Assumptions on the 800mm f/5.6 DO IS lens

All assumptions are based on conjecture so think of it as a CR1, at most.

- Will be released in 2020 in line with the 12 year product cycle of the past long white fast primes.
- Price will be double that of the original price of the 800mm IS $12,000 or at most above $18,500 (debut price of Nikon 800mm VR)
-- price range is based on the decline of all camera sales of the past 5 years (includes all lenses, all bodies and all point shoots), inflation and competitors pricing.
- If weight is reduced by 36%, as shown below, the theoretical 800mm DO would weigh at best 2.88kg to 3.15kg (400/4.0 DO IS II is 30% lighter at 2.1kg)
-- the weight of the older 400/4.0 DO ver1 is lighter by 160g than that of the newer ver2.
- This would put it between 300/2.8 IS ver1 (2.55kg) and 500/4.0 IS ver2 (3.19kg)
- Initial quantities of the theoretical 800mm DO will be as scarce as stocks of the 400/4.0 DO IS II today.

5DS R pushed 2+ stops

I have a 5DS R rental from lensrentals for the weekend. Yesterday I took it out to the Oneonta Gorge and for a couple of the shots I had it set to -2 2/3 exposure compensation by accident. I decided to see if those images could be saved in post. I've owned the 7D, 5D Mk II, 5D Mk III, and 6D. I can say that this new sensor from Canon is easily the best one they've ever made in terms of shadow noise. It never would have worked with one of those older bodies. The resulting image had a reasonable amount of noise and loss of fine details, but I would consider the image salvaged.

TN's Nikon Repair Surprize

I know this forum isn't a great supporter of Tony Northrup, especially once TN said he was switching from 5DMIII to Nikon D810. However, TN did stay w/Canon for the 70-200 f2.8 lens (and the 7DMII). Now, he has found another reason to stay with Canon. He had purchased a used Nikon 70-200 lens for his new D810. (He claims no sponsorship and buys everything open market.) The lens came from an unnamed, but reputable source. That lens now needs repair, but Nikon refuses to repair the lens because it was a grey market import. TN had no way to know it was grey market since it was used and there is no public source to confirm serial numbers. It is unclear if the provider knew either. And, since Nikon won't sell parts to third party repair houses in U.S. it potentially leaves the lens useless.

Since TN has a major international following he may get Nikon to cave on its position and repair the lens or at least tell him what country to send it to for repair. But, good luck to any of us in a similar situation! So, if you are buying used Nikon stuff be sure to ask its pedigree. Canon seems much more forgiving in this regard.

Important: EU law to limit freedom of photography on the way

I know that this is no Canon Rumor, but it is very important and might affect nearly all amateur and professional photographers in Europe:

Please look up the petition on Change.org here:

https://www.change.org/p/european-parliament-save-the-freedom-of-photography?recruiter=93818876&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=autopublish&utm_term=des-lg-no_src-reason_msg&fb_ref=Default

and spread the word wherever possible: Your FB, your Home Pages and all your contacts to support the petition.

On 9 July 2015, the European Parliament might destroy photography.

The Freedom of taking photos in public places is under attack. Until now, in most countries in Europe you were safe to take and publish photographs that are taken from public ground – This is called Freedom of Panorama. When you were on vacation, you could take a photo from the London Eye and share it with your friends on Facebook*. If someone wanted to pay you for using this photo, that was okay as well. Both is about to change may destroy photography as we know it.

Julia Reda, member of the European Parliament, tried to bring the Freedom of Panorama to all countries of the EU, as few countries like France and Italy don’t have such law yet. In the majority of countries such as the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Croatia, you’re safe to take, publish and sell photos of public buildings when taken from public grounds.

However, the current draft turned the proposal upside down. Instead of bringing the Freedom of Panorama to the few countries that don’t know such law yet, it would take it away from all those who do. With this, Street-, Travel- and Architecture-Photography would be dead as we know it. It is impossible to find out the architect of every public building in order to ask for permission before you can publish and possibly sell the photo.

