Patent: Tamron 85mm f/1.8 VC

HTML:
A patent for a Tamron 85mm f/1.8 VC has appeared. Is Tamron following Sigma and getting into the quality prime market, but with Vibration Correction (Image Stabilization)?</p>
<p>Canon’s 85mm offerings, the EF 85mm f/1.2L II and EF 85mm f/1.8 could probably both use a refresh, though we haven’t heard anything about either in a very long time. I can’t see Canon ever adding IS to a fast (f/1.2) 85mm lens, but we might see something like an 85mm f/2 IS STM one day.</p>

DPReview: Canon Rebel T6s/T6i Lab Report added to First Impressions

HTML:
DPReview has added lab reports to their first impressions for the brand new EOS Rebel T6s & EOS Rebel T6i.</p>
<p>Summary</p>
<blockquote><p>The new Rebels bring solid image quality improvements to the popular line. Increased resolution (24MP, up from 18MP) makes the T6s and T6i competitive against most APS-C offerings from competitors, and a weak anti-aliasing filter in both models offers the potential for sharp images. Low-light noise performance is also now competitive against peers: better than some offerings while only slightly behind class-leaders. Tie in these considerations with a well-performing JPEG engine that yields pleasing results, and you’ve got solid performers on the image quality front.</p></blockquote>

Summer Vacation - Tour of the West - Seeking advice

Hello,

I have planned a 10 day excursion through the western states of NM, AZ, and UT, with my origin being Fort Worth, TX. Main spots of interest on the tour where we will land for 2-3 days are Grand Canyon (staying very near the south rim), Park City, UT, and Moab, UT. Along the way we are driving in shorter durations with more stops to take in some of the towns and cities. The itinerary as it stands now is:

FtW -> Amarillo
Amarillo -> Santa Fe
Santa Fe -> Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon -> Park City
Park City -> Moab
Moab -> Albuquerque
Albequerque -> FtW

Along the way, I've planned a few excursions - mostly for photographic diversion/opportunities - Cadillac Ranch, Petrified Desert, Winslow, AZ (I know, I know...), Horseshoe Bend, and Zion NP. While in Moab, we will see Arches and Canyonlands Parks.

I'm looking for any other suggestions of notable places along that path that I would not want to miss. I've not been through this part of the country before other than a week in Moab some 15 years ago as a purely mountain biking vacation that was pre-photography-years for me.

I've not done any high-contrast desert landscape photography before, either. The only specific gear I have that lends itself to that cause are some UWA and WA lenses and a high-quality polarizer filter. Any advice here would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance!
Greg

My Ideal DSLR Design

This is my Ideal Digital Camera.... If Canikon developed such a camera, it can very well save itself from extinction in the near future as Mirrorless cameras are catching up in almost every category except battery life and autofocus but it's just a matter of time... So the two main things I'm proposing leverages a DSLR's attributes or even flaws into wonderful features Mirrorless cameras can't match.

1.) Lengthen the Pentaprism Hump either to the right, left, or BOTH sides so that it includes a Built in EVF alongside the Optical Viewfinder. This gives DSLR's the BEST of Both worlds. It can even be below the Optical viewfinder and keep the Hump the same...
2.) Use the large size of a DSLR by including a LARGE 4"+ Display. Make the corner more square if they need to to maximize the size of the display. This makes a Huge difference for aging eyes and is possible only on a large DSLR.

PS: Sorry for the Crappy MS Paint job I did at work. No Photoshop at work :(

Thoughts?

DR - how measured and what is it on 1Dx, 5DM3, ...

How is dynamic range measured. I keep hear that such a camera has 12/15 stops of DR.

How exactly is DR measured. From my limited understanding of electronics, if you have A/D converter that is 12 steps the output will be between 0 and 2^12-1 (4095). If you allow the darkest step to have values from 0 - 15 (4 bits of data) then you are left with 8 stops of DR.

Does this make sense? If not, what is the correct way to think about DR.

Thanks

Review: Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS Sport

HTML:
<p>Friend of the site Dustin Abbott has completed his review of the brand new Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS Sport lens.</p>
<p>Dustin initially wrote this lens off saying:</p>
<blockquote><p>I had pretty much written off the new Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM SPORT lens before I reviewed it. I saw the specs (including the heavy weight and increased size over the Tamron 150-600 VC), and the MTF charts and early shots didn’t seem to be a lot better than the Tamron.</p></blockquote>
<p>However, after using the Sigma, Dustin came away quite impressed by the mix of build quality, performance and value.</p>
<blockquote><p>All in all I consider this lens to be a smashing success for Sigma. It has some shortcomings (its vignetting, particularly slow aperture, and heavy weight), but the tradeoff for that weight is a beautifully constructed lens that really feels like a match for some of Canon and Nikon’s best made lenses. It has great optical performance that is going to make a lot of photographers very happy with the images they bring home (this would be an amazing safari lens!) That focal length is really quite incredible, and the fact that you can use the lens wide open at all focal lengths without hesitation is very empowering. The price may seem high in comparison to the Tamron, but after using this lens I feel that the price is actually extremely reasonable for what you are getting, and would probably still be a decent value if it were $1000 more.</p></blockquote>

Canon competition to D610+14-24 f/2.8

Not clickbait... hear me out...

