HTML:
Candler to Write and Direct Hutcherson’s Next Hollywood Short Film Inspired by a Consumer Story

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 22, 2015 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging, announced today that Kat Candler, a decorated filmmaker best known for “Hellion” and “Black Metal”, has signed on to Canon’s Project Imagination: The Trailer, a consumer contest helmed by Ron Howard. Howard and actor Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”) will choose one winning trailer to inspire a Hollywood short film starring Hutcherson and written and directed by Candler. Ron Howard and Josh Hutcherson hand selected Candler for the project who’s film “Hellion” was in the 2014 U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to receive Honorable Mention for the Gamechanger Award at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival.

“I’m so excited to work with Kat Candler and after watching ‘Hellion’, it was clear that she is extremely intuitive and can bring thought-provoking work to the screen,” said Josh Hutcherson. “The best part about the project is that I have no idea how the script will unfold with Kat or what type of part I’ll play — it’s totally up for interpretation!”

“Kat’s films are cinematic and she has a very real approach to capturing life experiences in a way that viewers can relate to,” said Ron Howard. “With everyday moments at the crux of this creative experiment, Kat’s technique and skill will lend themselves in the most authentic ways possible.”

“It is an honor to work with Canon, Ron Howard and Josh Hutcherson on this project,” said Kat Candler. “I’m a firm believer that there are many great stories living within each of us and the Project Imagination platform is the perfect opportunity to share and inspire others.”

Project Imagination: The Trailer contest launched in February 2015 and is open for submissions through April 29th. Based on the concept that anything in life can be a movie, and every movie starts with a trailer, even those who have never picked up a camera before can easily turn everyday photo and video footage into a creative movie trailer, with titles, Hollywood style voice-overs and epic soundtracks. Consumers of all skill levels can create and submit trailers of their everyday moments using Canon’s Trailer Editor tool at imagination.usa.canon.com.

For the third iteration of Project Imagination, Francesca Silvestri and Kevin Chinoy of Freestyle Picture Company are once again producing the film, this time with Josh Hutcherson.

Zeiss Announces Autofocus Batis 25mm f/2 & Batis 85mm f/1.8 for Sony E Mount

HTML:
ZEISS Batis 2/25:

The ZEISS Batis 2/25 wide-angle lens has ten lens elements in eight groups and draws on the ZEISS Distagon optical design. Four of the lens elements are aspheric on both sides and five are made from special types of glass. The aspheric lens design ensures consistently high image quality over the whole image field and a sharpness that extends right to the edges of the frame. The moderate 82 degree image angle combined with a minimum focusing distance of 0.2 meters makes this wide-angle lens the perfect choice for architecture and landscape photography and many other applications besides. It encourages the user to make creative use of depth of field which can often yield surprising results, particularly in close-up photography.

ZEISS Batis 1.8/85:

The ZEISS Batis 1.8/85 is a moderate tele lens which offers 11 lens elements in eight groups and features the ZEISS Sonnar optical design. The lens elements are made from special types of glass and designed to ensure superior image quality. The ZEISS Batis 1.8/85 is a particularly good choice for wedding photography and portrait shots, offering the high speed which provides plenty of creative scope to bring out the main subject. Thanks to its optical image stabilization, the ZEISS Batis 1.8/85 can capture outstanding images even under difficult, shifting light conditions.

“The Batis family of lenses is the first time we have launched autofocus lenses for Sony’s full- frame E-mount cameras which are ZEISS through and through – in other words exclusively developed and distributed by us,” says Dr. Michael Pollmann, Product Manager at ZEISS Camera Lenses. The Sony alpha full-frame E-mount system, which currently consists of the α7 family of cameras, is one of the most innovative camera systems on the market and is becoming an increasingly popular choice for professionals and people considering switching from DSLRs. “The ZEISS Batis lenses are our way of acknowledging this trend and providing creative and ambitious photographers with the expert tools they need,” says Pollmann. The lenses are easy to use yet offer professional performance, so they are a sound investment for amateur photographers, too: “Camera sensors are constantly evolving, and so are photographers. Our Batis lenses are the perfect answer to these changing trends and herald a new era of professional photographers using mirrorless full-frame cameras,” says Pollmann.

The ZEISS Batis 2/25 and ZEISS Batis 1.8/85 lenses offer an initial choice of two focal lengths which have proved to be the most popular among users of the system: a moderate wide-angle focal length and a tele portrait focal length. The lenses make optimal use of the camera sensors, capturing every last detail with impressive contrast and high resolution. As well as offering fast and reliable autofocus, the lenses also support manual focusing, allowing users to choose the best option for each individual situation. The sleek, modern design – with smooth surfaces reminiscent of the high-end ZEISS Otus lenses – emphasizes the superior quality of this new lens family and gives the Batis lenses an unmistakable look and feel.