I therefore call on the members of the European Parliament to

Not limit the Freedom of Panorama in any way
and instead to

Bring the Freedom of Panorama to all member states of the EU
so that the European Citizens can be assured to act within the law when taking and publishing photographs from public buildings anywhere in the European Union. This is necessary to embrace our European Culture and Art!

Difference of LensAlign & FocusTune? Also affecting MF lenses?

What is the difference between LensAlign and FocusTune? They seem to be exactly the same, but are offered as a bundle?!?

I only have a couple of AF lenses and have done micro adjustments just with the camera body (5d2). I also wait for the 5dsr to be delivered. Any significant improvement of manual vs computer aided adjustments? Any differences between bodies?

Are MF lenses also affected, particularly the camera-body focus-confirm indication? I did a quick and dirty check with Zeiss MP 100 ZE and micro adjustments of +/- 20, and could not see any difference. Why not? AF and focus confirm use the same procedures, aren't they?

Thanks for all enlightenment!

5D MK3 Paint touch up?

My 5DMK3 is scratched :-\ I was a bit pissed at first, sad I know but I have had lesser EOS bodies and never scratched them. For your information its scratched on the pentaprisim, I of course contacted Canon UK who said they don't like to paint bodies and would rather fit a new top case at a cost of around £120.
So the question is has anyone sucessfully painted an EOS body? if so what paint was used?

Its bothering me less now but i'm just curious.

Opinion on 70-200 Options

Hi folks,

For a few years I owned a Canon 70-200 f/4 (non IS). It was a great lens and took some of my favorite photos with it. Problem was, that is was just too long on crop and after I picked up an 85mm prime, I rarely ever used it.

However, after picking up a 6D I found the focal length so much more useful. However, I realized I wanted it to double as a portrait lens as well and decided I wanted an f/2.8 variant. So I sold it last month.

Even thought the street price is "only" $1800 on the holy grail of 70-200s, I'd feel guilty spending that kind of money on myself at the moment. So I'm trying to go a little bit more budget

Option One:
Canon 70-200 f/2.8 (non IS). I can get it locally used for $700. I'm use to not having IS so I know my limitations in that regard. I also know it's not weather sealed. I'm more curious how good is this lens optically? How close is it to the IS II? I always hear how the IS II is much better in the corners the version I, etc. but I don't have a feel for the non IS version. I know it's an older design but it seems like it is still quite good?

Option Two:
Tamron 70-200 VC. Either a used local copy or new import/grey market from ebay. Either way, we're look at $1k or less. Now this lens I'm very comfortable in it's IQ being very good. However, being 3rd party I always get a bit nervous with the focus system. It appears it locks on and focuses a static subject quick enough? But how about AI Servo, sports shooting, etc. Anyway have any experience? I get the feel/vibe this lens is 9/10 the Canon.

Thanks much in advance fellow shooters.

Hint needed: Buying an prime lens in Italy?

I need an hint from someone, who has bought his prime lens in Italy:

I want to buy an Canon 600mm II 4.0 lens in the next few weeks. So I started looking where I get it at the lowest price. I saw, that in Italy some shops do offer this lens about 1500-2000€ cheaper than here in Germany.
Payment method over paypal (as I think is more safe than just bank transfer) is accepted in most online shops.
Can someone tell me, if this would be an good decision?

Shops I found:
http://www.idealo.it/confronta-prezzi/2381428/canon-ef-600mm-f4-0-l-is-ii-usm.html

And can someone send me an reputible shopname, where you bought it? (over the Canon Rumor forum private Message box)

Thanks a lot

Ken's reviews

Ken Rockwell never pulls punches. Canonrumors will love his latest pro-Canon anti-Nikon rant http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/00-new-today.htm 25 June 2015. Everything about Canon is classy from lenses to service whereas Nikon is mediocre. His comments about FrankenKameras add spice to the latest A7R II debate. And his love for the 100-400 II knows no bounds, and his 5DS is now his go to camera.

Zeiss 21: which UV and polifilter to buy?

