buy now but I got a really bad vibe, and the prices just seemed too good to be true.
Looking back I feel I made a good decision not to fall for this one, but wanted to ask
'ARE THERE ANY FAKE CANON (L) LENSES BEING PRODUCED AND SOLD?'

Good 5dsr Review

http://blog.mingthein.com/2015/07/02/canon-5dsr-review-part-1/

I think this guys does a pretty good review of the new Canon 5d. He is coming from using a D810 but he seems to look at a it from a pretty open perspective.
There are parts of it that i do not agree with(5d3 barely an upgrade from 5d2, Nikon is dominating the market for three years- eh dominating is a powerful word- see Ronda Rousey for definition)
I am excited and want to order this camera. Unfortunately i shoot 50/50 video and photo. I feel as though i need to wait and see what the 5d4 offering will be.
Maybe if i get this now then "if" I "need" the 5d4 i just chalk it up to jumping the gun!!
