Patent: Tamron 13-200mm f/3.5-6.3 VC, 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 VC

HTML:
It looks like Tamron continues to put resources into developing APS-C superzoom lenses, they must be a good revenue stream for the company. The latest patent shows an optical formulas for a 13-200mm f/3.5-6.3 VC and a 16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 VC, which would easily be the widest APS-C superzooms on the market. I doubt both concepts would get made, but there’s a good possibility that one will.</p>

6D in 'clearance event'

Jessops in the UK are having a clearance sale in which the 6d is included. The big question: is this just a normal sale or are they clearing out stock to make room for the successor? It states 'over 100 lines now reduced online and in store'.
Could just be making space or getting rid of surplus stock but it's the only camera on the clearance...

Prob nothing but I thought i'd share anyhoo!

Burning Man Photo/Lens Advice

Good morning all,

Next month I will be going to my first Burning Man and could really use some help from someone with experience taking pictures there.

I currently have a 60D, and my 18-135 has been through hell and has finally reached a point where...well she's tired, really tired.

I really did not want to purchase any other ef-s lenses as it will just prolong the FF purchase, but that's my dilema.

Low light and UWA and Crop is tough for me to accommodate.

I have been kicking around the idea of a 10-22 or the 10-18. Ideally if I could walk in there with a FF and a 24-70 F2.8 I wouldn't even be asking for advice.

With the crop though I don't feel any of the standard zooms will go wide enough for some desired perspective with the exception of the 15-85, but I feel that will limit me to mostly day-time shots.

18-35 will give me everything I want...if it just went a little wider

Any advice is appreciated and also, if that advice is to honestly leave the dslr and just take in the experience (I need this escape more than ever) I will respect that advice too.

I recently rented lenses for Lightning in a Bottle to include 24mm Sigma, 100L, 24-70. They stayed in the vehicle most of the time... However, with BM being longer and...ya I just want some of your input please :)

Lenses/camera for Rio de Janeiro and Salvador de Bahia

We'll be travelling to Brazil soon and while most of our time will be in the Pantanal, we'll also be spending some time in Salvador and Rio. I am a bit concerned about security, so I have done the following for sunrise/sunset photography.

- Booked rooms at hotels in both locations with a view, so I do not need to leave the hotel for sunrise shots
- Booked a sunrise tour with our hotel to Corcovado - with a tour it should be safe to bring my top equipment
- Booked a sunrise tour for Dois Irmaos - again I am assuming a tour with a guide will be safe
- Bought an Rx100 IV to take on the beach and carry around during the daytime

In Salvador we'll be staying in the old town and in Rio we'll be staying at Belmond Copacabana Palace.

My main gear consists of a 7D2, 5D3, and infrared 6D with a number of lenses - TS-E 24 II, 11-24, 100 macro, MP-E 65, 24-70/2.8 II, 70-200/2.8 II, and 200-400/1.4x. (the MP-E 65 + 200-400 mostly for use in the Pantanal)

Am I being too petrified? Is it safe to perhaps carry a 5D3 and a few lenses in a backpack during the day? Also, it sounds like I should be even more alert in Salvador than in Rio (though Rio of course has issues). Is this correct?

Review: Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L via DXOMark

HTML:
DXOMark has completed another Canon lens review, and this time it’s the EF 11-24mm f/4L.</p>
<p>From DXOMark</p>
<blockquote><p>While traditionally strong in its telephoto lineup, Canon has always been rather weak in offering a range of ultra-wide-angle lenses. When introduced a few years ago, theEF 8-15mm f4L USM Fisheye zoom helped redress the balance, but it didn’t go far enough. Now with this new lens, Canon has proved it can compete with its long-term rival Nikon as well as with new challengers, such as Sigma, who offer some very specialized models at accessible prices. Sure, the EF 11-24mm f4L USM lacks the fast f2.8 aperture of the Nikon, but Canon traded that for wider coverage and didn’t make any concessions with image quality. Even the price is relatively accessible… <a href="http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-11-24mm-F4L-USM-lens-review-Ultra-wide-champ" target="_blank">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Birding *without birding gear*?

(Wasn't sure where to put this, sorry)

I'm off to northern Wisconsin in the fall and the lake we're staying on frequently sees bald eagles. Normally, I wouldn't make a thing of it -- I'm no birder. But my future in-laws have expressed an interested in actually boating out to see one of the nests (they're locals and know all the nesting areas), and since they twisted my arm, I naturally think it should be captured for posterity's sake. ;)

However, I have avoided the birding/sports/wildlife big white lens bug and have zero intention to start that now. Further, given that it will only be a one-off boating try one day of a longer trip, I am formally ruling out the rental of longer glass.

So I want to try this with what I have. Wesley + Fezzik + Inigo style, I shall list my assets for this impossible quest:

5D3
70-200 f/2.8L IS II
24-70 f/4L IS
100 f/2.8L IS
2x T/C
Monopod / Tripod / Arca head / Body L-Plate / 70-200 collar with Arca plate

What on that list would you bring? I presume anything other than the 70-200 (for the eagle opportunity) would be nuts, right? Given how short a lens that is, is there any value in mounting/stabilizing the lens?

My gut says to bring the collared 70-200 and the monopod and simply keep the 2x T/C on-hand if needed.

But what do you think?

Stuck filter on Zeiss 15 :( - help needed

I don't want to damage my shiny Zeiss 15, but a polarizer is heavily stuck on it. I think it gently hit something with the front of the filter because it looks it's not straight on the lens. I never use force when screwing filters on a lens...