I just purchased a secondhand Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 Distaton T*. I want to put a UV filter to protect the lens and also have a polarizer. Maybe the B+W polarizers (about $200) here are a bit too expensive. I think Hoya offers excellent value for money and with my current filters (hoya 77 HD vs B+W C-pol 67mm) it is not easy to see the difference.

However, 21mm is wide and I don't want to buy a filter only to find out that it heavily vignettes...

http://www.amazon.de/Hoya-HD-Polarisationsfilter-Cirkular-82mm/dp/B001G7PMHC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1435297568&sr=8-2&keywords=hoya+82mm+polarisationsfilter

I think this filter has the normal thickness and will vignette? Wat would you recommend?

What about this UV filter, will it vignette?

5Diii ISO in Manual Mode

I am not sure if this has been covered but I am hoping that one of you can tell me if I am missing something in the menus or settings.

In manual mode, while adjusting the shutter or aperture, the exposure meter moves right or left in the viewfinder. If, however, one wants to change the ISO (it is an exposure triad after all), pushing the ISO button atop the camera allows me to adjust the setting but the meter does not move. Then, when the shutter is pressed halfway or the ISO button is again pressed, the meter shows it's new exposure reading.

Is there any way to have the meter move while dialing the ISO "real time?" A friend's Nikon does this and it would make changing any or all of the settings easier and faster (and no, this is NOT a Canon bash or a Nikon promotion, I am just wondering if there is a workaround).

Thanks, all.

Tough decisions......

Hi guys and girls,

Wondering if anyone could give me some thoughts on the following. I currently have a 17-40 F4; 24-70 2.8 II; and a 70-200 2.8 II.

I currently have a 600D or T3i i believe in the US (??) and will be upgrading to 5D III at some stage in the next 6 months. I have rented both the 5D III and the 7D II and just find the 5D III better to use for me.

One thing i have realised I will miss on the 5D III is the 260mm equivelant from the 70-200 2.8 II. I often found this was a little short of what i prefered when out and about on crops; and was wondering if anyone could give some advice on the new 100-400 F4.5-5.6 IS II whether if would be worth selling the 70-200 2.8 II to aqcuire the 100-400 II? Similar image quality? I am not talking about all the tests around the web but real world use.

I do not shoot one thing specifically; i tend to pick out interesting areas and shoot what i see. Weight wise i do not have an issue carrying the 70-200 around all day and using it; neither do i have a problem with the size.

Does anyone have both lenses and if so; which do you use more often and why. And if someone has the 85 1.4 as well.

I would consider selling all 3 lenses as I do not have the luxury of keeping all and acquiering more. I love the 24-70 but i use it extremely infrequent when i am looking back at pictures and was thinking about possibly picking up a prime (85 1.4?) as i do not use the 40-70mm area much at all. Tend to use around 80-90 and 135mm + I would get a Samyang 14mm 2.8 for the really wide angle stuff as its only a couple hundred dollars in Norway and I do not shoot at wide angle often.

Appreciate thoughts and comments :)

5DSR - Moire (or lack thereof) and other assorted things

Although I have not done loads of shooting yet with it, I have been deliberately trying to make the 5DSR moire, but have yet to be successful. Initially with this camera, I surmised that perhaps we have reached such a point in high resolution that moire would sooner than later become a virtual non-issue (99% of the time) as high density sensors no longer struggle to resolve fine patterns without creating the nasty artifact.

If anyone shooting with a 5DSR has encountered it, please post an image here!

Also, I have been trying to refine a method of successfully shooting such a high resolution sensor while maximizing results. Granted, this IS a studio machine that obviously (to me) prefers to be completely stabilized on a tripod and even perhaps a remote shutter release cable. But I'm finding 5x your focal length can get you really very good results.

I'd love to hear from other 5DS and 5DSR owners on their experiences with actual shooting! Please chime in!!

Is my 7D Mark II sharp?

A certain batch of 7D Mark IIs had a focusing issue and mine appears to be one of them.

So, I had it calibrated 2x first was with the 1.0.0 firmware and the 2nd time was because I applied the 1.0.4 firmware.

Kindly check my RAWs and give your verdict.

