A7rii vs 5DSr, look and noise level

Hi guys, I'm just dropping in to say I shot a wedding yesterday and my second had a Sony A7rii.

Firstly that silent shutter is SEXY - But, the Noise levels are roughly the same until ISO3200 and then the 5DSr takes the lead. The A7rii is about a stop worse above ISO3200 than the 5DSr.

Further, correctly exposed images appear to be more pleasing from the 5Dsr. Nothing wrong with the A7 files they just appear warmer and a little less defined. Good files though.

At some point I'll do a full vs, but we were looking at real world use more than gravel pits that were 5 stops under exposed. ;)

EOS-1D X Mark II to Shoot 14fps? [CR2]

HTML:
We’re not getting the feeling that an announcement for the EOS-1D X Mark II is imminent, details for the new DSLR are still very scarce.</p>
<p>We are told that the frame rate is going to be 14fps in full RAW mode. That frame rate with the rumored brand new 24mp sensor will be quite the accomplishment.</p>
<p>We’re also hearing that the LCD on the camera will get an “upgrade” over the current EOS-1D X, though nothing specific was shared with us.</p>

50mm f/1.8 STM photos I could not obtain with my 50mm f/1.8 II copies

Hello CR Friends

Here are some photos that I have taken in recent weeks with my 50mm STM. That is, these images were taken in challenging lighting, using quite bright apertures. Aperture between f/2.2 and f/2.8. After all – who buys a bright normal prime to exclusively take photos stopped down…….? Anyone? ???

As I have written here on CR in another post – I obtained my 50mm STM here in Adelaide, Australia - at a great price a few months ago. I was the first person to buy this lens from that bricks-and-mortar camera shop – this being the largest specialist photography store here. I have bought quite a few items from them over the years, and the salesman gave me a good deal for that reason. In my previous post about the 50mm STM, I listed the pros I really like about this lens: great image capability from f/2.5 onwards, AF being fast, silent, accurate and consistent, appreciated decent close MFD, build quality good, smoother bokeh, etc.

Over a number of years, I owned two copies of the 50mm f/1.8 II. The first copy had a front focus issue – and I found the AF be plagued with inconsistency and inaccuracy issues. I exchanged that lens for another (back when I lived in Europe). The second did not have the same front focus issue, but AF was still inconsistent and inaccurate – on both my 350D and 7D. So I sold that lens some years back.

Anyway, on to the photos. The photos I am sharing here are ones that I think turned out ‘all right’. I was asked to take photos at my sister-in-law’s 40th birthday the other weekend… it was in a very low light environment (indoors, on a cloudy winter day). I also am including a few photos of my step-children at home and outside, that I took a few weeks earlier (those photos are some of the first images I took with this lens).

So one thing I am happy about is that I believe these are decent photos that are there to relive / share happy memories. Additionally, what also makes me smile is that I would have been unable to obtain these images with the 50mm f/1.8 II lens on either of my Canon DSLRs with any great predictability. The reason is that, like many others, I found the 50mm f/1.8 II’s AF to be inaccurate and inconsistent. Ok… so I would occasionally get a stunning photo at apertures between f/1.8 and f/3.5 – but it often involved an element of ‘luck’- i.e. that the lens actually decided to ‘get it right’ – rather than I used other prime lenses in AF mode – e.g. the Canon 100mm macro f/2.8 USM and the Canon 85mm f/1.8 – and both these lenses had both more consistent and more accurate AF than the 50mm f/1.8 II.

However since my purchase of the STM version shooting with a 50mm prime has been a much more pleasant, fun and enjoyable experience. ;) I am really happy with the 50mm f/1.8 STM’s AF – it is quicker (and much quieter) – but most importantly even in low light or with low contrast situations – it does a much better job of AF. I applaud Canon for making this very affordable 50mm which can gives great images from f/2.5 onwards. I really like the 50mm FoV on my APS-C cameras, being similar to a 80mm focal length on a 35mm format camera body.

Has anyone else had the same experience with the recently released 50mm STM? That is - finding the improved usability of the 50mm STM (particularly in terms of AF ability over the 50mm f1.8 II) – to now open up new realms of fun and possibilities? Please share your thoughts, experiences, feedback – and any reflections on what I have written here.

Please feel free to post / share / upload your photos to this thread… I would also be very interested to hear other user experiences from those who have owned the 50mm f/1.4 “USM” (which is not true ring type USM… with its AF known to break!) I look forward to Canon potentially producing another 50mm prime (e.g. potentially a non-L, 50mm f/1.4 - f/2 USM lens - possibly with IS... now THAT would be great!) 8) But that's another story and shall be told another time!

