Better Beamer?

Hi there everyone. I am looking to upgrade my flash soon from the 320EX to the 600EX-RT. I mostly use my flash for concert photography, but having got the 100-400L II for myself, I've recently been doing a lot of wildlife. I am just curious as to what everyone thinks about the Better Beamer, because it seems that is almost a must have accessory for birding and wildlife. I shoot with a 5D Mark III if it makes any bit of difference. Thank you in advance.

SLR Evolution - Missing features

xD series cameras

2015 and they still don't have a ~1MP LCD display overlay in the optical viewfinder. You should be able to review the picture you just took without taking your eye out of the optical viewfinder by now as well as the option to choose between Optical and rendered (live view) through the viewfinder. (customizeable to show histogram or 100% focus check.)

Tilt - Body should be able to tilt the sensor - you shouldn't need a dedicated TS lens for tilt. Besides - having the body do it could lead to 'auto' tilt for expanded DOF when two AF points are selected.

NFC / Smartphone pairing / Image transfer. (You should be able to easily share a picture you just took simply by putting your smartphone close to the SLR body.

Also; when will my SLR be able to make phone calls and send text messages? - plenty of room for a good speakerphone. (joke.)

Canon 11-24 f4 filter solutions.

Well there have been many posts about the 11-24 and possible solutions for front mounted filters, hopefully this thread will pull the available solutions together. So far I have seen one set available, from a Vietnamese company, with massive 160mm (?) filters.

Fotodiox had said they were working on a solution and their Wonderpana system is based on a 145mm filter. I have the Wonderpana kit for the 17TS-E so did a little testing with the 11-24 to see if the 145mm filters would cover the 11mm fov, after all it does allow full shift stitching of 17TS-E images that actually give a wider horizontal fov than the 11-24 at 11mm.

Here are the results of resting the 145mm CPL on the built in hood of the 11-24 @ 11mm and 14mm. Looks like any company working with 145/150mm filters is going to have a restricted zoom range.

Which Wide Angle lense for 6D?

Hello,

I am moving from APS-C to fullframe. Therefore I need a new wide angle lense. In general I do architecture and landscape photofraphy. For this field I mostly use f/8, but in the summer I wanna try some astro shots and go again on helicopter sessions at twilight, cause it was so much fun! For this I need definitly bigger aperatures.

In my list till now are:

Tokina 16-28 f/2.8
Canon 16-35 f/4
Sigma 20 f/1.8

at F8 they are all very very sharp though. The Tokina with filter solution is around the same price as the Canon. The Sigma though used is only half price compared to the others, but I dont know if the prime focal length would limit me much :/

Which of one these do you think would satisfy my fields the most?

thank you for every help!

The Mirrorless Movement: Sony Boasts Record Growth in Expanding Mirrorless Digital Camera Market

HTML:
<strong>SAN DIEGO, Jun. 3, 2015 –</strong> Sony Electronics – an overall leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer – is experiencing record growth in sales of mirrorless cameras, a rapidly expanding segment of the interchangeable lens camera (ILC) business.</p>
<p>According to The NPD Group, overall mirrorless camera revenue has grown 16.5% over the past 12 months, with DSLR sales declining approximately 15% over the same period. During this time, Sony has experienced a robust 66% boost in their company’s mirrorless camera sales, strengthening their dominant position as the #1 overall mirrorless brand, a position they have held for 4 consecutive years.<span class="green">*1</span></p>
<p>“Growth in the mirrorless segment shows this new technology and form factor are resonating with consumers,” said Ben Arnold, executive director, The NPD group. “Going forward, mirrorless will continue to command a greater share of the interchangeable lens camera category.”</p>
<p>On top of the sales momentum, InfoTrends’ customer surveys demonstrate how strong innovation in the mirrorless space is continuing to attract a younger and more photo active ILC customer. The latest data shows that over 61% of first time ILC buyers are under the age of 35, up from 54% approximately two years ago. Key motivating factors for their photography include travel and family.</p>
<p>“First time buyers in today’s ILC market will play an integral part in future growth of the segment, especially considering the increasingly younger customers that are buying into new systems,” said Ed Lee, group director of the Consumer and Professional Imaging group at InfoTrends.</p>
<p>This news comes on the heels of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) decision to recognize “Mirrorless” as the official term for interchangeable lens cameras that do not include a mirror mechanism.</p>
<p>“This information shines a spotlight on where the mirrorless market has been, where it is today, and the bright future it presents,” said Neal Manowitz, director of the still image business at Sony Electronics. “Our business continues to thrive based on strong innovation and the unique value propositions we are delivering with products like the α7 series and the α6000. Their impressive imaging credentials allow photo enthusiasts, hobbyist and professionals to capture content in ways they never before thought possible.”</p>

5DS: Some Thoughts After Shooting w/ It Last Week

I had the chance to shoot for a half day with the 5DS, recently. Since this was a pre-production model, be careful about making any sweeping judgments. I'm guessing that things might change in the final model that we all get.