New Lightroom HDR

Not a big time HDR guy, but the new HDR merge in Lightroom CC is really nice and works exactly better than anything I have used in the past. It basically takes a bunch of RAW files and makes a new raw file with all the tonal range you would ever need. No photoshop needed. I did this quick test this morning and liked the results. Because I was in a hurry I had to do it hand held and used a high shutter speed 1/250 at f/5. I just went through ISO 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, and 6400 so the IQ is not as good as it could have been, but it still turned out great. Can't wait until I can used it with the 5DSr and a tripod. For some reason it looks terrible until you click on the image.

Thoughts on the Nikon D400

HTML:
Canon was very slow to market with a replacement for the EOS 7D, but ended up making a very good camera in the end with the EOS 7D Mark II.

Nikon on the other hand is still without a modern, flagship, APS-C camera. The D300 was announced in 2007, and the D300s refresh was in 2009. So will we ever see a Nikon D400? Or will Nikon continue to focus on full frame cameras and the entry level APS-C market?

Thom Hogan seems to think so:

I’m hearing the D400 prototype rumors again with the goal of a fall launch, yet the list of features hasn’t seemed to change a lot. Sure, 24mp, 8-10 fps, and higher video specifications. But despite another whole generation of cameras passing by between the prototypes, the end point didn’t seem to change much, as many of the same features are being mentioned again.

Thom has done a nice article about what to expect in the D400, whenever it does make it to market. A lot of what has been written in the past has appeared in other Nikon DSLR bodies, full frame and APS-C alike.

EOS C500 Mark II Going Higher Than 4K? [CR1]

HTML:
We’re told that the Cinema EOS C500 Mark II is going to be announced some time in mid 2016 and that the camera will likely shoot at a resolution “well above 4K”. Canon “knows it was very late to the 4K market” and does not want to be considered late to the 6K+ world.

The form factor of the camera may change as well, as we’ve heard constant rumors of Canon doing a shoulder style camera in the Cinema EOS line.

The C500 was announced in August of 2012, which was nearly 8 months after the C300. By most accounts the C500 didn’t sell all that well, unlike the C300 which exceeded expectations. It stands to reason that it’ll have to be a more advanced product to justify the price and to have any hope of competing with ARRI.

16-35 f4 IS overall quality

Recently i got 16-35 IS and cannot be happier with it. Compared to 24-70 II it is lighter, easier to use and the build quality appeals to me. Having mostly plastic body reduced the weight, but the nicest touch is the internal focusing and zooming. The image quality is simply outstanding. i do not mind f4 since i use it mostly outside, and for the inside i use it with the flash. Almost every shot is a "keeper". When images are transferred to the computer, i do need to correct exposure more so than with any other lens.

What is your take on this lens? How would you compare it to any other WA lens zoom or prime?

Nikon Settles Lawsuit Against Sigma

HTML:
Nikon Corporation (Kazuo Ushida, President, Tokyo, hereafter referred to as “Nikon”) announces that it reached a judicial settlement as of April 21, 2015 with regard to the patent infringement lawsuit (hereafter referred to as “Lawsuit”) filed by Nikon against Sigma Corporation (hereafter referred to as “Sigma”) in the Tokyo District Court on May 25, 2011.

After receiving the Intellectual Property High Court’s recommendation for settlement, Nikon has decided to make a judicial settlement, since it saw that swiftly resolving this matter through settlement would be the best way after its comprehensive examination of the progress of the Lawsuit including the Tokyo District Court’s decision.

Nikon will receive settlement money from Sigma. Additional terms and conditions of the settlement, including the amount of settlement money, are subject to confidentiality obligation between Nikon and Sigma.

Video Devices 4K External Recorder

HTML:

Video Source: [B&H Photo Video]

Sound Devices are makers of great equipment. The have won a number of awards for their innovative products, particularly their audio recorders. However, their external recording monitors were successful enough for Sound Devices to dub the video-oriented division of the company Video Devices. Earlier this month at NAB—where they won more awards—they showed-off a new series of external recording monitors, the PIX-E series.

The PIX-E series is the company’s 4K effort. The series includes three monitors/records: PIX-E5H, PIX-E5, and the PIX-E7. The E5 and E5H both feature a 5″ 1080p screen whereas the E7 has a 7″ 1920 x 1200 screen. The Pix-E5H is HDMI-only. All 3 monitors can record 4K in a variety of Apple ProRes codecs. The E5 and E7 are capable of recording all the way up to ProRes 4444 XQ.

