So this morning my toddler decided to climb onto the counter and toss my 5Dm3 + 24-70 f/2.8L II off and onto the tile floor. Great way to start a new year. It landed directly on the lens, shattering the protective filter and jamming its brass ring into the lens threading.

I'm not able to get the broken filter off with the threads now crossed. I was hoping the filter would do what it was on the lens for and the front element would be fine, but unfortunately there are several gouges in the anti-glare layer (and possibly the glass itself). So my questions are:

1) Any suggestions on how to get the filter off?
2) Does anyone have ideas on how much repairs would cost if the front element is damaged?
3) The lens is covered under a personal articles policy on our house, would it be worth putting in a claim if there is no deductible?

This BH photo/video is about the Sony a6000.
It is scary.
Sony is going to eat up the Canonists who have not been brainwashed as such as yet.
When I was talking about the UI (user interface) this is what I meant.
Sony is almost there but not quite yet. Close enough, though. I will shoot with the EF lenses with an adapter.
AF, AE with adapters...or...maybe I just get rid of the heavy glass.

Looking to get the 24-70 for use on FF. Anyone have experience of using a Lee filter holder with this lens bearing in mind the 82mm fliter thread?

I'm presuming a WA adaptor would be best/essential? Standard adaptor would cause vignetting?

I prefer to keep a UV filter on my lenses so would ideally fit a Hoya Pro-1D to the lens & then the adaptor ring - with a WA adaptor would I get any vignetting with a Lee 2-slot holder & 105mm ring fitted?

Or will I need to remove the UV filter before fitting the Lee Adaptor?

Grateful for any advice particulary from anyone with the 24-70 as to what will work or not?

I've been intentionally paying way too much tax withholding through the year. Come February, I should get decent amount money back. So the big question is, should I get 1DX for ~$5k, or wait for 1DX2 for (maybe) $7k around late-summer (or early winter) (just guessing, no knowledge on price or release date).

I've been trying to read the speculations on the 1DX2 features, but nothing solid there. Will it have enough improvements to make it worth the extra money and wait?

Current 5D3 does great, so no immediate need to upgrade. There's big sports tournament in May, but I've already given hope of having 1DX2 by then.

When my image stabilization failed, I scoured the Internet for hints at how much a repair might cost, but didn't find any hard numbers. For what it's worth, it is costing $359 for labor and $138.64 for parts. Total bill from Canon (including my CPS Gold discount) is $407.

It is my understanding that in general, Leica cameras and lenses are relatively expensive. I have no doubt they are well built and the lenses contain quality optics.

My question is this, is it really worth it? Is the IQ of a top quality rangefinder system with a couple lenses so much better that it justifies the hefty price tag? I know such a question is rather subjective (is it worth it), and different photographers have different needs. And what is good enough for one photographer is not good enough for another. But still, subjectively, is it really worth the added price?

I show my ignorance on the subject by merely asking the question. But I'm curious to hear from others on the topic, especially those who might own one, such as the leica M

Did not set out to select all of them with f/4 but it just sort of happened that way. No real questions or issues here, just thought it was interesting to share ...

Hi guys

I'm trying to decide on a telezoom that I will be using for landscape photography.

I shoot on a tripod whenever possible, and mostly stopped down to the lens' optimal aperture. The lens will be with me in my backpack whenever I go out to photograph, so size and weight is also of concern. It will be used in foul weather so it must have weather sealing.

The lens will for now be used on a 5D Mark III and a 6D, but when Canon release their high resolution body I will most likely jump on that wagon.

Most important factors:
- Image quality, especially stopped down
- Resolution (for when I upgrade to the high resolution body that is rumored, but not sure if this really should be a concern)
- Weight and portability
- Weather sealing

Less important:
- Fast aperture
- Super quick auto focus
- Image stabilization (will be used on tripod in most cases)

So far I'm considering the 70-300 F/4-5.6L IS USM, 70-200 F/4L USM and 70-200 F/4L IS USM.

I don't have any first hand experience with either one of these, so I really don't know how they compare in terms of image quality, which is my main concern. The extra reach of the 70-300 is very tempting and the maximum aperture does not worry me. However if the 70-200 F/4L's provide better image quality then I would rather go for one of those.

So what do you guys think, pro's, con's for either one? Any other lens I maybe should consider?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

Anyone use this combination yet? I just received the 150-600 and it works fine at lengths below 400. Above 400, I get distorted images and camera errors. The pics are off of LV, one at 400mm, and the other just slightly more.

The lens works fine on my 7D mk1, so I don't think it's a lens problem. But the 7D2 works with all my other lenses.

So was wondering if anyone has this combination working. Or if is the combination of a newly released camera and a newly released lens that are not quite compatible yet.

Hi all,

I am actually in disbelief that I have to even post this question as I have to ashamedly admit to shaking my head on more than one occasion at some of the silly questions I see online - but now I am guilty of the same thing!

