D810 vs 5DSr

I am not sure if I am seeing all of this right, but new full resolution test shots (jpegs) of the 5DSr are up on imaging resources and from what I see, the 5DRs blows the doors off of the D810 at ISO 6400. Again I might not be comparing the right images, but I think I am smart enough to figure it out and it ain't pretty for the D810.

Here is the link:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-5ds-r/canon-5ds-rA7.HTM

I also made comparable screen grabs of the two.

Where is Canon headed?

Given the latest 1DX, 5D4 and 6D2 rumors ....

There are supposedly 4 new camera bodies we will see no later than Spring/Summer of 2016.

1DX2 at 25MP
5D4 at 28MP
5D4C at 18MP
6D2 at 28MP

The Complete Pro / Semi-Pro Canon Lineup could look like (existing and rumored cameras combined):

1DX2 at 25MP
5D4 at 28MP
5D4C at 18MP
5DS at 50MP
5DSR at 50MP
6D2 at 28MP
7D2 at 20MP

First, it seems like just too many cameras. Now, this might not be an issue for Canon since they would be using the same body and all else except for sensor and AF on the 5D line. But either way, the lineup is vastly expanded. Canon has gone from 4 cameras spanning from the 7D to the 1DX, to potentially 7 cameras.

Secondly, it is top heavy. What is at the low end? Just the 6D2 which will likely be too crippled for even an entry level FF camera. (the 7D2 is added due to build quality, and the way in which Canon markets this as useful for Pro use). It will stand alone in the $2K area where all the 5D series are $3.5K -

If the rumors hold up - this means Canon's strategy is to very much increase choices and expand in the high end arena. Does this mean they will continue keeping up with medium range cameras (70D)? Doesn't seem to make much sense to me. But I'm not a product and marketing specialist. Maybe Canon figures that with their professional lenses, which they have been aggressively updating and innovating in - is the future market place and they are making a move to be a more high end DSLR company. In other words, people buy Canon for their L lenses. People who can afford L lenses are going to buy high end bodies also.

Some say the expansion and updating of pro lenses is for the higher resolution cameras. I'm not so sure they would update that many lenses and that much glass in recent years just for the 5DS. Granted, updates are always needed. However, Canon updated lenses that weren't really out of date or lacking. They made several already great lenses even better. Quite a push from Canon for updates in lenses when they have zero pressure from Nikon in that regard.

I guess I'm just wondering what from Canon, in FF, will compete feature-wise with Nikon in the $1,300 - $2,000 price bracket? So far, nothing.

And given what features are starting to be offered in the Rebel T6, one has to wonder if the 70D line has run its course. Is there a market for $1,200+ APS-C anymore? I really believe and feel that most people want FF for over $1,300 - given the prices of the 6D and D610. While high FPS, and AF and other specialty things are great (7D2), the all mighty FF sensor is by far the biggest feature of interest. It impacts people's photography the most.

Does 3 lines of APS-C survive in the future market? Rebel -> 70D -> 7D2

I think with the 7D2 falling to the prices it has, and with the features that it offers which is far and above the 70D line, there isn't likely going to be an 80D. Something has to give. Price and feature wise, things are getting squished in the crop world. Where does Canon price an 80D? Where do they put it feature wise? Can they seriously release an 80D at the usual price bracket when the 7D2 sells for what it does? Who would buy it?

The main attraction of the 7D2 is the FPS, AF and build quality. It certainly isn't the sensor or IQ. IQ that can be had in cameras less than 1/2 the price. The opposite could happen - the 7D2 is the last 7D we'll ever see, and the 80D will remain as the last king of high end APS-C maxing out in the $1,200-1,300 range with more MP. If they increase the features of the 80D to cover a little of what the 7D2 did, that's all they need. To get the rest of the 7D2's features, one would need to go to the 5D line.

And remember, this is all in the context of a shrinking DSLR market and sales. Perhaps Canon thinks that the last bastion for DSLR profit is among the high end where all out quality and features is demanded and where it is paid for?

Canon seems to be avoiding the low-to-midrange FF market by only offering the 6D, while Nikon embraces it. Should be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Canon EOS Rebel SL2 This Fall? [CR1]

HTML:
The Canon EOS Rebel SL1 may be the forgotten Rebel, except for those people that own one. It’s small size and good feature set has made it a sales success for Canon. When it was launched, it was the smallest DSLR on the market.</p>
<p>We’re told that an SL2 is definitely on the way and may be shrunk even further. While the thickness of the camera can’t change all that much because of the EF mount, the length, height and weight could be further reduced. One of the ways to reduce the size is implementing an EVF instead of an optical viewfinder. Sony has done this with the A77 DSLR, and Canon has said when the technology is good enough, they may also introduce it into the EOS lineup.</p>
<p>We’d expect an SL2 to share the same 24mp sensor as the recently released EOS Rebel T6i and EOS Rebel T6s.</p>

EOS-1D X Mark II Sensor Talk [CR2]

HTML:
We’re told that the sensor currently being tested in the EOS-1D X Mark II is 25mp. The sensor will be manufactured by Canon, so any third party manufacturing rumors can be quashed before they start.</p>
<p>This source is also confirming the likelihood of a new pair of DIGIC processors to handle the added resolution and maintain the frame rate of the current EOS-1D X.</p>
<p>Do not expect any heavy handed ergonomic changes, the camera will likely look and operate very much like the current model.</p>
<p>More to come…</p>

Sony Holds 40% Sensor Marketshare

HTML:
Sony Corp now holds 40% of the global marketshare for image sensors according to the <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/how-sony-makes-money-off-apples-iphone-1430274602?mod=LS1" target="_blank">Wall Street Journal</a>.</p>
<p>Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai says:</p>
<blockquote><p>I think one of the things we certainly pride ourselves on with our image sensors is our commitment to stay at least several years ahead of the competition and to make sure that we make the heavy R&D investments to make sure that we are there, ahead of the competition. Whether it’s a device that goes into other manufacturers’ products, or sometimes our own, if there’s innovation there, and innovation therefore means a business opportunity, that’s something I get excited about, and so do the people who run our device business.</p></blockquote>

The most color neutral ND filter?