Looking forward to reading the responses! Thanks in advance.

Paul

Charlize Theron in a Vogue beach shoot... nice.

I ran across this short Vogue video that captures a beach photo shoot of Charlize Theron. Very nice. And a couple shots of the photographer's camera that seems to indicate his preference for L primes. But really I just enjoyed seeing some nice footage of the lovely Charlize looking very nice indeed...

https://thescene.com/watch/vogue/on-set-with-vogue-charlize-theron-reminding-us-just-how-beautiful-charlize-theron-is?mbid=marketing_paid_tp_cne_oo_taboola_scene_vogue_usatodaydemo

I think there are more videos of other shoots as well so it's probably pretty interesting footage with some other shoots.

Enjoy! :)

Reflector on stand outdoors

Hi all,

Was wondering if its at all a good idea to use reflectors on a stand outside, specifically at a beach where there will likely be a a bit of sea breeze. In theory it doesn't make sense to me; the wind will catch it and it will fall down, but I'm not positive.

The reason I ask is because I don't own a reflector or stand at the moment, otherwise I'd just go try it out. But I have a small shoot for a local mag coming up and would like to have the option of reflecting light if need be. I plan on hopefully not needing any sort of flashes/light modifiers because I'll be shooting this solo, and I have an idea of the type of look in the image I will be going for which I do without extra lighting. But regardless, I'd like the option if I need it, and maybe want it for future shoots anyways.

Any input is appreciated,
Thanks

HELP! 7D MkII exposure issues

Hi all,

I've been using my 7DMkII with a Sigma 300-800 lens, sometimes with a matching Sigma 1.4x converter. Regardless of whether the converter is in use, when shooting bursts, I'm encountering frustrating levels of exposure inconsistency. The following images are untouched and unmanipulated, straight out of the camera, opened in Lightroom, and exported as jpegs. They were all part of a series or burst of images and feature the exact same exif data. The camera says the exposure is the same, Lightroom says the exposure is the same, yet it is obviously NOT. This is happening to about every 3rd image in a burst. Any thoughts? Is there a setting I'm missing that needs to be tweaked?

Some of these images are poor quality, but they represent the exposure issue quite well.

A few other details: Shot in AV mode, servo autofocus

I'm all ears for any thoughts on what might be done to remedy this issue.

New ef 50mm 1.2 annoucement coming?

Ok, definitely a micro-shred of evidence, if it can be called that, for some tenuous conjecture:

I've been watching the refurb in-stock numbers of the ef 50mm 1.2 L on Canon Price Watch. They pop up to roughly 60 left, drop down to about 50, then back up to 60. And CPW is showing a 10% discount code.

The ef 85mm 1.2 L II, on the other hand, came and went, as expected: A few dozen sold out quickly.

Is this some evidence of a pending announcement for the new 50mm 1.2? Is Canon trying to clear out their refurb stock? Do they have a higher than usual refurb stock for the lens?

Any potential buyers holding back to see what's coming?

I thought hard about getting a refurb myself, but then kept thinking I'd kick myself if the refresh comes soon.

100-400MkII Tripod Collar Plug?

One thing that has bothered me ever since I've seen the 100-400MkII, is that if you do choose to remove the tripod foot you leave the mounting threads open to be filled with dirt.
A person could just find something that threads in there to fill the hole, but even then you're going to have to brush out the other spaces, and (most importantly, of course) it's aesthetically horrible.

You would think this should be a prime target for accessory manufacturers, but thus far I haven't seen anything that fits the description.
Does anyone make a cap for the tripod collar on the 100-400MkII when you want to use it without the foot?

And more importantly, are there any that add WWII crosshairs?

4/3 + speedboster = astro hack?

So I was watching Matt Granger's review of the metabones speedbooster adapter and during the technical part of the video (the first 9 minutes or so), I hit upon an idea that MAY be a boon for wide angle astro work.

This may be crazy, which is why I included the question mark in the title. I'm posting it here to see if it has merit, not to boast about its virtues. Ok? Ok.

The basic idea is thus:

1) Take a 4/3 camera, preferably one with the best high ISO performance available.

2) Take a wide angle lens, preferably the fastest you can get. (thinking a Nikon or Samyang 14mm 2.8 or the Tamron 15mm 2.8). Alternatively, you could go for a 24mm or 35mm 1.4 and sacrifice exposure length for extra light via wider aperture.