The form factor feels like a 7DMII to me, which makes sense giving that they use the same BG-E11 battery grip. All the controls feel usable—nothing struck me as in a strange place or non-intuitive. Good solid stuff, and once you're used to the Canon way you'll adapt to this in just a few minutes.

As Canon creates so many branches in the product tree, it reminds me of what GM did with the Pontiac, Olds, Buick, Chevy, Saturn, etc. It's a little hard to find what separates them since they share so many characteristics. Some models share the same great focus. Others have integrated GPS and some don't. If you want comments on all of the finer points, it'll be best to build a spreadsheet with all of the specs. So all I'm going to do here is tell you, in big strokes, how I think about this new model.

First, the extreme resolution will be nice, at times, but I haven't been yearning for a 50 MP camera. It will only be useful to me in landscape and macro work. There are no other amazing leaps to me other than the sensor density.

Second, the trade off is in the max frame rate of 5 fps. I just finished two days of shooting wildlife at 14 fps (RAW) with the 1DX, and 5 fps would not have cut it. (Don't worry about the slower transfer speeds when downloading from the card. It's not material in the scheme of things, though you'll definitely want to use at least USB 3.0. for your card reader.)

That resolution (the big pro) and that frame rate (the big con) are how I think you should frame your decision (sorry about that pun).

Now to some other points.

I like:

Processor speed.

Focus matrix. Still amassing stuff.

CF + SD. SD is so much more ubiquitous. E.g., built into Apple's MBPro line.

How I can use so many other pieces of my EOS setup. I shudder (shutter?) to think of how much I've spent on accessories, and I like how Canon salvages our investments.
I don't mind:

 • That it's not a ground-breaking video platform. I'm beginning to care less about having amassing still camera with amazing video camera. When you think about the capabilities and price of other SLRs in the Canon line, it takes the pressure off that.
 • That there's no built-in flash. I can't remember using a built-in flash on my other Canon SLRs.

Here's what would make this their new flagship, which it is not, and feel like a steal at $5,500 (vs. the current $3,900):

 • 12+ fps RAW.
 • Better light sensitivity at the high end. I'm almost embarrassed that we're topping out at 6,400 (12,800, expanded).
 • Wifi.
 • GPS.
 • 4K video (mixed emotions on this one).
 • ISO to 51,200.

Yes, I did order one months ago and I'll keep it when it comes, but I am not as unabashedly excited about this model like I was the 1DsMkII or the 1DX or the 7DMkII. Each of those was revolutionary to me. This feels evolutionary. Its gaps also mean that I'll not be selling my 1D-X like I originally thought.

I've attached two pictures, here, to illustrate the camera's capabilities. The second is merely a crop of the first. Other than that crop, there was no editing done. This was shot at -1/3 EV, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM at 200mm at f/2.8 and 1/160 sec at ISO 800. I was sitting in a car, and this was handheld (not even resting on the windowsill). IS was set on Mode 1. Natural light. Circular polarizer affixed to lens. The original file size was 8,688 x 5,792 pixels (50.3 MP).

I'll like the camera and I'll be glad I bought it, but it's not the flagship replacement I have been waiting for.

Teardown: Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD

HTML:
<p>Roger at LensRentals.com had a couple of Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD lenses show up in their repair department after the Memorial Day weekend with jammed zoom rings, and decided to show the world what’s inside the very good Tamron ultrawide.</p>
<blockquote><p>…we found that the Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 is a well built lens, but certainly not very modular in construction. Where a modular lens, such as the newer Canon lenses, separates easily into three sub-assemblies, the Tamron came apart in lots of separate pieces</p></blockquote>

Advice for shooting Olympic Nat. Park and Oregon Coast

Looking for any recommendations on places not to miss in the Olympic National Park and the Oregon Coast. Will have one or two day trips from Tacoma WA to Olympic and then one day/night in Gearhart OR and one day/night at the Heceta lighthouse in OR. Looking to plan a couple other days on the southern OR coast. I like to do a lot of long exposed water so any waterfall and beach recommendations would be great. Also any lodging suggestions on the southern OR coast would help.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Kirk