I have been a decades long user of Canon. Currently 7D/10-22mm, 24-105 f/4, 70-200mm f/2.8II
7D is wearing out and I am getting to its limits (IMHO). So... what to replace it with.
Night/astro/landscape is where I mostly use my 10-22mm lens and publish. Looking for high ISO/low noise... full frame and wider aperture would be ideal. Something to last for a long time would be ideal ie not getting previous generation equipment.

I have finally considered all options now I think:
7DmkII has great AF/video but not as good noise as 6D and is $100 more
6D has the best noise for Canon but poor AF. At least another year before replacement
5DmkIII is a great all rounder but is much more expensive and noise is on par with 7DmkII as far as I know
A7x has better noise but poor AF and mostly need 3rd party lens
Nikon 610 has better noise, good AF, high frame rate, dual slots, etc

Canon 16-35mm f/4 is a great lens but f/2.8 would be better. Wider would be a bonus
Canon 16-35 f/2.8 II doesn't have the sharpness/coma/ etc as the f/4 version. Replacement end-2016?
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 is well known as a great lens. Used on A7xx/Canon users using adaptors (without AF)
Canon 11-24mm is awesome but still f/4 and crazy price

In Australia, I can get
6D+16-35mm f/4 is ~USD2560 (USD2270 grey market) old body, new lens
6D+16-35mm f/2.8II is ~USD3030 (USD2730 grey market) old body, old lens
D610+14-24mm f/2.8 is ~USD3200 (USD2880 grey market). Body/lens stable in market (price, quality etc)

I'm open to suggestions.... I am being too fussy but it is a big step for me either way.

Zeiss Batis FE lenses tests by Diggloyd

http://diglloyd.com/blog/2015/20150524_2246-ZeissBatis85f1_8-what-a-lens.html

"The Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 Sonnar rocks. What a gorgeous lens (the Zeiss Batis 25/2 also). MUST HAVES for Sony shooters.

Short of Zeiss Otus, you’re not going to do any better at 25mm and 85mm on Canon and/or Nikon. And the Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2 surely looks to be a better lens than the Zeiss ZF.2 25mm f/2 Distagon. Which raises a nagging question I’ve been wondering about for 2-3 years: when is Zeiss going to raise its wide-angle game in the DSLR arena?

A camera system depends on its lenses, and the Zeiss Batis line now solidly anchors the Sony mirrorless platform. Along with the Sony 28mm f/2 (more review coverage coming) and the Sony/Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 and the prospect of a 50+ megapixel Sony A9, one wonders about Nikon and Canon and Fujifilm as distant runner ups in key markets like travel, landscape, wedding photography, etc. If only Sony would fix is dog excrement service and support."

Canon Developing a New Slower Supertelephoto Lens [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that Canon is developing a new supertelephoto lens that is slower than f/4. One immediately thinks about an update to the EF 400mm f/5.6L, but we’re told that is not the case and it’ll be a new lens altogether.</p>
<p>While the source couldn’t nail down the exact focal length, speed or even if it was going to be a L lens, they did say the hope was to have such a lens to be announced some time in 2016 and that it would be “affordable”.</p>
<p>This sort of lens is definitely missing from the Canon lineup, both Tamron and Sigma have had a lot of success with 500mm and 600mm zoom lenses.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

24-70 f/2.8 DG OS Art Next from Sigma [CR1]

HTML:
<p>We’ve been told Sigma’s next Art series lens will be a zoom and most likely a 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS Art.</p>
<p>The last Art series zoom from Sigma was the 24-105mm f/4 OS DG Art, which has been out of production for some time while Sigma put their manufacturing capacity into the new art series primes as well as the 150-600mm Sport and Contemporary lenses, we’re told production of the 24-105 f/4 DG OS Art will start again soon if it hasn’t already.</p>
<p>There was a rumor a while ago about Sigma attempting a 24-70 f/2 lens for full frame, but we haven’t heard anything about such a lens in quite some time.</p>

Help me decide... New camera for Iceland in Sept

Hi all,

I have a 2 week trip to Iceland and the Faroe Islands coming up in September. I am looking for a recommendation for a full-frame body. The total size and weight of my photo kit is a concern for me as I travel. For half of my trip I will be driving around Iceland with a rental car and lots of time. For the other half, I will be doing the organized excursion things based out of Reykjavic. I'm also flying to the Faroe Islands for 3 days. All of my photography trips have been via car to National Parks where I can leave stuff in the car until I need it. For this trip, I'll be carrying just about everything. I can leave a suitcase at the airport to hold excess gear/clothes that aren't immediately needed.