3) Slap a metabones speedboster on the combo. If you're using a 2.8, then now you have a 2. If you have a 1.4, you now have a 1. (you'll still have to reduce your exposure time as even with the metabones you're still going to have a bit of a crop factor)

This would double the amount of light hitting the sensor than had you used that same lens on a full-frame or APS-C body, allowing a brighter exposure at high ISO or allowing you to lower your ISO and rely more on the raw light of the scene.

I suppose the major caveat here is whether any 4/3 sensors can handle high ISO the way full frame or APS-C can.

Anyway, just a little idea I had. Maybe there's some merit to it, maybe there isn't.

Here's a link to Matt Granger's video review, if you're interested.

After the A7RII, What does the 5D4/X need to have?

So, I'm probably going to purchase a A7RII but I'm still looking forward to the 5D4. If canon still puts a decent product, I could be swayed to hold off my purchase of the A7RII for native mount lenses/flashes.

This is what I'd like to see.

1. 32mp or higher MP with improved IQ.
2. AF & Metering improvements from the 7D2
3. ALL Crosstype AF
4. Fixed Blinking AF point fix.
5. 1/250th Sync Speed bump.
6. Dual CF
7. 7 FPS
8. Dual Pixel AF
9. 4K Video with S-log of some sort.
10. Touchscreen
11. RAW 1080P if possible.
12. Built-in RT flash controller.
13. Peaking and Zebra
14. USB Type-C/3.0
15. 3499$ or Less at launch.

Own 35 50 85 135, thinking about selling my 50

Prime guys/gals:
Own 35 50 85 135, thinking about selling my 50
has anyone gone down this road and regretted it?

When I'm packing for a gig, I usually bring 35 85 135. or 35 85. or just 50L.
I love the 35A. it is great for environmental portraits of people. the 50L may be redundant for me now.

I shoot people, with a mark III.

The problem is that I've sold a 50L and came back after a year.

> 50L
lighter than 85L
faster AF than 85L
more versatile FL than 85L, if you could only pick one prime for an event, this is a good spot to be.

but the 35A can do the versatile thing too.

I just don't like to have all these tools laying around, seems like a waste.
I am considering selling my 16-35 2.8ii, 50L, and 24-70 2.8ii to help fund a 11-24 for my real estate work.

the 24-70 2.8ii
great zoom, I rarely use it, b/c I'm addicted to my primes.
it's laying around too much. 1.2 and 1.4 are just too much fun.

I will probably regret selling either the 24-70 or 50L, they are like family to me...
so I'm here to get help.
thanks all

New Tamron 18-200mm Zoom is The Lightest* in the World

HTML:
<em>High-performance lens features VC image stabilization, improved AF and weighs just 400g (14.1 oz.)</em></p>
<p><strong>August 6th, 2015, Saitama City, Japan</strong> – Tamron Co., Ltd. (President & CEO: Morio Ono), a leading manufacturer of precision optics, today announces the introduction of a new high-performance lens that zooms from 18 to 200mm for APS-C DSLR cameras.</p>
<p>The new 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC (Model B018) is the successor to AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO (Model A14), which has been one of Tamron’s best-selling lenses since its introduction 10 years ago. The new 18-200mm VC uses the most modern optical and mechanical design to achieve compactness and high performance.</p>
<p>Incorporating image stabilization, the 18-200mm VC delivers superior image quality and is the lightest zoom in its class. Tamron made full use of its long experience and expertise as a pioneering force in high-power zoom lenses to create an optimal all-in-one™ lens that opens up new photographic possibilities to all DSLR camera users.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>

<p>Product name: 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC (Model B018) For Canon/ Nikon/ Sony*1</p>
<p>Date of Launch: August 24, 2015</p>
<p>The Canon and Nikon mount models will be first simultaneously launched. The launch date of the Sony mount model will be announced at a later date.</p>
<ol>
<li>No need to change lenses—shoot in a wide variety of settings, from true wideangle to telephoto, with a single lens

A zoom range of 18 to 200mm (35mm equivalent: 28-310mm) means there is no need to change lenses even when switching from wideangle shots in tight places to long telephoto shots of distant objects. Ideal for everything from large groups photos, family pictures, portraits, scenery, animals and school events—even for close-up shots (less than 0,5m) of food.</li>
<li>Greater portability at a weight of just 400g—the lightest lens in its class

Covers the focal length range of 18 to 200mm and features Tamron’s VC (Vibration Compensation)*2, but weighs a mere 400g. Tamron designed the 18-200mm VC to be as user-friendly as possible by emphasizing portability and convenience. Users will appreciate the incredible balance and comfortable feel of this lens—even when used with the newest APS-C DSLR cameras.</li>
<li>Features VC and AF, providing valuable support for DSLR camera novices