Some features of the monitors:

Waveform Monitor

Vectorscope

Histogram

TapZoom™

Peaking

Zebras

False Color

Frame Markers

Four Way View

LUTs

These monitors record to an mSATA-based SpeedDrive that plugs directly into the monitor using a USB 3.0 connection. This makes it very easy for dumping footage–no more looking for cables or a docking station. They have two versions of the SpeedDrive: a 240 GB version and an enclosure only version which allows you to choose your own mSATA drive.

The PIX-E monitors have a die-cast metal housing and feature a Gorilla Glass 2 screen. They will certainly be as rugged as the Pix-240i, if not more so. The screens on the monitors are in-plane switching (IPS) touchscreens. The touchscreen enables the great feature TapZoom™ to help get critical focus. The IPS panel provides a bright, colour-accurate, and wide viewing angle for your camera team. The monitors are powered by the very common Sony L-series batteries.

Optional accessories that are available include an XLR audio interface and a kit (hard case, articulating arm, batteries, 2 SpeedDrives, sun hood, and cables).

The series is available on B&H Photo Video for pre-order. The 7″ version comes in at $1595, making these the most affordable 4k external recorders. They are expected to be released this summer.

Canon Improves XF205 Functionality With Free Firmware Update

HTML:

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 21 April 2015 – Canon today announces new firmware for its popular XF205 Full HD camcorder, which improves the camera’s noise ratio in low light conditions¹ and enables live streaming of content over IP networks. Developed following feedback from a variety of XF205 users – from broadcasters to wedding videographers – the new firmware also enhances the XF205’s standard of performance and recording modes.

Improved low light performance, reduced noise – a new image quality setting

The first firmware update, available now, will enable a new image-quality setting, allowing users to record footage with reduced noise, even in low-light conditions. The new update gives operators the freedom to choose their preferred image quality based on their shooting requirements. Users can select from the current default setting, which prioritises the camera’s high-resolution shooting, or the new setting, which gives priority to capturing video footage with reduced noise.

Support for live IP streaming

An additional firmware update, available from late June 2015, will enable the XF205 to steam video footage over IP networks, a practice widely used by the broadcasting industry. By enabling this feature, users will be able to transfer live footage to news programmes and video-sharing websites. Additionally, the new firmware will allow the XF205 to work with Fujitsu’s video transmission equipment – the Fujitsu Network IP-900IID and IP-920D HD/SD Compact Video Decoders² – as well as software³ supporting IP streaming. With this new feature, users will be able to stream video over an IP network without having to alter existing video-capture and editing workflows, such as those employed at broadcasting stations.

Enhancing XF205 functionality

In addition to the IP video streaming functionality, the new firmware will also enable XF205 users to take advantage of two new recording features. Firstly, when recording in MP4 format, videographers will be able to use slow and fast motion recording – slowing down action up to 40 percent, or speed up video by up to 250 percent. Additionally, when choosing Wi-Fi settings on the XF205, the selection menu will feature an improved user interface, delivering intuitive and easy to understand operability.

The new image quality setting results in a slight decrease in resolution compared to the image quality setting originally employed in the XF205

The Fujitsu Network IP-900IID and IP-920D are trademarks of Fujitsu Limited, registered in Japan and other countries. The Fujitsu Network IP-900IID and IP-920D are scheduled to support the XF205 from April 2015. The Fujitsu Network IP-900IID and IP-920D HD/SD Compact Video Decoders may not be available/sold in all regions

Details regarding tested software are scheduled to be made available in late June 2015 on Canon’s Japanese-language professional digital video camcorder homepage: canon.jp/prodv

Nikon Fullframe mirrorless coming?

http://nikonrumors.com/2015/04/20/new-nikon-full-frame-mirrorless-camera-on-the-horizon.aspx/#comments

Of course, "regular F-mount" and "small size (similar to Oly EM1 / Sony A7)" does not go together at all ;)

But still ... I really hope Nikon comes out with a top-notch mirrorless FF system and catches Canons' asleep at the wheel geriatric ward management team with their pants down. :)

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Price - Performance?

Anyone care to guess at what it will cost at release?

If it is anything like the 5DS - $3,700 -- ouch! More? Insane.

Consider this - right now, from authorized USA retailers,

A 6D and 7D2 can be bought together for $3,100.

That combo has a tremendous amount of versatility. 6D with great image quality, FF sensor, low light performance. 7D with the strong AF system, blazing FPS, video features, and crop factor for sports/wildlife. Between the two, there's very little that can't be done. And you get two bodies too.

Given this - does it stand to reason that Canon would have to put out a 5D4 that is better in specs than these cameras combined? I would hope so. Otherwise, why bother? Better to have two bodies than one in my opinion. Only thing you lose is having all the features in one body for convenience.