I am mostly interested in landscape photography, and I feel ready to get a full-frame camera. My current kit is a 70D, 70-300L, 16-35 F4L IS, and the 18-135 STM kit zoom. I've got an aluminum Manfrotto tripod and a CF Manfrotto Befree. I have been preparing to go full frame for the last year (hence my two L lenses).

I am interested in a full-frame camera for wider angle landscape shots, reduced noise, and (less so) increased DOF.

I am considering a few options:

1) Buy a 6D and keep the 70D. The 6D would have the 16-35 for landscape, and the 70D would have the 70-300 for wildlife, etc. I am concerned that having two cameras will be too bulky and heavy for the amount of travel I'll be doing. I also not too keen on buying a 6D when a mk2 version is likely to come out in a year or so.

2) Travel light and get a EOS M3 with the wide-angle zoom (quite good apparently). I like the M3, but realize it won't have the ultimate IQ of a full-frame. I could still bring the 70D with the 70-300 for birds/etc.

3) Sell my 70D and kit lens (worth about $600 on B&H) and get a 5DS. I can afford this, but I'll have to cut into my racecar budget :) My worry here is that the 6D2 or 5D4 would suit my needs better in the future.

4) Rent a 6D/5D3/5DS for the trip. A 6D would be about $200 and a 5DS would be about $500.

Anyone have wisdom to share?

Lens design questions

I have noticed that Canon has started to design L lenses with the focus ring closer to the body and the zoom ring closer to the front of the lens. Lenses like this include (not an exhaustive list): 70-300L, 100-400 II. Wide angle lenses tend to the have zoom ring closer to the body.

Is this new to Canon or have been been older L / pro lens with the zoom ring closer to the front of the lens? I am not familiar with this design?

Does Nikon user this design?

Other manufacturers?

If there are any lens designers in the audience, what is the advance of each design.

Thanks

A stupid question on DSLR viewfinder

The theme for my morning walk was DOF and bokeh. I was armed with my dear 5D III and my favorite lense the 35mm f/1.4 L.

To my surprise, the pictures that I took with the lense full open, seemed to show much less DOF than the image I saw in the viewfinder. I repeated the test a couple of times and really, the image through the viewfinder does not really give a realistic picture of what you get at f/1.4.

Is this because of the focusing screen that is in use or does the lense stop down to 2.8 or something before the shot is taken? This is just a question that came to my mind and I will not take any answers personally.
Does somebody know?

Aldi cleaning wipes inadvisable

Hello everybody!

I have just made the unpleasant experience that some Aldi humid cleaning wipes are absolutely unusable.
And I wanted to let you know so you don't make the the same unpleasant experiences as I did.

I bought some "optiWisch Bildschirmreinigungstücher" from Ald Süd distributed by the Hyga GmbH & Co KG, Mülheim a.d. Ruhr.
The packaging instruction said the cleaning wipes are ideally suitable for cleaning displays as well as lenses, etc.

I wanted to use them for my computer and camera displays and occasionally for dirty filters in field.

The problem is that the cleaning wipes produce streaks all over the place and make the situation worse than before.
Even worse: if you don't want to clean glass or really plain surfaces, e.g. camera housings after beeing at the sea shore and getting some sea spray, the cleaning wipes generate pieces of fluff (German: Fusseln).

So stay away from these and try something else.

Note: I reported that issue to the distributer. If I'll get any answer I'll let you know.

Canon 7d mkii Viewfinder Inverted

Well, I haven't even used this new camera on a shoot yet. Only random junk setting it up in the backyard. It wasn't always like this and it's a little hard to describe the problem. The first two days I had the camera there were no problems at all, takes excellent photos. It's updated to 1.04, but the problem didn't start directly after the update.
Yesterday I turned the camera on and the viewfinder was turned negative. So badly you can't even see what you're shooting. All the space in the viewfinder is gray, with all the logos and info written in empty space. I always see every single option that the viewfinder is able to display.
I reset the camera, turned it off and took battery out for 20 minutes. Tried to reapply the 1.04 update...
I have no idea what else to try. It wasn't an option I turned on and boom inverted I would have noticed right away because you're unable to see anything.
Any help would be extremely appreciated. I couldn't find a single other person having this problem.
Thanks guys

Green cast on 6D screen

So I had a post the other day about a weird green tint in the image of my 6D, as well as having what looked like a green cast over the screen when compared to my 5Dmkiii. Turns out it was a defective camera and I had it replaced. Well, the replacement 6D had the same issue. All the images were skewed way on the green side. So once again, it was swapped out for a third 6D. This one has been better, much better. However, when comparing the screen on the back to my 5Dmkiii, the everything has a green cast over it. For example, the lettering in the menu is not white, it is off green. This is the third 6D I have received and all have the same issue. Am I just unlucky, or is the screen on the 6D just more green than compared to the 5Dmk3, or am I doing something wrong? Thank you all for your time.