Camera vibration is magnified in telephoto shots and when a slow shutter speed is used because of dim lighting. Even beginners can take great photos at long distances, at night, and indoors—and avoid camera shake—thanks to Tamron’s acclaimed VC mechanism. By incorporating a newly designed autofocus drive module with optimal DC motor-gear train integration, the 18-200mm VC also focuses much more quickly and quietly than models with conventional DC motors.</li>
<li>Delivers enhanced imaging performance in a lightweight package

Featuring 16 elements in 14 groups, the 18-200mm VC uses an LD (Low Dispersion) lens element to minimize chromatic aberrations. Although light and compact with VC, Tamron’s new offering also delivers amazing overall optical performance for an all-purpose lens. A circular, seven-blade aperture diaphragm maintains an almost perfectly round shape even at two stops down from its maximum aperture, providing desirable and beautiful bokeh with point light sources blurring into naturally rounded shapes.</li>
<li>Works great as an easy-to-use lens for day-to-day use

For added dependability and longer life, Tamron’s new lens features moisture-resistant construction that helps prevent damage caused by accidental exposure to wetness. The lens also comes with a Zoom Lock feature to prevent unwanted barrel extension when users carry their lens and camera body combinations with the lens pointed toward the ground.</li>
</ol>
<p>*1 The Sony mount version does not include VC because Sony DSLR bodies incorporate built-in image stabilization. The name of the Sony mount model is “18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II” without the VC designation.

*2 VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron’s proprietary image stabilization mechanism.</p>

Shoot 1/8000, Just do it. (occasionally)

From time to time I like to set my Camera to Tv, Set the Shutter to 1/8000, and the ISO to Automatic. Even in bright sunlight, this probably means an ISO of around 400. Who cares. Freezing the action so well is just cool.

And yes, you can mostly freeze action with 1/1000, 1/2000 etc. But 1/8000 is right there, begging to be used and it just makes for a different look.

Feel free to tell me you prefer motion blur, and even post your motion blur photos here. Here is a whole separate thread I started on motion blur in sports photography: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=24741.0

Again, not saying to do this all the time, I love good motion blur as much as the next guy, but still... Sometimes, just freeze it.

Review: Sony A7R II by LensRentals.com

HTML:
Joey Miller, a longtime employee of LensRentals.com has completed his brief review of the upcoming Sony A7R II. I have a lot of respect for Joey, he’s a great shooter and shoots a lot of different cameras and mediums. If you want the opinion of a working photographer, his is worthwhile.</p>
<p>From Joey:</p>
<blockquote><p>I really think Sony nailed it with this one. Maybe I wouldn’t shoot roller derby with it yet, but for pretty much everything else, I think this is going to be my go to camera, especially once the lens line up is filled out more. I absolutely love the Sony FE 28mm. The Sony FE 90mm macro is nice, but it’s slow. I had good luck with M mount lenses, though, with the Leica 90mm APO-Cron and Leica 21mm Lux really knocking it out of the park on this high res sensor. If you’ve been waiting for a better alternative to your big, bulky DSLR, this might finally fit the bill. I’ve been hesitant to say that for the a7S, a7R, and the a7 II, even though I love those cameras, but the a7R II, I think this is the one. Travel advice - road trip from NY to NY

Hi there!

So, here are my new vacation plans... probably on the last week of August or first of September, I will go to NY with my girlfriend, who has to be there for a business trip (Somers), but we will travel a week earlier and I am thinking about a small road trip.

We have to fly to NY and looking at the map, I´m considering Philadelphia (straight from JFK, for one day, two nights), Atlantic city (3nights during the week when everything seems cheaper there than on the weekend), Ocean city (one night), Virginia beach (through the amazing looking Chesapeake bay bridge/tunnel, one or two nights) and a longer haul back.

If I wouldn't have been there a couple times, I would go a different direction and see Cape Cod and of course do the classic attraction - Manhattan (which I´ll visit later anyway), but I want to see something new this time.

If you have any suggestion and/or advice, photography related (I´ll probably take 6D, 24-105 and nifty50 as I don't want to spend too much time with it and annoy my girlfriend and worry about the gear all the time... which I will anyway), or about something else (maybe a better, more interesting route) it would be welcome.

Until then, I´m off googling,
thank you for your inspiration,

Stig

PS: my girlfriend will probably get a job there for two years... so in case anybody has a job around Armonk, NY, I am rather interested : )