That said, initial rumors did not really indicate an emphasis on increased ISO. They indicate a higher expanded ISO, but that isn't an indicator of native ISO performance. Given the less than stellar ISO specs of recent cameras - who knows what Canon might release. It isn't out of the realm that the 5D4 will be less than a stop better. That would be a disappointment.

The original 7D had more FPS than the 5D2 or 5D3. So there is no reason to assume that Canon is going to give the 5D4 more FPS than the 7D2. I don't buy into the 12fps rumor. 12 is a LOT. 12 ain't happening.

Even if released at $3,100 - the 5D4 would still be the equal of 2 separate lower line, but excellent bodies combined price wise. This makes me wonder what will be the enticing aspect of the 5D4? What will make people want to drop what they own and buy this thing? Or make people not want to buy two bodies to get the job done, and instead opt for a single 5D4?

The only thing I can think of is a real boost in ISO performance, in keeping with the 5D's reputation as low light king. But I'm not so confident anymore. 4K is up in the air. Better AF is a sure thing, but that isn't the big of an appeal since we already have great AF in the 5D3. Dual pixel, now that is going to be big. But worth spending that much? For the video guys it will be. They are salivating for a FF with dual pixel that doesn't cost as much as a car.

Or, will it be the sum of many minor to medium evolutionary improvements that all add up to an overall better camera?

Hard to place value on it.

I keep imagining Canon would need to really put out something potent. But will they? There's no way guys like KR are correct in saying there won't be a 5D4. For that to happen, would mean that Canon is going to keep the 5DS lineup in that range, and the 5D3 will live on in the low $2,000 range to compete with Nikon and others. That sounds like a disaster.

So either they make this camera (based on speculation) on the higher end of performance to justify the price, OR it will end up on the conservative side of the rumors and speculations (as has been the real trend) and Canon prices it a bit lower, in the low $3,000 range initially.

Worst of both worlds would be disappointing specs and high price. I wouldn't put that past Canon, they've done it before. If that happens, anyone who sold their 5D3 anticipating it will kick themselves.

The trend seems incremental and conservative improvements. These wild numbers in rumors almost always flop. The exception being the megapixels of the 5DS, but that was the whole point of that camera...

Best Video Gear of NAB 2015

HTML:

Last week was NAB 2015 and there was all kinds of new and exciting gear for the industry. This video from TheCameraStoreTV gives a quick rundown of what they liked at NAB 2015. This year’s hot topics included new Adobe Creative Cloud updates, the mirrorless camera revolution, and drones.

Adobe CC Updates

Adobe has a bunch of updates to increase your productivity and creativity. The new mobile application that is in development, “Project Candy,” will be a useful tool to help match the colour of your shots or create looks based on whatever inspires you.

There is also a new Lumetri Color Panel which includes a lot of presets and better functionality.

One update for Premiere Pro that got many people excited was the new Morph Cut. This is a fantastic effect that will save many headaches for those that shoot a lot talking heads. It is a transition type effect that smoothes out any jump cuts so that they’re unnoticeable.

Another interesting announcement from Adobe is the Character Animator app. Use artwork created in Photoshop or Illustrator to create 2D animations. The program tracks your facial movements via webcam and records your voice to apply to the character you’ve created. The software is in its early stages but looks fun and easy.

Mirrorless Cameras

As stated in the video, mirrorless cameras were everywhere at NAB. These fantastic little cameras are finally starting to get the attention they deserve. They’re smaller, lighter, more adaptable, and have great video features. The Panasonic GH4 and Sony A7S were two of the most talked about cameras in the past year.

The Panasonic GH4 will be getting a firmware update focused on native anamorphic support. This update should pair nicely with the recently announced Veydra M43 anamorphic lenses. The GH4 is also expected to get V-log gamma which is apparently based off the VariCam. This should make the GH4 an even more powerful camera for the indy filmmaker or a great B-cam for the Varicam. However, there has been nothing confirmed regarding the release of V-log.

Drones

Drones have been blowing up in the past year and this year is certainly going to be no different. It gives the low budget filmmaker an opportunity to have the vast sweeping aerial shots in their films that the big Hollywood productions have.

DJI will release two versions of the Phantom 3. The Professional model will feature a 4K camera where as the Advanced model will be an updated version of their HD camera. Will you wait for Canon 6D MKII and 5D MK IV (2016 releases) ....?

Say that I have a bunch of Canon expensive lenses, and between now and then 2016, what if Sony develops a newer FF camera like the rumor A7r II ( higher ISO, quieter, speedier autofocus plus 5-axis stabilization) and MetabXXX comes up with improved faster focusing electronic adapter for Canon lenses, would you consider these options (hypothetically)? Bear in mind anything could happen between now and then .... in specifications etc ....coz' it is only a rumor.