Had a chat with a Sony rep

I popped into my local camera shop and saw two of the store employees giddily fawning over something. I casually strolled by to see what they were so excited about and saw that they were, in fact, playing with a pre-production A7r II. After approaching them to ask them what all the fuss was about, despite already knowing full well, they happily showed me the camera and let me have a little play with it myself. (the autofocus was pretty snappy, btw, and the ergonomics felt good). We got to talking and I mentioned that I was interested in buying the camera once it was released (not entirely true, as I probably won't be able to afford it when it comes out, but it's certainly on my list of potential replacements for my 5DmkIII when the time comes), but I said that it came with a caveat. They asked what the caveat was and my reply was simple: compressed raw files.

This is where things got interesting. They said the Sony rep was in the store and asked if I'd like to speak to him. This struck me as odd because I am a nobody photographer that no one has ever heard off nor did these guys even recognise me as I haven't been living in this city very long (alas, my beloved The Camera Store is so far away these days!) as I don't pop into this particular store very often.

So I was introduced to the Sony rep. I expressed my hesitation to buy the camera due to the lossy raw files, but made it clear that if/when true lossless raw files are available, I'd buy the camera in a heartbeat (again, stretching the truth a little). He confirmed what has been popping up a bit lately, that Sony is investigating lossless raw files and that they might be enabled via a firmware update. I thanked him for his time and he thanked me for my feedback.

Just an interesting little story I thought I'd share.

60K actuations on my T3i: Too many?

Hi everyone, pretty new to this forum so go easy. :) I've had my T3i for about 3 years and have racked up 60K in actuations according to the app counter I have. Lately my hit rate (especially with my 50mm 1.4) has been very low and I'm wondering if this may be attributed to my camera. It's better with the 17-55 but typically when do these Rebel's "wear out"? I'm very easy on my gear and only do this for a hobby, shooting mostly my daughter, neighborhood kids, school functions and lower light venues. Am I simply justifying a new purchase of a 70D or even a 6D? ha

Thanks for your input!

Review - Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

HTML:
LensTip has completed their review of the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens. As if we needed more reasons to buy this lens!</p>
<p>From LensTip:</p>
<blockquote><p>I think those who were waiting patiently for the Canon EF 100–400 mm f/4.5–5.6L IS II USM won’t be disappointed. Its predecessor was optically very good but the new lens is better in every single category. The evenness of performance, no matter what focal length you use and what place of frame you take into account, is truly impressive. The lens remains sharp even on the edge of full frame and doesn’t have any resolution slip-ups. If you add to that the much-improved stabilization, a huge step forward when compared to the older model, you get practically a lens as close to perfection as it is only possible; its flaws, connected to vignetting and flares, aren’t anything serious.</p></blockquote>

Leica Q Hands-On Field Test by The Camera Store

HTML:
<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ye9TrMw_nHI" width="728" height="409" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p>
<p>The Camera Store has completed their hands-on field test of the brand new Leica Q. This fullframe, fixed lens, mirrorless offering from Leica appears to be the real deal. The lens is a 28mm f/1.7 Summilux and looks like it performs as one would expect it to. Is it worth its $5000+ pricetag? By the looks of this review, it seems to be.</p>

The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II "Done"

HTML:
We’re told that the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II is “done” and ready for production. An announcement date is unknown as Canon is still playing catch-up on some other in demand lenses such as the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II.</p>
<p>SPECIFICATIONS</p>
<ul>
<li>Dust & Weather Sealing</li>
<li>All the latest coatings</li>
<li>Longer than the current version</li>
<li>Smaller diameter than the current version</li>
<li>Smaller filter thread</li>
<li>New hood design</li>
<li>Unknown weight</li>
</ul>
<p>I think a fall announcement is likely, and I don’t expect such a lens to be announced alongside a camera body.</p>
<p>On a side note. I’m heading to Chicago this weekend and will be using the <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/162614-USA/Canon_2512A002_Wide_Angle_EF_35mm.html/BI/2466/KBID/3296/DFF/d10-v21-t1-x37446" target="_blank">current EF 35mm f/1.4L</a> exclusively on the EOS 5DS.</p>