Nevertheless I am having real problems with what I assume is poor focus with my 300mm 2.8 II on a 5D3. I have never AFMAd this lens and I am sure that will be the first bit of advice given but it has always been razor sharp with and without teleconvertors since the day I bought it. I am taking pics of backlit squirrels at shutter speeds between 1/250 to 1/1000. They are often pretty stationary while they eat and my lens is well supported (though not on a tripod). I usually use my 300mm with a 2x teleconverter at 1/500 and very rarely get one that isnt sharp. When i took a few shots of subjects that were front lit the lens appeared extremely sharp as usual but as soon as I took a shot of the squirrel the results were almost consistently out of focus/blurry (though not obvious motion blur). I am using a single focus point on the eye (which is dark anyway and also in shade). Has anyone else experienced focus problems with backlit subjects and have any advice?

So far I have found only one thing that makes no sense. In Cases 5 and 6 the manual states AF auto point switching is disabled in single point AF mode which makes sense. Of course this would apply to any case if you activated it. As you can see in Cases 1 to 4 it is on zero.

The manual and the AF setting guide PDF both state AF auto point switching is active in expanded and zone. Zone makes sense because you can see the AF points actually switching. In expanded mode the points surrounding the centre point are assist points. They are not switching. In fact they all illuminate together when AF lock is achieved in AI Servo.

I read a few things and did some tests. In single shot, expanded and single point you can actually see adjacent points light up sometimes. If one did, you took the shot you and view in DPP later you can see both the centre point and the adjacent AF point that assisted are red. Same thing on your LCD.

In AI "FOCUS" and expanded you can move the camera around and see the assist AF points light up now and then but the centre point always lights up as well. The adjacent point is still an assist point as far as I can tell.

In AI Servo all points are AF points are active and as I said they all light up when AF is achieved. So I don't get how the AF points are switching in expanded when in either AI Focus or Servo. I don't think too many people use AI Focus anyway so AI Servo is the one I'm actually questioning.

I know Canon generally has the edge over Nikon in terms of lenses, but I do find myself coveting the Nikon 35/50/85 f1.8Gs. They're compact, lightweight, sharp, and have great IQ.

Canon has the 35 IS, which gets great reviews, but where's the new 50mm or 85mm? I shoot with a 24-70 II and 70-200 IS a lot, and while I love the high IQ of the Sigma 35A and 50A, I prefer my primes to be lightweight alternatives to those huge zooms.

I know others feel differently, but I prefer the extra bit of speed (even though it's small) of the Nikon versions to IS, because I mostly shoot people, and they tend to move a lot—especially kids.

I haven't seen any rumors about these lenses for a while. Are they even in the pipeline? If not, I wonder why not?

I purchased this lens about a week ago, and I noticed upon attaching it to my camera, it was an extremely tight fit. I've search google to see if this is common for this type of lens (pancake lens), but I haven't been able to find any information.

Have anyone here on canonrumors noticed this "tight fit" on their camera body when using this lens?

I really like the picture quality that I get from this lens and would hate to return it. But I also don't want to strip the lens mount on my camera body.

When you copy your images from your camera card, what do you do with the CTG file iN the MISC folder, copy it, discard it, ignore it?
Does it have a use outside of the camera?

I like the Lens Rentals reviews and blogs. There are more cameras going through different phases of destruction through their hands than anybody else's. Now Roger Cicala has taken the top-of-the line Samsung mirrorless and measured some variables against the Nikon 7100 with a similar size sensor.
His conclusion: This is a serious new player in the field of professional photography.

Its magnesium alloy body is weather sealed which might mean whatever since there are no norms according to which an electronical device could be defined as 'weather sealed'.
It most certainly has the highest pixel count on an APSc sensor which is the only back-lighted unit that big on the market. Due to its immense processing power it can shoot 15 fps continuous up to 78 high quality JPGs or 21 RAWs. It does 4K video no sweat. Battery life is promised to be 500 shots.

Autofocus has more points than anyone else with 205 phase detection points and 153 cross type sensors.
That is a lot of points! They claim the AF speed to bee 0.055 seconds, not specifying with which lens.

The touch screen is a million pixel Super AMO LED and the electronic VF has 2.3 million pixels.

Whoever is making their lenses seems to be doing a good job as in Roger Cicala's test it performed as well as the best Nikon lens of similar specs.

What's the catch?
The Korean hi-tech monster seems to have taken a new approach on how the digital camera/video machine should be constructed. You do remember when they took on iPhone when nobody would think it possible? Now they are seriously threatening Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji, all facing the shrinking markets with their half arsed innovation.

Read two similar articles yesterday, one from the USA, the other from the UK, about this year setting records for customer returns online and in person. Apparently there is a cottage industry surrounding this activity, with some companies simply liquidating trucks full of returns, selling them to brokers who eventually get them online and into lower tier retail shops.

But according to the WALL STREET JOURNAL, some of the online and big-box giants resell 70% of returns after a quick going over.

Does this make seasoned gear purchasers avoid buying after Christmas--EVEN FROM BIG NAME, AUTHORIZED DEALERS? Seems much more likely to get a lens or something else that has been played with and bounced around during deliveries.

And when we see deals from lesser-known companies online, sometimes mentioned here or at CPW, are we seeing the items that are being brokered out?

I also wonder if the same applies to CPW "Street Price" items, where returns that are deemed fine except for packaging get sold at sometimes big discounts?
