20 stop push 5DIII vs 5DSR vs a7RII

Thought I'd add my own experience to this matter. Here's a photo I took at midnight without moon and stars. First is the original frame, then there are the 20 stop pushs from 5DIII, 5DSR and the Sony a7RII.

I'm sure that everybody can clearly see that the 5DIII shows horrible banding, horizontal as well as vertical (and also some from one corner of the frame to the opposite one, albeit weak).

The 5DSR definitely has the edge over the 5DIII, proven by the fact that one can spot the bird in the center of the frame.

However, the a7RII just blows my mind. One can not only see that it's a common heron, but one can count each individual feather in its plumage (9876, by the way), and on top of that it's a piece of cake to identify the fish in its beak as a female trout, approximately 8 months old.

So, naturally the discussion about DR is done, as is CR, because now everybody has got to switch over to Sony. Apologies to CR and Canon for blowing the whistle and forcing you to shut down your business, but I just couldn't see scores of photographers following Canon like lemmings, and had to do something.

Three More XEEN Lenses Coming

HTML:
<p>Rokinon/Samyang <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2015/08/rokinon-launches-xeen-cine-lenses/">announced a new line of cine lenses this week called XEEN</a>. Along with the announcement came a trio of lenses at various focal lengths, a 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm all T1.5. Each lens is priced at a very competitive $2495 USD.</p>
<p>It looks like 3 more lenses are in the plans for the XEEN line, an ultrawide which is either 14mm or 16mm, a 35mm as well as a telephoto that is either 100mm or 135mm.</p>

Wide-Angle Zoom MTF and Variations

HTML:
LensRentals.com has continued their series in looking at the MTF of lenses and their variation copy-to-copy. This time they look at the Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8L II, EF 16-35 f/4L IS & EF 11-24 f/4L as well as the Nikon’s 14-24 f/2.8G. They look at the variations across the entire zoom range for each lens and have found the Canon EF 11-24 f/4L to be the best, by far.</p>
<p>FROM LENSRENTALS.COM</p>
<blockquote><p>The Canon 11-24 f/4 though was just shockingly good. We did not expect anything like those numbers. It’s by far the most consistent zoom we’ve tested; far better than many prime lenses. I have no idea what Canon is doing or how they are doing it, but the copy-to-copy variation in most of their new lenses is minimal. I know people love to think that better inspection or QA procedures would accomplish this, but that’s not really the case. A lot of it has to do with designing the lens so that tolerances are not so critical. Put another way, that means that a tiny movement of an element doesn’t cause a huge change in the optics. <a href="http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/08/wide-angle-zoom-mtf-and-variations" target="_blank">Read the full article…</a></p></blockquote>
<p>It’s good to know that if you spend $3000 on the Canon 11-24 f/4L, you know you’re likely to get an excellent copy.</p>

Which Combination?

I am trying to decide if there is compelling reason to select one combination over the other.

1. Canon 1Dx w 100-400 II and Canon 7D M2 w 200-400. Total range 100-400 and 160 - 896.

2. Canon 1Dx w 100-400 II and Canon 1Dx w 600 II, 1.4 and 2.0 extenders Total range 100-400, 600, 840, 120.

The has greater range, though not continuous. Also weighs considerably more and costs a bit more. Plus the range is not continuous, discreet steps.

First Time Full Frame Buy

Hey everybody

So I've been longing to explore landscape photography with a full frame camera and EF lens. I'm pretty much sold on a 16-35 f/4.0 with a 6Dii but I'm guessing with a similar financial outlay, I could buy a 11-24 and original 6D.

If you were the guy (or gal) behind the sales counter, which combination would you advice a first time full frame buyer to go for?

As mentioned, I'm pretty much sold on the 16-35/6Dii combo but those extra millimeters from 11-15mm on the 11-24 are so damn tempting.
I do own a 24-70mkii

Any advice would be appreciated guys :)

Canon EF 800mm f/5.6 DO IS in Development? [CR2]

HTML:
When Canon updated the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS with a verison II, most felt that was a good sign they were still developing DO technology and lenses and we could see more added to the EF lineup.</p>
<p>An update to the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS has been mentioned ever since the new EF 600mm f/4L IS II was announced back in 2011, though nothing has come to market as of yet. Such a lens is a low volume proposition, and there are a lot of other areas Canon can make money on lenses.</p>
<p>I’ve seen talk on forums recently about an 800 DO and whether or not folks would buy one, and at what cost.</p>
<p>We’re told after a lengthy conversation that Canon is indeed continuing to develop DO super telephoto lenses and that 800mm is one of the optical designs. We’ve seen <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/07/patents-ef-600-f5-6-do-800-f5-6-do/" target="_blank">patents in the past showing an optical design for an 800mm f/5.6 DO IS</a>.</p>
<p>I got the feeling that any replacement of the 800mm f/5.6L IS would be DO. What would it cost? I’d say somewhere between $15,000-$20,000USD.</p>
<p>Nothing is imminent, but it was a good conversation.</p>

Sony A7r II - Like and Dislike features

Share your like and dislike features from A7r II

Dislike:
1. shutter and aperture dial feel cheap and small. Hard to turn
2. EVF not as good as A7s - especially shooting in low light. Has smearing look.
3. Don't see much benefits with back-illuminated Exmor R full-frame CMOS sensor with high ISO yet. Cut off line seems to be at 5000ISO.