Any suggestions to fix it? It's really stuck and pliers are not an option. Also the wrench tool doesn't fit because of the fixed lens hood. I tried to remove it by using the 'outside' teeth of two wrench tools (on both sides between the parts of the hood), but there is no movement at all :(

Here's two photos:

Phoblographer takes the DXO lens testing bait

These are painful to read:
http://www.thephoblographer.com/2015/07/21/dxomark-canons-40mm-f2-8-is-sharper-than-11-24mm-f4-l/#.Va6HtrdKg40

Apparently, a cheap prime can be sharper than a pricey zoom and therefore L lenses are terrible and Canon is ripping us all off. ::)

Regarding the 11-24:

"Despite it being a completely new lens, it rates nowhere near many other new offerings. Sony, Zeiss, Sigma and Nikon seem to dominate the top 10 on the list."

How can they run a photo blog for that period of time and not connect the very basic dots? All of the top lenses in their database were mounted on 36 MP sensors at the time...

Rural Community Mini Doc - C100

Hello CR!

I've been a Canon Rumors user for a long time but never posted a topic. I just finished a piece and wanted to share my work with you.

This is a mini doc about my grandmother in my home town. I am very pleased with how it turned out and the locals are loving seeing their home on screen. I will list my equipment below but this is 90% C100 with a 24-105 f/4L. I hope you enjoy! I'd love any feedback, good or bad. Thanks for watching.

A New L Zoom is Coming [CR2]

HTML:
We were told previously that the next L lens would be a prime, and it looks like it’ll be the EF 35mm f/1.4L II. We expect it to be announced on August 14, 2015 if the announcement date rumors are true.</p>
<p>Now we’re told the next L lens will be a fast zoom (most likely f/2.8), but not until early 2016. An EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II replacement is the odds on favourite at present. Prototypes of an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS exist, but whether or not it will become a product anytime soon is anyones guess.</p>
<p>While the source was confident that’s what we’d see, they did say it was possible a development announcement for a new supertelephoto could be on the horizon. While there’s lots going on in development of a new long focal length lens, there is nothing imminent.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

DXO likes a Canon-made lens for the first time -- mass riots ensue

Saw this pic on my RSS feed (see below), but when I went to the link:
http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-11-24mm-F4L-USM-lens-review-Ultra-wide-champ#8508

I got a 404 / Page Not Found error. I also couldn't find any 11-24 f/4L testing or reviews on their site through the page for the lens. I wonder if it was taken down due to an editing error or something -- I would check that link again later today.

But it sure looks like it either fared very well in testing or it was tested on a 50 MP body.

Just kidding, the first couldn't have happened without the second -- it's DXO, after all. ::)

Made the switch to FF - new lenses required...

So, I got a 5DIII ::)
My 24-70, 70-300 and 90 will work perfectly well on this body, for the WA FL's I'm pulling the trigger on a 16-35/4L today (really good deal here in Germany, around 780€ with rebates). After getting some ND filters and maybe a new tripod head, the next big investition will be a supertele, as I love to shoot birds and other wildlife. I would indeed like to use the 5DIII for this, as a few of my recent shots with the 7D weren't really usable because of noise performance :-\
I need something in the 500-600mm range, budget up to 2k, handholding not a must, as I'd be fine using a monopod for anything but BIF.
Thanks for any recommendations. :)

Costco, Sam's Club, Others Halt Photo Sites Over Possible Breach

What lenses do you actually use most?

I ran some statistics on my photo database to see which lenses I actually use the most, and I was rather surprised at the results. I did not expect to see that I used the 135mm f/2L so much, or that I use the 24-70 zooms so little.

The data are from the most recent six-year subset of my 21-year photo database, so the total photos included in the sample is a reasonable number n = 1.6 million. I was amazed that all but 400,000 of my photos in the past six years were taken with just 11 lenses.

1. 347,017 Canon EF 135mm f/2L
2. 175,347 Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II
3. 167,511 Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM
4. 155,148 AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D IF-ED
5. 99,971 Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
6. 84,307 AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8D IF-ED II
7. 67,937 Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
8. 54,020 AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II
9. 52,225 Canon EF 24 f/1.4L II
10. 49,765 Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM
11. 44,059 Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM

I was wondering--how does this compare to others?

To obtain this data, I ran this command for each camera directory (e.g., 103EOS5D).

Code:
% exiftool -fast -T -ext jpg -aperture -cameratemperature -datetimeoriginal -daylightsavings -directory -directorynumber -filename -filenumber -focallength -fov -imagesize -iso -keywords -lensid -lightvalue -model -modifydate -orientation -rating -serialnumber -shuttercount -shutterspeed -subject -timezone -filesize\# . > exiftoolinfo

And then combined all results together:

Code:
% find . -name exiftoolinfo | xargs cat > exiftoolinfo.cat

And ran:

Code:
% cut -f 14 exiftoolinfo.cat | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr | head -11 | perl -pe 's|^|$.. |; s|(\d{3}) |,$1 |'

Based on the results, I may need to reconsider how I invest my money in lenses. For my workflow, it also demonstrates how much Canon really needs to come out with a phenomenal, lightning-quick focusing, ultra-bright f/1.8 135mm prime lens: as sharp as the Zeiss Apo Sonnar T* 2/135 ZF.2, and as fast-focusing as their best great whites. I would happily sell $20,000 in lenses that I don't use so much and reinvest in two or three of those if such a lens were to be released.