Bryan Carnathan over at the-digital-picture.com just wrote a pretty decent 10-stop ND technical shootout-style review with the B+W ND vs. Heliopan ND vs. Hoya ProND vs. Tiffen ND vs. Singh-Ray Mor-Slo vs. Breakthrough Photography X3 ND.

Lensrental: Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 G OSS Resolution vs Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS L

http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/05/sony-fe-90mm-f2-8-g-oss-resolution-test

"At both focusing distances the Sony system is clearly out resolving the Canon system. We would expect that, to some degree, given the higher resolution Sony sensor. But the difference was, quite frankly, surprising to me. It would seem to indicate the new Sony 90mm Macro lens performs at least as well as the Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS L, from a resolution standpoint, anyway"

New Flash System in the Works [CR1]

HTML:
We’re told that Canon is working on a new flash system based around a new metering technology, which could possibly be E-TTL III.</p>
<p>The source said Canon is well aware they lag behind Nikon in flash metering technology and are “actively working on improving their own system, rather than making new E-TTL II flashes”.</p>
<p>This new technology could appear in 2016 in a new flagship Speedlite.</p>

56mp Sony Sensor on the Way?

HTML:
<p>When Zeiss announced the new Batis lenses recently, they posted an image on their flickr page that had an original resolution of 8910*6300. The speculation began almost immediately that the image was taken with the upcoming Sony A7R II.</p>
<p>From SLR Lounge</p>
<blockquote><p>The A7R II is expected to be announced within the next 2-3 weeks, so we should know soon enough if this is correct. The interesting scenario here, in my opinion, is if the picture WAS NOT shot with the A7R II. Because if the new Sony A7R II wasn’t used, then what was? The long rumored A9?</p></blockquote>

The First Rule of Photography is....

Have a camera!

I regularly ride my bicycle in an area between the Columbia River and Vancouver Lake. (Near Portland Oregon USA) It is a great area for bird watching. Today a Bald Eagle carrying a fish flew right over me.

It would be great to carry my 5D3 with me, but it's a lot more practical to have my S100 along. I rarely get any good pix, but I carry it on general principle.

Today there just happened to be a search and rescue helicopter from the local Air Force Reserve unit doing training in one of the fields next to the road where I ride my bike. I know the area well and figured that I could get to a spot where the helicopter would be right in front of Mt. St. Helens.

The Air Force guys were very cooperative subjects. :)

It was great fun for me and reinforced my belief that I should always have a camera.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II vs f/4 IS

Hey guys,

which lense should I prefer?
I'm from austria and need a perfect every-day lense. I have a 24-70 2.8 I, but I want to 'upgrade' to one of these two. Which one is better for me? Is the 2.8 worth the extra money?

I would get a NEW 24-70 f/4 at 569 €, while the 2.8 would cost 1000 € more.

I will use it also for video and so IS would be better for me, but I love Bokeh and on the 2.8 it is a little bit more...

What do you think? What would you choose? 569 € for this lense is really cheap for an L lense...

Dynamic Range Canon 100D / SL1

Hey guys,

long time lurker, first time poster here.
I have a specific question that I am sure you guys can help me with:
I am thinking about switching from a 70D(loser AF that Canon is unable to repair) to a 100D (Love the 9 Point AF, super reliable). My photography is very DR dependent (plz dont start the hate on that topic) and before buying I'd like to see whats what with the 100D in the workflow I am using. I have had the possibility to test a 600D which doesn't respond well to pushing the shadows (banding). The 70D is quite good in this regard (love that sensor!) and I think the 100D might be similar (judging by the high iso noise samples from online reviews). However I was not able to find any raw samples online that had deep shadows, what little i found did look promising though.

TL,DR:
I need a Raw sample from a EOS 100D/SL1 of a high contrast, preferably backlit (black shadows) scene shot at ISO 100 to see how the 100D handles noise after pushing shadows. Subject doesn't matter, can be anything.

Thank you very much!
(EOS 700D/T5i would also be interesting to see)

A few examples of what my work looks like:
600D struggling with banding (tree on the right), strong NR applied:

SO WHERE's CANON 7D Mark 2 Firmware Update Mentioned for this Week

so other users or people who have/had problems with there 7D Mark 2 where told canon was releasing or updating the firmware this week
so was it a lie or etc created by canon too calm people down
or too ease the concerns of the AF problems some people are having
a sorta placebo effect too put out on the NET too put people at ease?

Color balance 6D vs. 60D

An experiment to compare a 400mm f/5.6 on a 60D vs. the same lens on a 6D with the 1.4X TC III (manual focus) ended up displaying a vastly different color balance. The 60D has much cooler (more blue) tones than the 6D with the TC and the same lens. I checked the Picture Style on both bodies. The 60D is on Standard (3,0,0,0) and the 6D is on Auto (3,0,0,0) which has the same values as Standard (3,0,0,0) I don't know what "auto" does vs. "standard" since the numbers are identical. I had to reduce the 6D files size in Photoshop to 60% so both files were 2.7 MB. I cannot imagine the 1.4X TC III is the cause of the tonal differences. I have never adjusted Picture Style settings on either body. Any suggestions as to what's going on here would be appreciated.