These are early observations....

Like:
1. IS works good on my FE55mm. Was be able to shoot 1/5 without tripod

At this moment, I'm still favor my a7s...

Black Magic EF mount URSA 4.6K camera

Hi, I was looking at getting the 1D C as an upgrade from my 5D MK III as I heard it was better than the Black Magic Cinema Camera, but I came across their new Black Magic EF mount URSA 4.6K camera that is running for roughly the same price as the 1DC. It seems pretty awesome, but I don't know a lot about Black Magic's cameras. What are everyone's thoughts? Positives? Negatives? Off the top the ability to upgrade the sensor and mount in the future seems nice, and the C-Fast duel card set up is rather appealing. Plus lots of connection capabilities. Thoughts?

Any other cameras I should be looking at in this price range? It seems quite appealing to me. Also, to note, we would mostly be using this for independent film production / narrative dramas. The link to the camera is below.

Thank you so much.

Praying Mantis

This guy came out of the flower bed this morning as I was watering. I think he wanted to know why it was raining while the sun was shining :)

This was taken with my G1X MK II. Its really hard to get a good exposure, I only kept 3 of maybe 20 shots due to either focus or blown highlights. Both are severe crops.

I underexposed this one in post in order to see more detail

This one is does not have the exposure reduced as much.

5DX/5DIV announcement Q1 2016?

Hi,

Just a few thoughts:

According to the timeline over at NL, is there a slight chance to see an 5DIV announcement by March 2016? As this would relate to the 5DII's cycle up to the 5D3. Having my 5DIII (purchased 08/27/2012) recently been stolen (Aug 6) due to an assault from behind while walking in the streets with a group, I hope, my insurance will pretty much cover the loss. Lost a 16-35 F/2.8 USM II lens along with it as well.

So it would be great to make the purchase sometime later next year. Maybe even the Sigma 12-24 F/2.8 will be announced and shipping by then.

Wishing you a good summer (or what remains of it), and enjoy your Mark III's in case you shoot one. It was a terrific cam and would have been fine for years...sigh.

Regards, Peter

Powershot for video

I do video for a living, amongst the many cameras I have used and presently use, from 2/3 type ENG to 1/3 type camcorder to DSLR I very very VERY ocassionally grab a quick pick up or cutaway shot on my Powershot SX230, primarily because in some occassions I see something that would be useful, and it happens to be the only camera I have on me (it lives in my glovebox)

In good light, and with a frame rate flash in Cinema Tools it actually cuts in very well with DSLR footage for GV type shots. The 400mm+ equivalent zoom is useful as is IS.

Downsides are that there is no manual control.

Do any of Canons other powershots offer any form of manual control in video, main problem is auto exposure ramping, sometimes WB is off, and occasionally too high an ISO kicks in...

It's not to replace a dedicated DSLR or video camera, its really something compact, big zoom with just a little control over video. CDHK can't help... any thoughts?

Canon 24-70 f/4L to 24-70 f/2.8L II

Hi,

I wonder if anyone has replaced their 24-70 f/4L with a 24-70 f/2.8L II? If so, was it worthwhile taking into account the loss of the 0.7x macro mode and IS in exchange for a wider maximum aperture and (possibly) improved sharpness throughout the focal range?

For general use, say travelling, product photography or in the studio, does the new 24-70 f/2.8L have a major advantage over the f/4 version in respect of overall image quality?

I like my 24-70 f/4L but the background separation of the f/2.8 II looks good and the f/4's slight RSA problem at 70mm is a concern as I photograph plants.

Thanks in advance,

Martyn

Patent: Canon CN-E 18-85mm T2.8

HTML:
A patent showing two CN-E lenses has appeared. The first being a compact zoom CN-E 15.5-47 t2.8, which Canon announced in 2012. The second optical formula in the patent is a CN-E 18-85 t2.8, which would likely fall under the compact zoom category as well. The only other compact zoom in the cine lineup is the 30-105 t/2.8.</p>

Any talk or news about a 1D C MK II?

Hi,

I'm looking into getting the 1D C for 4K Shooting in the next 6 months or so. Has anyone heard anything about its replacement? The C- 300 series is double the price, so out of my budget. Just trying to gauge wether it is a good time to pick up the 1D C or not. I heard rumor that they might not update that camera at all, that or just combine the two 1D lines again.

Thanks!