<p><strong>Phase One Medium Format Advantages</strong>

Medium format sensors are 2.5 times larger than those found in high-end 35mm DSLRs. They produce unmatched resolution combined with large, high dynamic range pixels with exceptional wide angular response. Phase One always aims to customize its sensors, and has developed a world leading expertise in sensor design and optimization. And, while other cameras simply offer interchangeable lenses, Phase One’s commitment to an open platform philosophy extends beyond its choice of lenses to its camera body, viewfinders and digital backs, all of which are interchangeable for maximum creative options – (including the option to interface with other manufacturers, such as mounting a back on a technical camera) — as well as long-term upgrade possibilities and investment value.</p>
<p><strong>Phase One XF Medium Format Camera Delivers Fastest Response time</strong>

The Phase One XF camera is built on an all-new electronics architecture using faster processors, with new sensor advancements (including gyroscopic sensors and accelerometers) and an integrated wireless Profoto flash trigger.</p>
<p><strong>The “Honeybee Autofocus Platform” (HAP-1)</strong> is designed with a new custom processor and high-resolution CMOS AF sensor that combines a unique floating-point architecture and fully programmable interface. It is built for precision in typical professional environments using a new white spectrum focus assist light and Phase One developed patterns. With the new Hyperfocal Point Focusing feature, it is possible to set a Hyperfocal point for each lens and have HAP-1 automatically return to that specific point when needed.</p>
<p><strong>The New XF OneTouch User Interface</strong> is designed for power and simplicity.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Intuitive Touch</strong> – There are two touch screens: A 1.6” grip screen is designed for clear visibility under any lighting condition using a transflective capacitive touch display. On the back is a 3.2” retina touch screen designed to show high-quality image previews, with the ability to zoom to 100 percent with a single tap.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Soft-configured controls</strong> – The XF Camera controls can be controlled from the camera or via tethered computer/mobile device. Three customizable dial and six customizable controls let photographers personalize the operation of each control to support their needs at any given time.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Upgradeable Camera OS</strong> – The new XF Camera OS powering its OneTouch UI allows for easy and fast upgrades that will provide both new features and unique customization in accordance with the feedback of our customers. XF Camera Systems users are encouraged to submit ideas and feature requests and will be able to easily upgrade their system at regular intervals to benefit from new features.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>The New IQ3 Digital Backs –</strong> These include the first Phase One exclusive 80-megapixel sensor capable of 60 minutes exposure. IQ3 Digital Backs use a new high-capacity interface capable of delivering faster data transmission and power sharing between the system’s two batteries. The IQ3 high-capacity interface is the enabler of many advanced integration features and will be the foundation for OneTouch UI updates for years to come.</p>
<p><strong>Capture One 8.3</strong> <strong>– </strong>Capture One distinguishes Phase One systems from the rest, to offer photographers the most consistent image quality, by industry leading RAW conversion and image processing tools. Review: Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS Sport

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS Sport lens.</p>
<p>From The-Digital-Picture:</p>
<blockquote><p>Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Lens sets the bar high for build quality, performance and for range of features among the 150-600mm lenses available at review time. With optical performance just a bit shy of the most elite zoom lenses, and with an incredible range of very long focal lengths available, sports and especially wildlife photographers along with many others will find this lens to be a very useful tool in their kits. This lens can bring home imagery that many others cannot.</p></blockquote>

35 f2 IS USM opinions

Since this lens is now rather affordable plus I had a 10% discount code to use here in the UK I decided on impulse really to grab one. Got it for £359 brand new.

Think it'll be handy to add to my selection of lenses (see signature).

While I wait for it to be delivered, thought I'd ask you lot if you think I made a good quick decision?
Seems some love it and others not so much.

Any opinions?

My 20D

When I was cleaning up my garage yesterday morning, I found my old 20D. So I brought it up and fully charge the battery. Test couple shots to see if the camera still functioning. I am still very pleased with the quality back in the days.

OVF and OVF for both eyes

After 3hrs shooting through EVF & OVF, my left eye vision went little crazy. My eyes are fine with long hours shooting in LiveView or back LCD.

I wonder why current DSLR/Mirrorless systems don’t have any OVF or EVF designed for both eyes at same time? Increase in carmera size? Left/right eye vision different? Any thoughts?

Or am I getting old here ;)

Thanks,
Dylan
